Growing up in the 80's, those cards will always have a special place in my heart as those were the ones my dad brought me and taught me how to collect. He passed away late last year so collecting the "junk wax" is even more meaningful for me and something I will be able to pass down. IMHO cards today are just too damn much for what you get and dont have the level or excitement or joy when opening them up vs the older ones. That and they dont come with gum either LOL! Love your channel and keep up the great work!
my favorite cards are my 90s that give me feels from ripping when I was a kid. I used to get excited looking through the boxes of old cards (still do) then sad after googling a pretty card. regarding selling, I keep guys from my teams and have some auto-sells (wemby, stroud etc) cus they pay for all my others.
60 yrs old, kids in my neighborhood let me see some cards, and that's ALL IT TOOK, I just love the appearance of a card(s), I was about 13 and those kids were 8-9 yrs old, can't even remember thier names, but it's the CARDS, THE CARDS, that have my attention, it very interesting that they have a monetary value, brings a little something to it, but if my cards NEVER had a $ attached, I still want my cards.. Great Post!!
In a hobby full of investors now days. I try to find the dealers at shows that have vintage and junkwax. Those tend to be the collectors or people i have more in common with. At least in the shows around me anyway. Thanks for sharing
My first time listening to your podcast! I enjoyed your opinion! I am a vintage guy as well. My very first baseball card I purchased was when I was 10 years old…and it was a 1966 Willie Mays ..#1! I was only 10 years old at the time! I still have that card! I played center field, and actually played with THAT card in the back pocket of my uniform. What memories which created my love for the game!
Nice video! Just found your channel and subscribed. Agree with you about vintage and I’m a collector, however, I often sell things to fund the areas I’m collecting. Maybe that’s kinda like the trading we used to do? Trade card for money - use money to get the card you like? Happy collecting!
Nice vid. Liked your comment about trading card for card. A team you like or player and vice versa. Nowadays that just dont happen anymore. To my knowledge that ive seen in my lifetime, its been around 20 or more years was the last when ive seen when someone was trading cards for cards and no MONEY was EVER involved at all. Even at conventions or outlets, theres always some cash that needs to be given to compensate that trade or deal to finalize it. Its been really for the last 2 to 3 decades that collecting or investing or BOTH that this hobby had its UPS and DOWNS through the years that has past. After the steroid era, the hobby of collecting has never been the same since. But when you get a player that is generational or a unicorn that goes above and beyond what a regular athlete are is beyond that exception. OHTANI is the only reason why i start watching baseball again. Thats the reason im starting to have interest in collecting sportscards again. Ive stopped collecting more than 2 decades ago. And now CAITLIN CLARK another phenomenol and generational player in the WNBA that my 2 nieces loves playing basketball now because of her. My nieces just like to ride there bikes and play some softballs with there friends. But now they are playing basketball for about 2 and half hours a day 3 times a week now 😅 lol. I just subscribed to your channel. I just happened to found your channel because it says VINTAGE cards vs MODERN that caught my attention in the first place LOL. Like you, ive also have some vintage and modern. Need to keep up in todays time and technology lol. Ive been living in the past thinking that its still 1995 😮LOL 😂.
Great video! I love junk wax and before. I miss collecting back then and how simple it was. These days there is to many parallels and numbered cards for me. Thanks for sharing.
Good evening, I just came across your vlog and I have about 5000 card's of all different sports and I also have a NHL PATCH COLLECTION WITH THE STORY CARD'S
Hey Steve, just found your channel. I liked listening to your thoughts and I agree that there should be packs that are affordable for kids like we had it. Nice card room and great shirt. Go Celtics 🎉🍀
I like modern collecting ! I appreciate the Low Produced cards ! yet, my ultimate goal is to own historical vintage cards !! I absolutely love baseball Football and boxing history !! In order for me to budget my card addiction I am only able to attain a vintage card when it is a very good deal ! I also like the low Numbered old school players in modern cards !! ...I really get my knowledge and advise from Vintage Collectors !! Like you Steve !! Appreciate your insight !! Thank You!!
Enjoyed your thoughts on the hobby, I've struggled with the vintage vs modern topic. For me, it's easier to collect modern because I follow sports so closely that I just know the players much better for modern cards versus vintage.
From what I recall, vintage cards were cool, neat, great, and at some point awesome. Newer cards I am hearing are sick, nasty, fire, and sometimes bangers.
Just stumbled on your channrl good content. If i may add my two cents i think part if the thing driving the want and interest in the value of the card is ebay and online pricing and graded cards.this skews the market and the hobby and indirectly affects pricing for the guys like us who want to buy and collect for the love of collecting
I'm 47 and started collecting cards in 85. When I started collecting again in 2018, I started back with my Mcgwire PC. Switched to modern and modern player in 2019. Love the parallels. But in 2024, there's just too much. Think I'm gonna slow down and possibly stop. I only buy singles of my PC player, which is a commonin beckett monthly terminology. One thing I like about modern us the retro designs. Like heritage, archives, and the flag ship inserts. Like how in 2024 its the 89 design. I love panini baseball 2022 and earlier with optic using retro donruss designs in chromium card stock and that Rated Rookie design 😍
I feel it's both I like selling cards and I have my favorite players I'll keep or buy. I think I'd rather buy a 26$ 1978 Rollie Finger's than a box of sapphire. The sapphire is for selling and the fingers is for keeping. i just did buy that card :)
I'm also from Massachusetts in my early 60's. I have no interest in these new cards. My cards are mostly pre 1981 although I have picked up some Tom Brady Cards from his Patriots playing days and a few "junk wax" rookies but only PSA 10s of Pedro,Chipper Jones and Mike Piazza!
I just subscribed to your channel. Fantastic video that really spoke to me. So much in fact I made reaction video. I tagged you in it. Uploading now. Let me know what you think. Cheers !
Great video, and great collection

Very nice! Center field is the best position!
Wow, now that's what I call VALUABLE, yes Sir.

You have a great eye, Steve. I like how you create a theme when you combine your cards. Definitely add Eli to that Manning set.

What part of Mass? Pittsfield here! Your accent says eastern Mass.
Hi. Your correct. I was born in Marlboro and currently live in Somerset.

one of my favorite cards is a warren moon 1990 score hot guns. its worth nothing but the design is great.
Great video!!! Loved the Bird / Magic set. Very appropriate on the day the Celtics win their 18th❤
Dude I love that T-shirt... Where did you get it?
Hi. Living in Massachusetts, it was around at different stores. I got my shirt while on Cape Cod.
Vintage may not go up fast, but they won't crash like this modern cards will when they become vintage.

I started opening older cards and go back and forth solely because of cost, some of the newer stuff is so costly
