    Great teardown Joey. Thank you for the mention too. Here's to 100k 🎉 The liquid metal is definitely proving to be an issue and I think it will be going forward on this revision too. Sony really need to change how these things are put together at the factory 😮

    When the next person on facebook talks crap about dry spots on apu and how liquid metal moves to one side when vertical and can leak, I'm linking them this video

      Well to be fair their are literally tens of millions of PS5’s out there standing upright with no issues at all.

    Always enjoy your videos.. We all know that the surfaces in these units, or any consumer products for that matter, are not manufactured or machined to exacting microscopic tolerances. That is why we have to use things like thermal paste and liquid metal to fill in the gaps. That is their job. My question is this, If you applied the liquid metal to the APU and heat sink like you did @15:36 then reassembled the PS5 and let it sit for a while, maybe move/bump it around a little bit in an attempt to simulate light shipping/use, when you open it back up would you find the liquid metal covering the processor as it did when you reapplied it or would you find the liquid metal as you did when you first opened the PS5, with bare spots/patches. I think it would be as you first found it with a spot that didnt seem to be covered, most likely that spot. I think that the surface of the processor and the surface of the heat sink are not perfectly flat or aligned with each other and would not mate together or lay perfectly flat together for a miriade of manufacturing reasons including machining/manufacturing of surfaces, the amount of solder applied to the processor, heat applied, ect.. If the bare spot, which seems to be in roughly the same spot each time, is microscopically closer together than the rest of the surface area, then the liquid metal, being a liquid of sorts, would naturally be thinner and seemingly nonexistent in that spot. I have seen thermal paste on some systems exhibit the same phenomena, albeit to a lesser degree. But under sufficient clamping pressure all mating surfaces are making contact, it is only when you relieve that pressure does the cohesive nature of the material allow it to contract/group together, with paste a little, liquid more so. Try experimenting with a flat surface, a flat piece of glass/clear plastic and water or any solution that is somewhere between a liquid and a paste.. I could be wrong, but until that is proven, then I am right. The truth is out there...

      Extremely interesting way to look at it, thank you for the comment 😊 I've worked on a few PS5's now, and can confidently say that when I remove the board from the bottom part of the chassis and turn it over to reveal the liquid metal, on MOST occasions I can see that the metal has been spread all over the die at least. The issue with this one for me, was that it looked like the liquid metal hadn't even been in contact with a certain part of the die, that's my bad completely for not explaining that more thoroughly.
      When you relieve the pressure between the plates, it's going to cause movement in the metal 100%, and it wouldn't of looked like that when the plates were pushed together. Maybe that was the case on this, I've just never seen such a clean die 😂

    • @warenmann1042
      @warenmann1042 ปีที่แล้ว

      Valid response, Personal experiences are hard to challenge. But still, Since this board had not been opened before, It would be interesting to see what the die looked like after you reapplied the liquid metal properly, reassemble the system completely and then pulled it back apart. Would it be fully covered as when you reapplied it, or would it be like you originally found it. I guess the world will never know. It was kind of you to respond..Thank You... @@JoeyDoesTech

    I remember reading an article a while ago, that Torx screws are better for automated production processes. Maybe the original PS5 was produced in a different factory or the factory upgraded to newer machines between the models.

    Joey that's not how you look at the controller's info to know if they're newer. Check right above the "Sony" logo on the back where it says "FFCID". The numbers end with number 1 and no letter for the first ones, then after the 1 comes with an "A", then with a "B" and the Volcanic Red ones end with a "C".

    I’ve seen a few teardowns now and all have mentioned the poorly applied Liquid Metal. I think this is going to force Sony to issue a version update or at the very least they’ll have to tweak their factory processes.
