Perfect timing with this rose video, as I plan to buy 3 David Austin roses this month. You were very helpful with your explanations. I didn't know about the grades and where to look for them, so I appreciate you so much, for this, and all your videos.
COOL FLOWER UPDATE: Thanks to your inspiration and coaching, ALL my "cool flower" starts are alive and thriving outside. Since Dec 1st when I put our the seedlings, they have all grown and look happy. Color me shocked with this new fall seed growing technique! It takes a lot of stress out of Jan/Feb/March, when my house is filled with way too many seed trays under lights.

This is very interesting and informative. I live in East Texas. We produce about 75 percent of the roses in the US. Tyler has a 14 acre Rose Garden where they breed new varieties. It should be on you bucket list especially when it is time for the Rose Festival in October. I have heard about how to choose roses my whole life and still didn’t quite understand. You have made it easier to understand how to choose a heather rose. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Earth Angel isn't a hybrid tea(another floribunda, actually. Very pretty with those cup shape blooms), and you missed the fact that hybrid teas have high centered blooms(and they remain that way until they fade away). Also, Grandifloras have slightly bigger blooms(but they are also clustered) than floribundas. But, the rest of the info was accurate and helpful.

I ordered 4 david austin for this spring to add to my 13 existing. One Eden climber, 3 shrub, the poets wife, jubilee celebration and princess of Alexander Kent. I love all flowers lol. I will probably add one more hybrid tea later this year. I have a zinnia and dahlia fascination as well. Happy gardening!! Great informative video.

Excellent. I would have loved to have this video when I was first buying roses .
Just to add my two cents.
Floribunda roses can have just as much disease as any other, I can tell you this from first hand experience. I have had to remove quite a few.
David Austin has many shrub roses, but so do many other companies, many of which are as beautiful or more than David Austin's and many are more disease resistant. This is not to say that I don't love David Austin roses but don't get stuck on just one breeder. Kordes roses for example are amazing and almost all bred for superior disease resistance.
Many new rose growers don't even know what a bud union is. For anyone interested, it's basically grafting two varieties together. A grafted rose will never be as healthy as an own root rose. It's life will be much shorter and a completely different rose can pop up from it's roots which means you will have to be careful and maintain the original rose. It will also not be cold hardy and will need some serious winter protection in colder climates. There are many own root roses available online. Most will be much smaller roses but they will catch up quickly if they are a good variety. I hope this helps someone out there, as I did not understand this at all when first starting out.

I've recently become obsessed with getting more roses after looking at the Davis Austin site. I have a few small rose bushes that are the 'miniature' roses you can get in the grocery store. I also have one big white rose (I honestly don't even remember where I got it from). I would love to get 6 or 7 roses to plant along the south side of my yard. I definitely want roses that are highly scented.

I bought my first two roses this year. Angel Face, because that's what I call my hubby and a Everblooming Cécile Brünner climber for the arbor I'm planning to add at the front of a raised garden bed (picked it mostly for not having as many thorns). Please do a video on caring for roses in NorCal 9b and soil/nutrients that keep them happy. 🙏💕

Cecile Brunner get huge in zone 9, recently saw a lady’s rose that was the biggest rose plant I’ve seen for a climber, decided this year to give it a severe prune to put her in check, but it was a beautiful sight to behold. Happy gardening!

Janey, how in the world did we ever enjoy our gardens, especially our roses, before Australian Man came along to set us straight? Geez, some people act like it’s their job to correct strangers on social media. Dear Aussie, Shhhh…nobody asked you. Also, please note that she’s made it clear many times that she’s not a professional, just someone who loves to learn & inspire others to grow beautiful things. Janey, thank you for sharing all the beauty in your garden and for being such a beautiful soul! 😘

I’ve been gardening since I was born since I’m the grandson of a farmer; but I never had roses, but I’m already looking at adding a 2nd. Being I want to support my local garden center, I’m waiting on there stock to come in, zone 8a Atlanta, Ga.

Good Morning, Janey! Thank you so much for this video! I've been contemplating adding some type of rose bush to our little garden and this really helped me. Oh question-- do most roses need lots of sunlight? I think I'll have to experiment a bit this year, take the plunge and buy one to see if it receives enough light. Floribunda--- here I come! Thanks again and have a great day.

    • @gardeningjunkie2267

Yes, roses need to be planted in full sunlight. There are a few exceptions that can take partial sunlight but not woodland type of shade. Olivia from David Austin for example does well in part sun.

Thanks for all the info!! I noticed they had these out at my Lowe's yesterday. The canes looked as though they had been dipped in a wax or something? Do you know what that is or why they do that?

    • @donnasgarden6495
      @donnasgarden6495 ปีที่แล้ว

The wax helps to keep the roses from drying out during shipping and at the nursery. Just make sure to prune the tips before you plant them and they will be fine!
