It puts a great deal of stress on the driver. The reason we old schoolers got into or love trucking is because we didn't have a boss breathing down our necks at work. Now we have stressed out drivers behind the wheel. smart........
Partially why I wanted to drive a truck in the first place is because I was sick of people looking over my shoulder all day and critiquing my work. I just want to be left alone
I feel the same way! Being a trucker is enough that it takes an emence amount of time away from family that now truckers are thinking of changing careers when the job they once loved is being corrupted by Corporate America! I'm not a trucker mind you, but I have been studying the manual and am making preparations to becoming one, but these cameras are rubbing me the wrong way....I feel uncomfortable with them that I might error just because its there!
I drove for a company that installed drive cam facing me and the road. They would haul you in if you sneezed!!!! It was used to intimidate us!!! I quit and many more older guys like me walked away. Over 30 years on the road and the reward was being called into the office to have a 25 year old guy with a business degree and has no clue about the industry talk down too me. Needless to say I went to a smaller company and less pay to avoid the stress.
Having a stupid boss riding along with me everyday. No way. I’ve got a lot to say about this and none of it good. Thanks, Dave for reminding me why I got out of this industry after 35 years. No more enjoyment or job satisfaction.
I gave up a good paying, go home everyday job because they installed cameras facing the drivers. They had a points system and they wanted you to stay below 100 points over a 90 day period, but you were given FORTY points for taking a drink ONE time. Not checking your mirrors every 10 seconds was 150 points. They were monitored by a third party company and once they put points on you , they wouldn't remove them even if they were in error. They assigned the cameras to trucks before they were installed, so naturally the installer accidentally swapped cameras on two of the trucks. One day one of those trucks had to be wreckered to the shop and the OTHER driver was accessed 700 points for speeding and tailgating even though you could see in the video it was hooked to a wrecker and no one was in the driver seat! And it wasn't even his truck!! To hell with those cameras
And those companies will only hire people who know the correct form of "there/their/they're". Plus you can't even spell "thier" correctly. Good luck pal

Agreed with the off duty "none of their business " when my kids were small they used to ride along for a week at a time, I certainly wouldn't want some freak watching them get dressed for bed!! You just don't know these days.
I see your point about the day cab situation. When I was running mills I had no less than 3 to 4 cameras trained on me depending on the cell of machines. I got a call on a Saturday asking why one wasn't running. I said "It's Saturday! I'm on hour 66 of the week and haven't had a single lunch break or more than 5 minutes to use the bathroom all week, but you guys in the office already know that because you got nothing better to do than watch me work." I slammed down the phone and that is the first and last time I ever got asked that question. Truckers are by no means the only workers who are on camera while working. I won't deal with having one in my truck. I definitely agree with the off duty point you brought up. That is my time not the company's.
Chris76-01 you will never have control of their footage period because they own it . It’s their property that’s it. Read my statement about this that I just posted it explains this more in-depth.

Trucking is supposed to be about freedom, and the big companies sell it that way. It's the biggest appeal to the industry aside from the money. The moment DMs can watch your every move, you may as well quit and get a desk job with a boss that hovers over you and micro-manages your day. It's the same thing. A forward facing dash cam is fine, I run one personally.
There is one time I loved that camera. A California DOT officer at a scale was yelling at me during an inspection trying to escalate me into a confrontation. I got tired of listening to him and i asked him if he would be comfortable with his boss seeing the video. That shut him up . He gave me my paperwork back with no violations and sent me on my way.
My company promised no cameras now the liars said everyone is getting cameras in there trucks and as my first trucking job I’m pissed I have a good dedicated day cab job and don’t wanna leave for something that might be worse but I can’t handle the camera in my face all day
They shouldn't have any cam facing you, you get calls that are private on your phone Bluetooth speakers or headset like emergency, medical, family faith etc it's not their dam business, like not ours to watch/spy on their corporate private conferences.
You’re right it’s not their business but it is their truck. If we choose to drive their truck with the camera in it then we are agreeing to it. If you don’t agree to it don’t drive their truck. I turn my camera off when I’m in the sleeper.
I recently turned down a driving job with a great local company simply because they have cameras in their trucks. I've dealt with the cameras before with a previous local company and told myself I'd never work for another company that had them. The cameras suck, no matter if it's OTR or local work.
They did a trial period with driver facing cameras in some of our trucks. Drivers threw a big enough 💩 fit about them that it was decided that we would only have outward facing cameras. The feeling of someone watching you all the time just didn’t fly.

Very well said. As an administrator for a company that has in/out facing cams I get the points drivers make but also understand companies wanting to safeguard their investments. Its a catch 22. We have a system that is triggered SOLELY by events such as hard braking, speeding, etc...it does not record 24/7 and we can NOT just call up a unit and check in, its also not live and our feeds come in within 24 to 48 hours. It really is not as intrusive as it seems. Having been a driver I DO understand and finally you make a great point, you should be able to cover it IF it gives you peace of mind while on your downtime, that is your time. Thanks for the great video.
No, I quit the airport for the same thing basically. I passed a million back ground checks, yet TSA wants to look in my lunch and stick a dirty probe in my coffee, by the way I quit then and there, TSA wore that coffee, best $3 ever spent. If u don't trust people, don't hire them.
Why would a employer hire anyone they thought needed to be bird dogged I would say it's upper management of a company that needs to be bird dogged more so than the employee!
The mega carriers have such a bad reputation these days that often they aren't able to hire guys with good records they'll hire anybody including people they don't trust and this is how they monitor them and everyone else is caught up in the same fix!
Some of the bus companies out there including school bus or going to this new system. Rolaids stops no eating or drinking. That’s the day I turn my keys and ridiculous. It’s hard enough to get bus drivers. Good luck ain’t nobody coming for a job doing that it’s hard enough to get a license for a school bus driver.
The best way to handle this is just don’t work for a company with driver-facing cameras. When they figure out that drivers won’t tolerate it, they will change it. Roehl’s use of driver-facing cameras is based on your safety record...or so I was told. They used to have a mandatory probationary period of 90 days from your hire date that you would have one, but they’ve since based it on your safety record. All companies should do this. It would produce better drivers I think. Leave the professionals alone and watch the ones with a poor history I say.
If every driver in the companies come together & go on a strike & park the trucks I mean all the drivers They have no other choice but to remove them But not everyone got the BALLS!!!
I would never let them try to control me like that or simply let them take over my privacy. Dash camera is enough facing forward, if you wanna know who's to blame.
Sysco has them and they use them against you big time. Every time you hit a pot hole or hit the brakes too hard the camera goes off and you better hope you were not on your phone or your fired. Thats why i quit
Those cameras are also hooked to the gps and other sensors on the truck. So if it detects a stop sign on your route and you accidentally roll through it at 5 mph, it will send your company a video of it.
It’s insane that this video was posted today! They just installed one in my team truck yesterday, and it’s supposed to be activated sometime next week. Me & my driving partner are so angry that they did it to us! I don’t mind a forward facing camera, but the one looking in, is both an invasion, and a way for the company to place the blame, and put our CDL’s at risk just so they can save $$ on insurance premiums. I’ve got $115K in savings, I got my experience & clean driving record, I’m taking both & starting my own company ✌🏼
I've seen mine go off and "save" with the cylon leds while I was parked, off duty and in the bunk. I always cover it at night now. Sometimes i forget to uncover it for a few miles in the morning. Haven't had a complaint yet from Roehl's safety department.
We have them, daycab fuel haulers, I've learned to live with it, they've calmed down on the "ball breaking" , seems they use it as leverage when needed
The two most common cameras "Smartdrive" and "samsara" don't allow dispatch to just turn on the camera in real time. If a driver goes into the sleeper birth and covers the camera dispatch won't ever know. The driver would have to set off a trigger to prompt the camera to start recording. Otherwise it isn't really doing much. It's just constantly recording and deleting footage unless it's accompanied by a trigger event. Unfortunately this isn't common knowledge to drivers.
Youd be ok with cameras in a day cab? Well what about when they get onto you because they say you don't check your mirrors enough? What about when they call you in for a talk because you stopped one foot over the line at a red light? What about if they call you in over not wearing a seat belt on a jobsite? Not a highway a jobsite off the road. What if they call in because they say you're following too closely? Sure if you want to be micro managed to the point you want to pull your hair out then have at it. They put one in at my last day cab job and I started looking for something else immediately. I left the old job as soon as the new job gave me a drug test. No notice. Nothing. They didn't deserve a bit of respect from me
In order to figure out whether or not your boss is watching a live feed, you would have to engage in some sort of activity that would get you immediately reprimanded… Such as : covering up the camera... talking on phone without hands-free device… Drive w/o your shirt on! Give the camera the finger etc.... You could catch them watching if they reprimand you for any of these behaviors....
That's one of the reasons i stop driving over the road. more and more companies are going with drivecams and i didn't want to go independent. Do i miss driving truck, yes and no. I miss been in the truck for sure but I don't miss the hassles with shippers, the idiot's drivers out there and been away of my family.
An Australian driver was filmed sleeping naked...Aussie law says On -duty monitoring only.. This company directors could face 2yrs jail if incident is pressed further.. Aussie laws also say no filming in a change room..what is a sleeper berth?
My grandfather has been trucking working for walmart for almost 30 years and they've found everyway to know what youre doing no matter what, every truck has camera inside the cab facing the driver and passenger and when i go with him sometimes its one of the most uncomftorble things ive ever experinced, knowing they hear you, and see you while you sleep, luckily the sun visor works perfectly as a cover for the lens so it covers it up
It is clear that employers may use video surveillance regarding the adherence to employee’s compliance with important safety rules. (Outward facing cameras) is permissible. When protecting the company against unintended consequences, or other liabilities, unduly thrust upon the company, by no fault of their own. As it is associated with “Inward Facing Cameras” Without the ‘employee’ signing a document thus giving permission to the employer that he/she can be monitored at any time? Then at present. The use of the Inward-Facing Camera(s). Is in direct violation of the 4th, 5th (self-Incrimination) & 14th amendments. Inward facing cameras installed in a truck are a violation of Human rights. To obtain any and all audio and visual movement inside the truck, the driver must waive all of his or her constitutional rights to privacy which is absurd. Unless the commercial driver signs a waiver surrendering all rights as a free citizen in a free society then the company should not be allowed to install it in the truck.
@@SmartTruckingDon't even need be a CDL vehicle anymore for these in cab facing cameras to be in. Be nice if they spent a fraction of the money on replacement chainsaw chains and other equipment as they do for the service fees of those cameras on each vehicle installed on.
my fleet has this all across Canada. The Teamsters (my union) did nothing to stop it from happening. But there are different laws in different problems and challenging this on a constitutional/privacy basis is difficult. We only have daycabs.
Here is a fact. When I worked for a crude hauling company in Oklahoma they had DRIVECAM. If they witnessed you doing 2 unsafe movements in a 3 month period you would lose your quarterly bonus. DRIVECAM only went off if you hard braked or turn sharp and quickly. Well drivers who approached stop lights would deliberately run them if they were close to changing red instead of stopping. They knew if they hard braked and the camera went off and they didn't stop in time that was an infraction which could lead to loss of bonus or even termination. So proof the cameras made the drivers unsafe and forced them to be risk takers for financial gain. I'll never work with another company with cameras.
Hi fellow truckers and Dave. Hey guys I'm stuck in a situation and just trying to find some answers. I'm 2.5 years into the industry. Guys I work for a big company for 5 months now and currently driving my 4th truck due to the others breaking down. This truck I received last month and upon doing my first inspection I realized the forward in cab camera was taped and glued over the lenses and it's quite hard to notice because it's black. So I just left it there the way I received it. I was made aware of the cameras and mic upon hire and Honestly guys as long as I do my job I really don't have a issue with it. However I take us truckers privacy over cameras any day of the week. So the other day I just received a phone call from safety accusing me of blocking the view of the camera with tape and along with in violation of having my phone in my hand. Mind you this incident happened 3 weeks ago and Yes I did have my phone in my hands, yes it hasn't been the first time. At the date and time they told me of the incident I remember that i panicked and reached for the GPS on my phone. I was in Chicago and lost. Just being transparent guys. ALTHOUGH I'm really confused here. IM sure you guys know why of course. Are these companies putting other cameras in the cab we are not aware of. Spy cameras someone called them. I really need some advice guys because I didn't tape that camera and yes I became complacent knowing it was taped so I reached for my phone. I haven't discussed this with safety because I'm trying to get some answers first. Although of course they accused me of this by leaving a voice-mail of ALL of this in detail. I surely hope somehow I'm maybe overthinking this and this unit has multiple camera lenses and they somehow recorded me. Again guys i received the truck with the tape on the camera ahead of time and guys I would tell you if I had done the taping. I didn't. I'm just really curious to find out if they did install another camera somewhere else in the truck and is it legal to have multiple cameras in the cab. At orientation I was told about the forward facing camera. Guys I have really no issue on cameras as I mentioned but if there happens to be multiple. Well then I'm definitely apposed to someone attacking my privacy and my rights. Please guys and Dave I need some advice and surely would appreciate it pointing me in the right direction. I want to do what's right when it comes to our individual rights and privacy. I'm pretty upset and don't want to overreact. So I'll try to be smart and certainly Hope to hear from somebody thanks. By the way Dave love your show and all the content. Your a good man.
The outward camera is my friend. The inboard? It depends on the ethics of the company. The company that I am leaving next week used the camera as a tool of subjugation and intimidation. Admin was also doing 'spot-checks' remotely triggering an 'event' on an almost daily basis (never on Sunday). When I complained, I was told the the camera was just glitching and that no video or audio was been sent. The next, and last time it "glitched" I said a pre-planned statement guaranteed to bring a response if the camera was in fact transmitting. The response happened within tem minutes to my private phone, followed by a "clarification' regarding cameras to all drivers the next day. The camera in my truck "glitched" again. That was three months ago.
Matheson trigas has implemented omnitracs. The tablet is synced with the onboard computer and I have an eld app with it. I drive local and am home every night. I think the main reason they like these tablets is the upper management ( before your local dispatchers, and your immediate supervisor, so they can’t save your ass anymore) is immediately notified if their is a “camera event” You don’t have to be in an accident to trigger the camera. Hard braking, large potholes, hard turns/ going over curbs will trigger it. AND EVEN ROLLING STOPS!! which I got in trouble for .. or “coached” as it’s called. So bs!
I absolutely disagree with driver facing cameras. . . They have audio and what if your in a disagreement with someone and they listen on a private conversation, hows that make you look. . . If it faces out side with no audio. . . . No problem here. . . I worked for a company that installed one and I cleaned out the truck. It's against my personal & private rights in my opinion. . . So many trucking companies to choose from that don't have them. . . Been driving 25 years never had one in a truck and don't plan on it either. Its a tool for a company to lay blame on the driver. . . . Thats all it sums up to be. If it was truly to protect themselves then they would only face outward with no inside audio. . . Just my opinion. Have a great day and be safe.
I agree with you Dave I can see both sides. But I would have a hard time with one looking at me. If it's there it needs to be tied into eld. Off duty-off camera!
I turn off my camera when I go off duty or in the sleeper or I cover it up and turn it off. You can turn OFF the driver facing camera only when the truck is NOT MOVING by entering 99999 ✅ on the smart drive camera key pad. It will stay off UNTIL you cycle the key switch from on to acc or acc to on. Then just repeat the 99999 ✅ to turn it back off. Again this is on the SmartDrive camera system. I don’t know about the other systems.
I would never work at a company that has them.
I put my money where my mouth is. Last job put one in and I left. Companies that use them have turnover like you wouldnt believe. So maybe they should factor that in vs insurance costs.

Even if you cover the lens, many can still hear everything you say! This is no good! They can hear and record any conversation you have!
Even if you cover it they can still listen. They have impressive audio quality. You can hear a pin drop
Good call!!
If every driver in the companies come together & go on a strike & park the trucks I mean all the drivers
They have no other choice but to remove them
But not everyone got the BALLS!!!
Just turned a job because of camera facing me I Said the reason why I'm driving a truck is not to be watched 24 hours a day .
Nope!
Get out now. These things add a ton of stress that makes the job not worth it.
I never even thought about teams! Man, that is an invasion of privacy cause the camera will run 24\7! That's more than I could put up with!
I would put tape on it!
Usually the trucks I am in are slip seat and most drivers puts the visor down to cover the drivers lense. I have even seen drivers unplug them.
They need to turn the camera around and see what we put up with.
I'm grateful I stopped trucking before electronic logs were instituted. It's getting worse and worse.
I've seen mine go off and "save" with the cylon leds while I was parked, off duty and in the bunk. I always cover it at night now. Sometimes i forget to uncover it for a few miles in the morning. Haven't had a complaint yet from Roehl's safety department.
Yeah my company trying get one there's no reason to have a camera facing us! No thanks I enjoy my privacy
Mercedes engines and a camera on me are deal breakers in my book.
Yeah, they would be for me too!
Hell no..I wont let them spy on me or listen to my coversations!
We have them, daycab fuel haulers, I've learned to live with it, they've calmed down on the "ball breaking" , seems they use it as leverage when needed
The only way camera should face is the front !
No notice. Nothing. They didn't deserve a bit of respect from me
If they use the camera like that, I'd be gone!!
In order to figure out whether or not your boss is watching a live feed, you would have to engage in some sort of activity that would get you immediately reprimanded…
Such as :
covering up the camera...
talking on phone without hands-free device…
Drive w/o your shirt on!
Give the camera the finger etc....
You could catch them watching if they reprimand you for any of these behaviors....
Yup! Be worth the experiment in my opinion! Dave
That's one of the reasons i stop driving over the road. more and more companies are going with drivecams and i didn't want to go independent. Do i miss driving truck, yes and no. I miss been in the truck for sure but I don't miss the hassles with shippers, the idiot's drivers out there and been away of my family.
So we have no constitutional rights while we are at work in our trucks? there's a lawyer asleep behind the wheel at this one
An Australian driver was filmed sleeping naked...Aussie law says On -duty monitoring only..
This company directors could face 2yrs jail if incident is pressed further..
Aussie laws also say no filming in a change room..what is a sleeper berth?
What you allow today multiplies tommorow.
You got that right!
So if I'm at work and they can film me 24/7, the elephant 🐘 in the room is shouldn't they have to pay me 24/7 while I'm in the truck? 🤔
Driver facing cameras are a big no for me , I do mind being watched and spyed on , on or off duty……
Excellent submission Mark and I couldn't agree more! Thank you!
Everyone should read Marks comments here!
I use a thick stocking cap to cover my Lytx camera at the end of each day. I work for a company that has them and they also record audio!
I work at a tree service outfit that just installed them in all the company vehicles. Talk about a Morale killer.
I bet!
@@SmartTruckingDon't even need be a CDL vehicle anymore for these in cab facing cameras to be in. Be nice if they spent a fraction of the money on replacement chainsaw chains and other equipment as they do for the service fees of those cameras on each vehicle installed on.
The day they put driver facing cameras in is the day I quit.
Quit my job last month over it
I'm I a sleeper. The windshield curtain covers it when I'm off duty.
No
my fleet has this all across Canada.
Yeah, that kind of treatment is not acceptable at all!
If you work in a factory or office the boss can watch you all day and all night. When it's check out time, surveillance ends.
Just take a piece of black electric tape and cut it the size of lens and put it on the inbound lens and go about ya career like I do lol
Greenhorn
They,[ the company ] claims they don't watch it anyway, so why not!
Pilots don't have any cameras in the cockpit and so what is the difference?
we have them. Im not a fan...
Most companies will not release the footage to help you and subpoenas aren't always easy to get.
No way... Jose...
