    Brilliant work. Thanks again! I totally understand about switching careers. I've got a PhD in English, another PhD in archaeology, and a CDL with all the fun endorsements (including school bus). Whenever academia treats me like crap, I resign and climb into my rig. When I miss the students or digging up bones, I get back to that. Just call me the schizophrenic trucker professor.

    I was with ten companies and was treated like shit at each one. Was on welfare so my wife and kids could eat every day. I went through those things you described and dam near died fro pneumonia, I came down with pneumonia because I was starving. I went from 191 pounds down to 159 pounds in two months because I had no money to get food. Being treated like I was less than an animal is why I gave up trucking.!

    Agreed 100%. I’m only 24 and been doing this for 3 years. As soon as I came in, I had the support of a career truck driver who taught me everything I know. He also taught me that at the end of the day, it’s about me as a driver. The first company I went otr with showed exactly what he was talking about. My boss loved my attitude and tried so hard to keep me from leaving after going through multiple screwings. I hauled non stop for this company but they kept screwing me and my pay so I left. At a local gig now and love it. If it wasn’t for him, I would of kept taking the beatings because I wouldn’t of known what else to do.

    Unfortunately I know of a few dispatchers that were abusive to their drivers, and most if the time I stood up for myself, and they didn't like it! They made you drive in bad weather, drive over hours, give you NINE stop runs 'til you get home at 5 in the morning, and they didn't give a shit!

    I got into trucking just short of a year ago and I was an EMT working in medical transport for 10 years before this. I loved being an EMT but there was no money in it. As a truck driver, no wife or kids and I can stay out as long as I want, I feel like I have gotten a big upgrade as far as pay. I wish I could have gotten into the trucking industry sooner.

      I started at one of the mega carriers and I worked for them for 8 months. I just recently left them to go to a smaller company. The first company had 20,000 trucks and the "smaller" company that I work for now has 5,000 trucks. But, the difference between the two of them is huge. I get paid more than I did at the mega carrier plus I feel less like a truck number and more like a person to these people. I had a problem with the truck they gave me when I got my assignment. It was on hold for maintenance and that was not known when it was assigned to me. They fixed the problem and got me into another truck the same afternoon. The mega carrier would have had me waiting for three or four days to find another truck.

    Family Owner are the best. I get a high hourly rate for only barely a year of experience. They're super nice and generous with money, gifts, bonuses etc. and having your back. They're companies you can rely on and actually enjoy working for. I'm blessed to have found the company I work for. They took me when I was only 3 months OTR. Started me out at $24/hour and it's increased by a dollar and 50c sense in the last 9 months. The mega carrier I worked for at first was alright. 47 cents a mile. But they had a lot of problems and when pay period came around I was always short what I was owed. But truck drivers should be respected.

    I understand the pay need to be better. I mean for crying out loud if your away from your family and the house for any period of time you figured they'll pay you very well. Well I was wrong on that 800 to 900 week paychecks to be away from your family not worth it, crap you can make the same or more running local and be home everyday.

  • @MegaGeorge1948
    @MegaGeorge1948 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I agree. But if you cannot find a job in trucking that gets a decent paycheck for your family and respect for you, try getting trained in a trade. A trade does not need college. I spent a few years in aircraft mechanics training at East Coast Aero Tech (non-military) to get an FAA Airframe and Powerplant License. I liked the trade school. If you did pretty well in grade school (K-12), shop math is not rocket science.
    But I liked working indoors. So I learned how to be a machinist, programing, setting up and running CNC turning centers and millers. That was my trade for over 45 years making stuff for trucks, cars, planes, aerospace, etc. (I worked for 55 years total from paper routes, lawnmowing, dish washing, etc.).
    I'm retired now at age 68 with a 401K, two pensions, and an IRA. I'm not rich. But I sent two daughters to college. I own my own home. I Have two cars and other stuff. And have a loving wife for 36 years. I give God the glory for that. In a trade, you will almost always have a job. If I was laid off, I would have another job in a few weeks ( I was laid off 3 times in my lifetime). It also helps to live here in the USA that gets opportunities for those who want to reach one's potential.

    I drive for one of the big, bad mega carriers, Schneider, and I don't feel like I'm disrespected or treated like dirt. I'm always getting good miles, have a good working relationship with my driver manager (DBL for us), and I don't complain about bringing home 800-1000 week; it works for my financial situation.

    • @MartyChristianSoldier
      @MartyChristianSoldier 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is because when you can put anyone in a truck and they can get it out of the parking lot they think anyone can do it, but when you have 40 tons sliding off of a mountain and you bring it home they don't see that, but they do get to see the outcome of the people that don't bring it home, so they know better. That is just what they want you to think.

    After driving for over 30 years I still get treated like I'm just a truck driver.
    Always kept a clean license and never had a bad cvor.
    It is a thankless job. Always living to work and sacrificing so much.
    I always said that if we all shut it down from coast to coast for one day the economy would never recover.
    I found a good company in Ottawa and my boss is the best one I have ever had. Because he's been there.
    Hes the reason that I'm still proud to be a trucker.

    I work for Schneider and I cam tell you there is no way that they would want you to wait for a trailer to be loaded for 3 days. Now a days its different. They will pull you off of the load and send you somewhere else. Yeah you might have to bobtail a hundred miles or so depending (we get paid for bobtail miles) but they won't keep you there for 3 days. In fact why they didn't at least leave and come back is beyond me. That's crazy.

    The hardest part of trucking today is finding a place to park there just isn’t enough safe places

  • @KentuckyRanger
    @KentuckyRanger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    AMEN!
    I got out of the OTR game just in time.
    Three years was enough! I got into LTL for the next 6 years, then I finished out my 20 year career driving regional.
    While driving OTR, I was treated well, and treated worse than a vagrant.
    I was banned from Nobel Cisco in Denver, CO over their shitty attitude towards drivers.
    I was treated like and idiot at the Good Year distribution center in Rocky Mount, NC and told to never come back. That was in 1989, and I have yet to ever, and never will, purchase ANYTHING with the Good Year logo on it.
    Then there was Heilig Meyers! I was 5 minutes late for my delivery, so I had to wait, ALL DAY, to get unloaded...
    I too, have seen families, living out of trucks.
    I've talked to drivers from such abysmal companies as, Prime, Pride, Covenant, PST, CRST, Swift, J.B. Hunt, Schneider, C. R. England, Buffalo Group, the list goes on and on...
    I worked for PST, and I can assure you, the coined phrase "Poor Starving Trucker" was VERY true!
    I used to spend days in places, waiting on their dispatchers to give me something, anything!
    I'd hope and pray that times have changed for the better, but I seriously doubt it has.
    In fact, I know it's gotten worse!
    Back in my time OTR, we had tattletale computers, but the advent of satellite communications on trucks was in it's infant stage back then, so I was fortunate to have missed out on that wonderful BS...
    Back then, they had strict rules about bob-tailing etc, but I got around it...
    They had us living and dying, by the infamous hubometer!
    What they didn't know was, I had a wrench! So I got out and about anyway! I'd say if anything happened, like a fleet manager, or dispatcher would have caught me out bob-tailing unauthorized, I'd have been fired, but I didn't care!
    You know, the really sad thing is, I've also been to some suppliers that were so awesome! But unfortunately I can't remember the names.
    It really is true, that you remember the bad much more than the good.
    There was one supplier, I think they manufactured wire products, who had the most imaculate drivers waiting room!
    It had couches, recliners, a big screen TV, free coffee, pastry's, and fresh made sandwiches!
    And if memory serves me, I think they even had a private shower.
    There were others that weren't too bad either, but I can't remember...

    Absolutely, Dave, the only way to hurt this industry is to quit driving completely, jumping from truck to truck won’t change anything because the freight is still moving down the road.
    Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters didn’t play around.
    When the freight stops moving, they get the message real quick.

    Question: Why don't truckers unionize?

    • @SmartTrucking
      @SmartTrucking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Good question. I think there are a few reasons. We are now such a diverse and such a widely spread out group geographically that it makes it difficult. A lot of us are older and don't have the new social media tools or skills to help us organize and for a lot of older guys like me the word 'union' is a dirty word after the Teamster experience and Hoffa. It was corrupt. It's just easier to retire or get a different job, I suppose. I had hopes for Operation Black and Blue there, a month or so ago, but I guess the bottom line is we just can't seem to all get together. Dave

    I work for PRIME as a company driver. I'm not going to defend them, but can tell you things have gotten better. I'm treated respectfully by my Fleet Manager. I am new so it doesn't behoove me to lease right now. I can't complain as I'm able to make ends meet. I never go hungry. Thanks for standing up for truckers. Me being a rookie; watching your videos does help. Also. PRIME trains their people well. They give you the tools to be as good as anyone can be when starting out. Going out with a trainer sucks, but it don't last forever.

    Schnider uses dangerously old equipment as well. I was a buyer for a large grocery chain. Had a Schnider trailer being loaded with cooking oil LITERALLY snap in half while the forklift driver was in the trailer.

    You're right about Schneider 100%
    I drove for them in 97 back when they had 1.5 million mile cabovers with 55mph speed restriction. I was lucky to get out in six months because I didn't have contract with them. And still they marked me as (quit under a load) when we dropped off the truck in there LA terminal when they brought us home with my team partner, after a month and a half being on the road. Don't wanna remember all the BS I was put through with those guys. But again you start from the bottom and work your way up. THAT WAS THE VERY BOTTOM now that I look back. All you Schneider drivers, as an owner operator I feel for you. Be safe out there, take care of yourself and stay motivated. Remember, nothing will change until you change. ✌️😎

    As a "salaried professional" I worked more hours for less money than the average trucker. I was jealous of every rig I saw on my way to work each morning. You are describing what it means to work for just about any large business today.

    • @gregm.846
      @gregm.846 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No you don't...My average work week was 70 hours and that is no exaggeration. You try staring at something for 70 hours where 30 seconds of inattention will get you killed. You're clueless about the job. There is so much wrong with trucking only convicted felons should be doing it.

      Greg M. Every job has its ups and downs. I work for Safeway pulling trailers from the distribution centers to the stores. On the weekends, I work at the Funeral home. I'm helping the embalmer, I'm dressing up the deceased, cremating people, ect..
      Don't assume Trucking is the worst job in the world, because I've been there done that.

    I'm hauling for Henderson, and I gotta tell ya -- this company really takes care of their drivers. I get close to 3000 miles a week, get home time when I want it. And when it comes to pay, no complaints here. Great company, not too big, first name basis with their drivers. I could've done a hell of a lot worse, for sure.

    Thanks for telling your stories. It makes a big difference to me to know the realities behind these silver lining trucking companies trying to sell us while we all know they don’t care about the drivers. Their main objective is to make their bank accounts fatter and fatter and the drivers keep driving and before you know it 40 years has gone by and they have nothing saved. No home, no car, no wife and not even a dog to keep them company. So be careful drivers. If you’re going to driver for a company make sure the pay is good to cover mortgage payment, car payment, all kinds of insurance, health, fitness and good food on the table while in the truck or off the truck. Otherwise let them drive their own trucks. We don’t need their jobs. We can go farming and live on what we grow. That’s what America was made for and that’s what it must go back to. Let the technology and industrial machine eat themselves out and sot into a stale and broken machines. We are not going to make them wealthy while they’re making us sick to stomach, homeless, hungry and poor.

    That shirt you’re wearing, is that a reference to the tv show? If so, right on! You’re right on the money too, I just left a company of 2 years cause they just kept treating me like a joke, so I found another local company, it’s a family ran dump truck outfit but their truck are much, much cleaner, better maintained, better hours & better benefits. I’ve been around long enough to know that there’s a big difference between when the owner says we maintain our trucks & when the owners say they maintain their trucks & the employees back him up. That’s the kind of company I wanna be working with. Love your videos too, btw!

I am getting ready to file some lawsuits against a few. I have my own company and have had driver's and contractors cost me a pretty penny. My other half has cost me about $200,000.00 in the last 4 years alone.

    This will sound crazy but the reason I even watched this video is because I was playing American Truck Simulator and I got curious about the real thing. I am happy in the profession I am in already and make good money. However, this man reminds me of Chuck Harder who had a radio program years ago called "For the People" and what you just stated in this video is exactly what Chuck used to preach back in the day. Thank you for your time explaining what used to be common sense in old school America.
