Even running smaller acres getting a second tractor could be very justifiable. Being able to run 2 tractors in order to get crops planted even if it’s a day sooner sometimes can be essential to the bottom line of making a profit.
Definitely, there are small farms around where I live in Northern Aroostook County that have multiple tractors especially when they are designated to things like planter/bailer only and others for tillage hell even a couple 4020s come in handy whatever you prefer. Loving the vids guys. 👍
I would buy a second tractor soon, the price of equipment is probably going to keep going up for the next two years. And with only one tractor a break down brings you to a full stop. Also might want to look at a older tractor that can still be retro fit with auto steer and monitors
The grass will help pull moisture out of soil. Will also scavenge nutrients. Grass in corn is not your friend. Big yeild reduction if left alive. Generic Select herbicide works in michigan for volunteer corn. Talk to your rep. They will get you straightened out.
Hell yeah! Grant... You are such a huge inspiration to me. If I hadn't found your channel. I don't think I'd be as successful in the diesel ag mechanic industry! One day... I would really love to meet you in person. By the way, that 6.0 sounds nice, but my 1997 F250 7.3 with a 4 in axle dump straight pipe could give it a run for it's money.
Hey Grant. I love watching your videos. I have watched since the beginning of this channel. I'd love to meet you. Of course I'm not quite old enough to have a farm. But you are part of the reason I want to be a farmer when I'm able to. Keep up the great work!
If u get another tractor u should get a bit newer 7000 or 8000 series john deere tractor. Like a 7930 or 8230 for example. Those 30 series are reliable, simple and easy to maintain
What Jim said. The reverse thread lets the rotation of the opener tend to tighten the bolt. Hence standard threads on one side and reverse on the other.
Grant and Spencer , you guys are awesome. Definition of family. Beauty job on the "bush fix" on the planter. Who needs John Deere?? Jk keep on rocking. Love your channel
Great video and so exciting And you guys are genius when it comes to fixing things just like old time farmers but you're the youngest Be safe looking for that corn and beans to pop through shortly
Another tractor would be ideal someday. If you were to have an unexpected breakdown during crunch time or say the engine goes out and it has to be overhauled depending on dealer parts available and machining it could take a week or so to get done. I hope plant 22 is going good so far. Be safe and keep up the great work guys.
As a crop consultant kill that corn with your bean pre all that competition is just a yield drag, also if you want to get out earlier in the spring from the look of your farm a fall burn down program after you vt it would help you get out earlier with little to me weeds and it will help the ground dry out faster!
Hey Grant, Im in Davenport IA visiting my dad and google says your in Ankeny IA, my great uncle has about 180 acres in Mechanicsville IA which is about 2 hours from you
Grant just so you know. Thoes arnt called openers. Thoes disk that creat the seed trench are actually called true V’s. But deer has the backwards thread on the left side because of the way the blade turn when in the ground. Hope you guys have amazing summer n get the fields sprayed.
our 7100 has a opener that does the same thing, the bearing in it is what squeaks. The tighter you get the bolt on it the worse it gets, i would recommend adding a very small washer or maybe 2 or 3
Nice video we got done planting this Wednesday we’re hoping to start spraying and put 28 nitrogen on this week. I personally would buy another tractor this summer or maybe closer to fall and maybe invest in a vertical tillage tool or chisel. For a tractor I recommend a 4440 or a 4640 come harvest time you won’t regret it.
This just makes me smile man you are doing such a great job!! Hope this season goes great for you!!! I new tractor would be nice what type you thinking? But also new ground is important more ground potentially more money more money more equipment/land!!
Grant if you haven't figured out why JDhas left hand threads on one side and right hand on the other well you fegure it out. It's the same reason Studebaker did it in the 1950s. Glad y'all got planted before the storm.
That's amazing that the ground is still wet. You were talking about left handed threads. If the nut is on the left side of disk and the top of the disk rolls forward. The disk keeps the nut tight. Same if the nut is on the right side with right handed. Hope this helps. I may have missed the video but I was wondering about the dually. What was wrong with it when you took it in to the shop? Awesome videos guys. 👍🚜
I love that even when it’s hot they crack jokes also glad spectacular Spencer is around To help Grant. That’s the most deep friendship ever. I’m a emotional wreck lol 😂 keep up guys. Spencer say holy biscuits once please lol 😂
We have 2000 acres in Missouri and we finished planting on may 23 last year and now it’s may 21 and we only have 100 acres planted and it just rained all day today also
When looking at tractors, don't be afraid of checking out a Massey ferguson, much more affordable than a green one and if you get a CVT transmission they are very efficient
I guess we both have a neighbor named Russel. Mine has an old Oliver tractor and plants a few things in his large garden field, or just a very small field.
I am small. One driver. 3 tractors get used a lot. 2090 case planting mainly. FORD TS 110 FWA drag, spray, older smaller field cultivator. (Sold it’s disc). Main MF 7622. But with few changes one tractor can replace another. Put duals on case it does most TS 110. TS can fill in much slower, smaller for MF. Right now 4wd are imo the cheap hp deals.
Because you have a 12r planter and a 6r corn head crooked rows between passes are nothing to worry about, if you went to an 8r with a 12r planter you’d then start to have problems shelling corn between planter passes
I spray for a fertilizer plant here in Southern Indiana for a living, that field ain't near as bad as you think. We spray some before people plant and some people we follow the planter. It's a personal preference for some people.
You could get a articulating tractor . We like to call them cheap horsepower. You could keep that tractor you have now and use it for planting . And have a bigger tractor for tillage
I wish you luck dude farming is fun no matter the size of your operation our family farm is a little bigger than grants but isint massive but I wish you luck I really enjoy it and it is a lot of learning and hard work but it always pays off
I'm nine and I've had this dream Sens i was six I have so many toys and so many games I even performed fs22 on my pc that is made from my old trampolean and has three screen I have a shifter that is hooked up to it and a steering wheel that is hooked up and pedils that are hooked up to it
Hey grant first generation farmer here as well o highly suggest you try and get another tractor especially for heavy tillage work your gonna tear that poor 8110 up get something like a 8970 or a 9400 something that’s built heavy and older and not crazy expensive
We are gonna have a 8320r we are trading in at the end of the year very strong good tractor will probably have around 5 thousand hours good rubber front and rear duel's
The reverse thread is to prevent loosening of the bolt
@Andy Pedro different gasses have different threads to prevent improper hookup with the wrong gas with the wrong lines
Even running smaller acres getting a second tractor could be very justifiable. Being able to run 2 tractors in order to get crops planted even if it’s a day sooner sometimes can be essential to the bottom line of making a profit.
I got a second tractor just to have one be raking hay while the other is on the baler, but it’s come in handy for so many other things!
Agreed, you definitely should get a second one
Yes you have a fall back. Comforting to know you can still operate
Definitely, there are small farms around where I live in Northern Aroostook County that have multiple tractors especially when they are designated to things like planter/bailer only and others for tillage hell even a couple 4020s come in handy whatever you prefer. Loving the vids guys. 👍

Every year is different and every year we learn something new. Farming is a lifestyle enjoy what you do that's all that matters.

Hello from Saskatchewan, Canada great videos thanks for sharing
If u get another tractor u should get a bit newer 7000 or 8000 series john deere tractor. Like a 7930 or 8230 for example. Those 30 series are reliable, simple and easy to maintain
Yahoo's you guys did it!!! Yes having a second tractor is so helpful. We went several years back to 1 tractor it was a challenge
You guys are so cool-smart can really solve problems - thanks for sharing!
Spence that field fix was good.
Love u guys,alway slogging along,n yes a second tractor needed.☘️🇨🇮👍👍
Nice repair gentlemen, late night, had seed left, and you beat the heavy rain
Love it!!! From SA. HOPE FOR THE BEST!!!
I usually keep an old coffee can in the tractor for shuffling seed it helps quite a bit 😂
What Jim said. The reverse thread lets the rotation of the opener tend to tighten the bolt. Hence standard threads on one side and reverse on the other.
Great video and great job to two very smart and hardworking young farmers.
Love the video's you and ur brother r doin great and always nice to have a 2nd person around to help
Thank you for your videos Grant Hilbert Farms

Grant, Always handy to have a tool box on board with Odds & Ends such as bolts, nuts, washers andmost common spanners etc and other hand tools.
Our 12 row planter is the same way, shears the bolts off the ridge markers almost once every 2-3 fields
Hell yeah love planting season!!
Go Grant! Season 2 off and running!

Hey Grant, you may want to leave some of that dirt in the field you have all over, then leave the Grease on the equipment, rather than on you!lol

If you put a Jean pant leg on the end of you tender wagon you can shut the flow off to move to the next box.

“Holy sh. We can make it” 🤣
@20:15 as Travis from How farms work and the rest of the story would say, “sliding across the finish line with your hair on fire”.
I love your videos and they're awesome
That 8260r that Zach has would be a very good second tractor.
You should put a front londer on the 8110 and keep the good work
I love that even when it’s hot they crack jokes also glad spectacular Spencer is around To help Grant. That’s the most deep friendship ever. I’m a emotional wreck lol 😂 keep up guys. Spencer say holy biscuits once please lol 😂
Yep, they sure are nice brothers!
We have 2000 acres in Missouri and we finished planting on may 23 last year and now it’s may 21 and we only have 100 acres planted and it just rained all day today also
Hey grant once you get more acres get a John Deere 7930 which has 220hp as your 2nd tractor. So you pull that landoll VT disk.
A JD7930 would fit him perfect!
Backwards threads keep them tight because over time the the bolt will sneak loose from the direction of the opener disc
hey grant, just a tip, nutrien ag solutions sells dyna-gro and dekalb seeds and they are fantastic
Love your vids bro keep it up.
When looking at tractors, don't be afraid of checking out a Massey ferguson, much more affordable than a green one and if you get a CVT transmission they are very efficient
we bought a new tractor this year so we can run 2 and it is so much better after farming so many years with 1 tractor well worth the investment
Love the videos I like your farm and its setup looks cool
It’ll be interesting to see how those beans turned out when you were planting in rain normally they don’t come out very well
What true American Farmer doesn’t own a 4440? #DoItForReagan🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I guess we both have a neighbor named Russel. Mine has an old Oliver tractor and plants a few things in his large garden field, or just a very small field.
Hey i know you’re having trouble with tillage from cornstalks but you should buy a roller to flatten them, it works where i live (Ontario Canada)
Great Video Grant and Spencer I Love The Vids I Am A Big Fan Of Your Channel My Name Is Bryer Floyd And I Love It.
These roleplayes are getting realistic
Yes Grant, buy a second tractor.. it will make you ready for more acers when you find some!
Strip tilling would be a good idea, really increases bean yield in our area

Right now 4wd are imo the cheap hp deals.
Hell yeah great content
you need orange permatex brand thread locker. orange holds like red but comes off like blue im told.
Maybe keep a list of washers and bolts needed in the field and a tractor box.
Keep talking up a second tractor...LOL
Because you have a 12r planter and a 6r corn head crooked rows between passes are nothing to worry about, if you went to an 8r with a 12r planter you’d then start to have problems shelling corn between planter passes
Hey Grant, excellent video.
You were talking about you "dont run many acres."
How many acres do you run?
I think in the beginning he said he had 180 acres. First farm he bought is 100 acres, then he bought another one with 80
@@whitebuffalo6071 Thanks
Maybe a older R8 or R7 deer if you are lucky . Great video Grant
I spray for a fertilizer plant here in Southern Indiana for a living, that field ain't near as bad as you think. We spray some before people plant and some people we follow the planter. It's a personal preference for some people.
Agree, I was a commercial applicator in Nebraska, this is just some pennycress. It’ll be dying off soon
Your next tractor should be a red one since CASE sponsors you on your American Farmer game. 😉
You could get a articulating tractor . We like to call them cheap horsepower. You could keep that tractor you have now and use it for planting . And have a bigger tractor for tillage
Our neighbor runs what I believe is a JD4630 on his planter and 8400 for tillage.
That was like a Farm Sim plant, down to the last seed.
I love your vids!!!!
Turn and burn grant good video dud
All planters have left hand threads they do that so it won't come loose it s turning the way you tighten the bolt
Yo grant! Loving these videos, I wanna become a farmer one day so bad.
I wish you luck dude farming is fun no matter the size of your operation our family farm is a little bigger than grants but isint massive but I wish you luck I really enjoy it and it is a lot of learning and hard work but it always pays off

I think a second tractor would be a good investment just make sure this one’s red 😉
Dude like a 6000 series tractor for like spraying and wagons would be good
Hey Grant love the tractor the 8000 series is the way to go if you wan a good tractor look at a 2004 John Deere 8420
We are gonna have a 8320r we are trading in at the end of the year very strong good tractor will probably have around 5 thousand hours good rubber front and rear duel's
color paint all the left handed bolts on all your equipment, perhaps that would help in the future
For the 2nd tractor I'd look at the jd 7000/7010 series
hey Grant your next tractor should be JD 8230/7800/4850/7820 or 8335R
An 8335r would be way too expensive for just a small farmer, but the other tractors you mentioned are probably good options
Around next season, you should maybe buy a Case, a 7100’s or 7200’s
@Grant Hilbert : Grant, we run about 130 acres and have three tractors so with the amout that you have i suggest getting at least another tractor
I highly suggest this get a older 4wd Deere for tillage duty’s you never wanna beat your planting tractor with tillage work
