Johnny Kee - Preparing and Seeding his Garden [4 steps to Planting]

- Preparing and seeding a vegetable garden bed are the focus of this video at Johnny and Linda Kee's farm in Arkansas where they have several garden plots where they grow vegetables, donating much of the bounty to locals. Johnny shows us how he prepares the seedbed and plants a plot of beans.
Joe met Johnny on a wagon train where he was providing operating the chuckwagon and providing food for the travelers. He has retired from the competitive chuckwagon circuit.
He explains that he prepared the bed the previous fall by adding 15 cubic yards of compost, 3000 pounds of chicken litter and 1500 pounds of lime and turned it under 18 inches. The previous day he plowed the wet soil so it could dry out a bit. He does not use commercial fertilizer or chemicals.
He uses a small tractor/mower with various implements he has made or modified himself.
STEP 1:
Johnny double discs the field to break up the soil
STEP 2
He hooks up a double plow and does a shallow run. Then he repeats with the plow deeper.
STEP 3
Next up is a type of cultimulcher/harrow implement that smooths out the hills that are perfect for planting.
STEP 4
Johnny shows us up close how his planter works.It can work by automatically seeding or, when the hopper is removed, has a seat in which someone sits on and drops seeds manually. Today he uses the hopper with the special plates for various seeds and planting distances. He is planting beans in this field at 6 inch intervals. We watch as he and his planter plant perfect rows.

Great job building your attachments, I use a rototiller on my tractor 🚜 but I built a bedder on the back of it so I can till it and bed it all in one motion.

As I am sitting in my office on my Texas Panhandle homestead and ranch, and it is 10 degrees outside this morning. This really gets my gardening and farming juices going. I am way behind on getting ready for a early spring (March here in the panhandle) gardens and cover crops. Need to get the horses up and tuning them up.

I liked what you done ✔️ with the planner. Would like to the beans when they come up also at harvest time
seems like a roto-tiiler and hard rake would work just fine for a 1 acre plot hard part would be watering and maybe harvesting...but that is life of a farmer...well worth the physical exercise

I love the home made welded sled with re-bar and milk crats with cement blocks for extra weight. I going to weld me up something now got me motivated. He took old horse farming plows and welded them up for a tractor. Horse size sleds would be perfect size and cheap to modify for compact tractors great working historic pieces too. Just aped in.
Looks good to me. I use the same method with my tiller. Wish I had a little tractor. Right now wouldn’t be quite as useful because the garden I currently have doesn’t have room for a tractor. Oh well, can always dream.

This is so amazing!!!! My golly it's that time of the year AGaiN, HOLY COW!!! WHERE HAS TIME GONE, 😵 WITH WINTER ENDING AND with March jus around the corner, and as soon as the ground thaws out, I may (only) start to rotor till, since my yard for my garden is significantly tiny compared to yours. I've noticed if I rotor till my ground several times, and make it very soft, like you did, my God my cucumbers/tomatoes/watermelons seems to come out pretty good!!!!!! Even the dang deer come n feast on my watermelons, at 2/3/4 in the morning, where's my rifle, 😭😭😭, no, no rifle, jus jokn 😅😂🤣🤣😂😅 but yes I've seen deer come down and eat. You young man did a MAGNIFICENT JOB, BY PLANTING FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE, ECT,

I have a question… I’m transplanting over 100 white oak tree seedlings from cone shoots going in to 2 quart pots.
I have peat moss, potting soil, worm castings I made myself, chicken manure, Blood & bone meals and Mikro-Myco.
I need help with the portion ratios???
I was thinking 70:30 and combining the potting soil, worm castings, chicken manure, Blood & bone meals together for 30% of the mix, 70% peat moss and just sprinkle the Mikro-Myco in their roots.

Very nice just be careful working wet ground you will get a hard pan if you do it a lot, but I know you know this. You can always rip it or chisel plow too.
Could you elaborate? Do you mean in the early spring when you can't wait to work the ground and it's still a little muddy from snow melt?
@@waynegretzky8464 Yes in the spring time never work wet ground ever if you can. It does nothing but harm your ground.
@@markjordan1765 oh thank you very much, also one more, I just moved to Maine soils a little rocky and I'd like to get amending my beds a little before I plant. Do you think smaller troy roto tiller would damage or are you just saying it's from compaction fr the tractor I have a small international cub. Thanks a bunch mate! And happy spring it's coming 😜
@@waynegretzky8464 You should be just fine. Just be carful with really wet ground. We use large tractor to work ground and never had a problem. Plant green crops and turn them in when you are done and this will give you organic matter in your soil.
@@markjordan1765 okay awesome that is good news just because I'm so behind I need to build cold frames but work ground first most of it is virgin soil. I plowed up the sod In August and did a test plot good growth! Healthy crop a beans n lettuce. But I no it's still hard pack underneath my property more of a deer farm than anything right now lol. @@ralphross2357 If you'd've heard an Agronomist speak then you'd know how proud I am of the lack of 'degrees in Agriculture (Industrial)' I hold. The young kids emerge from those courses sounding like robots because they have been brain-washed. Or made newly-ignorant. What I know is what works; and it looks, acts and smells like a permanent layer of humus.
