I started my sawmill and wood shop full time in March this year. I had to start out with loans to buy 2nd hand tools. Credit for a sawmill and for a couple truck loads of logs. Then I floundered around trying to find my niche. It was great to hear from someone else who has been through this.
Live edge slabs seem to be my main seller now. I am making my own furniture more and more too. I have a small showroom I am setting up in the warehouse as well.
But since my main source of income vanished I had to jump into this full time so I have struggled through. I figure if I make it through the winter, I will be all set next year.

I will never reach the level of productivity or revenue that your business has, but the information contained in this video is pure gold for those who do. Even for someone like me that will continue to expand my shop to a lesser degree, I think there’s a ton of helpful advice here. Thank you.

@@alexandersangster7137 till now i was doing projects for friends and family, but now i am starting making christmas decor on scroll saw and we will see how it goes, but already i have a few people interested.
Thing that helped me a lot at the start was just buying the right tool for the job. It is posibble to build a lot with a circular saw but its problematic at times and buying a proper table saw was a game changer.

What's working for us is cutting boards and charcuterie boards. Live edge tables are hot right now too. Hang in there @alexandersangster7137

I’m still at the chainsaw stage. Any advise? I feel overwhelmed. There’s not enough hours in a day. People waste all of your time. I cant be everywhere doing everything all the time… and we got like 2 feet of snow

It just takes time. I’m 23 years in. 9 shops. 25k/yr it seems on shop equipment, tools, improvements. For a long time the money keeps going back into it. For shop equipment stay out of the retailers; look for old three phase monster machines, they are cheap and a converter costs very little. Made to run a lifetime without hassle or much adjustment. Old shops go under every day, the best you can do for them is to give their machines and material another go at a living. You just need to be able to move and deal with heavy stuff, and can’t spend a lot of time thinking about it.
You need to find a niche you excel at and not be afraid to ask for the money. At the end of the day for most of us, our economic reality is very different from those who come looking for what we can offer.
It’s a long road but a really nice ride if you can figure out something you like doing and has a demand.
      Good luck, friend.

    Great subject, wonderful questions.
Interviewers, sadly, were flat and lifeless; they sounded bored.
