- Kid Icarus: Uprising is a fast-paced fantasy third-person shooter video game developed by Project Sora and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS.
With development led by Masahiro Sakurai, Kid Icarus: Uprising was designed with the intent to make full use of the Nintendo 3DS's capabilities, but on release was met with criticism from problems related to the game's controls to issues with multiplayer implementation.
In today's video, we take a look back at Kid Icarus Uprising and what went wrong with this game.

Kid Icarus was goated if you accepted that Carpal Tunnel was in your near future
Like concussions in football
if you get carpal tunnel is because you were holding the damn thing wrong.

I mean, sure, Carpal Tunnel is one thing...
I played the game so hard I wore out my L trigger... like, it seldom worked anymore... but hey, I got that 9.0 run with my perfectly built Flintlock Staff.
probably wouldn't take it into multiplayer, though, cause its power level would take a third of the team's health bar in Light Vs Dark
When Pit said "Sorry to keep you waiting!" on the first stage we all knew who he was talking to.
Brought a smile to my face.
This game deserves a sequel and console release.
The closest to this that we got to my knowledge is a Chinese game of Scifi Magic Broom air combat

Game was and still is fire. And Hades is dope af! That difficulty slider too was genius imo.
imo the greatest 3ds game ever made, the fact that it still far exceeds even new switch titles, and the fact that there is still a dedicated online multiplayer community TO THIS DAY (you can literally open the game and find a multiplayer match right now), is a testament to just how amazing this game is.
amazing game, some of nintendo’s best music & story, actually funny characters with believable dialogue, the end credits fake out, the difficulty system, one of the best nintendo games out there.
its only flaw is eliminated if you play on emulator nowadays, but even with my gigantic hands, i still prefer playing on original hardware. cramps are temporary, hades is forever
I felt like this game was definitely ahead of its time. One of the many masterpieces on the 3DS and it's a shame it was received the way it did.
It deserved WORSE than what it got. Awkward controls saddled with a HORRIBLE message built on narcissism and a hatred for nature.
@@baalfgames5318Its controls were the only bad thing about the game. If they have changed it it would be better than it was on 3DS.
@@medecko4394 It's story is indefensible, basically implying that nature should just roll over and die for humanity. I literally wanted to drop a bunch of reset bombs on Pit when he gave that saccharine goody-two-shoes speech towards Viridi.

@@ongfrfr249 So you think that "humans are allowed to kill and wipe out whatever they choose, and that the entire rest of existancs can suck humanity's balls" is a perfectly acceptable moral that is a masterpiece of writing?
This game has probably the most satisfying progression system I've ever seen.
I remember playing tons of MP to unlock better weapons to use in the highest difficulities of SP, which would grant me more weapons which I would later use in MP. Rinse and repeat.
Never ending, but never boring.
(EDIT: Also, I can't get enough of Pit. He's by far my favorite Nintendo character)
Yeah, I feel like more games made today could really learn from this one. Normally I don't even like the gear grind that most weapons tend to have now but this one was an exception since all the weapons were cool to use (also helps that the designs were tops) and, like you said, each mode feeding back into the other one, helped a lot since usually it's one way. Also helps that the checklist provided even more motivation to get the most mileage out of all the weapons since some could only be completed by using a certain type.
Uprising is such a slept on masterpiece! It really felt like Sakurai was just given a good budget, told to go crazy and make whatever he wants and it really shows.
It needs a remaster if only for having a better control scheme though lol.
All these years and I'm just learning the Intensity scale used in Smash's All-Star mode came from this game.
Kid Icarus uprising is one of the best games to ever come from Nintendo. It was like star fox mixed with a Saturday morning cartoon. Shame so many people skipped it. I’d argue it was sakurais greatest game.
It really just came out at a bad time.
The lingering popularity of the DS, the misconceptions about the 3DS and its reliability, being a launch title in a barebones library, being a series that many people wouldn't know about outside of Smash, and the cost of the game that didn't seem like AAA at first compared to other well-known titles like OoT 3D.
@@inplane9970not to mention the controls. I bought it, started getting hand cramps and never touched it again

Slightly off topic but there's something therapeutic about grinding in a video game.

I'll probably get around to playing Kid Icarus Uprising at some point since it's been on my shelf for years now...(Same with SM3DL)
They've confirmed that they want to port it to switch (not that it will be ported to switch).
@@weirdtuberjournalism9757 I mean since they have the splatoon system of aiming it should be (relatively) simple. @@nickel7o740Someone remembers Disgaea!? But yeah, grinding can be like that.
After about a week of playing through horrible hand pain due to the controls, this ended up being my favorite 3DS game by far. Wish there was an easier way to play it nowadays.
Just sit on a bed with your back against something and use your bent knees to hold the weight of the 3DS. I play this game for hours and hours and days just fine.
@@davidaitken8503 really wasn't an option for me back in the day because I would play it at work. I stopped having pain while playing about a week and a half in once I got used to the grip, so it worked itself out in the end. Thanks for the tip, though.
Sakurai wanted to add twin stick with the c stick addon, but since the addon used the ir camera to tell the 3ds inputs and not, be normal, it cost too much CPU
@@davidaitken8503or use a stand that came with the game
You could argue that the stylus provides a level of accuracy required for this game, but if you really want to mess with the controls you can get some pretty interesting results.
I was playing it twin-stick while em*lating it on the steam deck earlier, and I could say its pretty alright.
I also tried playing it with one of those drawing tablets and that was also pretty alright.
Tbh, I found holding up the 3ds with my left hand and right pinky to be the most comfortable way to play.
The word press user "warriorsuprising" has the entry titled "How a remaster could improve things - Part 4: the controls and UI" if you're interested in how they worked with the controls of KIU, and how a Switch remaster could fix the controls. It might help to spread the word about that entry. They have said plenty about the game's Power system in recent years as well.
(And for those wondering, the words "word" and "press" aren't supposed to have a space separating them, and they're both supposed to be capitalized, but TH-cam wants to be TH-cam.)
I say if the controls just do the exact same twin stick style an loses a lot of the satisfaction of pulling off maneuvers
The Switch is larger so pen controls are easier like a drawing tablet

This game is so good. All these years later and it's still my favourite 3DS game. Every aspect of the game is great, even the controls work for me. The stylus gives you a level of accuracy unheard of on consoles which was just perfect for a fast paced shooter like Uprising.
In my opinion this is Masahiro Sakurai's masterpiece.
More worthwhile than Smash Bros tbh, I love both games but if I had to pick one I'd choose Kid Icarus. I wouldn't mind Sakurai retiring from working on Smash if he would work on new creative titles like this more often.

honestly my biggest concern with a port wouldnt be translating the controls but missing out on the character portraits on the bottom. the character art was sooooo good! i dont know how they could do that without being intrusive lol
Uprising’s multiplayer is a masterpiece, so glad it’s still fairly active
Wait it's still online? I thought it was shut down like everything else on the wifi

@@Sayyble That's a common misconception, the online multiplayer still works for 3ds games despite the eShop going down.
do you know where I can find the active multiplayer community?
Where can I find the multiplayer community?
Wonderful wonderful game!
It's the smash of shooters, and opts for the "everything is balanced because everyone is broken" gameplay.
And every aspect of it was done with so much care and thought.
It's hard to recommend due to controls, but as someone that grew up with metroid hunders (DS) it fitted me very well. I think a modern version of the same game would be a hit, especially if they can somehow get local multiplayer and allow players to pick popular loadouts as "rentals" (so save time for the guests).
probably what I like most about the balancing is that it can penalize you if you try to be too OP... and incentivizes you to dial it back a little
yeah, you got a powerful weapon that wrecks Single Player, but if you don't tone it down in Multiplayer, it wouldn't be hard to expect everyone to go after you because your weapon eats the biggest chunk out of the team's HP in Light VS Dark (and your OP weapon is GONE from the round if they make you the angel)
Kid Icarus Uprising is probably the closest thing to a perfect 3DS game I've played. Genuinely a contender for my pick for best game of all time.
Console limitations were the only thing I can point to as a downside and even those were manageable with enough time learning and the acceptance of inevitable Carpal Tunnel.
This combination of video game essay and surprise e-sports analysis was amazing. One of the best videos I've seen on this channel
First Sakurai and now Akshon Esports. Uprising is getting so much attention and love right now and that's amazing. One of the games that impacted me the most growing up.
Multiplayer in this game was probably some of the most fun I ever had in a game. I just love how fast and frantic the whole thing was, especially when you got in those lobbies near midnight where you get all the japanese players on. It's pretty crazy just how good the mode is too since I don't think anyone would've batted an eye if it was just a cheap throwaway mode when the single player is as good as it is.
It should also be noted that this game was very hard to play for some left-handed players. There was a lefty mode, where you use the abxy buttons to move with your right hand, but movement was not as precise as if you were using a circle pad.
Even with the control struggles, this is still one of the favorite games, period.
Man i loved this game. Played it so much i went through 2 3ds (well KI:R and the MonHun games). The multiplayer was addictive. The free for all was just that, pure fun and chaos.
And Light vs Dark had a surprising amount of depth. The health that was taken from the team bar is based of off the dieing players weapon power. The stronger the weapon, the more team health lost.
And the multiplayer is where all the weapons and types really got to shine. Every weapon played different, and had different strengths and properties.
Always hoped to hear that there was some group out there keeping the game alive like the N1GP did for mmbn.
Game deserves a HD port and a sequel.
the creator has said he won´t make sequel but i agree

Amazing timing! You dropped this video literally the day after Sakurai dropped a second video about Uprising on his channel!
Just finished replaying the game. No literally, just before watching this.
I played it when i was like 9 or so - turns out i put 100 hours into it, which was a lot for me back then. I was right to do so. The writing is hilariously simple yet layered, breaks the fourth wall in the best way possible - the characters are presented seamlessly and you fall in love with them immediately. The first mission opening with "Sorry to keep you waiting!" is sheer art, and speaking of, the 2d art is really well done.
The story itself, while not being perfect, is very intelligent and is aware of its own elements, introducing things in the beginning and bringing them back around to the end.
The music? Bro. They were cooking up some FIRE in that studio. 🔥
This game goes so hard.
With some 3DS games being ported to the switch like Luigis mansion, im hanging on to a thin thread of hope that Kid Icarus gets ported. Its the one 3DS game i spent roughly 200 almost 300 hours on it because i always took it with me on roadtrips
Only a day after sakurais video, good timing
My favorite 3DS game and dare I say one of the greatest games ever made. Lovable characters, an engaging story that could be as easy or hard as you wanted, incredible soundtrack, and that Sakurai magic that makes its gameplay immaculate. The best online experience in any Nintendo game by far, a weapon fusion system I’ve been begging to be included in modern looter shooters for a decade, Dark Pit, the positives just go on. The only bad thing I can say about the game is the controls, and even then I never personally had a problem with them. It being on 3DS was perfect since I always had mine with me in high school and grinded for better Magnus clubs and needle palms. Once again you guys have amazing taste in games you cover. Keep up the great work.
I really hope we can see a return of this game on the Switch, a bunch of franchises have been coming back. I know the possibility for the game to be ported or to get a sequel is extremely unlikely if not impossible, but I still have hope I am going to see this series again.
Good news is there's an indie game called Owlboy, it's pacifically based on the original Kid Icarus.
I need the sequel immediately!!!
Considering games from the ds/3ds being ported to modern console like Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, it now seems more plosable than ever to be able to port games like Kid Icarus Uprising.
I think given enough time, I think that most major or demanded games on the ds/3ds will eventually be ported or remastered on switch.
Amazing Video, I loved the new editing style
I reaaaaaally wish for a new Kid Icarus game, but I'd take a Uprising port at any day
Great ass game. I started watching chuggaaconroy play through it and I immediately went to go play it myself. The story telling is amazing and the voice acting is actually not cringe
The fact they never made a sequel or remaster for the switch or even just release on the wii u like smash 4 is MIND BLOWING it could’ve worked soooo well after having uprising as such a unique game with a lot more depth and content than you’d expect. Although the way they used both screens of the 3ds was really smart.
Uprising is a game that i, along with many others, REALLY wanted to see again in newer consoles with a better control scheme. And i wanna see palu again….
This game is so good, if it would come out on the Switch people would go crazy online saying how great it is
The multiplayer is so much more in depth than it seems, glad you took time to talk about it
Kid Icarus has a perfect score in so many aspects such as Story, Multiplayer, and Weapon Progression. Masterpiece may be understating it
Omg a full video about one of my (if not the) favourite DS games ever 😍
This video is also a masterpiece by itself, it shows the effort and how informed you are, and even without giving too much spoiler of the incredible story and feelings that this game generates thanks to the fact that you even put the soundtrack in the video, it managed to impress me a lot , almost to tears hahaha, thank you very much! (traslated from spanish)
It's is by far my favourite game on the 3ds and one of my favourite games of all time. Literally the only bad things about it are the fact that it is on the 3ds. None of the gameplay is bad in any way, even the difficulty gate on the weird moon stage that is hard as balls to get to I still consider fair and enjoyable. Let's all hope for a new game in the series as good as this one or even a port to the switch :)
I played this game as a kid. I didn't even know what kid icarus or who pit was at the time, I just thought the cover was pretty and asked my dad for it. Wasn't expecting this masterpiece and I'm glad it's exactly how I remembered it.
Kid Icarus Uprising was the best 3DS game. It fully utilized everything the console had, even having the 3D be useful since distance is an important factor in a shooter which lead to me trying it and kinda liking it for the rail shooter segments. The best part about the game, the conversations, would infuriate me on any other console. On a single screen, you would either have disembodied voices constantly nattering or cardboard cut outs plastering over the gameplay.
My favorite game of all time right here. Please, Lord let an HD port be real
Uprising was my childhood game, I still remember getting siked out by the game when you kill medusa and you think its over, and then hades pulls up, and the eggplant wizards turning you into a walking eggplant, and the music was a blessing to the soul 😭😭😭😭
This game should seriously get a sequel or atleast a remake
I can only imagine Hades saying "Well, where ELSE were we supposed to go?? The WiiU? HAH! That thing was DEAD already at that point. I should know that, because well, y'know..."
Subspecies, Bro WTF!? 0:19
We are upgraded yo.
Sakurai just posted a video about the making of this game on his channel recently; good timing!
This game was the reason i bought a 3ds. I put in so many hours. Really wish we could have a sequel soon
I play KIU every now and then and always love how self aware they are with
Love that you put blue monday as the intro song :'3
Uprising was everything Star Fox Assault wanted to be, and if it been a Wii/WiiU game instead of a 3DS game, we'd have seen another.
Those controls werent enough to keep me from playing back then, but now?......oh god it hurts
Great video. I like your Style!
Myself and many others during the time of release would have competitive clan tournaments, though our ruling grew nuanced over time. Once the team health bar ran out and Pit/Dark Pit spawned, that game would be over. A few weapon+ability combinations eventually got banned too, though the main one was Eyetrack Orbitars + Energy Charge + Slipshot. It was too powerful on too many of the maps, and without the ability to select maps/counterpick, games became too much dependent on which map was selected with a combo like this. There was a lot of super interesting team synergies and plays you could do though, I hope for nothing more than a sequel or even a remaster with more developed features.
The PvP online multiplayer was sooo sick!
"I've never learned how to read " still gets me everytime.
10/10 game, I had smaller hands so I could wield my 3ds comfortably and this game was just amazing. I got pandora claws with petrification (turns you into stone) and used those online and had so much fun.
Yooo claw Mains roll out!
While I never played the game, my friends did and they absolutely loved it. I remember they brought their 3DS to school one time, and I wanted to play it.
There was one detail though: I'm left handed. It was almost impossible for me to play it with the default control scheme, since I use the stylus with the left hand, but the movement and any other important buttons are in the left side. I tried it with the stylus in my right hand but I couldn't play it properly and didn't have fun lol
I do want to get a new 3DS (or that one with the right stick) to give it a proper shot sometime.
Loved the meme-laced documentary style! Keep up the good work!!
Didn't know this was an esports title!
EDIT: i wrote this comment sarcastically, didn't expect the twist 12:25

Main reason why I wanted and got a 3ds other than Pokemon X and Y. I got the world edition and still play it to this day on occasion. Especially now that the 3ds shop has been discontinued, who knows when 3ds wifi support will end.
This and Metroid prime hunters are games that had cool multiplayer but are locked to old portables 😢
This is like one of those obscure games but not so obscure games that basically nobody played but everyone who did, loves it deeply. That multiplayer went crazy hard.
Pit: gee, it's so cool to be back, am I right Lady Palutena?
Bayonetta: and I took that personally
The timing of which this video was released, was amazing. It was released a day after sakurai's Video was released
This was the first game I ever truly tried 100%-ing because it was so fun. Sakurai and the development team truly cracked the code for this game, keeps me coming back over and over again.
Finally this game is being brought into light again! Thank you!
I used to play the hell out of this game, and would love to see it on the Switch or something. See how the controls could be reworked, and if something else were to be changed, maybe give people more control over weapon fusion so they could pick what would be passed to the new weapon.
love this game so much, really hoping they make one for the switch / switch 2 in the near future, complete with multiplayer 😌
so, we just gonna ignore that this was a massive commercial success in Japan? Okay then
The fact that this game hasn't been remade yet is proof that life is unfair.
Sadly Uprising really does feel like one of those games that would be hard to bring over and translate into a home console release, they really did develop it with the 3DS specs in mind, but didn’t have the foresight that eventually the 3DS wouldn’t last forever. Plus even Sakurai said it would be very expensive to bring over to Switch and he needs the right team for the job, same thing has befallen Banjo & Kazooie Grant Kirkhope said there needs to be a right team for another Banjo game too.
Kid Icarus would play really* well in other consoles, but saying that it was cursed by the 3DS is weird considering the fact that this game only* exists because of it.
Uprising is a 3DS game first and a Kid Icarus game second.
That style of menu was also in Kirby Air Ride but Brawl needs some love apparently
I'm astonished this hasn't gotten a sequel yet, easily on of the best 3ds games of all time
Growing up with this game was such a blast, my brother and I would battle all the time and had a heated rivalry, me with my +run speed and dash attack raptor claws and him with his ungodly high damage stats on his halo club.
I was racing around like sonic the goddamn hedgehog and hitting people with brutal drive-byes or slamming them with a melee combo. Claws already had the fastest base run speed, and raptor claws were I believe the second fastest among claws, so combine that with a hefty speed modifier and even lightweight, and you could cross the map in literal seconds. Plus, my favorite thing to do was melee dash attack people and knock them off the stage for an instant KO. 😂 It was so satisfying!
For my brother, on the other hand, the halo club is a is unusual among clubs in that it had pretty quick charge speed, and it’s dash charge shot had crazy range, super fast projectile speed, and strong homing. It was supposed to be balanced by the fact that it had low damage for a club, but what happens when you get one with nearly maxed out damage stars? You get a weapon that can and will snipe you from across the map in the blink of an eye and delete half your health bar in a single hit! It felt like getting hit by a truck, and here’s a casual reminder that it had HOMING.
Needless to say, I became VERY good at dodging. ;)
I like the video, I honestly clicked onto this video expecting some snark making a really surface level video essay, and just wanted to look at the comments to see what they had to say. Instead I found a funny guy making a interesting video about something I didn’t know anything about, and nice comments also. You should get more views I think, and I might have been subscribed already but I forgot if I did just now or before at some point
I came here after watching sakurai video about it and it gives me joy to see more people are talking about how phenomenal the game is and Everything about this video is on point.

How coincidental that this came out the day after Sakurai talked about the development of this game on his channel.
Kid Icarus Uprising is one of the games i decided to try out during the time i had access to GameFly i didn't go into detail of the game but i did play through the main story and i loved it maybe to some the game play might have been a problem but i didn't mind it the story was great and so were the characters and i cannot believe how amazing the graphics were i really hope there are more Kid Icarus games in the future preferably on a home console i didn't look to see if it was in the game but if Kid Icarus Uprising had the option to switch it to Japanese audio that would make it better
the pvp had so many competitive potential =/
Thank you for making this video.
KIU needs more recognition and love.
Thank you for talking about my favourite game on the 3ds and allowing me to relive my childhood
Easily one of my top 5 games of all time.
Eyetrack Orbitars with + homing and + range.
Those who know, know.
I played precisely one match of the PVP and yes it was super fun and yes my hand totally hurt.
Loved the dialogue and irreverence in the story. Super fun.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the music. It has some of the best OSTs I've heard in a videogame
Kid Icarus was one of my first competitive games I've ever played, and I was fairly decent typically opting to try and figure out what weapons I was good at, but also to figure out what weapons got what if I ever became pit of dark out to see if I could destroy the enemy angel, my blessings were a combo of healing and damage output, while I never one any comps, I made it pretty high up in tournaments
The only downside to Sakurai making the game is he tends to really not like making sequels... glad to hear he at least wants it to be ported to Switch/a newer console though! An HD remake with a second analog stick would be LEGENDARY!
Playing Icarus PVP on launch bustled strong even a year post-launch. What's overlooked is weapon power crafting as risk-reward in Light vs. Dark. A casual hops in with a simple weapon dying not hurting team much as a hardcore getting smoked costing their team more than a third.
The game encourages crafting as your skill improves tackling up to 9.0, you open new weapons designated for grinding, budget, and PVP or straight up busted to grow and love. Hated staves, saw Lancer Staff made with +3 Homing, +6 Forward Charge among modifiers. My one-way ticket annihilating Black Club +3 Homing Charge shot Spammers at opposite ends the arena (and normal games). Or Upperdash Arm +6 Melee-Dash attack. Point black 400+ or finisher if it whiffs at 271.
Crescent Palm my beloved grinding and casual with +3 Heart Bonus up to 22k longer lvs. Less OP, but stand ground firing and if a pickle or hard foe to hit, back-dash charge an in-place crescent to escape and double as a finisher. Thank you so much bring Icarus up
I will always dream about a Kid Icarus PC port. I just NEED to see the sweats experiencing this game's crazy pvp.
Great vid, but I actually didn't like the control explanation at 13:47 that much... Still, keep it up!
