yeah it's sad though there are a few other sim competitors being developed Namely, AlterLife & Para lives might take a bit for them to come out, but they're games to keep your eyes out for But the dream of a competitor is not yet dead
I remember last year everyone in the sims community was like ‘I can’t wait to dump you and start with life by you and paralives.’ Yet here we are half way through 2024 and the sims is the only game in town still. 😂 the imaginary Canadian girlfriend is always perfect 🎉
I feel scammed for my mom, my mom doesn't have many joys in life, but she loves sims, and she was SO exited about life by you.. and every time they post poned the game my mom was so sad and it makes me so angry that they fuck with people like my mom, if they're that bad at making a game why did they even announce it in the first place, clearly planning is not part of their game development strategy... They made my mom sad, she is old and probably won't live until the next life sim that will excite her as much as this game did. I feel real hatred towards the developers of this game.
Oh no. I know quite a few people in the sims community who will be disappointed by this news. Myself included as some one immersed in both paradox games and in the sims.
I played the demo for Millenia when it was available. The problem for me was the game had no soul. There was nothing that made France different from England from Germany. It felt like a 20 dollar game; NOT a 40 dollar one.
What is disappointing to me is that Paradox seems to work backwards. They release teasers and trailers without being confident in their final product and having a 100% solid plan. At the end of the day, hype doesn’t ultimately sell video games. Although I’m so disappointed, I’m glad they have decided to pull the plug on this instead of releasing it and disappointing customers.
Vicky 3 early numbers are very comparable to HoI 4 early numbers and I hope it can have similar fate - HoI 4 got great with the DLCs, Vicky 3 has the same good basis and just lacks content and mechanics to make it great.. I do hope they get it there
I was really hoping for this game to do good but there were so many missteps in the development from the start, guess im back to waiting for new ck3 dlc
I have to disagree about Vicky 3 and Millenia. Vicky 3 is a great game that needs a combat rework and WW1 dlc to put it over the top. I agree with you on Millenia that it just needs a good system and I don't care about the graphics. Unfortunately it has neither. The ages system has a lot of potential but I couldn't force myself to play it more than the 20 hours I already have because it is a barebones version of Civ 2. It's not even in the same conversation as Civ 3 nonetheless Civ 6. That said, it's good that they cancelled Life By You. There really isn't room for competition in the Sims market. Everyone who loves that game won't be switching over and there isn't enough of us grand strategy fans to support a game like that. I think you are bang on with your Cities Skylines analysis. They tried to be EA and cut all the content out of that game to sell it to us later and it has backfired spectacularly. I'm sure that was their plan with this Sims clone and now they realize their player base isn't interested in that.
I pre-ordered Life By You twice, watched the development for two years. I don't look forward to games, but I was looking forward to this. I'm so f*cking disappoited.
A lot of Simmers did ask for it tho, they wanted an open world alternative to the Sims 4 that was modern. And because City Skylines pretty much washed away Sim City, there was a great hope Paradox could do it again with a ‘The Sims’ competitor. But it was clear from honestly the first delay this game wasn’t gonna be that great so not shocked it was cancelled.
You forgot about Stellaris, it's getting similar numbers to CK3 everyday, last peak 35K in 2024, but since they broke leaders system a couple of updates ago, many players left the game then; they're trying to make up for that now. Millennia had a bad to mixed reviews on TH-cam and in gaming press, so that's why players aren't there. Among other recent releases there is Age of Wonders 4 (May 2023): it had a peak at 42K concurrent players, but now it's getting ca. 2K players every day only. It has very positive reviews, and it's a very good game, but not a priority for PDX who are not promoting this game enough, so it's dying, and they might stop supporting it soon. Overall, I would say the problems are: games and DLCs are simply not good enough (common sentiment among players), and there is not enough promotion of these games, especially on Twitch. Twitch viewer numbers directly translate into sales (this is the source of the unexpected success of Baldur's Gate 3, for example). Sorry to say, while, e.g., there are lots of TH-camrs streaming or uploading videos with CK3 (including you), that doesn't help, if they're not present on Twitch. Similarly with other PDX games with exception to HoI4 perhaps: viewer numbers for PDX games on Twitch are abysmal, same for a number of streamers. TH-cam discoverability is extremely poor, it's very hard to find content, especially live content, and feed is famously bad, so TH-cam is not as good for promoting games. Additional thing is a modding community. CK3 is alive mostly because of fantastic mods, if not for them, the game would be dead too (despite the game is fantastic imho). A somewhat similar situation is with Stellaris, which also has a very strong modding community, and is alive partially because of that. PDX knows that, still there is not enough cooperation between them and modders, imho.
man first time hearing about this game but if it something like ck3 dynasty system I would really love it (that system is one of the reasons why I played the game anyways) sucks that it was cancelled
I would be very very sad if they stopped supporting V3, it is such a unique game in this genre and you can't get its gameplay anywhere else despite all the jank
Really nice video! Honestly, I am starting to agree with your view on Victoria 3. It is a real shame. The first year of development that was really rough and mostly playing catch up. They are only now focusing on innovative new stuff, but even then, I do not see the fanbase coming in with a massive amount of excitement. Hopefully the next expansion does reinvigorate Victoria 3, especially on TH-cam and live streams. I can definitely see Victoria 3 abandoning the season pass model if things go poorly. I have heard some people hypothesize that Victoria 3 just has a smaller team, but if the new expansion pass does not really reinvigorate interest in the more hardcore fans and the modders, I do not see a positive future. Especially with EU5 having so much hype and already implementing many of the features that Victoria fans wanted, like cabinets and foreign investments ,we might just see Victoria 3 continue for a bit, to avoid the backlash PDX experienced after Imperator, and then be cannibalized by EU5.
I actually think it's going to be Inzoi. Not many people have heard about it since it's from a South Korean dev, but it has waaay more content and some TH-camrs have already talked about their experience playing the closed Beta and it already looks impressive and the devs are already ironing out the bugs and taking feedback. Paralives is going to be a long shot because while it looks amazing they don't have the same kind of budget and resources like a bigger studio.
@@momob4276 I'm interested in Inzoi too. The idea that the big fluffy cat is god and you're one of his interns is a hilarious bit of story around the game. If they lean into that angle then I think it will be great fun!
@@momob4276Inzoi seems more RPG aligned (as in you make yourself an avatar and live that Avatar’s experience). I haven’t seen any evidence of character swapping in InZoi and playing whole towns, which means it won’t appeal to rotational players. And the cities are basically scanned and built from AI scans so they seem to be locked set peices besides ‘your house’. While some Alpha Simmers will be in heaven with the character graphics and people who like the CAS system will be into it. Sims has a lot if world builders to who just want to knock things down and rebuild them. They don’t just want to decorate houses and replace bilboards with youtube videos, they want to knock down a whole city block and rebuild it to their vision and THEN play in it. InZoi has nothing for builders really. Paralives has way more hope in that arena.
@@momob4276InZoi doesn’t have enough building mechanics for builders and no space for rotational players as it’s a ‘make one character and follow their journey’ format best I can tell. That’s a significant chunk of simmers that just won’t be intrested in InZoi and there’s another chunk without a computer powerful enough for InZoi and/or who play on Console.
Here is my hottake on Victoria 3. They made it dumbed down so they could sell it on console as well. But a game cannot be done well on consoles and instead of making thing for their base their went chasing filthy console peasants and ended up apealing to no one. I waited a decade for that game and it was just a huge disappointment.
I want to say that i am not surprised life by you was cancelled, basically the development staff for life by you that paradox assembled was not only questionable, if you look into the graphics, it was rough and character models did not do any favors either when people found out the character models and graphics were very similar to Gym Simulator 24, let this be a warning when people want a game to challenge the Sims, execution, graphics and the people developing the game matter. Yeah probably to be fair
As a Sims fan this one hurts. This genre of games needs some good competition for it to improve.

The rare game cancellation, which is the appropriate course of action when a game is not prepared for release, is something I admire.
I like how they admitted their mistakes too
