The difference between RAID ans GIGN is pretty simple : GIGN are gendarmerie (military), RAID are police. In fact, gendarmie is able to act in and out of France as military forces. In France, police is acting in cityes, and gendarmerie is more used in countryside. They use to have the same skills, but GIGN is more famous and knew to be better. Both are doing great anti terrorist job those days. Specialy during the few past attacks you can see in the vidéo. Maybe the most active police unit in the world this 10 last year...
@@Assassunn It really depends and it’s up to the central commanding group to decide. For example in 2016 there was an attack in Saint Etienne du Rouvray (Normandy, rural area) and the unit dispatched there was the BRI which is a police unit. Because they were closer (as they came from Rouen) than the GIGN
It's really nice to see an American being respectful , not diminishing other countries armed forces and not making very disrespectful surrender jokes. Thank you very much, I hope that your channel will grow a lot.
True. At least people who have a been in the army themselves are able to understand the level of skill of other forces without being totally stupid and off putting. The fact is the french army is awesome although many try to denigrate it.
Hey! French viewer here. Since the Gendarmerie and the National Police are 2 different police forces, each has its own counter-terrorism unit, the GIGN and the GIPN; the RAID is part of the National Police and basically fulfills these missions. There's also the BRI, another tactical unit, but this one is originally an anti-gang brigade. But even if all the groups tend to have slightly different missions, they all fulfilled their anti-terrorism mission during the Paris attacks of 2015, as the different clips show. And yes, the RAID is divided into several "groupes d'intervention", intervention teams, that are based in major french cities in the mainland and in overseas territories.
other french viewer, there is quite a bit of competition between these forces, especially due to jurisdiction, so some of the terrorists were basically waiting while the different french forces bickered about who would fuck them up. I'm exaggerating, but it's funnier this way.
Utmost respect to your countrymen for not backing down to terror (like huge respect for flight 8969),regards from a Canadian. Also could you guys please get Quebec to calm down,we just want to get along, and they'd definitely listen to France. (Seriously though,Quebecers give french a bad name).
@@captaincanuck4576 I've studied in quebec, and yes, it's almost weird how they glorify our culture, when on our side of the ocean, people tend to make fun of their accent and that's about it. (gotta say tho, stereotypes don't really lie, never in france would someone hold the door for you unless you were on their heels)
The RAID also rescues hostages. One famous example is in 1993 when a man took a kindergarten class (3-4 years old, I think around 20 children with their teacher) as hostages near Paris. He still had 6 little girls and the teacher as hostages when the RAID stormed the classroom 2 days after the beginning. The man was killed and all hostages saved.
As a french, there is a very famous GIGN situation in 1994 at the Airport of Marignane where terrorists hijacked an Air France plane and took hostages. The GIGN finally took an assault on the plane ! Thierry Prugnaud was the first GIGN to enter the plane, he took multiple bullets and grenade sharpnel and still survived (ballistic face shield is useful apparently) ! You can see footage online by looking for it or in french « prise d’otage de Marignane 1994 GIGN ». It is really impressive ! A movie was made about this event called « L’Assaut » .
France have 2 police systems, the "Police nationale" and the "Gendarmerie nationale". They do the same jobs (from traffic tickets to riot control) , but they depend of two different ministries and each one have his own "territory". The "Police nationale" is a civilian organisation, under the authority of the "Ministère de l'intérieur" (homeland ministry), the "Gendarmerie nationale" is a part of the army under the authority of he "ministère des armées" (armies ministry). The GIGN is the SWAT team of the "Gendarmerie nationale" and the RAID is the equivalent for the "Police nationale". The RAID have 450 men, the GIGN 390. None of them do riot control...
The footage from the Hyper kocher store is from an actual CT operation. As for the relation of RAID to the GIGN, they're equivalents. The RAID is the top National Police CT unit. The GIGN is the top National Gendarmery CT unit. They both have detachments around France and the GIGN also has detachments in France's overseas territories. Both are reporting directly to the minister of interior affairs and are deployed at his discretion, but the police generally provides law enforcements to urban areas and the gendarmery provides law engircement to rural areas, difficult terrain and critical infrastructure, so normally RAID is deployed in urban setting and GIGN is deployed to retake airplanes, ships, to work in mountain areas etc. and also abroad, because of international law (the Gendarmery is a military force). Law enforcement in Paris is provided by the Police prefecture, which is semi-independent from the National Police. The Prefecture has its own CT, which is called the BRI (I think) and comes close to the RAID and GIGN. When the terror attacks in Paris happened a while ago the authorities were pushed to the limit and all three units were deployed simultaneously in operations at different locations.
RAID and GIGN aren't equivalent. GIGN is the head of the counterterrorism squad stationed at Lorient (ECTLO) which is composed of a majority of the special forces counter terrorism units France has. GIGN also intervenes overseas alongside special forces units in special forces missions and has even taken down terrorist leaders while RAID isn't deployed overseas for this kind of missions (only for surveillance and protection). GIGN also formed and trained the different special forces CTLO units of the French armed forces which is the reason they are put aside nowadays when it comes to hostage rescue overseas even though they used to be the ones who perform them.
@@Cipher_Paul The GIGN is based in Versailles Satory (78) and is not part of the COS but share a lot of training and tactics. For the rest, your good. The RAID is similar to the FBI/DEA/ATF swat team.

Hi ! thank you for this "tribute" It's nice to see respect between the units, being French, it also makes me happy that you talk about our guys, they are very brave. 4:45 to warn you that at this timecode, it was one of the Islamist attacks, that of January 17, 2015, the terrorist rushed towards unity, and they shot him. it seems to me that when they enter in force, there are two shields in front, if the first shield is hit, there is a second one to continue protecting the column, 2 if possible extract the wounded. I believe it is one of their strategy, because they always advance in force. and yes they can be called for any intervention in an urban environment, gang type riots, entrenched madmen, hostage taking, and more recently the terrorist attacks, to avoid moving the GIGN which are military units. the RAID is the elite police intervention unit, your equivalent is the SWAT if I'm not mistaken, badass too;).
ive been a voyeur of this channel for a long time. never posted before. love your videos, as an ex UK infantry Recce Platoon soldier, i always find you very courteous and well spoken. makes such a pleasant change to ignorant and ill educated military videos you see on youtube.
7:40 you are seeing the colonne d'assaut. French like to have many men in a train, with the point man bearing a shield, his wingman covering down the side or above the shield, everybody behind alternating left and right fields of observation in sequence. The carried shields and heavy shielded helmets are good but they also have wheeled shields that can help stop rifle shots, and their shields also typically have cameras and strobes to disorient. Bataclan and other operations, the shields did excellent work. French will breach with the shield covering the entry point from the immediate threat, they will grab flashbangs from the back carriers of the man in front and roll them forward into the rooms, they will strobe people to further dissuade, all that stuff. They do a lot of gear and tactics to not resort to the firearms, and when there is a firefight to have good cover. And the colonne d'assaut means they try to flood the halls and rooms always. Not so much like the parachute men and swimmers who work in the classic trimones and resort to their lethal weapons routinely.
@@CombatArmsChannel Yep they always try to "capture" the bad guy but anyway when they intervene generally its because other mean are no more an option also you did see the part with the dog its the very proof of that this dog are not train to butchered the guy they are train to do martial art to "neutralize" the bad guy xD i think i can loose against one of them in a judo competition
I love your selection of UK tea. PG Tips and Yorkshire. Good lad!!! When I was in KAF, running the Badging Office, the NATO Security Officer (a USAF Captain) used to attend daily at 10 am for a brew. It was a habit he'd picked up during his time at Lakenheath. I also advised him (if that is the right word) re PIRA. Anyway, RAID are top dogs (Research the Gang de Roubaix and youi'll see what I mean) as are the German equivalent GSG 9
The GIGN are the special intervention forces of the gendarmerie, which is a branch of the army, a bit like the National Guard in the United States. The RAID are the police's special intervention forces. Generally the GIGN is present in embassies, remote areas of the metropolis like islands and rural areas, as would be the rangers. 🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵
RAID does fill the role of resolving prison riots and do some embassy security with GIGN. Their role exists beyond tactical though and is very much a political role of keeping too much capacity in the hands of the military(there is whole rabbit hole, of skullduggery black ops between far-right, Left and goverment groups in France the last 50 years). they were brought about because there was no national tactical unit that answered to civilian authority (GIGN is gendarme thus military) and to remove the influence and methodology of former fascist collaborators who had led anti-terrorism tasks force in france prior. Living in France for some time in the early they weren't deployed much in my area and the reason I think is a lot of the reason they go in with numbers and Heavy equipment, it wasn't like district 9 or similar pop culture views on gangs but the capacity to mobilize and deploy by a lot of non-state groups existed, heavy duty Firearms were easy to acquire from former Yugoslavia and many buildings are old with one entrance one central stair that any door or hall can access. Police tended to use plain clothes to grab people, a full raid on a HLM would be a nightmare.
@@CircleWilliams Not there isn't really a Federal government aspect that's kinda a US only thing and doesnt translate well when looking at the security apparatus(there is even a old french show where the FBI behaves like a gendarme cause the concept of Federal police is so alien). there were prior national units outside the gendarme(military branch in charge of policing civilians) but they were all Provincial. GIGN does counter terror as well as RaiD . Think of it as Spec Ops for two different groups both covering the same field
not the RAID takes care of hostage taking and lots of other chause but the riot is the CRS and for the prisons it is the ERIS a unit of intervention in the middle of the carriages.
To answer one of your questions, French RAID counts around 180 members in its central unit (located in Paris), including 120 operators in 6 combat groups : paratroopers, divers, negotiators, dog warfare, intrusion and infiltration, technical support. The RAID recently merged with GIPN (National Police Intervention Groups) in mainland France and overseas, so it now gets to 450 agents overall.
Regarding the "different units" question you had, they actually have different groups inside the RAID. Per exemple the Omega group (which we saw one or two times in the video) which is a THP (Tireur Haute Precision, basically Designated Marksmen) specialized group. They also had a group specialized in embassy protection in foreign countries (saw a bunch of those guys in Astan back in the days) but I don't know if this group still exists
This special unit just celebrated his 35th of service a few days ago and they just passed on the tv, a documentary about them. It was very interesting for sure and their founder was a very known officer in the police in the 80's even for the criminals. He's still alive and for sure you don't expect at all it's him. It looks like someone very chill, calm, relax. I mean not someone you expect to be in that kind of unit you know. Thanks for us dude. Much love
They don't do any riot control, the visors you see on their helmets are actually ballistic which is why they're so thick. The ballistic visors have saved many many many of them during interventions. These guys pretty have balls of steel and are regularly required to get into situations where they WILL get shot, so the visors are extremely important
Hi from france, recently a french pro fighter went to one part of the test to enter the raid, he saw the fighting part You can see his video at "karaté Bushido raid gregmma"
the raid is basically a unis to prevent therorism and weapon market stuff. A lot of the footage there were from counter therorism operations to free ostages while the paris therorist attacks of 2015.
7:56 it is a column to approach target location covered by the vehicle like a mechanized squad covered by an apc/ifv , typically a situation when you have to rush a house in campaign
the raid does not make an entire riot mission but before the raid he had the same helmet as the swat well then they switched to armored helmet with bullet glass but for them there is a unit in France called the crs but inon here it is just a presition
Hi, great vid! May I just complete some of the info The RAID unit is the Police Nationale special force (not military) and get called for counter terrorism in cities whereas the GIGN is the Gendarmerie (on soil military) special force, and intervene in more rural areas. Next, the RAID doesn’t do any riot work, that’s for another unit we have called CRS. Now those vids you saw in that supermarket were from one of the few linked IS terrorist attacks in Paris back in 2015. An IS member took many hostages in a Jewish supermarket. As you see him run out, he doesn’t get tased as you thought but got shot dead on the spot. That event was linked with the attacks we had on the stade de France, shootouts on café terraces and the press building killing which all happened with just days or very few weeks of difference.
The operation taking place in front of the supermarket "Hypercacher" was a real terrorist attack orchestrated by A.Coulibaly. The Raid was attacking the entry but Coulibaly shot at them before running to them and to his death. The Raid freed multiple hostages the day.
historicly the GIGN is part of Gendarmerie which is a military police controling countryside and French RAID POLICE are part of classic police related to a civil minister.
Gendarmerie is sort of rangers mixed with military police. They are former soldiers but are included in french equivalence of department or Homeland security, the ministère de l'intérieur.
La France. My dream is to become part of the RAID. They are specialised in counter-terrorism, bodyguard duty, locking up dangerous or armed people, prisoner transfers.
Hi from France Nico , first of all you have to be french ( or double nationality ) to become a policeman .. After that of course à clean criminal record and an high school level ... And even with that you have to succeed your entrance exam to be part of it.. It's easier to succeed as a légionnaire ( no nationality and school level request ) .. Good Luck and i wish you to become a french policeman ..
Magnifique vidéo ! Vive la gendarmerie, vive la police et surtout vive les forces spéciales françaises... In English : Wonderful video! Long live the gendarmerie, long live the police and above all long live the French special forces ...
RAID is also called for hostage, even if our specialized unit is the GIGN (kinda military police special intervention group). They made their name on a huge hijacked plane retaked without any civilian casualty.
It’s not a riot helmet with that thick visor, it’s a bulletproof visor. Sometimes works in civilian outfits just to blend in in certain ops. The personal security detail, blackwater style is protection detail whenever there’s a VVIP from the gvt visiting a location with high threat. Recherche (Research) Assistance (Assisting) Intervention (Intervention?) Dissuasion (Deterrence).
At 6:30 : in fact, they do a lot of hostage rescue. That's one of their top mission. France has a tradition in rescuing hostages with doing the less damages possible. Even if the guys you saw in this video are some of the top "shooters" (don't know if that's the correct word) in France (and maybe in the world), they almost never fire when they are on an intervention. For hostage rescue, for example, they spend huuuuuuge amount of timing studying the building, mapping all the situation to the centimeter and mainly negociating with the opponent. Their biggest strengh (besides being amazing an amazing task force) is their ability to go on an operation without doing any collateral damage. Very few are wounded every year and they wound / kill a very little amount of people with (almost) never collateral damage.
But they NEVER do riot control. That's the job of "regular" police here. They only go on highly risky situations, manly in urban fields (hostage rescue and terrorism).
RAID is like GIGN (not regarding quality which must be compared by other means) but coming from two different corpses: Police for Raid and french army for GIGN... For police matters, jurisdictions are divided in Police for cities and Gendarmerie (army) for the countryside and small towns. Police and Gendarmerie have been recently unified under the same command for efficiency but remain located on these jurisdictions. GIGN, attached to the french army, is thus attached to the presidency of the republic and can be commissioned for transverse operations.
Little info : the gign is the specialised group of intervention with the highest rate of winning in their missions in the world, they also have more death their training than on their operations
for image: The hostage-taking of the Hyper Cacher store at Porte de Vincennes in Paris was an Islamist and anti-Semitic terrorist attack, perpetrated on January 9, 2015.

Hello! GIGN and RAID are 2 different units! These are special forces of the gendarmerie and the police respectively (police in town, gendarmerie elsewhere). These 2 units therefore intervene on French soil to arrest major bandits, armed individuals or during a terrorist attack. These units are specially trained for this kind of very dangerous operations and are equipped as you can see. in the video we see in particular the joint intervention of the 2 units for the first time in France to arrest the terrorist who had taken customers hostage (video of the hypercacher where we see the iron curtain going up) but also the ambassador protection (when they are no longer in black clothes with only the bulletproof vest).
Good morning. In France, the RAID like the GIGN or the BRI are elite units specialized in anti-terrorism, hostage taking or the fight against organized crime. In passage 4:02 of the video, the individual is not "tased" but shot at point blank range, because this is a terrorist action in 2015 in a hyper kosher in Paris. At 3:45 of the video, we can see the body of a customer lying at the entrance to the store.
3:50 Hi, I want to clarify something interesting. The guy from the raid who passes from left to right, in front of his teammate who shoots, moved to avoid being shot next to the hostages
As many said RAID is the equivalent of GIGN but they are a unit in French Police. They don't do crowd control, just like GIGN they're called for hostage situation and counter terrorism.
3:23 the face shield is not for riot control. It's bullet proof (at least against hand gun). Same thing for the padding on the shoulders. They even have a full balistic suit for the lead man in a column (who would also have a shield). Contrary to military unit, their focus is not to kill the enemy but to arrest dangerous people. So they have to be able to take fire...
The RAID is actually also focused on rescuing hostages, and just like the GIGN, are the last resort against terrorist attacks. The RAID (Police) takes care of Urban operations (with the other FIPNs), whereas the GIGN operates mainly in the country side, but also abroad in foreign countries.. . Anyways both units try to use negociators to solve things as safely as possible
RAID doesn't do riot control (except in prisons) This heavy equipment is what they can use in hostage rescue or home raiding situations if a heavy fire power is expected... When you saw the big formation of opetators behind an armored vehicle, they were about to raid some terrorists in a building. There are a lot of them with heavy equipment because they always try to get the guys alive, so they might take some round before getting to them hence they have very heavy armor
Hello there ! Fist thing to know, RAID wears 77 pounds of stuff on them, without shield. They trains A LOT in different situation and trains there body too, to be abble to wear this gear without suffer. At 3:47 and 10:42 it was a terrorist attack. I forgot when that happened but you can learn all about this with "hyper cacher Paris" search. The terrorist you saw on the clip has been killed, and not stunned. I think it's a little bit shocking to see it in a montage, but hey... He killed many persons during his attack so... RAID exists to counter terrorist assault, or armed threats. It could be Daesh as it could be a drunk man holding his wife in hostage. I think that RAID got many offices in France, I said 'think" because we got also GIGN, that is a special force from French army. GIGN can raid on special conditions, under water, large hostile territory, infiltration (if it's not english I would say sneaky way). I don't know who go on field, sometimes it's RAID, othertimes it's GIGN, there stuffs are similar, but RAID is a special Police force, and GIGN a special army force. A sentence who come's back pretty often is : "Hard training, easy mission". We can be proud of them, they are the bests, "la crème de la crème" as we say here ^^ We got only these people to keep danger away, they're risking there lives everyday for us, to keep us in peace, and we can greeting them for all they do... Thank you for all you've said ✌️🇨🇵
Hey! Just for you to know that RAID and GIGN does not do riot control. The units in charge of this are CRS (police) and Gendarmerie Mobile (gendarmerie). RAID is specialized in counter terrorism in French territories. GIGN is a military force that can be deployed in foreign countries. Nice video thanks for this video.

Hi, i heard your admiration for the g36. it's funny that the german military gets this rifle abolished because it is supposedly not good ... at the same time it is part of many special forces worldwide! during a raid, the police can choose their favorite rifle according to the use. I liked the G3 better, but the G36 is also a very good rifle, but unfortunately unsuitable in the hands of the German soldiers ;-) If I had chosen French instead of German, the RAID would have been my goal - like that unfortunately it was only the bad german military for a short time! Take care and stay healthy

RAID is the equivalence of SWAT. They are exclusively police officers mostly for the major city like Paris. GIGN are the military police (mostly for countryside intervention)
Hi ! I'm french so i can help you to understand some things in the video. The ceremony at the End is the 14th july march in the Champs Elysées in Paris with others countries military corps ans with ALL french army corps : Regular corps like "marines", Navy, The foreigner legion, french "police army" (i will explain just After) In France we have the National Police AND an other corp called Gendarmerie. The Gendarmerie depend to the army and the Police depend to the "Interior Minister. In the Gendarmerie, there is the GIGN corps (you probably know this name) - to resume it's the 'Military RAID". In the Police, there is the GIPN corp (it's the "police SWAT" acting in drug dealer arrest for example) AND the Raid corp (for more complex situations like hostages, assault against terrorists or escort important people). The RAID in France is like the SWAT In USA but with others Police's missions when there is troubles. They escort our gouvernment politicitians in France during some risky situations too. The GIGN can operate in others countries because it's the army but the GIPN and the RAID can't because it's the French Police I Hope i help you to understand our Police/Army units.
Raid is basically the police elite. It's a national force that operate in a lot of operations. They are not always doing conter-terror missions because the GIGN and GIPN military forces are more focused on this. The RAID operates on hard operation, basically when they have to break into something. That's not the only thing of course... Also, a fun fact about RAID is that they are forbidden to show their fave during operations, so they always have masks to hide it. Also, they have to hide to everybody that they are from the RAID, sometimes even their own family don't know that.
GIGN = Groupement d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale (Intervention unit of the Gendarmerie Nationale -> like policemans but in military) RAID = Recherche Assistance Intervention Dissuasion (Search, assistance, intervention, dissuasion -> policemans from Police Nationale)
the sequences at 3:48 and 10:45 were taken during the attacks back in 2015 when a terrorist took a whole grocery store in hostage and RAID went in to take him down
To precise: RAID is special T1 unit for police like BRI (BRI is the judiciary elite one). You seems to believe they do lot of riot thing but shield is the speciality of RAID i think its the only unit of the world to use it like them. They have special groups: HAHO, k9, sniper team, breacher, VIP protection (in france and afghanistan), tech team. They can go on riot but they dont used this equipment. GIPN dont exist anymore they are like "Antenne Raid" now its secondary Raid. They go on hostage situation, terrorism or any high risk situation, they can deploy on site in 30min minimum everywhere in france. RAID is also special in close quarter situation they like the boxing spirit they train a lot to grow their martial knowledge to the max thats why they use shield to they are specialise in really close battle. They are lot to say more about them but great unit with really great humble guys in there.

"Human Bomb"
As a french, there is a very famous GIGN situation in 1994 at the Airport of Marignane where terrorists hijacked an Air France plane and took hostages. The GIGN finally took an assault on the plane ! Thierry Prugnaud was the first GIGN to enter the plane, he took multiple bullets and grenade sharpnel and still survived (ballistic face shield is useful apparently) ! You can see footage online by looking for it or in french « prise d’otage de Marignane 1994 GIGN ». It is really impressive ! A movie was made about this event called « L’Assaut » .
4:03 was from the terrorist attacks in Paris a few years ago, hostages were taken in a supermarket so RAID stormed the building.
It was actually a joint intervention of the BRI and the RAID :)
@@Flying-spaghetto It's a fight between BRI and RAID

Ça m'as fais rire aussi je t'avoue 😂 le mec arrive quand même à confondre un bouclier ballistique à un bouclier anti émeutes

Haha interesting concept, very cool
4:50 Luke I am your...FATHER!!!😂🤣😂
So to summarize: RAID is French federal law enforcement counter terror, GIGN is from one of their military branches
3:19 It's not riot gear. It's a ballistic face shield. From the thickness I'd say it's a level IIIa.

Hi, great vid!
May I just complete some of the info
The RAID unit is the Police Nationale special force (not military) and get called for counter terrorism in cities whereas the GIGN is the Gendarmerie (on soil military) special force, and intervene in more rural areas.
Thanks, very good!

They are sick, but as a foreigner, i would recommend the foreign legion.

Face shield is actually ballistic.
It can block pistol munitions.

Anyways both units try to use negociators to solve things as safely as possible
RAID doesn't do riot control (except in prisons)
This heavy equipment is what they can use in hostage rescue or home raiding situations if a heavy fire power is expected...

Hi,
i heard your admiration for the g36. it's funny that the german military gets this rifle abolished because it is supposedly not good ... at the same time it is part of many special forces worldwide! during a raid, the police can choose their favorite rifle according to the use. I liked the G3 better, but the G36 is also a very good rifle, but unfortunately unsuitable in the hands of the German soldiers ;-) If I had chosen French instead of German, the RAID would have been my goal - like that unfortunately it was only the bad german military for a short time!

Hi ! I'm french so i can help you to understand some things in the video.
The ceremony at the End is the 14th july march in the Champs Elysées in Paris with others countries military corps ans with ALL french army corps : Regular corps like "marines", Navy, The foreigner legion, french "police army" (i will explain just After)
In France we have the National Police AND an other corp called Gendarmerie.
The GIGN can operate in others countries because it's the army but the GIPN and the RAID can't because it's the French Police
I Hope i help you to understand our Police/Army units.
Hi, another french viewer. For this intervention, they not used tazer 😉 at 4.30 min
Also, they have to hide to everybody that they are from the RAID, sometimes even their own family don't know that.
le RAID n'est pas l'elite de la police, c'en est une des composantes et une specialité particulière comme il y en a des dizaines.
Bien sur que si que leur famille savent qu’ils font partie du raid
Check out raids in Paris, they had a lot of crap, over the past couple of year’s.

To precise:
RAID is special T1 unit for police like BRI (BRI is the judiciary elite one).
