2 movies have been done about GIGN operations.
The first one called "Le raid" is based on the Marignane airport intervention discussed in the video.
The second is caĺled "L'intervention" and based on the hostage rescue in Djibouti in 1976, it was the first big operation of GIGN, they saved many children and shot down more than 20 opponents.

The three civilians were unfortunately killed BEFORE the GIGN were in position to enter in the dance... Once in France, the GIGN managed to release all the hostages alive and killed all the hijackers... Major Favier continued his career in french Gendarmerie, finished 5 stars General and the big boss of all the french gendarmerie during few years, he is retired from service and has began a new civilian career.

For more context, Algeria refused to let the GIGN help them, that was until the third hostage killed was french, at that point France put immense pressure on Algeria to let them fly to "Paris" as they wanted, which was actually just an excuse to make them land where the GIGN could meet them.

I was 15 at the time, glued on my TV watching the assault, live. Marking event and most of the current GIGN operators were young kids watching that day as well. This unit is one of the 2 or 3 best units in France, and definitely among the very best counter-terrorism units in the world, with a lot of experience. As many other commented before me, all 3 hostages killed were killed before the GIGN was brought into the situation. Also the first operator to get on the plane used a MR73 revolver to take down the first terrorists, not an MP5. I do not have an MR73 yet (soon), but I do have a pre-ban full auto MP5 mostly because of this specific operation. Legend...

Re-posting a comment from the original video here because I think it's a cool trivia: "The second man in the column and first in the aircraft, Thierry Prungnaud, sustained a LOT of enemy fire ( he took 7 bullets in total, one is still today in his shoulder). Putting his well being on the side, he continued his assault on the cockpit until he was incapacitated by a bullet to the face (hitting the visor of his helmet) and a grenade blast. He lived through his injuries but remained partially handicapped and his operational career pretty much ended here.
His courage and combativity were noticed by many counter terrorism units around the world and the Navy seals made him an honorable member of their unit. A really cool picture of the major Prungnaud, in great Gendarmerie uniform with the seals' trident on his chest can be seen on the internet."

I'm a Londoner (UK) so I love your videos of the SAS. In a country that seems to be in decline, the SAS is one of the few British things we can still be proud of as being one of the best in the world.
As someone with interest in Special Forces from around the world, The GIGN is (in my opinion) underrated, They know how to party.
France has always had a bigger risk than most countries of Islamic Terrorism so their Special Forces have trained and developed to keep ahead of the game.

They are in my opinion the pioneers who paved the way for other anti-terrorist units. This is to test the ability to trust your team member and also trust yourself as " shooting on a colleague"

It should also be noted that the Algerian government only relented when Paris threatened to hold them responsible for any French civilian deaths, to cut off their financial support (at the time France heavily supported Algeria's counterinsurgency against the GIA, which the terrorists were part of) and publicly denounce them at the UN Security Council. Anyway, from an international law standpoint, planes and ships count as a territorial extension of their home countries, so the plane was technicaly French soil.

They even have a Ramses which is on wheel and a brand new one to stop ak47 ammunition with more ease (used during bataclan assault for example) but let's not forget that at that time ballistic shield where heavy and not very manœuvrable which in thought environnement not very good. First to enter the plane, Thierry P. killed two terrorists and wounded a third, before being wounded by the fourth. He was not using an HK MP5 but a Manurhin MR-73. Still blow my mind how they manage to sneak a guy disguised as an airport's staff without being Noticed by the terrorist i mean those guys are bulky af it should have been kinda sus o think they did a great job playing the waiting game and grinding those terrorist nerves cause no way they would have let that happen in a normal state.

This story was foreshadowing the terrorist attack of 9/11/2001. It's suspected that the terrorist planned to crash the plane on Paris. We will never know, because all of the terrorists have been killed, but it's a shame that this kind of danger was not considered after this "first warning".

Pilots were on their seats and terrorist where between them and GIGN. No option to escape. The cockpit door was not bullet proof at this time and only 20 in wide….the stairs was too night because during preparation they didn’t thought the plane was loaded with fuel and shocks were more compressed.
It’s funny you say « look retro »….but it was retro, it was 30 years ago.

Why didn't they use more flash and stun grenades when entering the plane? they were met with enemy fire as soon as they stepped in.
9 GIGN man were injured, with 1 of them being badly injured. I hope everyone of them is safe and healthy nowadays.

The reason why Algeria wouldn't let French military on its soil was because Algeria used to be a part of France during 150 years, part of the colonnial empire, and after WW2 all those countries (Indochina/Vietnam, Algeria, and a lot of west Africa countries) would gain their independance, and with some (Indochina and Algeria in particular), it was very complicated. After the independance of Algeria in 1962, relations with France were very complicated to say the least. So it is understandable in that regard that Algeria would not let the french army on its soil.
Thierry Prungnaud is the man who entered the first in the cockpit, killed one of the terrorists and severely wounded a second (who will die from his injuries). But just before being able to shoot a third a terrorist, a fourth one who is hidden behind a corner open fire with his ak though out the wall and hit Thierry 7 times; 3 in one arm, 3 in the chest (partially stopped by its kevlar body armor), and one in the face, which make the protection glass explode and the bullet goes through its chin. He fall on his back, in a state of shock, and will stay there 12 minutes before his mates could rescue him. At one point, one terrorist throws a grenade in the corridor, which lands on Thierry's right, a few centimeters away. He will have just the strength to turn his back to the grenade before it explodes, hurting him more.
He had dozens of grenade shards and bullet fragments lodged all over his body, and will be operated on 19 times, causing one cardiac arrest and several serious infections, even years later.
He suffered severe PTSD and it took 27 years so he could be recognized as a victim of terrorism.
He is still alive; a true hero.

Honestly it's kinda sad that this video has so little views. I'm Canadian, but this operation is one of the western world's major moments against terrorism, and another country showing that nobody is gonna take crap from terror. Every country involved in the war on terror makes me proud,I'm proud of the Canadian caper of the 1980 hostage crisis in Tehran,I'm proud of S.A.S operation Nimrod, operation enduring freedom, you name it.
We won't go gentle into the good night, as long as freedom is on the line
Edit: also if you enjoy do videos on counter terrorism, maybe you could do a video on lidnt (?) Cafe in Australia,it was both a sad,and succesful siege.

A few remarks.
1: The forward stair wasn't the proper height, as an officer who didn't know not all three doors were at the exact same height noticed the difference with the two others and ordered it to be put at the same as the two others.
The only man present was a driver, not an intervention group member, and failed to oppose the officer's order.
2: They threw three flashbangs into the cockpit to basically no effect.
3: the fight would have been over quicker had the meals rack, in effect a metal wall, not prevented any small arms fire from getting to the highjackers in the cockpit.
4: No shields were used as speed and accuracy was fundamental to their success. The GIGN motto was "To save a life at the expense of one's own".
