I was 11 years old in 1967, now at 67 years of age this song has been in my life for 56 years, I never get tired of listening to it, what a legacy, passing away knowing you wrote and performed one of the most often played songs on UK radio. RIP Mr Brooker you've earned your place in music history!
2024: I'll be 67 in September, and I fully remember hearing this song for the 1st time in Detroit, on the Canadian station, CKLW (Windsor, Ontario, right across the river from us).
That Gary Brooker still had this vocal performance in his pocket after ~40 years is, to me at least, stunning. He clearly looked after his voice. He’s silent now, but people will still be hearing his classics for generations. The orchestra & choir definitely adds power here. RIP.

I was first introduced to this when I was a child. My Dad always put it on in the car when we were going on road trips back in the 70s. I beleive this song was based on Geoffrey Chaucers A Millers Tale from his Canterbury Tales. This story tells of a miller who is married to a beautiful lady who decides to leave him for another man, He finds out and can't believe he didn't see it coming, "And although my eyes were open they may just as well have been closed" and when he challenges her about her indiscretion this is when she turns a whiter shade of pale.

He played organ on the 1967 recording & argued that he wrote the distinctive organ melody. He had wanted 50%, but in December of 2006, Justice William Blackburne ruled he was entitled to 40% percent of the copyright rather than the 50% he was seeking, saying that singer Gary Brooker’s input was more substantial. Also, he was not granted royalties for the period before 2005. So much goes on "behind the scenes" in the music & film industry that we're not aware of.
The original (with the beautiful organ solo) came out in 1967. This orchestration takes a masterpiece to a completely new level. The layers; strings, then oboe, then band, then choir and finally the brass near the end, all combine to add to the beauty but never takes away from the vocals. After 100 times, I still get chills and tears. It's that beautiful.
This song was "banned" in all my Playlists from almost 30 years, because remembers me a happy moments with someone passed away. Then I discovered this version, and yes, still makes me cry, but isn't possible not to hear it, it's a masterpiece

It is refreshing to see young people truely enjoying great music. The first time I saw Procol Harum there were three other acts. The Staple Singers, The Cryan' Shames and Rotary Conection with Minnie Riperton. That was in 1968 and it was one hell of a concert. You never see four bands at a concert any more. And you never see such talent at one place, unless it is at a benefit. Thank you.

This was the number 1 slow dance song at our high school dances. All of the local bands who played the dances had to add an organ to their bands to play it. It always takes me back to slow dancing with the music from the organ vibrating the rafters of the gym. It did feel like the ceiling was going to blow away.

This song came out in 1967, when things were really popping in rock, pop, and soul. Sergeant Peppers, Motown, folk rock and The LA sound fusing to form the explosion that was the 70s. Recording technology was also advancing exponentially as the money the boomers spent on music rolled in. This song was in the middle of all of that.

This beautiful song is about a tragic love story. The lyrics are about a man and woman on a ship, in some kind of stage act, they were dancing.... "We skipped the light fandango🕺💃....turned cartwheels across the floor...I was feelin' kinda of sea sick🤢, but the crowd called out for more"... We ordered another drink "but the waiter brought a tray"....."One of 16 Vestal Virgins" (Vestal Virgins or Vestals were priestesses of Vesta, ie: a virgin goddess👸or a beautiful young woman). "I wandered through my playing cards, and would not let her be". He was in love 💗and persistent and most likely was intimate with one of the 16 beautiful young women on the ship. The young women were most likely in a group traveling together) to the coast.... "16 Vestal Virgins that were leaving for the coast"....." Yes, I agree with the drug addiction tone. Remember, this was in 1967, so young people mixed booze and drugs, and many were "experimenting" in many reckless ways, and somewhat suddenly losing a friend or acquaintance to a drug overdose... It did happen. There is also a promo video for the song that includes film clips of the Vietnam War, so it was a time when many painfully young people were being lost to horrible things that turned us all pale when we were made aware of them.
Coming Guys, this is an extremely old song and is worldwide famous. He sings it the same way they sang it in the 60's and 70's amazing his voice hasn't changed. Of course with a full-string orchestra, it's even more beautiful.

I saw PH many times in the 1960's and 70's as a 4 or 5 piece group and, believe it or not, they managed to be just as 'heavy' as they are in this video. Gary Brooker was a great singer and I wonder if he reminded you of Stevie Winwood. Just a thought. Loved your reaction.

This song was on the radio all the time. i can rememver hearing it here in Switzerland until the 90s. Then I stopped listening to radio ;) Maybe that's where you know it from!
This song came out in 1967, when things were really popping in rock, pop, and soul. Sergeant Peppers, Motown, folk rock and The LA sound fusing to form the explosion that was the 70s. Recording technology was also advancing exponentially as the money the boomers spent on music rolled in. This song was in the middle of all of that.
Biggest hit of 1967. No one sure what it's about BUT the reference to Chaucer's medieval Canterbury Tales (the Miller's tale) is about adultery, caught and admitted (when she turns a whiter shade of pale). Whatever is going on, she dumps him.

This was a huge song back in the day. Reminds me so much of going out with my dad in the 60’s looking for spare parts for his car on a Saturday morning 😀 this was also a big hit in the 80’s , a paint retailer made a set of adverts using this tune and it was again back in public eye , what a tune 👍

This beautiful song is about a tragic love story. The lyrics are about a man and woman on a ship, in some kind of stage act, they were dancing.... "We skipped the light fandango🕺💃....turned cartwheels across the floor...I was feelin' kinda of sea sick🤢, but the crowd called out for more"... We ordered another drink "but the waiter brought a tray"....."One of 16 Vestal Virgins" (Vestal Virgins or Vestals were priestesses of Vesta, ie: a virgin goddess👸or a beautiful young woman). "I wandered through my playing cards, and would not let her be". He was in love 💗and persistent and most likely was intimate with one of the 16 beautiful young women on the ship. The young women were most likely in a group traveling together) to the coast.... "16 Vestal Virgins that were leaving for the coast"....." And although my eyes were open they might just as well been closed".....meaning it was plain to see that they could never be together but he was blinded by unobtainable love, passion, and desire...Later on in life, she finds out that he had died (most likely of a broken heart) and never loved another...."And so it was that later as the miller told his tale, that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale".....She finds out her lover had died of a broken heart💔. So now you know why the music is so sad, and melodic, and melancholy, and just beautiful!!!!!.

I don't think it was ever determined what the song is actually about. I always thought it about losing someone to a drug addiction.
It's about loosing a younger lover and that you never told her to stay and how much she meant to you, deeper than that but that's the basics
Yes, I agree with the drug addiction tone. Remember, this was in 1967, so young people mixed booze and drugs, and many were "experimenting" in many reckless ways, and somewhat suddenly losing a friend or acquaintance to a drug overdose... It did happen. There is also a promo video for the song that includes film clips of the Vietnam War, so it was a time when many painfully young people were being lost to horrible things that turned us all pale when we were made aware of them.
Coming Guys, this is an extremely old song and is worldwide famous. He sings it the same way they sang it in the 60's and 70's amazing his voice hasn't changed. Of course with a full-string orchestra, it's even more beautiful.

He had a huge no. 1 hit in the 60s (Let The Heartaches Begin) and ended his days in Canada, but he made a recording in 1980 of Walk Me Out In The Morning Dew - please, please, please react to it, it's magnificent. I saw PH many times in the 1960's and 70's as a 4 or 5 piece group and, believe it or not, they managed to be just as 'heavy' as they are in this video. Gary Brooker was a great singer and I wonder if he reminded you of Stevie Winwood. Just a thought. Loved your reaction.
