There's a concept by David Sirlin that builds off this video that I think more people should be familiar with, called "Play To Win". I know some other creators have covered this in the past, but would you like to see me cover this in more detail? Also, I'll be live a little later today at twitch.tv/ascendantnomad. Come hang out!
With all of the people complaining about Ace, Felwinter's, Stasis, Top Tree Dawnblade, Spectral Blades, etc. you ABSOLUTELY should cover the scrub mentality. Edit: I'm not advocating that people *should* use these things all the time, but rather to learn why they work, their strengths and shortcomings and finding means to work around them and with them. These tools exist and they will be used whether you like it or not. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't learn them in and out. I'm a filthy Bastion/Telesto fan largely because I *CAN* challenge the hyper aggresive ape that runs around with a shotgun but that was after months of playing Mindbenders to get a feel of kill ranges and go-to fight lanes. I encourage everyone to not place abritrary limits on what you play just because you feel like something is "cheap".
I still remembered the time about me complaining a lot regarding stasis. But now? I outplayed them on regular basis. Sometimes, rage could be an excellent motivator
I'm happy to be part of that 1%. I see the bugs, but I know their time will come to pass. I see the patches for things we like, but I continue to have fun regardless. I see the ambition the developers at Bungie have and I'm with them every step along the way, even if some steps are missteps or steps in the wrong direction. I don't complain because I realize none of it is worth complaining about. Just a fraction of a game that I know I can turn off at any time. But fortunately, they've done such a beautiful job with most of what is there (looking at you, raids), that I don't want to turn it off.
I never complain over Destiny, but at the same time I don't live for crucible. I want to get better at it, sure, but I'm not mad that I keep getting hit by stasis, it's funny, that's all. I get hit, laugh, move on. Repeat. And maybe on occasion manage to hit back. I'm not the dangerous guardian though, I play crucible on occasion when I feel like it, I don't live for the battle, but I enjoy it whenever I play because I play by my terms. Not too often, not too little. I might start playing crucible some more, but I dunno. If I do I do, if I don't I don't
Knew a guy a while back that genuinely made me sweat when he was against me. He ran a sweet business, seventh seraph shotty, and a crown splitter... A freaking crown splitter... In trials... we played regular control 1 time, The dude would turn on music and mute his mic, and by the end of the game he would end with 50+ kills and act like it was just another day. Dude just ran around with whatever he thought was fun at the time and decimate every single game, made trials look like a stroll through the park too... Never seen someone get in a flow state before, but this dude looked like he had mastered ultra instinct and forgot to turn it off. Absolutely terrifying to go up against, but man was it amazing to see
Everybody here wants to think they're this guardian but we all know that guardian wouldn't be here commenting on this video trying to tell everybody and brag about it. I know a guy like the guardian described in this video. Always quiet, calculated, and made of stone. We've come back from 0-4 matches on the simple facts that he kept so much cool and never faltered in his enthusiasm and momentum to bring us back. Never toxic or sending messages when he loses. Doesn't throw away our teams momentum on petty grudges with other players because they bagged or emoted on him. I aspire to be like him but this guy is a totally different breed of a player. Like the damn terminator.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I used to be that player, I'm sadly not anymore, I took a break and when I came back to the game something just wasn't the same. But I can tell you regardless of skill anyone can be that player. I've never considered myself good at the game and never will. I dont think anyone should because they can always be better. I was average and with that mentality I have won countless 1v3s in trials against teams far more coordinated than myself. When I look back I can say for certain the first and most important step to playing like that player is to accept that you'll never be the best and sugarcoat nothing. Call yourself out on everything, even when you succeed, find a way to do it better, and never get mad, just be happy about the improvement. The crucible is 3 main things, coms, aim, and positioning. Aim comes with time and practice, the other two are where you find the gold, those are the ones that have no cap for improvement over a short time, it all depends on how much you think and how disciplined you are. So focus on those two, I hope reflection on my basic thinking at the time may help you to improve. I very much wish I could have documented my improvement and play during that time, the improvement was insane and I think it would've helped a lot of people.

I dunno why, but I listened to this while playing D2 and I honestly shed a tear because of how beautifully this was written and it’s actually a great way to boost someone. It doesn’t glorify one person and deem the rest as inferior, it introduces a state of mind people can follow if they wanted and it makes it so anyone can fit this description. I was expecting a video on someone toxic or just really really hood but I got something much better.
You got a standing ovation from me on this one. Seriously, goosebumps dude. Lately I've been analyzing my game play and trying to figure out why I'm so much better at certain times, nearly invincible compared to those times where I'm a scrub and hit negative kd's. I wanted to see if I could replicate it more often. You seriously hit the nail on the head. It's mental fortitude. In those moments, I'm focused and nothing shakes me. Hell, death usually makes me smile. The only real difference is the "fight with honor" part. I can't lose that part. It's what makes crucible fun for me. I understand the handicap it creates, but I have way more fun losing with a blue sidearm than I do winning with a mountain top. Great stuff man. Loving it.
Haha facts. I play somewhat honoring the meta (I like to call my loadouts OFF-meta... Bite of the Fox + Anonymous Autumn during forsaken, for example), but not CHEESING the meta and grinding out every ounce of juice. I just don’t want to be that guy (in quickplay at least 🤓. Give me my Lumina, Swashbuckler Truthteller, & Dawnblade combo for trials and comp).
Personally i never gave a flip whats meta or not...if called meta for mt/luna/truth, so help me god ima use it and on the flip side i love when i counter play with something off meta too..when i was playing alot lol
@@MichaelBrown-kk8wo absolutely. In 6's the longest I ever go with the same load out is around 3 matches, but honestly, I usually switch it up every match unless I'm trying to learn a new weapon or trying out something new.
I think this video is something a lot of players need to watch. So often do I see players get inside their own head, get bogged down, angry, frustrated, and cocky. Too often do I see players make mistakes and not think to look at how they are playing, as opposed to looking at everyone else. There is a lot to be learned from this. I know because I am one of the players who needed to see this.
Never giving up and fighting until the end really reminds me what my tennis coach drills into me. Mental fortitude, which is paramount in games like tennis, are generally forgotten in most sports/esports and its a shame, seeing as its so important. Great video as always.
That moment he lists off everything I either do or am working on getting better at and I just thought hey I’m glad someone thinks I’m doing it the right way
I see a lot of videos on TH-cam. Mostly just recommended videos I’m interested in randomly and then never think about again. And it usually is not followed by a subscription. But this video... hit different. It was worth a subscription. Worth remembering. Truly a great video, cheers mate!
I still come back to this video at the beginning of a play session when I'm getting back into it after time away or when I'm getting frustrated with myself. It really helps me refocus and enjoy the game again. Thank you.
I’ve just recently found your channel and may I say, you are the most pleasing and wisest D2 TH-camr I’ve ever come across. Thank you for all you guides!
I’ve been watching TH-cam for years now and this is the first time I’ve ever felt the need to comment on a video simply to say, “Thanks”. Basically every point you made hit home with me and I’ll be taking a really long look at my mental attitude during pvp now as a result!
Damn bro I was watching this like I was in school . This video was amazing ... he just has that kind of voice that makes you feel bad for doing bad things ...
Holy shit man that black screen with the "that guardian is you." hit me in the feels and for some reason gave me a look into the future in which I was dominating tourney after tourney. This piece of content seriously juked tf outta my brain in the best and most unexpected way possible that kept me watching the whole time. Also, you were wrong about the complaining part because not a single human can resist getting mad at a shatter dive.
Thank you for your videos. I'm finding the more I listen to them, the more I'm applying them to life than I'm applying then to gaming. The most dangerous guardian could easily be the most dangerous person at work. I strive to be better in gaming and life and you give inspiration for both. You are both the crucible and the life doctor. Thank you for what you do! Keep it up!
I absolutely adored this video and quite inspired me I won't lie. It's pointed out a lot of things I do and now I am more focused on changing it. Thanks Nomad
I used to play about a 1,6 KAD in the last sandbox, now I am about 2,2 constantly, not at least cause of your insights. And I 100% agree: never stop getting better. There is always something to improve upon. You just gave me an excellent rundown of where to get better now - I added the personal level to that list. Thank you. Keep up the great work!
this made me think of the time i really wanted to be good at apex legends. i spent hours watching the top players, even went so far as to make a mental note of when they made a mistake. wrote it down and kept a list. i would make sure that when i wasn’t working i was getting good sleep, eating right, and staying hydrated. I worked out to clear my head. i kept a list of dos and donts. i played every game with the sole purpose of honing a specific skill. I warmed up. i practiced with full intensity. I kept a healthy lifestyle with work and leisure. I cleared my head. went from what was a 1 kd player in destiny and a 1.5 kd player in apex to a 2 kd in destiny and a 3 kd in apex. I don’t have time for this anymore but i had it in the bag. I played with some of the best players in the world. They kept me around simply for this mindset, and when i needed to do something i did it. I still had off days, but this was a rarer occurrence. it all stemmed from one of the top pathfinder players telling me, “You’re really good, but the most inconsistent player i’ve ever played with.” Consistency is key.
Thank you Nomad! This really struck with me as there has been many occasions where i would refuse to use say Revoker because i thought it lacked skill and got stomped by someone who didnt hold their pride. This is something i will utilise a lot. Thanks!
I know I'm two years too late, but I really enjoy watching your video about this. I started playing D2 back in March, and entered my first pvp matches in the first Iron Banner of this year. Much to my brother's surprise and that of myself, I fell in love with Crucible (he never thought I would be head over heels for it. He hates pvp haha). I am on Crucible matches weekly and I thrive on them. Of course, I have learned from many mistake I did during pvp, and have tested myself out. Now watching this video I can see that I'm o the right path to becoming a better player because I love the game. Thank you very much, Crucible Doctor! :)
Any one else notice he sounds like shaxx?? He has a voice that reminds me of when shaxx tells you to get up and try again when you lose. And he uses a variety of words.
Well damn bro! Opened this up expecting a bit of a montage, hyping up & then swap to an interview with a friend, one of those high tier players & just rip in them for a bit after the whole hyping up stage. Then you continued, carried on explaining through things & I was waiting on the "And That Guardian Is You" line & it was still awesome when you said it. This was a pretty badass video, definitely resonated with me. Currently I'm dealing with a lot, Physical Health Issues/Disabilities, 4 month old son, the wife & I decided it would be genius to move the week between Xmas & New Years lol. My mental health condition is a bit of a different beast though, I love PVP in Destiny but I haven't played seriously since probably Trials of the Nine & even then it would only be with a set few players i felt comfortable with. I've taken time away & I'm itching to get back into, I hover over quickplay, freelance comp, my loadout ready, everything set up both in game & around me, then I back out. I'm gunna be without Internet for a couple weeks when I move, time completely away from Destiny. I hope in that time I can find the clarity needed to just hop into Quickplay a few matches per day & build from there. Wasn't expecting this video & wasn't expecting it to be so helpful! So, thank you for taking the time to make it & share with us. This has been a help to me.
these points really resonated with me cause I do believe I am like this, but recently I've been getting demolished in trials. This video renewed my confidence. It's not about the reward, not about the flawless. It's about being burned to a crisp in the heat of the battle!
MATE, i love this. this is the shit that keeps me going, and periodically attaining this level of zen - and even less often, skill. (*remembers deadly, little, miho.)
You did a great job with this vid. As a D1 into D2 veteran, all I like to do is have fun, whether it's raids, strikes, quests and campaigns, or the competitive worlds that are either The Crucible or Gambit. In PvP, I do have both my pros and cons: Pros - I like to have fun, using ALMOST any loadout. I never relied on Meta, just what works well with me. There are players that I respect, and whatever bad comments I get, I just ignore. Cons: Sweaty and Meta playstyles the enemies use annoy me, T-Baggers and some Hatemail(from the opponent or the teammate) I like to have fun, but at the same time learn from my mistakes whether I win or lose. It all about playing the game my way.
Honestly this was super inspiring because no matter what happens in crucible or gambit I’m still going to pull off that once in a game moment that makes the win or loss worth it, and I still get my pinnacle or powerful after a few games even if I choke at the last second I might get blasted away by your shatterdive but I’ll be right back carrying a slug with your name on it around an unsuspecting corner
It's like when you're in the zone isn't it. When you don't look at the score and are so focused on the battle and radar that nothing else matters. It happens with everyone occasionally, and that's when you flow the best. Thanks for this video Nomad, I'm sure we can all learn to apply this anywhere else too, besides the game itself.
Very interesting video, I’ll definitely be trying to become more and more like the guardian you’ve described, also you’ve earned my subscription with this vid.
Thank you! This feels like a timeless video, where it's always going to be true. And a good lesson to take home as well. I'd love to see a video on 'Play to Win'. 🤘👍
I appreciate you making this. I try to embody these as much as I can Respect for enemy tactics Enjoying difficult engagements Experimenting with every weapon I can And it does not matter what game you, or I, are playing. I attempt to apply this to all games
I just want to thank you Ascendant Nomad for this video inspiration it made me realize what i could do to push myself and make myself a more positive and powerful player in destiny yoy made me realize i shouldn't fear my enemy they should fear me this video help me feel a whole new perspective of the game like i have never before thank you have a Merry Christmas and keep up the amazing work.
Looking back, I've slowly figured out a lot of this through my time playing Destiny. I only started this spring, granted, but I think I had a decent start. It just never really occured to me how important some of these details can be, I never really got to a point where I focused on this. I just lived in the moment, always looking for the next clip, trying to do better. It just wasn't the right play. And this is about the time I found you, (and then Patty through you). You made me realize where I was truly lacking and I started to subconsciously include your advice in my own games, it's been very slow adjusting and I'm still nowhere near at a level I'd be happy with. You've taught me the correct way to improvement and in my own weird wording that would be "think less to know (or alternatively observe) more". This "slogan" of mine is like a beginner level to improving your game. Thinking about useless things like getting killed by an ability you can't do anything about is just taking away from your ability to observe and take in the information the game provides to you, come up with ways to better prepare for the next time it could happen. All in all, I'm truly just thankful for you and your videos, I absolutely love your content and your passion to help others. You've taught me so much about gaming, PVP and having the correct mindset that I just can't thank you enough for it. Once again, thank you for all you've done for me and the community and I anticipate what comes next, always looking forward to it. Sincerely, a thankful guardian
5:24 - 5:36 ,,This guardian has no limits, and doesn't handicap themselves in the name of pride, honor or skill. Those are meaningless platitudes in the arena that sabotage more than they succeed" What a **GOD DAMN BEAUTIFUL** quote. Finally, a voice of reason.
I'm watching and learning, and, like I tell my kids, keep going, never, ever stop until the end, gotta keep trying because, I've seen comebacks from both sides and, it's exhilarating getting into a 1v1 against a player that uses your play style and can beat ya, then you grow from those failures with practice and, mostly, have FUN.
I just want to say thank you for this video. Today was not my day in trials or even in quick play. I was playing for 5 hours straight with only a total of 6 wins. I wanted to give up... And I did... I got off and asked myself if all my hard work was even worth it? Thank you for bringing me back down to earth.
I feel like I tick all the boxes about being unfazed by whatever happens to me and keeping my cool even if the world's on fire, but as a player who is still a Lighthouse virgin, I feel like i have a looooooong way to go before becoming what you'd call "the best I'll ever be". But as you said, I will do it with a smile on my face regardless how many times i get killed, bagged on, have hate mail sent for using thorn, necrotic grip, and stasis together, you name it. Keep up with the good work, and I'll see you in the Crucible!
Thank you. Manly for saying something along the lines of “Don’t complain when your favorite gun gets nerfed, don’t complain when you lose, because any time you spend complaining could be put into improving yourself in the game.” This really meant a lot to me, Ive been a decent player for a while with a average 3.5 kd. In the crucible. But I’ve always felt this pressure to complain about all the bad things in D2. So thank you
This is the kind of player I am in different games and actively trying to become in Destiny. I gotta show this to some of my friends. Many of them get super emotional about pvp and I feel like they need to see someone who, unlike me, has the skill to back up statements like these. It's something I try to say but never know how to express, that the only thing you can do is to keep going and have fun.
My man just described Shaxx almost perfectly because even he have something that bugs his mind. One example is he really don't want to see the kids he played with at the streets of the last city growing up to pick a gun.

@@MichaelBrown-kk8wo all about that fun factor. I'm glad I can understand that looks different for different people.
@@ShutchyerLips indeed gotta change it up sometimes ya know...get boring using the same stuff over and over again
@@MichaelBrown-kk8wo absolutely. In 6's the longest I ever go with the same load out is around 3 matches, but honestly, I usually switch it up every match unless I'm trying to learn a new weapon or trying out something new.
This is if “I didn’t hear no bell” was a person
"cause mickey loves yah"
Love that part.
That moment he lists off everything I either do or am working on getting better at and I just thought hey I’m glad someone thinks I’m doing it the right way
Probably the most calming relaxing voice I’ve ever heard. I can’t stop watching more videos just for it.
I see a lot of videos on TH-cam. Mostly just recommended videos I’m interested in randomly and then never think about again. And it usually is not followed by a subscription. But this video... hit different. It was worth a subscription. Worth remembering. Truly a great video, cheers mate!
This video is going into my favorites so after every match good or bad I will listen to this to keep me pushing forward.
It's me! He said so in the video! I'm also 2006 Time Magazine Person of the Year.
Hey what a coincidence me too
I’ve been watching TH-cam for years now and this is the first time I’ve ever felt the need to comment on a video simply to say, “Thanks”. Basically every point you made hit home with me and I’ll be taking a really long look at my mental attitude during pvp now as a result!
Nice video! Caught onto the concept of "the guardian" before it was explained, really cool!
Damn bro I was watching this like I was in school . This video was amazing ... he just has that kind of voice that makes you feel bad for doing bad things ...
"This guardian never complains." This guardian does not exist.
This is by far my favorite destiny video I’ve ever watched. Sooo much obviousness but truth in this. Mad respect man.
This sounds like the Perfect player in any FPS. Hopefully one day I could become something like that, it might take awhile but I'll try.
Well, it’s something we all hopefully strive to be.
Got to say I love the mystery and the way you went about describing everything. This video is absolute gold! Thank you @Ascendant Nomad!!
From the start i thought this was going to be about BakkenGangsta
@HVanderzD were made men by the bakkengangsta, made undone by the bakkengangsta, we die by the bakkengangsta. Fear the old bakkengangsta
I didn't know where you were going but it is the smartest video I've seen to date, seriously. Damn this is smart great job.
Really nice take on what we all strive to be as guardians and just as people in general. Very inspirational
Thx Nomad. This is exactly what I needed to hear as my confidence is shot atm. Loving the videos. Keep up the good work
Thank you for making me cry from happiness, thanks for the pep talk my dude. You have my like and subscription
this made me think of the time i really wanted to be good at apex legends. i spent hours watching the top players, even went so far as to make a mental note of when they made a mistake. wrote it down and kept a list. i would make sure that when i wasn’t working i was getting good sleep, eating right, and staying hydrated.
Thank you for this wonderful clip. It was very inspiring both for my gameplay and my personal life.
Yo this video was amazing. It put a smile on my face the whole way through. Each and every bit was just me. Brother your dope
This was amazing , thank you for taking time and making it .
Bro this was super motivating to me. Been in a recent slump with trials and the like and this video lit the fire for crucible and comp plays again.
Dude I've been playing comp and because of your tips my game has improved massively.
He also uses quotes and poetic sentences
Great new vibe man, I dig it!
This is very inspirational thanks, I needed it, and thanks to Fp6390. I'm gonna show this to my friends.
Wow. Such a different kind of D2 pvp video. Loved it. Earned a sub.
Ngl, I saw how this video was gonna end before I watched it. But I love your voice and end track, so I watched to the end anyways. Good vid man. 👌
This was a great video and has opened my eyes to things I didn’t think I needed to see! I believe it’ll help me to become a better player
Dude I kinda got where this was going like half way through but it still got me hyped as hell when you said “this guardian is you”
Well damn bro!
With quality videos like these, it won't be long before he's well above 100k subs, then 300k subs. Great video on the psychology of multiplayer!
I feel that you told my story, I feel motivated.
MATE, i love this. this is the shit that keeps me going, and periodically attaining this level of zen - and even less often, skill.
(*remembers deadly, little, miho.)
This was so beautifully worded it made me cry, thank you
You did a great job with this vid. As a D1 into D2 veteran, all I like to do is have fun, whether it's raids, strikes, quests and campaigns, or the competitive worlds that are either The Crucible or Gambit.
In PvP, I do have both my pros and cons:
Pros - I like to have fun, using ALMOST any loadout. I never relied on Meta, just what works well with me. There are players that I respect, and whatever bad comments I get, I just ignore.
Cons: Sweaty and Meta playstyles the enemies use annoy me, T-Baggers and some Hatemail(from the opponent or the teammate)
I like to have fun, but at the same time learn from my mistakes whether I win or lose. It all about playing the game my way.
Honestly this was super inspiring because no matter what happens in crucible or gambit I’m still going to pull off that once in a game moment that makes the win or loss worth it, and I still get my pinnacle or powerful after a few games even if I choke at the last second
I might get blasted away by your shatterdive but I’ll be right back carrying a slug with your name on it around an unsuspecting corner
Very interesting video, I’ll definitely be trying to become more and more like the guardian you’ve described, also you’ve earned my subscription with this vid.
that was very unexpected and rather wholesome. Thank you
“The existence of Titans” 😂😂
This, genuinely wants me to play crucible now after watching this. I feel motivated. Thank you for this.
Bro your narration gave me goosebumps!!🥶

Me with my sky burners Oath: maybe I am the chosen one
Thank you! This feels like a timeless video, where it's always going to be true. And a good lesson to take home as well.
I'd love to see a video on 'Play to Win'. 🤘👍
I appreciate you making this. I try to embody these as much as I can
Respect for enemy tactics
Enjoying difficult engagements
Experimenting with every weapon I can
And it does not matter what game you, or I, are playing. I attempt to apply this to all games
I don't think I've ever felt more inspired, after a terrible trials weekend, in my life.
Sincerely, a thankful guardian

,,This guardian has no limits, and doesn't handicap themselves in the name of pride, honor or skill. Those are meaningless platitudes in the arena that sabotage more than they succeed"
What a **GOD DAMN BEAUTIFUL** quote. Finally, a voice of reason.
I was feeling really off i couldn't manage to go Flawless this weekend, now i just feel inspired and anxious to play trials again.
I am that type of gaurdian and I say welcome brother we've been waiting for you
Because I haven't seen it anywhere else, his intro and outro music is Nevada by Vicetone
So thank you
This vod is so good man.
This is me in literally every game I play except this game (mostly cause the only other games I play are Monster Hunter, Dark Souls and PSO2)
I’m a new player and I feel like your talking to me fire video bro love the content
Absolutely loved this. Very inspirational approach, and feels very applicable to life
Thank you Doc
Frost is the GOAT - Facts over feelings like you said, his mindset when playing is what you describe to a tea. Cracked Out
This is the kind of player I am in different games and actively trying to become in Destiny.
Really enjoying the content bro
A wonderful video. Thank you for this gift :-) and I did laugh at the existence of titans. Titans, indeed. Lol
God I love the drama in your delivery
Yo..this almost made me shed a tear. Real talk. Very nice nomad
This was an absolute banger, dude!
