A lot of photographers do weddings as their income whereas their passion is another niche in the photography world that doesn’t bring in $$. Weddings can be a wonderful but it can be a grind. It’s good to see wedding photographs like you who are passionate about wedding photography. I once heard a professional photographer in his web class say wedding photographers aren’t photographers, they are wedding experts with a camera

"This stuff transcends money and success guys, it's life and it's deeply fulfilling work, and anyone who says it's unimportant doesn't understand its power. Honestly, if you're in this business I hope that money doesn't even matter to you at the end of the day. More than anything I hope that you care about serving your clients and their families and giving them the greatest intangible gifts they could ever receive, photographs."
Dude... you're the first person I see give a meaningful and thoughtful talk about this. I see people care about the money, settings, and gear. But at the end of the day is about giving irreplaceable photographs. Hits the feels.

10:34 "...seing the intimacy between family and friends..." this is really exactly what made me pick up photography as a hobby. The thrill of being able to capture a photo that really communicates what happened, and the emotions within is creatively stimulating for me. And somewhere along the way maybe I lost that voice, that eye, so thanks for reminding me of that. Professionally I'm not a photographer (in graphic design) but this made me reevaluate to see what it is that I care about what I'm doing. And that I might pick up a camera when I can!
11:14 "Honestly if you're in this business, I hope that money doesn't even matter to you at the end of the day." This is such a powerful declaration that I really aspire to. I've always seen "success" as a product of process rather than output and positive feedback (because success can be different things to everyone, and if you base what you think of success on what others say about you, then you're not going to feel fulfilled no matter what). And if success means that you're financially stable, then let it be the product of your process and your creativity, rather than the goal you've set. I've chased different levels of "financial stability" and even now I don't feel like I'm at that point (really feeling more conscious now than when I started actually!), and this paradigm shift is something I want to really pin down this year. Hopefully!
Thanks for this _random_ video. YT recommendations worked well!

You're the first person who's ever talked about stuff related to pricing/earnings in video or blog that was willing to detail anything about how many jobs they did with what they make.
For one, so many photographers come across as intentionally vague when they say they are giving advice on pricing. But also, seeing the actual number of weddings that you did puts into perspective the time management that is going to have to come with the desire to raise your income to that level. Breaking it down in your head how many weddings a month that is. Or how many weddings a week. Factoring in planning for a wedding, being able to travel, processing all the photos for viewing and delivery. And everything that goes into getting other wedding jobs and scheduling those.
It's an amount of straightforwardness that isn't seen very much. In any genre of photography.

You can make more money from portraits than from weddings. Weddings are extremely time-consuming diluting your profits. You can make as much in one portrait session that consumes a total of 2 hours, including post-processing than what he makes in one wedding that can consume as much as 60 hours. Weddings are just marketing for portraits session. So you could create over $20k in sales from one wedding, including the wedding and portrait sessions. But I am sorry to tell you that $117K a year in gross sales for a wedding is NOT lucrative at all. Is barely ok.

Dude - this was incredibly motivating and enlightening! I've been filming weddings for 4 years in Australia and am really struggling to break through the pricing and booking barrier that I've been stuck in for the past 1-2 years, as I've recently moved from a big city (Sydney) to a more regional area (Sunshine Coast). Whilst it's still a really popular wedding area, I just can't seem to land a decent amount of bookings and am finding my price point to be an issue. I know my work is good and my editing is Point 7 'Leaning into what makes me different', but it's been a real struggle to push past and get to the point where I could financially leave my job.
I've just become the father to my second boy (congrats on your two btw), so it's really motivating to re-assess everything I'm doing and push past this to not only achieve the working environment I desire, but set an example for my boys. I thank you for this video, and I look forward to following your progress as I make my own.
    Your newest subscriber, Mitch.

In 2017 I shot 40 weddings and made a total of.......$75K. I'm really glad you found a niche and are making a living doing photography. I've been doing photography since 2000 and its been one hell of a ride. I'm in the midst of a career change due to the market and over saturation of the industry. My prices have actually gone down consistently since 2010 to be able to compete; while my cost of living has almost doubled. Done with this career. I'm glad that people are doing good in the industry, but EVERY photographer I know is suffering in the So-Cal market. Not hating, just living in a different market than Chicago must be. Glad you're doing good and gald those who read this comment are doing good. I'm done doing photography as my primary income source.

I kind of understood that then but never really got to put it into words until watching this video. I'm still working on getting my first camera so I can get closer to realizing my truth which is to capture life and preserve moments dearest to people's hearts. I cried watching this. I don’t even know who you are. But it resonated so much with me. I’m a senior in college and i shot my first 9 weddings last year. I agree 100% on everything you said about how to create your own unique style by being inspired by other people and how fulfilling the industry is. I needed this. Thank you Eric.

You know what? When I clicked on this video, I figured it'd be another list of tips. I didn't expect to be moved by your words. I found you genuine and it really touched me when you spoke about the importance of photographs. It was a good reminder for me why I take weddings, over time I had come to forget it. So thank you.

Refreshing to find a photographer/ creative in it to what seems like the joy of the art, where money is secondary, and is transparent with their business, and does not have the con artist/ “get rich quick by signing up for my course “ vibes. Thank you for the knowledge and it is true- this is life. Capturing precious memories and being a service to people that need it is much more valuable than a paycheck, because it will eventually attract the money!

The ONLY problem with weddings is that couples can only get married on one particular day! It sounds simple but if you get a wedding photography enquiry but you are already booked then that’s that...see you later £2000. No chance of ‘oh can we do Sunday instead’ because the couple 90% of the time have already booked their venue. If you live in an all seasons geographical location then you also have to put up with the low winter season. To maximise your profit the best thing to do is move to a location where its dry and warm for 9x months of the year so you have more of an active all year round wedding allocation season. Love your videos Eric :)

Incredible video reminded me why I do what I do. I love shooting weddings, and I don't care if other photographers look down on it and think it's not "art" or whatever - I disagree with those people because I get to make art out of the most important day in my clients' lives. Spot on, Eric! Thanks for inspiring this UK photographer to keep going.

I’m the only person I know that aspires to be a wedding photographer lol.. I love your insight. Can you please make a video on developing a style or coming up with concepts ? I’ve only been shooting for a little over a year. I found photography during the middle of the roughest point in my life and I love it for giving me a passion and giving me something positive in my life ! But.. A huge problem is I feel locked into rules that I learned in the beginning and it’s limited me so much and I’m not having fun going on shoots any more because I feel super locked in and I don’t shoot with intent anymore I’m just going through motions. I care so much about photography and succeeding with it that I’m stuck not progressing anymore. I also worry so much about the people I’m photographing and hoping they are happy it’s actually worked against me because I’m stuck in the boring go through motions mentality that I can’t seem to break out of. Idk what ever your videos are great and I Love love your photos !

I don't know if you will ever find or read this comment, but damn man, this video bought me. For the past couple of weeks, I was in doubt whether to buy a really good PC or a camera. I love programming and some other things i would need good pc for, but i really enjoy taking good pics using my smartphone, and it is specially satisfying when my friends are thankful for taking good pics of them for their social media, or when i take pictures of random details that not everyone sees, it is just satisfying. But after watching this video, I'm 100% sure I am going to buy camera, and hopefully start my career in photography... Wish me luck!

Love you Eric and your humble words. I like to think of myself of a 'servant with a camera' when I'm shooting a wedding. I've done all sorts from putting on jewellery for a bride as all her friends have fake nails, to taking the brides bouquet to the wedding, delivering the rings to the guys, and once I even took the bride to her wedding in my People Mover. It was pretty funny but much appreciated. I also feel it's not about the money but being involved in capturing history. Thankyou for your videos!

Wow! Wow! Wow! The end of this video literally made me cry (i am a guy btw). Seems we both got kinda the same mindset. I "price" my weddings in a really unusual way. Until this very day i shoot every wedding without expecting any loan to get afterwards. I always told my couples to give what is within their budget and what are they willing to pay me as a counterweight. And i never got to little and i am as well not starving. Hope you understand everything. Big hugs from a german subscriber!

I honestly didn’t know photographers made that much. I was to do this as a hobby then business later on because I love the idea of capturing moments that means so much for the person. You literally opened my eyes that much more to get into photography and hope I can talk to you personally and pick your brains.
