Goldring Lenco GL-75 Turntable - Service & Presentation!

There is a charity shop near me that keeps back certain items they can't sell (unsafe, faulty, etc), and this was one such item.
(It should be noted I always donate something - regardless of condition of item).
This turntable looked filthy, but was actually in surprisingly good condition!
Under the dirt, and Leak Delta badge, lurked a very nice Goldring Lenco GL-75 turntable! And a rather good model too; it had a nice plinth, and a very nice lid!
These particular turntables use Idler Drive technology, which has it's pros and cons. The Goldring Lenco range has rather more pros and very few cons...

When I first began watching YT, I came across an video from a fellow who restored an Lenco TT for use as a dedicated high end mono record player. He installed a mono cartridge and was using a restored 50's mono tube amp and one excellent speaker unit. Those Lenco TT's are intriguing to say the least. I've yet to see one in my travels here in Canada but I'd pick one up if I were to find one. It was great to see the innards and the mechanisms!

Hi BN! And thanx. You're spot on, due to their flexibility these turntables have been used on all sorts of different configurations. They're currently going through a resurgence in popularity, and I can see (hear!) why! :-)

Idler drive technology doesn't have as many advocates as belt and direct drive technology, but Goldring Lenco got their implementation spot on.
Shame about the tonearm!

Admire Mr Circuits skills and lack of fear! I would be scared of not being able to screw something back in place or a springy spring, springing off.!

Thanks muchly, but TTs aren't that difficult really. Just take things slowly and carefully and you'll find these are nice things to restore.

I quite liked the GL75. Why anyone would have purchased the Leak version when it cost quite abit more than the Lenco original always puzzled me. The arm is not the best for sure, it's quite massy. I used to sell it with a headshell punched full of holes. This did help remove at least some of the mass. It worked best with a cartridge that would track around the 2.5 gram range. It did not like the Goldring G800/E which was often sold with it. It really did not track well at 1-1.5 grams.
Because of the high electrical field the AC motor throw out, some cartridges would pick up hum as the pickup moved towards the centre. The GRADO FTR is a good example. Any of the Decca range is a no no! Great cartridges but not on the lenco.

Great video. Took your advice and viewed the video by Sparky. Great stuff. I have just bought a GL85 - belt drive. Lovely machine. Needs refurbishment and quite different mechanics with a lighter motor, transformer and an integrated circuit to make metters more perplexing Any tips?.

Hi.. Great video. I have a Goldring Lenco 75 I think. Should I eBay it sold as seen or try to get it serviced? If they sell from between 60 to 120 maybe not worth it. The perspex lid is quote scratched but otherwise good.

Well, it depends on what you want more than anything else. If you don't have any TTs, or want another to add to your collection, these are nice TTs to have.
If you are looking to make money on them, I've seen them go for anything from £40 for a working tatty example, to over £100 for a mint one.
Perspex lids can be helped a bit by using an abrasive plastic polisher. The stuff car shops use to polish plastic headlights is good for this.

Dr Circuit Hi, are you an electrical engineer or is HiFi your hobby? Thanks for your advice. Do you service equipment...? Also if any people reading this fancy owning the same turntable I will pass them my email. My system is a rega 3 through mission Cyrus one amp. The amp I have always liked but scratchy volume and selectors no longer selecting the source so thinking of getting it serviced.

Nope, it's merely a hobby. Having said that I'm looking at various electronics courses (just for fun!).
I'm an IT guy by training/education, and do a variety of other stuff too, none of which I'll bore anyone with.
I did, and will service equipment, but at the moment I'm up to my eyes in that 'variety of stuff' mentioned above so I can't service equipment for the foreseeable future.
Hopefully someone will see this and approach you if they can help!
