I saw her in Boston this year and now she'll always be my favorite Jenna! This recording does NOT do her justice. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. She took the place down with her emotion and was nearly spot on vocally. The whole cast was tbh. 'I didn't plan it' was unbelievable too. I want a studio recording of this cast! lol
This was the night where she filmed her rant after. Someone in the crowd made her anxious because the lights blinded her, and she was nervous to make a mistake and get judged for it.
People always say that she has too much emotion.... people who say that obviously haven’t seen the show. She was ABUSED by her husband and pregnant with his child.... she is the best Jenna to date
I think that this recording is a bad representation of Desi’s talent. I saw her on tour in Milwaukee and it was incredible. I didn’t like her before I saw her as Jenna and I was completely mesmerized. She’s definitely my favorite Jenna. The anger in her voice makes more sense when actually watching her performance. Her acting and singing were some of the best I’ve experienced in live theatre.
i think she brings a lot of Jenna's angry as the movie, Jenna really is upset having the baby all the time and then she accept the baby at the end, in the musical she accepts her because it's a baby, she want to win the pie contest just to bring a new life to herself and a good life the baby at least. Like i always say on debuts like this: she will learn, right now she is doing really well, i think she can control that really soon.
This video does desi absolutely no justice, this had to be a bad night for her because her Jenna is flawless and didn't have so much anger for this song, I saw her in November and she KILLED it.
This may or may not have been a bad night, but I think she was angrier earlier in the tour and softened a bit later. I saw her twice in Cleveland where the tour launched...and she was incredible, but definitely very angry during this song, similar to this recording.
I saw her a few weeks ago and she was so so much better live. I’m saying the same as everyone else here - this doesn’t do her justice at all. I think maybe she was having an off night or was sick or something during this. I listened to this about a month before I went to the show and it made me feel a little skeptical that I would like her in this role, and now, after seeing her, she is my favorite Jenna
I just saw Desi as Jenna in Chicago's Waitress and I'd say it was even better than the original Broadway version which we also saw. This song, of course, was the best moment of the show.
This recording definitely doesn’t reach Desi’s potential. I saw her on the DC tour, and I felt every single emotion in all of her songs ESPECIALLY this one. I was crying in this song along with her. She brings so much emotion to Jenna and she is hands down my FAVORITE Jenna!
It's not simple to say That most days, I don't recognize me That these shoes, and this apron That place, and its patrons Have taken more than I gave them It's not easy to know I'm not anything like I used to be, although it's true I was never attention's sweet center But I still remember that girl She's imperfect, but she tries She is good, but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won't ask for help She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine And it's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person And makes you believe it's all true And now I've got you You're not what I asked for If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over And rewrite an ending or two For that girl that I knew Who was reckless just enough Who gets hurt But who learns how to toughen up when she's bruised And gets used by a man who can't love And then she'll get stuck And be scared of the life that's inside her Getting stronger each day 'Til it finally reminds her To fight just a little To bring back the fire in her eyes That's been gone, but used to be mine Oh, used to be mine She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine
I think she needs to tone down on intensity. Because all this emotion is turning into her sounding like her screaming slightly off-tune in times. The ending is AMAZING, and it proves that she has the pipes and ability to sing consistently on a very high level.
Yeah, I have to agree. I mean, I love her but she sings this with waaay too much broadway ham given the nature of the song. Jessie Mueller does better in my opinion. Sure, she also overdoes it a little, but on the emotion and a lot of physical business - but the song still sorta suffers a little. I mean... I'm all for letting emotion take over the song, a few cracks here and there, a little breathy and unvoiced at the right times ... but too much is too much. However, after hearing Desi's version I'm liking Mueller a lot more ; ) And then there's Ms. Wolfe... Betsy Wolfe sings it just about right at first. Her opening verse is so much closer to Sara's ... but then Betsy goes with some very odd runs and unexpected falsetto breaks that sort of jolt you out of the song... which is a major shame because her tone is just about perfect otherwise. She pulls you in with such a gorgeous warm tone and then, well, just as you're sinking into her voice she bleats or makes a weird run and suddenly you're not thinking about the emotion anymore - and you're consciously on your guard for the next warble or bleat. It actually wouldn't be any more distracting if she just randomly quacked like a duck mid song, but maybe that's just me being oversensitive. But then she loses all dynamism and tone and starts belting it hard like it's an anthem, till every last vestige of emotion is quite thoroughly beaten out of it. Why do broadway aleads lways seem to overplay the soft songs till they lose their meaning : / And it's all SUCH a damned shame. Sara wrote an absolutely beautiful soft, sad, sweet, introspective song and unfortunately it just doesn't quite come across sometimes. I think if you only ever see this once in your life, wait and catch Sara doing it. It'd be worth the wait too - It's probably the best, most heart-rending show tune of recent years when it's done right.
It's a shame, but this song is deceptively hard, a fine line between too much and not enough. In a few weeks Desi should have it down like the others do.
Her emotions is AMAZING, in this song! I agree it sounds pretty low for her but she's getting is pretty good. I think she just needs to balance the emotion so that it doesn't undo her technique.
Hamilton's Tradition it also really doesn't have to sound pretty. Musical theatre is simply a convention in which a character express thoughts that can't be expressed in words. Thoughts aren't inherently beautiful.
She just needs to chill a little. I know this a very emotional scene but she’s letting the emotion take over her voice and it makes her pitchy. A little pitchiness is okay but she just started going all over the place.
Andrew Shearin I've already commented this, but this had to be a bad run, I saw her in November and she didn't have so much intensity and anger as she does in this recording, this gives her no justice.
I sadly didn't get to see this when it was in town and from what I've read this isn't a great recording, but it seems to me that the emotion is there and strong. She honestly seems like she doesn't have much of a lower range and so she pushes way down and holds her voice in her throat which makes her sound flat. Like, honestly, the entire beginning of this song was so out of tune sounding it was kinda cringey. When she is in her middle to upper register it is much better. There is more tone and the pitch is better. She just doesn't have that insane belt that other Jenna's have had toward the end either. She pushes and the tone suffers from it. However it isnt the weakest version of this song I have heard. It was really good, but sub par compared to the other actresses I've heard perform this song.
BritBoyNYCiity this is extreamly rude. desi is an incredible jenna. i saw her live and cried at her performance of "she used to be mine" because of her acting and singing skills. she brings out her emotion onto her voice and makes you feel what jenna is feeling. she's not terrible. this audio of her just wasn't the best.

MissMorgin she sounds really nervous in this, honestly. I can tell she's got good pipes
This was the night where she filmed her rant after. Someone in the crowd made her anxious because the lights blinded her, and she was nervous to make a mistake and get judged for it.
I agree. I saw her in Portland. This song was breathtaking... while I cried.
People always say that she has too much emotion.... people who say that obviously haven’t seen the show. She was ABUSED by her husband and pregnant with his child.... she is the best Jenna to date
This is not the day that she made the rap video. She made the right video in April this was in November
I think that this recording is a bad representation of Desi’s talent. I saw her on tour in Milwaukee and it was incredible. Agreed. This recording doesn't represent her sound. Flawless.
I agree. I saw her in Boston this year and she will always be my favorite Jenna! I want a studio recording of this cast!
i agree, not a good recording
i think she brings a lot of Jenna's angry as the movie, Jenna really is upset having the baby all the time and then she accept the baby at the end, in the musical she accepts her because it's a baby, she want to win the pie contest just to bring a new life to herself and a good life the baby at least.
Like i always say on debuts like this: she will learn, right now she is doing really well, i think she can control that really soon.
I just saw her last night and she sounded nothing like this its crazy. She has changed so much from this.
Saw her live a few days ago and it was INCREDIBLE
This video does desi absolutely no justice, this had to be a bad night for her because her Jenna is flawless and didn't have so much anger for this song, I saw her in November and she KILLED it.

Honestly she is the best jenna‼️😍has the best singing voice it’s soft like butter
Even just hearing this, I can feel each and every emotion. This is a haunting interpretation.
I just saw Desi as Jenna in Chicago's Waitress and I'd say it was even better than the original Broadway version which we also saw. This song, of course, was the best moment of the show.
Arnie Goldman I saw her in Chicago also, and I can definitely agree with you.
I saw her in DC. She was wonderful!
Saw her in New Orleans just recently and she was so incredible. This song is so powerful.
Am I the only one who actually likes this audio? It’s different, but the anger in her voice is really captivating to me.
Just saw this on Saturday. Sooo good 😍
Desi has amazing vocals, but she sounds very angry as opposed to broken.
L Sims That’s actually closer to the movie version of Jenna
She is VERY angry. Have you seen the movie or the musical?
I saw her in Cleveland and she’s fantastic
Zachary Ross I saw her in Denver 2 days ago
i saw her in columbus! she was apparently sick that week but i couldn't tell. she killed it!
does anyone have the full audio of the show that they can email me?
emma I only have act two audio but there alittle bit of background noise if you still want it
Violet Star yeah that’d be great! my email is emiliecrotty15@gmail.com
Saw her twice in LA this audio definetely doesnt do justice to her work !!
Perfect
It's not simple to say
That most days, I don't recognize me
That these shoes, and this apron
That place, and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used to be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
But I still remember that girl
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
And it's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person
And makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
You're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over
And rewrite an ending or two
For that girl that I knew
Who was reckless just enough
Who gets hurt
But who learns how to toughen up when she's bruised
And gets used by a man who can't love
And then she'll get stuck
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Getting stronger each day
'Til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little
To bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
Oh, used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
hoping to get tickets and see her~

she's also acting hurt, and angry, and defeated and all these emotions you can hear in her voice. I also think its reeeeally low for Desi

Andrew Shearin Yeahhhh that was pretty messy lol.
Where Did You Get This
❤️
this video is not the best showing of her talent and there used to be a better one of her on here but it got taken down. Desi is amazing!!!!
Is it just me or is this in the original key before it changed to the lower key on bway?
She just needs to chill a little. I know this a very emotional scene but she’s letting the emotion take over her voice and it makes her pitchy. A little pitchiness is okay but she just started going all over the place.

it's like, i like it, yet at the same time, I don't
Yeah I understand what you mean I saw her live and there was a really good TH-cam video of her singing this but it got deleted
The tempo is too slow
no no no no no
This is terrible....
BritBoyNYCiity she sounds way better live
This recording gives her absolutely no justice, she kills it live
BritBoyNYCiity this is extreamly rude. desi is an incredible jenna. i saw her live and cried at her performance of "she used to be mine" because of her acting and singing skills. she brings out her emotion onto her voice and makes you feel what jenna is feeling. she's not terrible. this audio of her just wasn't the best.
Awful awful awful. A screeching cat would be better.
Guess what fucktard nobody asked for your ass of an opinion
