To ME, she’s my only Jenna. I like Kat and Betsy and all of them, everyone is incredible without a doubt, but Jessie just does something to me. Voice of an angel and she acts the part phenomenally. Seeing her act live is an experience.
From that first note, it has always been Jessie. I try to convince myself that other Jenna's have done it justice (and they have come close), but Jessie just owns this song. Her tone and warmth is just beautiful. It always makes me cry.
Definitely agree that Jessie is special, but I've never felt so alive when Shoshana sang it. It was breathtaking. She got a 3 minute standing ovation after singing it. Truly incredible.
Musical theatre isn’t about getting the best riffs or stuff like that. It’s the emotion that you get from a song and the emotion that the actress or actor puts into their work that makes it what it is and this song does it
and it’s what makes people think “oh why are those theatre kids putting in all that work for one show?” Because of the emotion and connection to it and dedication :)
It's the story too. Talented artists feel extremely lucky to have roles like this with story that resonates to them and to a lot of people. I didn't feel so affected when I first heard this song alone but when I saw the show, God, she's talking and singing to the baby she used to say she didn't want. But the baby becomes her turning point and compass into finding her self worth and know what to prioritize that will pave way to true happiness. This show is just one of the proofs that exist that there's nothing a mother can't do. Their child is their pride and part of their soul.
Are you kidding? The original Jenna is Sara Bareilles, the composer of all the songs!!! NO ONE sings those songs like she does! All one has to do is listen to Sara's "What's Inside" cd. Sara created Jenna!
Whenever I hear Jessie sing this I constantly find myself saying (in my mind) “don’t cry don’t cry DON’T YOU DARE CRY!”...then I cry. Cause, you know, wow. Dayum woman!
I feel like Jessie really embodies Jenna when she sings this song, she really connects with the emotions. Other Jennas have done well, but I really *feel* it with Jessie.
In Jessie's final curtain call Sarah and Jessie Nelson said that in writing the songs they were considering 2 things: 1. If it fits the story 2. If the song gives justice to Jessie's talent (or something like that)
Jessie's portrayal of Jenna perfectly fits the 'she is broken, but won't ask for help; scared of the life that' s inside her', plus her vocals embodied Jenna's story. I think that's why most people can't get over her 'She Used To Be Mine' performances 😊
ramdelossantos Sadly, it wasn’t. It was Katharine McPhee. :( (All the Jennas have been amazing! I’m not trying to say that I didn’t like Katharine as Jenna. [Just wanted to clear that up incase you ‘re wondering.])
Her voice is so rich. So full of tears, so soft, so strong. Allison Luff’s take is marvelous, but Jessehas this astonishing regret, bittersweet. Judith
When I first heard this on Broadway back in 2016 I was moved by the emotions, now almost five years later I am still moved and in awe of her voice. She's a great singer and person!
Now that's how you know it's truly a work of art. I remember first hearing SHUTB back when I was like a sophomore in college and just last weekend I finally saw the musical.
This is master class material on how to pull your audience and have them hanging on your every syllable. The vulnerability just guts me every time I hear it.
jessie will always be my favorite jenna but shoshana is a very close second❤️ jessie just has so much emotion and power in her voices and just brings jenna to life, it’s beautiful. this is my favorite rendition of this song because it’s just so simple, no big riffs, it’s just so perfect!
ok so i’m working on this song with my coach rn and we gotta talk ab how hard holding the “mine” is at the end. the riffs and stuff make it way easier but damn. damn. my voice is about to break everytime. this woman. wow.
My lord - I thought Shoshana Bean was the one and only - But I learn Jessie is the OG … Simply Inspirational - Tonelicious Emotionality. I love that I’m so late in discovering this girl for the first time … I’m actually just a little in love with her.

I have never seen her live. But I agree with you. I loved seeing Kat at London’s dress rehearsal, she was amazing! but Jessie’s Jenna is incredible.
Definitely agree that Jessie is special, but I've never felt so alive when Shoshana sang it. It was breathtaking. She got a 3 minute standing ovation after singing it. Truly incredible.
I felt the same until I saw Shoshanna. They are both incredible.

She really can wrench your heart, it's amazing.

THIS.
It really does!!
I wish it was available to more people. A performance like this has the ability to change lives. ❤

THIS is why she is the ORIGINAL Jenna... her voice always moves me.
she is the best jenna, then shonna, then desi oakley

Y’all joking right - Keri Russell was the OG Jenna from the movie so technically she’s the “original” Jenna

Why am I the opposite? I'm trying to say in my mind to "Please cry! PLEASE CRY!" but end up not crying. I want to cry to sad songs too. 😢
Somebody should ask Sara if she wrote this song specifically for Jessie because wow
I feel like Jessie really embodies Jenna when she sings this song, she really connects with the emotions. Other Jennas have done well, but I really *feel* it with Jessie.
Sara saw the movie and she identified with Jenna. It was the first song she wrote.
In Jessie's final curtain call Sarah and Jessie Nelson said that in writing the songs they were considering 2 things: 1. If it fits the story 2. If the song gives justice to Jessie's talent (or something like that)
I am new to her and i am absolutely floored!!!!!
She kind of did. I mean not literally, but while they were putting the show together, Jessie was already attached and I’m sure they had her in mind
The way she sings the words “Lonely” and “rewrite” get me every time. Wow. Wow. Wow.
And “start over”
She’s so good she gave herself chills.
Damn right
Val Orlandini i cry every night Just to fine and waiting for someone to come
raye xo So is my wife:)
Ugh, Jessie's version makes me so much more emotional than anyone else's.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who whenever they hear this song they just immediately cry???
You’re not alone
No, you're definitely not.
You know who I would love to cover this song? Dolly Parton
Ohhhhh that would be AMAZING
I love the cracks in her voice. It helps her express her emotions so well. 🥺😍
This is amazing. All these new Jenna’s adding in all these riffs are amazing but the way she can move people to tears is something special
Jessie's portrayal of Jenna perfectly fits the 'she is broken, but won't ask for help; scared of the life that' s inside her', plus her vocals embodied Jenna's story. I think that's why most people can't get over her 'She Used To Be Mine' performances 😊
*her voice does this song so well, I like the more country sound to it! and I dont normally care for country* :)
I really hope she closes Waitress on Jan. 2020 😢😭
oh my god same. I am heartbroken it's closing!
my heart is just broken
As much as I would love Jessie, there's something lovely about Sara closing the musical she wrote the music for! Like it's come full cirlce.
Why is it closing. I'm coming to NYC in april and would have loved to see it.
ramdelossantos Sadly, it wasn’t. It was Katharine McPhee. :( (All the Jennas have been amazing! I’m not trying to say that I didn’t like Katharine as Jenna. [Just wanted to clear that up incase you ‘re wondering.])
I love how she added the country sound to it she is so fucking amazing beyond talented
Incomparable, and I’ve listened to just about all of them. Emotionally, interpretatively, a level above everyone, even the great Sara Bareilles.
it's so hard doing school work while watching this... I always stop whatever I'm doing to see her and hear her... She's amazing.
Jessie mueller is just amazing. I could listen to her sing the phonebook
Her voice is so rich. So full of tears, so soft, so strong. Allison Luff’s take is marvelous, but Jessehas this astonishing regret, bittersweet. Judith
How is she so incredibly good at looking tearful without actually crying (thus preserving her ability to make full use of her instrument)

Instant chills when she started singing. I've never heard of this singer before, but I could feel her emotions deeply.
Such emotion and talent. Almost reminds me a little of Alanis morrisette. So beautiful.

I could listen to this 100 times a day. Beautiful!
I hope you meant to add a 1 ahead of it lol
Omg! I meant 100 times per day!
Tamanna Das fixed it, thanks for pointing out!!’ Amazing voice

Wow. I’ve never heard of this artiste but I’m nearly in tears. The best rendition!
One day I will hear Jessie sing live. 🎵❤️🎶

That’s just heavy....and absolutely beautiful.
After seeing Jessie for the first time last week on broadway for The Minutes, this is amazing!
You are fortunate
I hope Jessie goes on again as Jenna before Sara closes Waitress : ((
She is wonderful. Best voice, beautiful to watch. Love, love, love.
This performance is so perfect
Ngl, she won me over as my favorite Jena. I saw Sara Bareilles last week and I adore her but just hearing Jessie's voice wins me over everytime.
Why does this song touched my heart so much and make me cry and miss my late mom. This song is so beautiful 😢😢
she never fails to amaze me.
Her voice is just crystal clear here.
She is such a force of beautiful nature ❤️
Angel angel angel she’s such an angel
She reminds me to Barbra Streisand 😻
From the second she stepped on stage in her Broadway debut I said the same.

spectacular, wonderful. fantastic, So glad I heard this.
Amazing as always ❤❤❤❤
Beautiful.
what a gorgeous raspy voice! aaahahahh
Ugh I love her so much
How to be perfect by being imperfect 101.
She is to this song as Jennifer Holiday is to And I Am Telling You. It's been done by many great singers but the acting is just incomparable.
How did 13 people dislike this? Are they deaf?
A great example where a singer surpasses the composer.
A perfect voice... oh my God!!!!!!!!!
Love it. Simply love it.💓
She is the One! Wow
anyonr having trouble watching this vid? it seems too heavy that it wont load at all? i can watch all vids existing except this one?? weird
The audio is really out of sync for me, which is annoying.
It's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and it's patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used to be
Although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
I still remember that girl
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up
And baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
And it's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person
And makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest I know, I would give it all back
For a chance to start over
And rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
Who'll be reckless just enough
Who'll get hurt but
Who learns how to toughen up when she's bruised
And gets used by a man who can't love
And then she'll get stuck and be scared
Of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day
'Til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little
To bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but it used to be mine
Used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
Masterful. Stunning
For some reason, whenever I would sing along to Sarah B's version I could never get that ending. But after a couple times practicing with Jessie's version I'm able to get those notes down
Love this girl
Masterful.
Wow! Loved this song.... just subscribed....
The SOUUUULL, sweeettieeeeee 👏🏼👏🏼🔥🔥🔥
Hadn't heard of this girl before now but have to say she is doing Sara Bareilles major justice. Great cover 👌👍🌟
She Originated the role of Jenna in waitress, which i'm sure you're aware is the musical that Sarah Bareilles composed this song for
It's not a cover when she originated the part! ;)
Beautiful
Love you Jessie !!!
