Back when I was a London bus mechanic in the early 90s, I was told the engines were marine engines - in other words they had been designed becuase you can have access on all sides when they are in a boat. And therein lay the issue when fixing certain issues on the Routemaster. I was a 23 year old woman and small, so was usually sent in to reach the places other mechanics could not reach - LOL.
That's the Iveco engines that are marine, not sure if the Cummins are also. I read the Ivecos wore out fast in bus service because they were designed to be at constant revs rather than going up and down the rev range.
@@jamesfrench7299Cummins make engines for a vast variety of different uses - automotive, marine, plant, generators - you name it, Cummins probably make an engine for it.
I can remember working on a DAF DB250LF (which was an evolution of the MCW Metrobus) which had been retrofitted with a Cummins iSBe 6.7-litre Euro 5 engine. This conversion used what was basically a bog standard Cummins exhaust silencer, but the rest of the exhaust from the turbo outlet to the tailpipe (which came out under the middle of the rear bumper) was custom work, admittedly made from stainless steel so it was durable and didn't rust. What had happened here was a grounding incident which damaged almost the entire exhaust system. We ended up having a welding company fabricate a replacement exhaust from scratch for us 😮

They were amazingly reliable. For three years, from 1978, I had the pleasure of driving them on three busy routes in Central London. (Including the 38, Pete!) In that time, I only experienced one mechanical failure; and even then the bus was capable of limping back to the garage 'out of service'.
Only last week I had the same issue with my 1999 Nissan safari /patrol Ute, original exhaust gave up and I set about installing a 3 inch upgraded version, was absolutely confident it was a 1 day job, which took 3 days, day 1, 6 hrs to remove the turbo dump pipe nuts only, day 2 , 2 hours to install the reminder of the system, day 3 , overnight hospital stay! due to braking a finger trying to apply enough force on the seized turbo stud and slipping the socket wrench off the remaining nut, then ignoring said finger because I had simply had enough and was not going to be deterred from completing the job!
