Bobby's art is like his skateboarding: stylish and unique. If any of the non-skateboarding audience are interested, Bobby is one of the most stylish and creative skateboarders and, for me, was a key part in defining 'East Coast' street skateboarding.
He’s a true enigma. I chat to him a fair bit on Instagram and he’s got absolutely no reason to give me his time of day. I always grew up hearing he was somewhat of a standoffish guy but he’s clearly not at all.

Wow...this was so fascinating! My first impression was, "this guy is just picking trash up off of the street"....however when I saw his findings displayed in the frames, it all came together. Bobby's findings are records of what our culture/society are using for certain purposes. Like the many Victorian items you find in the Thames or bottle dumps. I enjoyed this so much! And thank you to Bobby for taking the time to show you his collections and gallery, looking forward to his TH-cam channel! Will he let you know when it's up? Then you can let us know too!

Wow! What an awesome interview. At first I thought "why?" But the more I watched, the more I GOT it. It's the collecting passion. 😁 He's simply found his fascination, passion, and dedication and then learnt how to display, explain, and spark that collector's passion in others. How amazingly creative! And this is said by a collector ofcutlery, beads, and broken things I like to turn into plants. 🤣 I have a house stuffed full of them! If you're passionate about an item, its origin, use, and so on you simply HAVE to collect more, then share that spark with others. It's a creative happy place. Wow! How and where (approximately) do you find those? It never occurred to me that seed pods could be found as fossils. I collect fossils as well, from Lake Michigan. I was also thinking that this way of displaying a grid of nine is oddly pleasing to the eye somehow. I think I’ll try it too.
I always flatten out the wrapper from a Tunnock's teacake and years ago I framed one! I also used to pick up any plastic figurines I found. Gave up when I got over one hundred and passed them on to my friends children.

I find his art very interesting, the way the subjects are displayed. Reminiscent of Pop Art but more earthy, more real. I find myself looking at the pieces for a long time, just considering the objects collected, what the stories behind each one might be, how they relate to each other, etc. Yes, he's picking up trash but he's making something much more out of it.

How cool is that guy! I love the NY larking on his river, the streets! It sure says something about our throwaway society but also our history. Amazing. I saw a man who walked the streets near the famous New York diamond district picking up tiny pieces of diamond in the cracks in the sidewalks! People have the coolest imaginations!

Nicola, this was so fun to watch, I love that he finds and makes art! It's fantastic! I love seeing what people 'collect', and why they do so. I collect letters from the 19th century and early 1900's. I also collect some diaries. I love reading what people thought and cared about! My daughter wants to help me put my letters online! I have sets of love letters, they're my favorite! I have a set of letters from 1864 to 1878 of a Scottish family. The family has 3 girls die of TB, three boys, one was a banker in Edinburgh, one came to the United States to farm and one was a ship mate back and forth from London to New York. They all wrote and updated each other. This is too long, when you get passionate about something, you really do. Happy Thanksgiving to all that celebrate it! We wake up and I'm grateful!

Brilliant video. I remember saying to my mudlarking friend Sam "when does it change from picking up rubbish to history?" Now I know. I love the way he displays his art from rubbish! I already collect coins, hunt fossils... getting my mudlarking license soon... and now streetlarking? The collector gene is strong in me!!!
Wow this is fascinating. He’s ahead of his time in a way. Collecting today’s ‘rubbish’ that would be a mudlark’s dream in 100 years time and the thing is, a lot of this stuff would be gone and disintegrated by then as it’s’ card and paper so he’s preserving it for the future historians! I love this!
There's a child-like joy to collecting disposables. As kids in the 60s and 70s we would alight on something like gum trinkets or salt bags, and that was the thing to have for a while. This is the adult version. Cool.

This was so compelling to watch as someone who is also a collector. I sympathize with asking oneself, is this hoarding? But a collection is more closely compared to a museum or an archive. A catalogue of thought-provoking information, an observation of the patterns and inner workings of the world that often go unnoticed. But we notice them. My collection is fossils, invertebrates from over 400 million years ago. I find them on the shores of Lake Michigan, all very weathered in unique ways. I feel like they say something profound but I have not been able to put it into adequate words. From my point of view I’m salvaging memories that are unfathomably old, which would otherwise wear away into sand within only a few centuries.

That was weirdly very interesting. I found myself fascinated by the way every day object's chucked on to the street looked. After rain, wind and kicking about had done their thing. Then been picked up and framed in sets of nine. Bit of a fixation going on there, but we all have our quirks. This one works well for him, i think. Thanks for sharing. I'll never walk a street and not see patterns in every day discarded items, in the same way again. I was amazed at the amount of toothbrushes left on the streets! I can't say its something I've ever seen before. Do we all have electric tooth brushes over here now, or are we more careful with our rubbish disposal. 🤔 😂

Wow someones rubbish thrown away onto the streets becomes beautiful creations of art, showcasing how products have changed over the years. It truly is amazing how humans are a throw away society onto the streets/rivers/lakes/beaches, especially when there is a rubbish bin nearby. But then we wouldn't see Bobby's creations. In New Zealand when our Jandals/FlipFlops that we wear on our feet wear out and the part between the toe comes up thru the hole of the sole, we actually use the Plastic bread tags to hold them in place... Now in NZ they are making them cardboard bread tags, so us Kiwi are saving the PBT's for our future Jandal breakage. lol.*

Found things on the street that others pass by, they find it very nice if you show them. I have a blog where I regularly post things that I come across on the street. What a nice vlog Nicole, recognizable subject.

Really beautiful artwork is made from what he finds. I hear that in some cities the rubbish bins are taken away because people set fire to the bins, so that would mean a great deal more artwork could be made, and imagine the finds!

Remember when I was at school we used to pick up crisp packets and put them on the hot air outlet of the school kitchen. Then try to get them to shrink evenly down into teeny, tiny packets. Now I pickup all the broken BIC lighters I see, and then put together the good parts to make working ones. Even though I stopped smoking decades ago. 😊
VERY interesting....I totally understood assembly art works (creating art by combining items into one piece). And Pop art of everyday objects like Warhol, but I never looked at everyday objects quite like this. I totally get it. Especially seeing what the environment does to an item and seeing them framed in show type environment. VERRRRRY COOOL! Thanks for a great interview!
What an amazing man and his art collection of functional graphic art! The candy cigarettes are what I call early consumer training! Same as baby bottles shaped like soft drinks . A dubious practice to be sure.
thanx for an eye-opening video. i can totally understand Bobby's compulsion to collect thrown away items from the streets. i have always collected paper "garbage" which I use to make little "junk" journals, post cards, envelopes or as collage materials. it can be mail, product packaging, foil seals from food containers, flattened soda cans, etc. I also love Christmas or birthdays for the beautiful wrapping paper most throw away, but rescued by me for it's potential as an art material.
My favorites were the Chinese fortunes and the "Reduce Reuse Recycle" tags - very apropos! But really, I liked them all. I was just as psyched as Bobby was when he realized he had nine of the candy cigarette packs! 😊
Omigosh and the Transaction Records were particularly poignant. One had a balance of $1800 something, the next .43 cents and the next said "insufficient funds". Really told a story, don't you think?
At first I was like, ew, he's picking up garbage? But as the video went on it became more and more fascinating. My favorite was at the end, his artwork with all the numerals. I don't think I'll ever look at garbage the same way. Excellent video.

This is brilliant! I'm not the only streetlarker! I've been picking up discarded facemasks ever since the pandemic started, and I'm still finding them now. About 40% are fully re-usable. Some of them are beautifully made, (mostly cloth ones). Because I travel, I now have examples from three continents. When I go into an office building in Portland that requires masks, if they only knew I'm wearing a mask I picked up at Heathrow airport! 😁
Mea culpa- tongue in cheek.🤣I've already begun moving on to discarded condoms and syringes... some of them may even be from celebrities- who knows? The possibilities of urban detritus are endless. I can even see a future in which streetlarking collections could be categorized as either "Family" streetlarking items, or "Adult" streetlarking items. The human urge to collect and categorize things is a fascinating study in and of itself.
Rad! I skate, for 40 years, but not enough. also, I try to not touch trash.. lol ~sometimes a cool thing strikes.. on the curb. people throw cooler stuff on the curb than one ever finds at the thrift shops.

Really beautiful artwork is made from what he finds. I hear that in some cities the rubbish bins are taken away because people set fire to the bins, so that would mean a great deal more artwork could be made, and imagine the finds!

Remember when I was at school we used to pick up crisp packets and put them on the hot air outlet of the school kitchen. Then try to get them to shrink evenly down into teeny, tiny packets. Now I pickup all the broken BIC lighters I see, and then put together the good parts to make working ones. Even though I stopped smoking decades ago. 😊
VERY interesting....I totally understood assembly art works (creating art by combining items into one piece). And Pop art of everyday objects like Warhol, but I never looked at everyday objects quite like this. I totally get it. Especially seeing what the environment does to an item and seeing them framed in show type environment. VERRRRRY COOOL! Thanks for a great interview!
What an amazing man and his art collection of functional graphic art! The candy cigarettes are what I call early consumer training! Same as baby bottles shaped like soft drinks . A dubious practice to be sure.

thanx for an eye-opening video. i can totally understand Bobby's compulsion to collect thrown away items from the streets. i have always collected paper "garbage" which I use to make little "junk" journals, post cards, envelopes or as collage materials. it can be mail, product packaging, foil seals from food containers, flattened soda cans, etc. I also love Christmas or birthdays for the beautiful wrapping paper most throw away, but rescued by me for it's potential as an art material.
This was fascinating! My favourite art piece is the collage of numbers at the end, though found notes are a close second.
My favorites were the Chinese fortunes and the "Reduce Reuse Recycle" tags - very apropos! But really, I liked them all. I was just as psyched as Bobby was when he realized he had nine of the candy cigarette packs! 😊
Omigosh and the Transaction Records were particularly poignant. One had a balance of $1800 something, the next .43 cents and the next said "insufficient funds". Really told a story, don't you think?

At first I was like, ew, he's picking up garbage? But as the video went on it became more and more fascinating. My favorite was at the end, his artwork with all the numerals. I don't think I'll ever look at garbage the same way. Excellent video.

This is brilliant! I'm not the only streetlarker! I've been picking up discarded facemasks ever since the pandemic started, and I'm still finding them now. About 40% are fully re-usable. Some of them are beautifully made, (mostly cloth ones). Because I travel, I now have examples from three continents. When I go into an office building in Portland that requires masks, if they only knew I'm wearing a mask I picked up at Heathrow airport! 😁
Mea culpa- tongue in cheek.🤣I've already begun moving on to discarded condoms and syringes... some of them may even be from celebrities- who knows? The possibilities of urban detritus are endless. I can even see a future in which streetlarking collections could be categorized as either "Family" streetlarking items, or "Adult" streetlarking items. The human urge to collect and categorize things is a fascinating study in and of itself.

Rad! I skate, for 40 years, but not enough. also, I try to not touch trash.. lol ~sometimes a cool thing strikes.. on the curb. people throw cooler stuff on the curb than one ever finds at the thrift shops.
