Tom reviews the new 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Kakadu Horizon and provides an expert opinion.
Is the Prado the best of the Toyota off-roaders, all things considered? We revisit the 150-series Land Cruiser in today’s video, checking out the new high specification Prado Kakadu Horizon grade, which brings a lush interior and some glitzy exterior additions to the 2020 Prado. With a 2.8-litre turbo diesel four cylinder engine under the bonnet, the Prado isn’t fast, but it is well made and highly capable. But should you buy a Prado over a ute-based wagon like an Everest, Pajero Sport or Fortuner?
In today’s view, Tom Baker from Chasing Cars conducts a review of this new version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, finished in Peacock Black over light cream leather and wood grain.
What do you think of the revised Prado? Do you prefer a traditional 4WD or a family crossover or SUV? Should Toyota give the Prado the V8? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments box below.

Great review. You’re spot on questioning why you would need the pretty tan interior in a car like this. Just go for a VX, leather interior and most of the options and all of the safety, bar air suspension and posh interior. Safe some decent coin and gain the ability to thrash it whilst retaining resale value with the clean interior. Keep up the great work!

My 2010 kakadu still going strong at 430,000km and drives almost as good as a new one. Sure it has its shortcomings but for longevity, reliability and comfort ya can't fault a prado.

As with others Tom, the Prado is popular with nomads of the grey and other varieties!
So I do think the rear spare and auxiliary tank with the addition 60 litres is preferable.
It’s sadly missing some torque and power and CarPlay.
Let’s hoping these increases in output improve the drivability.
I’ll be taking a look as an option for blacktop touring and major unsealed trails such as the Birdsville Track.

@@chasingcars I'd be happy with a good V6 Diesel. I have the 3L Prado which I prefer over the 2.8L but the new 2.8 specs may be better again. It's a lot of kw & Nm from a 4 cylinder, I hope it is as reliable as my 3L has been. 3.5 tonne towing would also be nice, but you will need all of the 500Nm to make that a comfortable drive.

A Toyota dealer has stated that the 150kW 500Nm engine is available as of August 2020. There are many out there ready to attack what Toyota have produced recently - namely DPF issues - and that’s understandable; but if you want to venture into the great Aussie outback and make it back, then I don’t know of anything else that has such an extensive network of support not to mention reliability that’s generally better than any of its competitors.

We have owned a 2007 Toyota Prado 3.0 diesel “Grande’ spec” for 9 years over 200,000 klms.
The adjustable air suspension with its high profile tyres deals with the worst of Australian roads very well.
MUCH more comfortable than the (bought new) previous Nissan Patrol GU6 ST-L spec manual diesel.
Better in all respects and would not consider a Nissan Product now.
If a 3.3 litre Twin Turbo Diesel with or without PHEV (preferably with PLEASE!!) would be perfect.
I have wanted to update for some time, however I believe the 2755cc capacity (2.8) is too small. Since I have a decent solar system (storage) PHEV would be perfect. I could see us hanging onto that vehicle for a very long time. As it stands this current Prado will stay in the family and not be sold.
A 3.3 TT V6 hybrid diesel would be an amazing combination.
Would Graphene be better than Li-ion?
Surely there is something much better than Li-ion, I’m prepared to wait as our 2007 is THAT GOOD.

Gasolin don't have that problem because gasolin is way easier to vaporized than dieseal. Even in extreme low temp area gas car will only need to install block heater to heat up the engine oil to prevent frozen. That's the chemical thing, I just want to say dieseal need a bit more care in winter compare to gas.

Among the highly regarded prado designs, the most failed design is the seven-seat design. When people use off-road vehicles, enough space is the most important thing. Because we always need to carry enough equipment, there is absolutely no need to carry more people, so a five-seater design is sufficient.
With the current seven-seater design, the third row of seats occupies a lot of space. However, this very annoying and completely useless third-row seat cannot be removed.
In the past few years, I replaced two off-road vehicles. They are all seven-seater designs that I hate very much. I have never opened the third row of seats in ten years. This thing is useless.

Toyota Australia always gives their cars stupid names - Kakadu, Kluger, Cruiser etc

Kluger, I agree. Kakadu - I like the name and it's of course an important Indigenous heritage area.

Kakadu... that’s literally the worst name I’ve heard for a trim level. What’s the lower trim called? Poopookaka? I know it’s a park but come on.
