Season 9, Episode 17 'Authority': When restaurant manager Dwight Lomax (guest star Scott Adsit, "30 Rock") is caught molesting a female employee, he claims that he was following orders from a "Detective Milgram" over the phone. As detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) delve into the case, they discover "Detective Milgram" was a hoax by engineer Merritt Rook (guest star Robin Williams). Rook later turns his trial into a media circus by using the courtroom as a soapbox. Rook’s courtroom antics set him free, and with a group of followers, detectives Benson and Stabler fall prey to another one of Rook’s psychological schemes leaving the SVU department vulnerable.

Rest in peace, Robin Williams. The only villainous role I'd seen him play was in "August Rush", and possibly "One Hour Photo."
One Hour Photo and Insomnia are both amazing
One hour photo was his “anti-hero” performance. He was creepy and disturbed, but you felt bad for him and what he went through at the same time.
Insomnia is one of my favorites!
I loved one hour photo. Not sure the name but there was one he played a radio host …that was a chilling movie
@sweetz187 The Night Listener, I haven't seen it, but I'm intrigued
Never thought Robin Williams could be this f'ing terrifying. This was utterly haunting. Mr Williams was a brilliant man, the likes of which we'll never see again in our lifetimes.
You should watch him in the movie "One Hour Photo", another good role where he's playing against his usual type cast.
@@TheVoracity OMG that movie creeped me out.
@@feraltaco4783 It was really good. Williams not only got to play a dramatic role, but he got to be subtle with a lot of his performance. People are so used to his over the top antics that they often miss how phenomenal of a dramatic actor he could be at times.
@@TheVoracity he was an absolutely amazing actor. He was definitely able to nail different roles. That particular movie isn't one I like because I prefer to see him in lighthearted roles.
Insomnia is a good movie where he plays a twisted villain
It’s terrifying to see Robin yelling in anger instead of goofiness.
he was such a good actor.
It's like a clown wielding a gun. It's fuckin' bizarre.
Robin Williams is ICONIC. I sure miss seeing him in movies and tv shows. RIP Mr. Williams 🤧
He really is one of the best legends there ever was🧡♥️🧡♥️
I legit cried when I found out he was gone. Still tears at my heart when I see him. It's always bittersweet. I so very much wish he'd been able to get help. RIP Mr Williams. You are truly missed.
I pray he knew Jesus Christ or he's in not in a good place.
@@freyamccauley "not" in a good place? Good Lord, I hope that was a typo.
@@feraltaco4783 you read correctly. You have a problem with Jesus, not with me. God bless
Funniest part of the episode when they call the “waitress “ who gave her number to robin Williams , they call her and it’s just robin doing his ms doubtfire voice lol 😂
Really? That's awesome lol so did the character actually jump in the water and die?
Its exactly what I thought, I recognize it straight away as William's voice.
This is Jose backwards maybe it's called the,
A form of the actual friend like you want to put people in jail you do but the game still stay. The game of the cost of Notre Mafia they call themselves the Jamaican lottery or something like that be good for 600 murders!!
His 2nd appearance in the franchise, the first being early in Homicide LOTS as a Baltimore tourist who lost his wife to gun violence. The show was hesitant to cast him as he was typecast in comedic roles, but his performance got people watching the series & boosted the ratings.
Go back and look at his filmography credits. Prior to 1994 he had completed several dramatic roles to renown. By this appearance he had proven his dramatic bonafide.
He deserved more dramatic roles. He was a comic genius and everyone loved him for it.
This role proves his capabilities as a dramatic actor.
I wouldn't say he was typecast, as he loved his comedic roles.
Robin Williams... the guy that did iconic dramatic movies in the 90's... was typecasted for comedic roles? Granted, I agree to an extent, because RV and Old Dogs are the same character, but, he wasn't typecasted.
I don't think he was typecast. He was a comedian. I think he just occasionally wanted to do something different as an actor. After his performance in this and.. what was that movie.. Good Will Hunting, maybe? Anyway, after those, I think if he wanted more serious roles he could have gotten them easily.
That was the best episode of the whole show. Wiliams' character is up there as one of the greatest TV villains.
There was another celebrity episode I particularly enjoyed that had Whoopi Goldberg as a drastically overworked child services officer
@@alexsolomon7991 Yes. Whoopi was another excellent guest star for Law & Order: SVU.
He wasn’t a villain though
He wasn’t a villain though
He wasn’t a villain though
Whenever Robin played a comedic role, I think he was trying to make people laugh to never feel the inner pain he did. When he played these kinds of roles, I think he was letting that pain loose.
“You have no idea what I suffered” that came from a real place, even if he was playing a character. Good actors channel from their actual lives.

“Went into that water cuffed, he is dead.” Whatever, the guy is still alive and has outwitted Stabler and Olivia. No body, he is still alive.

The late Robin Williams gave one of the finest performances of his long illustrious career in this episode.
Absolutely brilliant!
100% agree with you on that.
It's crazy that even the good Robin Williams has played villains.
Robin William's biggest villain was mental illness and it won.
He almost played Joker in 1989's Batman, and then was the top pick for Riddler in Batman Forever. God he would have been PERFECT as the Riddler, especially after seeing this performance.

@@JamaicanRainikr 2014 to now
Merritt Rook is probably still the only major perp on SVU to have never died or been caught.
Props to the late Robin Williams for helping craft such a memorable one-time character.
At least, if you assume he survived his plunge
@@jamiemiller1482 he committed suicide
@@drwho-hj1pu yeah the guy was saying that he didn’t die
@@jamiemiller1482 to each their own
@@drwho-hj1pu he didn't, the girl was absolutely wrong and thought that he died simply because his hands were cuffed. Having your hands cuffed like that does not mean a death sentence, nor does it mean you won't be able to swim.
People sometimes forget Robin had incredible range. Comedy obviously but also drama and suspence. Be at peace my friend. You won't be forgotten.
Robin Williams deserved an Emmy for that award winning performance.
Indeed
He was nominated, at least!
Talk about a memory being unlocked. I remember watching this episode when I was younger with my mom and I had no idea Robin Williams in it and it was my first time seeing him as a bad guy. Looking back at that scene, it makes me incredibly curious how he got Olivia's screams on file. She had to have been hurt in some way

I always wanted a sequel of this storyline and a return of the same actor playing him. Also, the storyline of the RBK killer. The one that was named after the the Humphrey Bogart character and was afraid of the dark and closets. I want a sequel to that one.
Or the “psychic” guy that had been doing stuff in Montreal and then came to New York under a fake name. Sebastian or whoever it was. That actor was so good you genuinely hated him and there’s been a few perps who have pulled that off.

And that's the end of the episode. The thing is, there's no way anybody jumped into that water! Look at it. It's almost perfectly still. The guy is still hiding in the bushes somewhere. Perfect ending for a sequel, but there was none. Shameful missed opportunity!

I always loved this episode because of RW, and as Stabler said at 6:34 it is the Milgram experiment but that went over my head dozens of times watching this episode through the years because I had no clue what it was.
My senior year English class we learned about the Milgram Psychological Experiment that measured people's obedience to authority even when they knew the shocks they administered caused pain. Upon learning of it i remembered this episode because of this scene & i remembered earlier in the episode he pretended to be "Detective Milgram" as well along with his entire character in the episode revolving around the idea od "Sheep" & "Authority"
One of the best episodes in the series because of Williams. I love how convincing he is, despite us knowing he's guilty he's so charming he can convince other's otherwise. My 2nd favorite moment in the episode was in court when he contested the detective's photographic evidense against him by pointing out the photo they used was digitally enhanced to which he shows the jury the photo they enhanced ehich was so blurry you couldnt make out anyone in the photo. He says something along the lines of:
"Well that could be more or- it could even be Juror #4"
They reply
"Its not me haha"
Then Robin replies very convincingly
"Its not me either"
Robin Williams was very clever to pulled all that stunt, he was amazing actor that was also amazing tribute he will be missed
