Man I love your vibe, this video is 100% perfectly what I need right now. Thank you!!!
How come you don’t have at least 100k subscribers? You’re very helpful and knowledgeable, I appreciate all the info you provide us !!!
Thanks Dany- the road is long, but that’s the goal! First 10k, then the world!
I’m still using the fireface 400 on the new generation M1 macs… Will probably get the ARC for my workflow.
Totalmix and the ARC is the complete solution.... one button to go from your Stereo setup to your 5.1 setup.... it is the way to go!!! (I am still using a modified (added t/b foot switch control) old version) ... TOTALMIX is the Shizzz!!!!
oh....and any button...can be anything!! Yeah!!
Hi,
I am a Rme user, I was thinking about buying the Arc for monitor controlling. The only doubt I have is that with that controller you need to use 2 DA channels for every stereo monitoring set. For example if you have 2 set of speakers and a set of headphones you need a totale of 6 channels of DA just for monitoring, while with a "traditional" monitor controller you just need a stereo out (2 DA channels) and it routes the signal to all the monitoring sources. Am I correct?
Greetings
Love your videos! I'd like to pick your brain about your set up as i am in the process for upgrading my studio.
I'm in the process of making a deal on RME Fireface 800 and I was really surprised on the price of the ARC when I looked for it... it seems like a must have and isn't expensive... and it'll probably work forever with totalmix, even after you've upgraded your interface for the fifth time with a newer one :D
So yeah, it went to my "must buy when able" list :D
I have the TC Electronics volume knob you spoke of in the video. I also am receiving a RME Digiface USB arriving today. will I be able to continue using the volume knob or will I need to get the ARC controller?
Would it be possible to assign the foot switch to rec/stop?
So if you have an iPad handy with the RME app, will that do a better, more comprehensive job of everything the ARC does, or is there something additionally useful the remote does, other than big physical knobs are nice? (Not currently an RME owner, but weighing up all options, including sub-options, as normally an interface lasts best part of 10 years so far!) Can that ARC remote be assignable to punch-in? My current old firewire MOTU (that's finally gone intermittent and is due to be replaced) has a remote on the back of the interface you can assign to any key, so I use it to turn record on/off during overdubs, so I'd miss that feature and this box seems a possible RME equivalent option.the RME seems nicer overall and has double the mic pres, but is the best part of 2x the money.
How are you able to use TotalMix's Effects processors with a RayDat? I see you have EQ and Dynamics available in TotalMix FX. Is there a way to integrate the effects processors with a RayDat setup?
I'm at a loss, what do you use to simply feed audio to the monitors? I'm theorycrafting a setup with a digiface dante, some high channelcount dante preamps, and this USB contorller for totalmix - but none of these allow for an output to my monitoring speakers. I assume there are dedicated RME dacs that fill this hole (like maybe the adi-2?), although I haven't been able to confirm if that interacts with totalmix via usb like that...
Like you said, you can attach a DAC to the Dante system or use the headphone analog outs on the Digiface. Dante really is aimed more at complex multi-studio setups and live sound, you might be better off with a different option like Madi depending on what you’re needing specifically
@@adamsteelproducer i could use a madi dac to power studio monitors... The reason I'm going for dante here is for expandability and interoperability with a radio station we have in the same building which is configured via aes67, with a distant goal being to run kexp-style performances on top of also being a recording studio.
It's a bit tough thinking of a routing situation abstractly since in order to get everything in the same instance of totalmix fx, the signal path has to end at a single usb device at the computer (excluding the arc)... I'll keep looking around, thank you for the response!
Damn you, I got drunk last night watched your video and ordered an ARC. I am currently using a Palmer Monicon which after 2 years has turned to shit with its noisey volume pot. It an enclosed pot so really difficult to clean. Can't wait to get it out of my life.
Well I hope it brings you joy and relief! Mine still gets daily use with no problems 👍
Can I connect 2 pairs of monitors to rme hdsp 9632 and control it with rme arc usb? And then just switch simultaneously...
Yes you can! There’s a button on the Arc to switch between them and a setup to link the 2 monitor volumes
I would like to know. You mention not using a passive volume control anymore since getting the rme arc. You've claimed better sound because the passive control is no longer in the signal path. However, if only using the Rme Arc do you notice a loss of resolution when attenuating your output monitors now that's being digitally controlled by the ARC? There's much debate why it is better to use a monitor controller after the DA to monitors. What's your take on this? You don't mention this in your video. I also use an RME UCX and have been wondering about this very thing. Some say use one, others say it colors your sound. Is there a particular way you calibrate your monitors now using the ARC? Thanks.
Good question. I’ve calibrated my monitors to a comfortable listening level around -12dB on Totalmix during a loud master, and around 0dB on a usual mix. I set the volume from there as needed on the monitors (or amp in the NS10’s case) and leave them alone. I feel that with 120dB or more of resolution in the DA converters, I’d rather rely on that than on a passive volume attenuator which has electrical limitations. I know there are passive controllers out there that are high enough quality for me to be happy, but they’re all in the over-£1000 price range. All I can say is that I removed my old passive volume controller and used Totalmix instead, and the difference in sound quality really surprised me. I didn’t think there would be a huge difference but it was like a blanket had been lifted off the monitors
Hop Pole Studios thanks for the info. So I assume setting your monitors volumes up as you described you haven’t heard any degradation in the resolution or sound? I’m debating the same thing right now with my UCX. I will be running 2 pair of monitors and so I’m thinking I need to invest into another DA to have more outputs to run these 2 pair of monitors and still have some open outputs. That is if using just the ARC to control them through totalmix. I’m definitely gonna try this method first though. I just fear using totalmix digital control when that unexpected 0db reset in total mix or something hits you monitors. Not having that analog volume control with a panic mute kinda makes me hesitating just using the ARC only.
J. Sun It cannot possibly colour your sound, it's probably controlling totalmix via midi information. It's a great bit of kit.
So it’s kind of like a computer mouse that looks different?
Not really, it’s a remote control that does lots of things without having to bring up menus all the time
to be honest, ARC USB is one of most disappointing devices made by RME ever,
functions assignable to buttons are very limited, something like dim/mute phones isn't possible, also because "infinite" wheel, there's no real visual clue about output level,
I ended up using my old second-hand Faderport adjusted via Bome Midi software, to use its fader to control totalmix fx main volume, much more convenient than ARC USB sadly
Well I find ARC very useful, and I have Totalmix up on a screen all the time- and why have dim headphones when you can click the headphone button and turn it down with the knob? It sounds like your needs are very specific. Also, get in contact with RME. With it being software driven, if enough people ask for the same thing I’m sure they will add features to new updates
I'm in touch with RME all the time, it's a great company,
let's not forget the TotalMix FX is just a mere visual control for internal hardware DSP, there is literally nothing going on in TotalMix FX itself, except presets and storing layouts and setups - majority of functionality depends on hardware which is not possible to update (or at least not easily),
when you check TMFX settings "arc and key command settings", the mapping possibilities to choose from are very limited, despite the ARC USB itself is capable of having any button set to any available function, I asked about that on RME forums and got no reply yet, I believe RME is focusing more on optimizing TMFX use rather than hardware control - the recent release of TMFX Remote is step forward, works great :)
Is it possible to configurate an ARC button as MUTE button? (like setting DIM button to -infinite db?)
Yes. Either for the main outs or any faders assigned to one of the 4 mute groups in TotalMix.
