      maybe you tell them that 3 eq band is too few. for speaker and headphone correction there should at least 10 EQ bands with left and right independent EQ for 2 stereo output channels . so not all channels need this. Eq should be dynamic. when on channels not use EQ it can use more on other channels

      I.7k Jesus Christ that is a lot, all I want is to have my Yamaha hs8 plugged in and atria key lab 49 keyboard and MacBook Pro and one xld mic tbh. the thing that got me with my first audio interface focus rite scarlet 2i2 is that audio is much louder and I love that because I have shit hearing but with my MacBook Pro m3 max I plug in my audio technica mx50 and they sound quite loud but I don't think as lopped as with my windows pc but I'm not 100% there's so many cables I need to change its a bit annoying. I need usb type c to usb b which is 2. and I need usb type c to usb type c for my GoPro battery charger. I have new Alienware aw3423wdf monitor and used displayport to type c and the HDR is weird and not correct but its alright ai guess but not perfect I must say as I don't see real HDR as it looks standard definition. when I use the monitor with my i5 Skylake 6400 and GTX1070 it works good but ive noticed I need better GPU like 3070 at least and plan to make a new build with DDR 5 ram as the build I have is 2015 but still quite good. my motherboard Asus b150m doesn't do usb type c so that's shit. also why the hell do we have to have antennas on motherboards for wifi? my MacBook Pro doesn't and when I search networks it picks up more networks than my pc network wifi card., I just bought my first m.2 Samsung 970 eco plus 1tb and I love it for my games but its full; and want more m.2 slots. my audio technics mic at2035 I think it is the model, isn't good for screen recording gaming and typing on keyboard and mouse as it picks up sound so I heard to get a proper gaming headset mic with direct voice input like.

      I had HDSP 9652 for 18 years. I changed 3 computers, it kept working. Now RayDAT PCIe. I guess I'm gonna die before this card gives up on me. btw. the HDSP 9652 still works normally. After 18 years. RME card is an investment, but it's a good investment. Unlike UA or DigiDesign ****.

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +99

    If these are out of budget it's worth remembering that old RME interfaces STILL WORK because they write their own drivers and do not brick or obsolete their devices, to their great credit.
    As a result my RME UFX from FOURTEEN years ago works exactly as it did when first purchased.

      Yes, RME products are a high value. Even 2nd hand. I bought HDSP9652 and now RayDAT 2nd hand and it still wasn't cheap, but after a couple of decades of using their audio cards you just can't use anything else. The driver is rock solid on any OS. So usable, transparent in the best way, all ways, and good to use until it dies or you die first. ;)

      Gear past 15 years old is very risky. Capacitors wear out over time. And, because most electronic techs are nothing more than thieves, you're better off buying new gear or gear not over five years old .

    •  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, for most companies I'd say that's true, but RME stuff just seems to keep working. @@SubmergeEmerge 🤷‍♂

      @@SubmergeEmerge Old low end elco caps do fail, but there are many 50yo caps out there still truckin like the day they were made. There is something called the free market, where guys do cap replacements for fixed fees using the best caps on the planet, or any caps you like. You really should get out more ;-). I used to do that sort of stuff years ago, you could learn to do it yourself too, as an option - it really isn't that hard.
      Most techs aren't thieves, although some as charitably put 'iffy' - but you can make deals with people. On the other hand, if replacing $5-10 worth of caps takes an hour and a half to do because of disassembly and reassembly of some wonky case, don't expect it to be $10 total. No one is preventing you from doing it yourself, you'll need a few hundred worth of gear though.

    This has been the best purchase I made for my studio in the last years, I was thinking of buying a Universal Audio interface but for the price tag the RME is far mor versatile, easy to use and equally good in quality, also Totalmix compared to UAudio's console is far more intuitive and also gives you ton of different possibilities. I hadn't explored the Snapshots so this video really helped me with that.

      People say RME is expensive. Yes they are. But there is a difference between expensive because it deserves to be, and because "audiophile talk" or "exclusivity talk". More than 20y ago I thought RME products were exclusive, but then I bought one. And I'm not wealthy by any standard. They got me hooked pretty much because the driver worked great in any OS and the hardware is made rock solid, no compromises. Repairable even, to an extent.

      Yep, every audio manufacturer should make in-depth instructional videos for all their gear. It's just common sense in this age. When I picked up this interface, I couldn't figure out how to change the sample rate. I was looking thru the TotalMix drop-down menus for that. I called RME tech support and didn't know the settings I needed where installed in the little pop-up tray on the bottom right of Windows. It's little time-consuming, frustrating things like this that would of saved me a lot of trouble.

    I've been using RME products since the 90s (approx. 15 different audio interfaces / mic preamps; like DIGI 32/8, 3xMultiface + HDSP PCI & CARDBUS, Fireface 800, HDSP 9652, Octamic, Fireface 400, Fireface UFX + BRC, Octamic 2, Babyface, Babyface Pro, Fireface UCX2... ). If there have ever been technical problems, they have always turned out to be mac or pc hardware failures. RME hardware just gets better like good wine as it ages (with driver & firmware updates).
    TotalMix and especially TotalMix Remote and DIGICheck are great tools included in the package.
    Thanks for the tips, even an old dog will learn something new thanks to these videos :)

    This is the clearest and most useful walkthrough of TotalMix that I've seen, thank you. I'll have snapshots for default, a few recording modes, jamming / idea capture, and live streaming. You've also made a great case for adding ARC USB; while iPad control certainly is enough, having a tactile mini-console on the desktop is very appealing. For peace of mind, I am evaluating both UCX II and the new UFX III. In your demo you fairly quickly fill the available I/O on the UCX II. Also, working mainly at home I like the stable UFX III 1U form factor with built-in PS, and ability to have both DUREC and ARC USB always connected. While the cost difference gives pause, it's easier to justify knowing I'll have this interface for many years. Best regards

      Thanks for watching. If you have a lot of gear I would definitely go UFXiii. I will probably upgrade to that,,, but, keeping the UFX2 connected to my synths. Then using the UFX as aADAT expansion in the studio. But still having that portability. Sort of overkill but so damn flexible.

    • @SubmergeEmerge
      @SubmergeEmerge 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      UFX3 replaces most the gear. Much cheaper to buy it up front. Unless you're recording orchestras, it has all the I/O you'll ever need. I returned the UCX2 and actually saved money with the UFX3 by not having to buy all the extra gear. It's the best stand alone unit on the market. That and a laptop is about all you will need.

    One thing worth mentioning here, which I've only discovered recently as I ran out of IO.
    If you have the UCX II but need to expand on the IO you will NOT be able to expand with a Digiface for additional ADAT (if you're on windows) as you'll end up having to use the Digiface (ASIO) as the master and the UCX II over Toslink as the slave.
    The only way that would work is by getting the UFX II which is obviously a lot more with 60 IO and can be paired with something like the Digiface.
    I'm stuck with the hard decision of either trading my UCX II for the UFX II for 20 more IO (or) getting myself a Cranborne audio 500ADAT and having the benefit of a 500 Module but with the limitations of 48kHz

I have the best of both worlds: quick intuitive workflow and clean hi definition sonics. My setup is somewhat different than yours, so it was interesting how you have everything connected. How do you monitor the singer with only one headphone out? Through the SSL? I connected a Presonis 4 headphone preamp into 5&6 and I monitor from the main 7/8 headphone output. Great question. I would say the difference is minimal and really depends on your speakers and room. Maybe with highend speakers and a very treated room, you might be a tiny bit of a difference but after an hour of using either one without comparing, either one will sound amazing. I wouldn’t use that as a deciding factor, more so the ins and outs. I currently am expanding the studio with the ufx3 but the ucx2 converts sound just as good.

    M-Audio Delta 66 that's what i use and still use with a preamp and a countryman 85 di. "Yeah, but the convertors are bad, RME is much better". Ok, that's details that nobody hears in the mix, but let's pretend for a second that someone does. Unless you have a production with 20 layers of tracked vocals that might make it noticeable in the mix.
    But since most people don't, it's not worth the money (most 'people' use Autotune set in the wrong key and one solo vocal and some adlibs). The preamp and the mics plays a bigger role in the production aswell as sound-selection. If you've read this and saved some bucks, let me know!

    I own a RME UCX II and I use it to run Windows... because of all of the ins and outs to route to my Rodecaster Pro II and then my streaming computer but to record music in my DAW I use a $200 Zoom 32-bit interface. The Zoom only has 2 ins and outs but the 32-bit recording is the absolute best in the industry hands down. Once I switched to 32-bit recording I never want to go back to 24-bit. Some people say the files are larger but not by that much a regular song project is at most only a few gigs or usually less. I hope Zoom comes out with a 32-bit 4 in and out device soon. I couldn't not do my streaming gig without the UCX device but for recording it is Zoom all the way. The sound quality of the UCX Fireface is second to Zoom.

      Would love to try a 32bit workflow

    • @miltonfostersound
      @miltonfostersound ปีที่แล้ว

      Whereas the Zoom interface you have is capable of capturing a higher bit depth (which only really plays into two factors of the perceived sound quality: noise floor and overall level of the recording) the quality of conversion (sample accuracy in the frequency and time domain) are vastly different.
      You can think of 32 bit as a bigger pipe for your audio signals to flow through unaffected, but if the source of your water (which in this analogy can be everything from the instrument to the AD convertor) does not allow water to pass through cleanly, then you still end up with an impure/coloured result. One of the tell tale differences is how transients are smeared, almost as if you were recording with a transient removal plugin.
      Also, multistage ADC’s (like the ones employed by Zoom) can have weird errors like supersonic frequency dropouts as they transition from one converter chip to another. And this isn’t to bash Zoom, as I own and love my F6 which can do up to 192/32. But it pales in comparison to my RME Babyface Pro FS (which goes up to 192/24) in terms of fidelity.
      However, what really matters is what helps you get to the end result. If you find yourself in a situation where you’re unable to set the gain on your preamp so as to prevent your signal from being captured to low (closer to the noise floor) or to loudly (at risk of clipping), then 32 bit is helpful. That’s why these 32 bit recorders can work well for unpredictable, highly dynamic sound sources on location. If you’re more than capable of setting gain levels for your sources and want to do more than just capture sound without clipping or being too close to the noise floor, then an interface with a higher quality analogue to digital convertor (ADC) is preferred.
      Hope this helps.

      I stand by my comment that my Zoom 32 bit recordings sound better and yes the noise floor is the big thing. I had to wrap my head around the fact that the Zoom does not have an input gain knob at all. At first I found this to be terrible but as time went on I realized that when I need to go back in and re-sing a line or two, there is nothing to set. I only have to get my mic to mouth proximity right and I can seamlessly add or replace vocals or other tracks. Now I am very glad and comforted that there is no input knob to have to reset to the same exact place every time. The input never changes. My mic has a PAD button which is really great so my mic is always louder than my tracks. Also I have a very loud voice from many years of singing, now, it is "impossible" for me to clip. Before I had vocals that sounded distorted and shrill from overdriving the single chip even when the peak meter was not blinking. Maybe because there was only one chip doing the work...Or rather because of the noise floor. As I said I will never go back to 24 bit recording and in my lifetime I have recorded around 500 original songs, so I do have some experience in this area. My PC has 18 Intel extreme cores, 128GB of fast RAM and 2 X RTX 3090 GPUs, so the Zoom has to only record and playback and that it does without a single flaw. As for transients, that was the problem I was having with 24 bit, the transients were "unstable and wonky sounding", the single chip design could not hear them and they were muffled and again, distorted. I find that problem less with the Zoom but not completely perfect but much better. Forget about "all" other audio interfaces for your DAW and buy a Zoom. And when Zoom comes out with 4 in and out replace it with that and you will be set for life. Get the RME UCX II to run Windows it is the only device that can handle all of your ins and out as well as it does. I have owned about 8 audio interfaces including, RME Fireface UCX II(current), EMU 1616M, Steinberg, Roland, Behringer, and Creative labs Audigy, with sound fonts, Realtek... I have never liked the way any of them reproduce transients. The Zoom hits the spot, my vocals are NEVER distorted and I can sing as loud as I want without any thought to gain level. Zoom records things at the level they really are. Even with the Zoom for my DAW I still need the RME Fireface UCX II for Windows, can't do without it. @@miltonfostersound

      I have also spoken with other support teams from Apogee and UAD via email and they said they don't expect Apple to pull the plug until a solution is found. So I guess we can assume not until after OS 15. Take that with a grain of salt though because who knows what Apple will do. It's definitely not the end of the world and I'm sure that the Kets work fine, but it's just very much less than ideal to have that sword hanging there over our heads. My main concern actually isn't that this might affect the quality of the devices but I don't appreciate this not being told to consumers up front. Again I need to point out that this is an unlikely occurrence in the future and a solution being had before that sword drops on our heads is much more likely, as someone that doesn't have thousands of dollars to roast on this stuff I would like to know before spending all this money.

    Great video sir!!!!!!!!, I have one question, Rme and other companies make separate Dacs (digital to analog converters) and same size of a converter costs double, what's the core difference between audio interface and converter? I know that it will be sound but how much of a difference it makes in practicality?

    • @CREATEEDUCATEINSPIRE
      @CREATEEDUCATEINSPIRE  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really depends on your audio chain. If you have low or mid speakers, sometimes the difference will not be as obvious if you have high end mixers. A lot of times it’s differences in clarity and stereo separation. I recently updated from the UCX to the UFX3, for the Madi expansion. The UFX3 has the same converters as the high end Adi2Pro. If I compared the UCX and UFX side by side, you have hear a bit more clarity but if not side by side, they both sound great and your ears adapt. What’s more important is spending a lot of time listening to reference tracks on your set up so you can learn to match their sonics. A good engineer should be able to mix on anything once they get used to the sound and understand the setup. If you’re not trying to be a professional mixing guy, just get an audio interface that has enough ins and out for your set up.

  • @dddux
    @dddux 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Total mix is totally overwhelming at first, but once you wrap your head around Ins/SoftOuts/Outs + Routing Matrix concept, you start to see how genius and Totally Flexible it is. It's quite important to understand it completely to avoid any "what's up? why is it not working?" moments while working and just wanting to record something. If you have a hard time figuring it out, dedicate an afternoon to making presets and write down what they're doing. That's what I do with clients who can't understand it. If using Linux like me, I worked with a HDSP-9652 for a long time, and now I'm using RayDAT. If using Linux, you can use RME products (even though not officially supported) and that's great! Being Class Compliant is great, but not a necessity with RME.

    Compared to a dedicated DAC like Mytek or Crane Song or Burl it, well, it kind of sucks to be blunt. They make great interfaces yes but as far as AD/DA I'd look elsewhere. But in the end. Analog tape is only about equivalent to, 12 bit digital. In dynamic range. And noise floor.. To, 3% of the 3rd Harmonic at 1 kHz. 0-VU. At operating levels ranging from 185 nano Webbers per meter to that of over 320 nano Webbers per meter. Operating level. Based upon that harmonic distortion criteria of the 3rd Harmonic of 1 kHz at 3% distortion.
    And then a Flutter level of approximately, 0.3%, against a 3 kHz triangle wave. Which American machines could sometimes deliver. Depending upon capstan drive motor type. AC or DC servo. With AC you are looking at, 0.7% flutter. Oh well! With AC motor. You cannot sync to, Time Code. To fly back and forth from a computer. Oh well. Without DC servo capstan motor drive. And 2 tracks for SMPTE, timecode. Because you really can have a usable track next to that track. It seeps over and sounds nasty. Like thousands of puppies being crushed to death. In the background.
    And so going purely digital. With some analog, hybrid as the key. You're not going to run all tracks with analog tape saturation. Because it really is not necessary. Even Bob Clearmountain. Told me. He never quite much liked, analog tape. I was like, really Bob? He said really.
    I love Bob Clearmountain. Many of us just wanted to be, Bob Clearmountain. Though originally. I wanted to be George Massenburg. I knew of him before I knew of Bob Clearmountain. I knew George Massenburg before he was famous. I knew them when I was 15. And he was 23. And had just opened up his own recording studio called ITI. He had left the studio he had gotten his start at. That had just hired me at 17. And we were both mentored by the same guy.. Outside of that studio. We had also met up with. I was introduced to by a family friend. He was a genius electrical engineer by the name of Thomas M. Bray. And the Father of Vertical Hold for TV as we know it. Which he created in 1948 while working at Bell Laboratories. And you won't find him in any history book anywhere. Because those engineers like him. Were owned by Bell Laboratories. Bell Laboratories patented his vertical hold circuit. Even though he created that on his own time at home.. And brought it in for his colleagues to see work. And they immediately patented it. And sold the patent to RCA. Who later in the fall of 1948. Offered the first consumer TVs. With Tom Bray's, Vertical Hold, circuit. That made TV finally possible. Not requiring an actual Engineer. To keep your TV picture from looking like scrambled eggs. Because once the vertical and horizontal goes out. You can't dial it back in. Without test equipment. And that's what Tom Bray's circuit revolutionized TV as we know it. And in no history books will you find this. It's obscure history.
    And so some of us know a lot more than other self-professed experts and college professors claim. By virtue of our background, experience and private in-depth education. From an electrical engineering genius. That realized I was a 15-year-old without a father. And what was Tom? He was also a former Methodist Minister. That in the end. Told me. He had a bad taste in his mouth over organized religion. He was deemed, overly, progressive. For the Methodist Church in the early 1950s. And he was booted from his church. Even though he was a much loved minister. And after that. He was down on organized religion. And I had a pseudo-father. Who had his own family, 18-year-old married daughter and 12-year-old son. And he took time out for me. He helped me. He helped me a lot. He was more of a father to me than my own ever was. And he and his wife Janet both died of pancreatic cancer. Because while they were living in Pennsylvania. They lived near a paper mill. And everyone came down with pancreatic cancer. The water was poisoned. And it got him many years later. They both died within months of each other. I miss them terribly. What an incredible man he was and former US Navy World War II.. Working on microwave stuff. He told me. He was working on microwave stuff for Bell Laboratories.
    There are so many other great Americans that are not famous. For the incredible things they have contributed to our lives. Like the incredible medical electronic machinery. MRIs, cat scanners, enhanced x-rays. Endoscopic surgeries. Teeny tiny high resolution color video cameras. At the end of the string in your veins. These people should all be famous. For saving people's lives. And Tom Bray was directly involved with Siemens, GE, Phillips medical electronic diagnostic equipment. They looked to Tom. To figure out all of the calibration procedures for the stuff they had invented. Because they didn't know how to do that themselves. That's what he did while at Hopkins University for 23 years. Until they laid him off one day. And he was so looking forward to his retirement after 25. He just wanted to go fishing in the loch Raven reservoir in his little dinghy rowboat. And they let him go. So they could hire a younger PhD they could pay less. And my feelings changed for, IV League, For Profit, Universities. I no longer believe in them. Because that's bullshit!
    And within one week of Tom getting laid off. I got him a full-time gig. Hired doing what he loved. Working for the newest, biggest, recording studio south of New York City. Which had just opened in Baltimore. And they offered me the job of Chief Maintenance Engineer. Of this multimillion dollar facility. When I was only 16 years old. And I declined the offer. With a lame excuse. That I felt at 16. That was far too much responsibility for me to take on. And I was lying through my teeth. When I recommended they should hire Tom. And the VP asked me Tom who? I said Thomas M Bray, my mentor. And the response from Craig Kenney,, surprised me.
    Tom Bray! What happened to Tom!? I said do you know him? He said, YES I KNOW HIM! WHAT HAPPENED?
    Craig told me. He was a stock boy as a teenager. For the elitist hi-fi store of Baltimore. And Tom was their consultant. To check everything about the gear. And inform them if it was worthy to carry or not. And so Craig hired Tom, immediately. Yay! I got my mentor a job! That he loves! As he had a small studio of his own, downtown Baltimore. Near the shipping docks. It was a little voiceover studio. With his home built equipment and a couple of old Ampex recorders. And here he was. In the latest greatest state-of-the-art studio on the East Coast. With API Audio Consoles and Scully recorders.
    And of course. A few months later after I had turned 17. In the fall of 1973. I got hired on as a full-blown, Production and Maintenance Engineer. And working with my mentor Tom. It couldn't get any better than this! And I'm working at the studio that gave George Massenburg his first job.

      Thanks for checking out the video. Regarding the phones, you can set the outputs in the back as phones as well, so you could have 1 in the front and 2 more stereo phones in the back, or 4 mono phone mixes out the back. I currently run the single front phones into a splitter amp that works great.
      I know you can control total mix with midi, I just haven't tried it, but something like the behringer X touch might be mappable to take care of everything, I just haven't tried it yet. Great future video idea.

    This is so good , the only not so good about RME, are their instructions on video. They should hire you .
    I bought the Rme UCX 2 when it was released .At first I hesitated as Its rather expensive, but you will forget it because it just works. After different troubles with interfaces from Audient and Tc Electronic etc. its like "coming home". But if you dont have the need for all the connections In UCX2 , then go for the beautiful RME Babyface Pro Fs - Which sounds just as good. Ive owned both. As this very good video points out the drivers from RME are second to none. If the Rme software "total mix" are "overkill for your needs or dosent fit your workflow, then just use the "operational mode" ( also called "Dawmode" ) of Totalmix which is a much more simple layout, and quick to operate.

      Is there no difference in sound of ucx 2 and babyface pro fs? I was going to buy ucx, but I don’t know if there will be noticeable difference with my babyface fs, which sound i do not really like, more high mids and little harsh than my previous rme ff800. I used my ff800 about 11 years, and it had more transparent sound with good balance of lows mids and highs. I dont need a lot of channels

    I received a response from RME.regarding the issue with connecting an electric guitar to the ADI2 Pro FS R. Unfortunately, it is not possible to do so directly. To make this work, you will need to combine it with the Babyface Pro. In total, you can expect to spend approximately $2600, not including the necessary cables.
