Iʻm half Hawaiian, live in Hawaiʻi and am terrorized on a regular basis. Most of the people in Honolulu are not Hawaiian and donʻt care about our culture at all. Except when Mauna Kea got international press and then they all put "we stand with mauna kea" stickers on their social media pictures.
My husband is Hapa Hoale, his mother’s side is/was there. He’s currently landlocked, but wants to go back next year. I’m learning the history, customs, and as time goes on, more and more recipes (his late and wonderful mother left her recipe books to the kids) and if we stay stateside, I want to open up a Hawaiian bakery and possibly a small specialty restaurant with foods that the other places don’t do. Though I’m told that Las Vegas is so occupied by Hawaiians that it’s called the 9th island. 🤷🏻♀️ What I’m saying is that if a person is going to travel to somewhere that different, they SHOULD learn about the place and their customs, culture, and respect the people. My dad passed away on Monday. I used to tell him the things I’ve learned from your dark history episodes and we would go down rabbit holes trying to learn more info and get absolutely lost in it for hours at a time. You really do be bringing families together.

I've been thinking the same! There's all this fuss about what should be taught in schools out of fear of waning nationalism, when a realistic look in the mirror is what would actually help us solve our problems. It's weird that it's taking an entertaining TH-cam channel to do the job.

As a kanaka maoli ( indigenous native ) I appreciate seeing posts like these. I think there should be laws in place that protect more of the land from over development. I think there are already stipulations on some places that you have to be native to buy that property. Which is brilliant!

@@meltingpointcreations1457 as someone born and raised in Hawaii, but is not a Hawaiian herself, I think the main thing to understand is that it is your ‘kuleana’ or responsibility to learn Hawaiian culture before you plan your visit. It is not on the locals or kanaka maoli (meaning native Hawaiian) to teach you about a land that was stolen from them and their ancestors. Many native Hawaiians struggle to keep their land due to colonization. Native Hawaiians can’t even afford their own land. And it’s not about money for kanaka Maoli, the land or ‘āina(land and sea) holds a cultural history that is not taught to mainstream Americans. It’s about a deep connection to the land, spirits and ancestors. Hawaii’s economy as it stands today does rely on tourism (even tho kanaka maoli knew how to sustain themselves off of the land in the first place), but there is a way to travel correctly! Especially in a place as magical as Hawaii. But that magic does not belong you, it belongs to the Hawaiians who have always felt the spirit and taken care of THEIR home

The Hawaiian Palace had electricity before the White House and the people knew how to sustain themselves off the land without help of the outside world who brought infectious diseases and illnesses such as measles, chicken pox, polio and tuberculosis killed thousands of Kanaka Maoli. The natives have been displaced by the U.S government & Stanford DOLE, who banned our language, hula and culture. Now the U.S Navy is poisoning our water with jet fuel (Red Hill) and trying to build another telescope on scared land. Billionaires aka Jeff Bezos & Mark Zuckerburg r buy most of the land which raises housing. Zuckerberg bought most of the land in Kauai 🤯Once again the colonizing continues.. Other were tortured and killed and so many people don’t know this. It’s saddening me and it’s heartbreaking that so much stories are forgotten. the trauma our ancestor went thru is indescribable.
Same with my family, coming from the Dakota Mdewkanton. Our histories are much the same, as my grandmother was the first generation to be removed from her family and forced into Indian Schools. They were also beaten into submission. My grandmother couldn’t speak English, and was chained to a radiator heater in an attic for two days with no food or water for speaking her native language, when she was 6 years old! This was the common practice of acculturation and assimilation. It was either this, or genocide. We also should not be a part of the USA. This is colonization of the planet, and all tribal indigenous people and societies, with dependent, agricultural-urbanized, whitewashed, mainstream, status quo humans, and the domestication and farming of animals, that causes these people, who are totally dependent on this food system, to overpopulate, overthrow, and become the dominant paradigm, and the majority population. So, honestly, if you don’t support colonization, from a tribal-indigenous perspective, then you absolutely must boycott, and end all support of the animal agriculture industry worldwide effective immediately! Otherwise, you’re just acculturated, and assimilated, and are whitewashed, just like they are.

Fun fact: Queen Liliuokalanis while held prisoner in her own Palace and forced to sign her country away or suffer the death of her people wrote a diary that was found in 1993 hidden under the float boards of her Palace on Oahu that started the sovereign movement.
True - Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned in her own palace and forced to abdicate her throne, to save her people from blood shed. Her diaries have been published and are an EXCELLENT primary source of what was happening during the overthrow. “was found in 1993 hidden under the float boards of her palace on Oahu that started the sovereign movement.” Uuuh nooo.. it’s hard to know when “the movement” started because this belligerent, prolonged occupation has always come against resistance. The renaissance of 1993 came about because it was 100 years from the overthrow and Clinton signed the (bs) apology bill, leading to the (bs) Akaka bill. If you look it up, Liliu’s diaries were turned over to the Territory 4 yrs after her death, and were sitting in the State Archives. What I’ve learned about the HSA is there’s an allotted time that needs to pass before artifacts/articles can be released to or viewed by the general public

Literally! I've started travelling around on google maps.. I'll drop my pin and walk around baha. Just doing that makes me so curious about the history of where I dropped my pin. Generally forcing me to research further! I'm currently trying to educate myself on my Ukranian Ancestory! I just feel with technology advancements and an attitude like Bailey's... The history of Hawaiʻi is dark and still a very sensitive subject to natives. From a kānaka maoli, one of the most important things to remember when visiting Hawaiʻi is to just be respectful. Respect the land, the people, and the culture. If you’re self aware and appreciative, the locals will love you back hundredfold and treat you like family. They’re quick to love but quick to check you too 😂🤙🏼

@Al Stewart I personally would go visit museums dedicated to that sort of thing. I first learned about the history at a museum on Maui. The curators will likely be happy to answer any questions.

I was born and raised in Honolulu, they incorporate all of the true history and cultural learning/language experiences within our education. As a "non native" it shaped me into a worldy individual. It sparked my interest in history at a young age. Hawaii is truly a magical place. Respect to the islands.

It beginning to sound to me like the US is really lacking in the History area period. I’m from a medium size town, we had decent teachers. But, they seriously had the most old, disgusting and boring old men teaching history in middle and high schools. I turned 5 in 1959. In first grade, I remember what a big deal it was that Hawaii became our 50th state, right behind Alaska. I have lived thru some interesting times, as all generations do. I couldn't have handled some of these awful truths as a child. As an adult, I feel a responsibility to the truth, no matter where it leads. Thank you for delivering it in such an entertaining fashion. It kept my attention!
They basically killed queen Liliuokalani locking her in her palace because she didn’t want to sign Hawaii away. She was a smart woman and saw through them. I’m truly sorry what they did to Hawaiians.

There is a movie called 'the new world' (I think) that is about Pocahontas and left me truly devastated after watching it. I didn't know the story before and had no idea it was so tragic for her. It's a great movie that I recommend to everybody.
It saddens me how much damage the era of colonization did to so many Pacific and Caribbean islands; they were so vibrant and rich with culture just for it to be exploited. All for the sake of financial and personal gain, too. I can't help but wonder what islands like Hawa'i, Puerto Rico, Samoa, and the Marshall Islands would be like without such interference; no doubt they would be so much more different.
I keep stressing that we support these kind of channels to the fullest. Certain pieces of history are secret for REASONS; Bailey I really wish you protection and health, very powerful people want to keep the common folk oblivious to the past.

as a native Hawaiian, I’m so happy to see this video! thank you Bailey for spreading the truth of what happened to the kingdom. unlike other states where the history of that territory is taught, our public school system here completely omits this part of Hawaii’s history. beyond that, even the most “progressive” history textbooks only include a vague, three-sentence summary of the crimes that were committed against our people and government. if anyone would like further reading, my two favorite documents are the kū’ē petitions as well as another document that I can’t remember the name of (believed to be written by Joseph Nāwahī) which calls the insurgents “common pirates.” roast of the century.
As a native in Oklahoma, I just want to add that our history is extremely passed over as well. Oklahoma history is even a requirement, but they ignored all the colonialism. Oklahoma was supposed to be native land after the Trail of Tears, yet schools here still celebrate a “pioneer day” where kids dress as settlers and stake claim to land. This is why CRT is important, everything has been completely bleached. This video was extremely well done though and I learned so much about Hawaii. Probably my favorite video by Bailey.
I went to Hawaii recently for my birthday and went to the Polynesian cultural center, and although I lived there as a kid, it was in that experience that I learned basically how Hawaii was colonized and stolen like well… all of America. As a black woman I definitely felt saddened by the history and now them practicing their culture as a tourist act/ attraction for the likely descendants of these colonizers. I also felt that natives receiving little back from their stolen land, again not a surprise. It definitely changed the mood of what we were suppose to experience as paradise.

YES! As a Kanaka Maoli, thank you so much for covering this! My family and I have been priced out of our home and have to live on the mainland now. My extended family are muti-generational households to be able to afford to live at home. Plus the mass amounts of temporary housing leaves us with EXTREMELY limited permanent housing, and that is only IF you can afford it.
That's what happened to my husband too. He's a native Hawaiian, his family had to leave Hawaii as a teen because they couldn't afford to live there anymore. It kills him that our kids won't get to grow up on the land they belong on. There's a huge Hawaiian population here in Washington that all had to leave for the same reason. People look at Hawaiis story as history but it's not, it's still happening.

History books in other parts of the United States barely even cover this. Hawaiian culture is their religion that is shown in the form of dance, and the land is sacred. Very similar to the Native Americans and their culture. There are still many of those who perpetuate our culture everyday, all around the world spreading our stories through Hula. I cannot stress how important it is to recognize the dying of the Hawaiian race. Ni’ihau is the only island left with pure native Hawaiians, but a lot of them flee to Kaua’i. Your effort in pronouncing the Hawaiian names correctly didn’t go unnoticed. I’ve been watching you for years and I know how you stumble but you took your time, and it means a lot. Mahalo for making those who are Hawaiian, even partly Hawaiian, feel seen. ❤️

I suggested this a while ago so first and foremost THANK YOU!! Awareness is everything! We are in times where native hawaiians are learning and doing research finding out they are entitled to land as heirs, this land cannot be bought, transferred or sold only passed down to blood heirs. But because of the US government forcing laws people that purchase that lands assume they own the land but really they dont. Native hawaiians are coming out of the woodworks occupying their land under Hawaiian Monarchy law and fighting for what is rightfully theirs. So again THANK YOU BAILEY! For those of you wanting to learn more about this and how Hawai'i was taken by the U.S., look up the events surrounding the Great Māhele, the Reciprocity Treaty, the Bayonet Constitution, and the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. Also Lorrin Thurston was a big villain in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. I work at a Hawaiian Immersion school on Oahu and it's something we teach in Hawaiian History every year. It eventually leads all the way to Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Hey, I also heard that, currently, the navy is dumping some kind of waste into Hawaiian water supply and natives have been protesting for them to leave because it’s basically poisoning them. I know I’m not explaining this well, but this is a big problem.
Hi! Actually what happened is that there’s a military owned and operated fuel tank that leaked into the water supply system & the federal government is sueing the state for trying to fix it. The school I’m at hasn’t had running water in 2 months which is even more awful considering we are still in a pandemic & the children cannot effectively wash their hands. Yes, it’s true. The U.S. Navy placed their fuel tanks right above a source of water. Now, the people are sick, displaced, and the US Navy, refuses to shut down their fuel tanks which are leaking into the public’s water. UNREAL!

Queen Liliuokalani is a name i have never forgot. When I found out about this in history I was so infuriated with the American government, specifically Sanford Dole, that dude deserves no type of pedestal.

I learned this in my school too in Eastern Washington. Small town school. It really concerns me how many American people didn't learn this in US history. I even remember my teacher saying we need to give back their islands.

Went to Hawaii last year and learned about this while listening to the narrator on the road to Hanna; my family and I were absolutely shocked to hear about how the United States acquired Hawaii, Just like the Natives on the "Main Land" horrible history of how we came about, but then I learned about England's history and came to the conclusion that unfortunately there can nothing the indigenous people can do about it. It is all very sad, unfair and unjust. We never heard about this in school that's for sure! Thank you Bailey on teaching us all this dark history,. If my kids weren't grown I would make them watch you for history, you would most definitely be the, coolest and informed, truthful history teacher! Keep up the awesome work!

I remembered asking my teacher “when will we cover the history of Hawaii?” My teacher responded “we’re skipping right over that chapter”. And if visiting Hawaii, I highly recommend in addition to respecting the islands and people, try visiting Hawaiian heritage sites. At the very least the ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu is easily accessible and very inexpensive to tour, and a truly moving experience.

Iʻm half Hawaiian, live in Hawaiʻi and am terrorized on a regular basis. Most of the people in Honolulu are not Hawaiian and donʻt care about our culture at all. Except when Mauna Kea got international press and then they all put "we stand with mauna kea" stickers on their social media pictures.
My husband is Hapa Hoale, his mother’s side is/was there. He’s currently landlocked, but wants to go back next year. I’m learning the history, customs, and as time goes on, more and more recipes (his late and wonderful mother left her recipe books to the kids) and if we stay stateside, I want to open up a Hawaiian bakery and possibly a small specialty restaurant with foods that the other places don’t do. Though I’m told that Las Vegas is so occupied by Hawaiians that it’s called the 9th island. 🤷🏻♀️ What I’m saying is that if a person is going to travel to somewhere that different, they SHOULD learn about the place and their customs, culture, and respect the people. @@meltingpointcreations1457 as someone born and raised in Hawaii, but is not a Hawaiian herself, I think the main thing to understand is that it is your ‘kuleana’ or responsibility to learn Hawaiian culture before you plan your visit. It is not on the locals or kanaka maoli (meaning native Hawaiian) to teach you about a land that was stolen from them and their ancestors. Many native Hawaiians struggle to keep their land due to colonization. Native Hawaiians can’t even afford their own land. And it’s not about money for kanaka Maoli, the land or ‘āina(land and sea) holds a cultural history that is not taught to mainstream Americans. It’s about a deep connection to the land, spirits and ancestors. Hawaii’s economy as it stands today does rely on tourism (even tho kanaka maoli knew how to sustain themselves off of the land in the first place), but there is a way to travel correctly! Especially in a place as magical as Hawaii. But that magic does not belong you, it belongs to the Hawaiians who have always felt the spirit and taken care of THEIR home

from a Kānaka Maoli/ Native Hawaiian women I thank you so much Bailey for sharing our dark history. 💕 my great grandmother was chained to her house by white soldiers and whipped for speaking Ōlelo Hawai’i. Other were tortured and killed and so many people don’t know this. It’s saddening me and it’s heartbreaking that so much stories are forgotten. the trauma our ancestor went thru is indescribable.
Same with my family, coming from the Dakota Mdewkanton. Our histories are much the same, as my grandmother was the first generation to be removed from her family and forced into Indian Schools. They were also beaten into submission. My grandmother couldn’t speak English, and was chained to a radiator heater in an attic for two days with no food or water for speaking her native language, when she was 6 years old! This was the common practice of acculturation and assimilation. It was either this, or genocide. We also should not be a part of the USA. This is colonization of the planet, and all tribal indigenous people and societies, with dependent, agricultural-urbanized, whitewashed, mainstream, status quo humans, and the domestication and farming of animals, that causes these people, who are totally dependent on this food system, to overpopulate, overthrow, and become the dominant paradigm, and the majority population. So, honestly, if you don’t support colonization, from a tribal-indigenous perspective, then you absolutely must boycott, and end all support of the animal agriculture industry worldwide effective immediately! Otherwise, you’re just acculturated, and assimilated, and are whitewashed, just like they are.

Fun fact: Queen Liliuokalanis while held prisoner in her own Palace and forced to sign her country away or suffer the death of her people wrote a diary that was found in 1993 hidden under the float boards of her Palace on Oahu that started the sovereign movement.
That palace is the Iolani Palace and absolutely beautiful.
True - Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned in her own palace and forced to abdicate her throne, to save her people from blood shed.
Her diaries have been published and are an EXCELLENT primary source of what was happening during the overthrow. “was found in 1993 hidden under the float boards of her palace on Oahu that started the sovereign movement.” Uuuh nooo.. it’s hard to know when “the movement” started because this belligerent, prolonged occupation has always come against resistance. The renaissance of 1993 came about because it was 100 years from the overthrow and Clinton signed the (bs) apology bill, leading to the (bs) Akaka bill. If you look it up, Liliu’s diaries were turned over to the Territory 4 yrs after her death, and were sitting in the State Archives. What I’ve learned about the HSA is there’s an allotted time that needs to pass before artifacts/articles can be released to or viewed by the general public

The history of Hawaiʻi is dark and still a very sensitive subject to natives. From a kānaka maoli, one of the most important things to remember when visiting Hawaiʻi is to just be respectful. Respect the land, the people, and the culture. If you’re self aware and appreciative, the locals will love you back hundredfold and treat you like family. They’re quick to love but quick to check you too 😂🤙🏼

I turned 5 in 1959. In first grade, I remember what a big deal it was that Hawaii became our 50th state, right behind Alaska. I have lived thru some interesting times, as all generations do. I couldn't have handled some of these awful truths as a child. As an adult, I feel a responsibility to the truth, no matter where it leads. I protested and donated for Manua kea. I stand with not just Hawaiians but anyone who is being wronged by US. Cause what they have done and are doing, that’s not what I want to be represented as. The sad reality is US isn’t going to just let Hawaii go like that. Just like how they are doing to Puerto Rico and what they did to Marshall Islands. it’s going to take a lot. There is a movie called 'the new world' (I think) that is about Pocahontas and left me truly devastated after watching it. I didn't know the story before and had no idea it was so tragic for her. It's a great movie that I recommend to everybody.

It saddens me how much damage the era of colonization did to so many Pacific and Caribbean islands; they were so vibrant and rich with culture just for it to be exploited. All for the sake of financial and personal gain, too. I can't help but wonder what islands like Hawa'i, Puerto Rico, Samoa, and the Marshall Islands would be like without such interference; no doubt they would be so much more different.
Honestly we destroyed so many ecosystems and it is still happening. We should quit doing that and give the countries to the rightful inhabitants.

as a native Hawaiian, I’m so happy to see this video! thank you Bailey for spreading the truth of what happened to the kingdom. unlike other states where the history of that territory is taught, our public school system here completely omits this part of Hawaii’s history. beyond that, even the most “progressive” history textbooks only include a vague, three-sentence summary of the crimes that were committed against our people and government.
if anyone would like further reading, my two favorite documents are the kū’ē petitions as well as another document that I can’t remember the name of (believed to be written by Joseph Nāwahī) which calls the insurgents “common pirates.” roast of the century.

As a native in Oklahoma, I just want to add that our history is extremely passed over as well. Oklahoma history is even a requirement, but they ignored all the colonialism. Oklahoma was supposed to be native land after the Trail of Tears, yet schools here still celebrate a “pioneer day” where kids dress as settlers and stake claim to land. This is why CRT is important, everything has been completely bleached.

I went to Hawaii recently for my birthday and went to the Polynesian cultural center, and although I lived there as a kid, it was in that experience that I learned basically how Hawaii was colonized and stolen like well… all of America. As a black woman I definitely felt saddened by the history and now them practicing their culture as a tourist act/ attraction for the likely descendants of these colonizers. I also felt that natives receiving little back from their stolen land, again not a surprise. It definitely changed the mood of what we were suppose to experience as paradise.
There’s so much that the US has done to the pacific islands and never have they acknowledged what they’ve done. Especially towards the Hawaiian islands and the Marshall Islands.

YES! As a Kanaka Maoli, thank you so much for covering this! My family and I have been priced out of our home and have to live on the mainland now. My extended family are muti-generational households to be able to afford to live at home. Plus the mass amounts of temporary housing leaves us with EXTREMELY limited permanent housing, and that is only IF you can afford it.
That's what happened to my husband too. He's a native Hawaiian, his family had to leave Hawaii as a teen because they couldn't afford to live there anymore. It kills him that our kids won't get to grow up on the land they belong on. There's a huge Hawaiian population here in Washington that all had to leave for the same reason. People look at Hawaiis story as history but it's not, it's still happening.

History books in other parts of the United States barely even cover this. Hawaiian culture is their religion that is shown in the form of dance, and the land is sacred. Very similar to the Native Americans and their culture. There are still many of those who perpetuate our culture everyday, all around the world spreading our stories through Hula. I cannot stress how important it is to recognize the dying of the Hawaiian race. Ni’ihau is the only island left with pure native Hawaiians, but a lot of them flee to Kaua’i. Your effort in pronouncing the Hawaiian names correctly didn’t go unnoticed. I’ve been watching you for years and I know how you stumble but you took your time, and it means a lot.

We are in times where native hawaiians are learning and doing research finding out they are entitled to land as heirs, this land cannot be bought, transferred or sold only passed down to blood heirs. But because of the US government forcing laws people that purchase that lands assume they own the land but really they dont. Native hawaiians are coming out of the woodworks occupying their land under Hawaiian Monarchy law and fighting for what is rightfully theirs. So again THANK YOU BAILEY! This bring more awareness to the issues of my people MAHALO.

For those of you wanting to learn more about this and how Hawai'i was taken by the U.S., look up the events surrounding the Great Māhele, the Reciprocity Treaty, the Bayonet Constitution, and the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. Also Lorrin Thurston was a big villain in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. I work at a Hawaiian Immersion school on Oahu and it's something we teach in Hawaiian History every year. It eventually leads all the way to Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Hey, I also heard that, currently, the navy is dumping some kind of waste into Hawaiian water supply and natives have been protesting for them to leave because it’s basically poisoning them. I know I’m not explaining this well, but this is a big problem.
Hi! Actually what happened is that there’s a military owned and operated fuel tank that leaked into the water supply system & the federal government is sueing the state for trying to fix it. The school I’m at hasn’t had running water in 2 months which is even more awful considering we are still in a pandemic & the children cannot effectively wash their hands. Yes, it’s true. The U.S. Navy placed their fuel tanks right above a source of water. Now, the people are sick, displaced, and the US Navy, refuses to shut down their fuel tanks which are leaking into the public’s water. UNREAL!

Queen Liliuokalani is a name i have never forgot. When I found out about this in history I was so infuriated with the American government, specifically Sanford Dole, that dude deserves no type of pedestal.
And he got a plantation named after him over in Haliewa that thousands of tourists go to each year. Meanwhile there isn't even a STREET named after Queen Liliuokalani....

Went to Hawaii last year and learned about this while listening to the narrator on the road to Hanna; my family and I were absolutely shocked to hear about how the United States acquired Hawaii, Just like the Natives on the "Main Land" horrible history of how we came about, but then I learned about England's history and came to the conclusion that unfortunately there can nothing the indigenous people can do about it. It is all very sad, unfair and unjust. We never heard about this in school that's for sure!

there are still americans who believe the war of 1812 was a tie. so yeah a lot of the history learned there was a big lie.
Because history is usually taught one sidedly. Even how we view Viking Norsemen, they were barbaric in the eyes of the English so they’re portrayed as barbarians even today, but when England did the same things a few hundred years later, they were “colonisers” 🙄

And if visiting Hawaii, I highly recommend in addition to respecting the islands and people, try visiting Hawaiian heritage sites. At the very least the ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu is easily accessible and very inexpensive to tour, and a truly moving experience.
Considering Hawai’i is not PART of the US but rather illegally OCCUPIED by the US AND that it’s a war crime for an occupying power (in this case the US) to allow its citizens or any other foreigners to even set FOOT in a country it occupies… how about everyone just stay AWAY?!?! Yeah?!

@@cinnawhat8797 I came into undergrad with a bit over a year of credits, did 6-18 credits each summer and then my grad program has a masters as well but it’ll be on the way to the PhD :)

It amazes me but also doesn't surprise me that I never learned this in school. I am so thankful for podcasts. I have learned so freaking much. Even about my own community, the disabled community. I learned so much from Bailey about that a few weeks ago
A couple days ago I went to Hawaii and began learning more about its history, so I started looking it up and went down this rabbit hole of how it came to be a state. I remember thinking to myself, “I hope Bailey covers this for dark history” AND THEN I SEE THIS AHDJDJFFFJFF
