This brings back magic memories. My neighbor would drive us to see pantomimes when we were wee and I went to my first concert there, Elvis Costello & the Attractions.

Wow loved seeing this amazing theatre again.
My mate Alex was a Night watchman there in 1983..His office was just to the right as you enter behind the old box office.
He told myself and other our other mate Stevie some spooky stories about the place and said that it was haunted and he heard lots of weird noises at night.
We didn't believe him so he offered us to spend a "watch" with him one night.
We took him up on his offer and I'll tell you its veryy spooky at night when its empty.
Alex had a German Shepherd that went round with him on his hourly checks
Alex said; "If there is anyone in the building then the dog is trained to alert or attack'
Sometimes the dog would just stop, growl and then turn back.
Alex said; "If the dog doesn't go....we dont go"
Anyway...we went round with him that night and we heard doors swishing open and other weird noises.
WE were the only three people in the building!!!
Sometimes the dog would growl into the dark and then just turn around and come back.
Apparently there was a young guard murdered there back in the day and they reckon he still does his rounds at night.

Fantastic! Can't wait to see Part 2! Again, the history you give combined with your genuine enthusiasm really brings your subject alive. In my head, I could hear Prince Philip saying, "Not ANOTHER bbloody theatre where we can't see a damn thing!" Love the Art Deco touches. Wow!

I met a few famous actors and performers there as it was their watering hole.

If I had seen this video before I wrote "Murder Book" I would have added it, but hey, it's cool. I can add it in another book. It was a GREAT tour, thank you. I am personally very happy to see that they changed the red walls. I never went into the building, but can't imagine it being all red. That would be overwhelming.

love the video its so fascinating to know that's been there for over 90 years i only been there once and it was when they played sesame street in the 1990 which was good cant wait to come back again the place looks absolutely minted and i loved how big the place was its been so long since i have been there you don't realise how bit it is until your actually in there looks small from outside but its massive inside the directors box looks cozy also and another thing i do love old buildings that have the original stuff that hasn't changed cant wait to see part 2

When I first moved to Edinburgh in mid 1975, the band I was in rehearsed in the Playhouse, down back in a dressing room. At the time everything down there was being stripped back to the bare walls. On one occasion we were rehearsing up on the stage when the owner showed up and had a bit of a chat with us. As you mention, that owner had intended to demolish the building and replace it with office space. He was upset that City Council had rejected his bid as he didn't know what to do with the place. So we suggested he open it up to concerts. I gave him two management names to pursue - Brian Lane who handled Yes, and Gordon Mills who had Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck. Almost immediately the bands started to arrive. Yes, big names. I only saw a couple concerts - Tom Petty on his first UK tour (he was opening for Nils Lofgren) and Jackson Browne (a free ticket). I'd rather have seen Jeff Beck, but hey.... Back then the Glasshouse Hotel was a church converted to a carpet shop, while the space occupied by the Omni Centre was a grass covered hill, all the tenements having been demolished as part of the Leith Street rejuvenation fiasco. It's great to see the Playhouse now such a major fixture in the social scene, and with the rejuvenation of the St. James Quarter area, this neighbourhood once again giving folk a reason to come to the city centre's east end.

It's nice to see the old place with a semi-decent colour scheme at long last. And it was this society which got the Preservation Order on the building. Elton John's concert was produced by David Bell for STV - NOT the BBC. Oh so many thngs incorrect in this.......

I remeber when the Playhouse tried to book Frank Sinatra and his fee was a millions for just one hour.
They calculated the cost of tickets by the amount of seats (being sold out) and still couldn't cover his fee.
To cover his fee the tickets would have been SO ridiculously expensive and they had to drop the idea.
I remenber saying at the time..."WHO the hell does he think he is?"
Ok...it's Frank Sinatra but hey!...nobody should be able to command the kind of money that he asked for just one hour.
