  • A project where I had to trace a Font Logo, where the font was not available. It helps to show the Pen, Node, and Corner tools when creating designs that require smooth flowing lines. This is my personal workflow, hope it assists.

    Excellent Job! Maybe the BEST TH-cam training I have EVER watched, good sound, clear voice, good pacing, nice comments about different ways of doing the same processes. Thank you so much!

    Been using Affinity Designer for a while, and this is one of the more useful videos I’ve seen (in terms of understanding workflow)! Thank you!

    Recently Covided out of job and looking for a vector tool without signing my soul over to the devil. Finding Affinity D amazing. Some great tuts for AD out there but yours super easy to follow, no fluff, very pro. Thanks RT!

    Rory, a big thanks from Scotland on releasing an excellent, easy to follow tutorial on the pen tool.
    Where others might have left us baffled by talk of beziers, vector paths and fancy maths, you just cut to the chase by presenting a problem and then introducing the best solution: the pen tool.

    Great tutorial, I might make one suggestion though . Instead of using strokes I like to fill in the curve with a bright colour but turn down the opacity, that way you can always see the image you are tracing and you can be more accurate with your paths.
    I really liked your method of using the corner tool instead of fiddling with the nodes, definitely going to do that in the future.

    Thank you Rory, a really clear & informative video. I love your voice, and I had a couple of 'lightbulb' moments watching that! So much better than anything else I've seen, including Affinity themselves (especially now the programs' help files are hard to read and to follow, such a shame after the Serif ones were great). Thank you!!

    Instead of moving the line to see what's behind it, you could have created a layer and lines whose opacity is 50% or less. Then the underlying black letters would show through.

      Agreed! As I'm new to AD (just got the trio of programs from Affinity last week) and come from Adobe Illustrator (used it for over 20 years but totally not a fan of their subscription model), I've had to redraw logos and text a lot for the tradeshow industry. Not sure if AD has an option of making a template layer like AI does, where you could lock the layer and also lower the opacity. Overall, however, this is a fantastic tutorial and I take my hat off to Rory! =)

    I like Affinity Designer but in this day and age this software should have an auto trace feature like illustrator or Free inkscape. Also AD is seriously lacking in some basic perspective warp tools. If you were to build that bulge text in AD you would spend far more time doing it manually while other software could do it in seconds.

    • @unabashedindividualist6232
      @unabashedindividualist6232 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Affinity Photo has perspective warp, Live trace is for wusses.

    • @AI3Dorinte
      @AI3Dorinte 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@unabashedindividualist6232 it does help sometimes, but it isn't critical

    • @helenobaya7824
      @helenobaya7824 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It totally is critical in a design context. If someone says an auto tracer is not critical to efficient designing they aren't doing it professionally.

      Affinity does amazing stuff for the price, also keeping in mind that they are currently in version 1. I can't wait to see what will happen with version 2 in the future. Sure, some stuff takes a little bit longer, but for the price it is a great piece of software and since the most 1.8 update is slowly getting closer to Illustrator in terms of functionality

    Doesn't Designer have an automatic trace feature like Inkscape? (Trace Bitmap) I purchased Affinity Photo for my raster graphics needs and am new to vector graphics and how to not think in layers as much. The logical choice for consistency with Photo is Designer. Being able to automatically trace an image allows me to focus on the program and learn the features and develop my skills so that I can trace as good as many people who have been doing it got years. Currently it's frustrating to try and trace and very slow.

    • @ChristopherHero
      @ChristopherHero 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it's on their product roadmap, but no not yet. As Rory was saying, he doesn't want to use auto-trace from any program for a piece like this where he needs precision and clean lines. This also prevents any need for post-processing to clean up points/paths.

    • @daddy3d1972
      @daddy3d1972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How many years has it been on that roadmap? Too many.

    • @ChristopherHero
      @ChristopherHero 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      daddy3d1972 agreed. It's not a nice to have. It's a required aspect of mine and most other designers' workflows that I know

    Why not you lock image to trace better like in adobe illustrator you place image and make it locked templete layer , so you can easily see image edges in outline mode as well
