    That V8 sounds so muscular, but you can also shut it up just by switching to Comfort or ECO... that is versatility. What an amazing Bimmer.

    I just traded in my M5 for one of these. Its a far superior drive in my
    opinion. Its my daily driver. Highly highly recommended.

    The M550i is currently my favorite BMW in the lineup and is most likely the next BMW I plan on owning as I currently own an X5 xDrive50ibut however don’t plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. So the current M550i you’re getting 85% of the power the M5 is getting but is still a more comfortable car. The M550i is the best middle ground you can have in a BMW.

    Later model bmws have a great sport/comfort difference, some vehicles u hardly see or feel a difference in the 2 modes, but my x5 m50i literally transforms from comfort to sport plus, whole different feel. I’ve started really liking bmws again, so I have 3 now :)

    I’ve got a 2018 M550. Amazing bang for the buck. It’s not an M5, but for daily driving it is plenty fast.

    The m performance models were made to give the customer a middle ground, not to aggressive, but faster and more features then a base. I had a x5m, drove very harsh, too stiff for everyday use, it was a 2018 model, now I picked up a few daily’s like a 2019 x3 m40i and a 20 x5 m50i, the b58 and n63 platforms love tunes and boost, getting both my SUVs tuned to give it a bit more punch, 100whp punch lol but yea I love them.

    I did buy the 550i xDrive fully loaded this summer and very satisfied specially with the comfort mode thats missing i the stiff M5. Specially living in Stockholm and its traffic…

    I keep reading all over TH-cam that the M550 is better than the M5 because of the ride (daily driver) and value.
    If you looking for a better ride then yes; you should go with the M550. "True" M cars are not going to ever drive like a Lexus - period.
    Simply put, the M550 is a 5 series with the larger V8 engine as with all of BMW's M performance line vehicles, (example M340, M440 are 6 cyls engines AKA 340 and 440 instead of 4 cyl).
    BMW's Marketing team is great at slapping "M" on their cars to sell them.
    As for value, the M550 is not cheap $77k starting price vs M5 $104K for a difference of $27k.
    I heard a bunch of talk on the Net of just chiping , changing brakes and etc on a M550 and it would be just as good as a M5. If you believe that then you never own a M5.
    By the time someone performs all of the mods, the price difference would shrink and would make sense to just buy the M5. It's true you can chip the M550 to get the same HP as a M5; however, the M550 will not come close in the handling dept. and besides, M5s can be chip too. In addition, the engines are different internally (M550 uses N63 engine vs M5 S63). The S63 have better engine parts to handle track use.
    Last, M550 is a great car, I know because I just upgraded my M550 to a M5 Comp. It all depends on if you're looking for more luxury or more performance.
    Note: I have heard the pre LCI M5 Comp drove harshly. For '21 and newer (LCI) M5s, BMW is now using M8's suspension on the M5s. I can not verify how bad pre lci M5 comp drove since I never drove one; however, I can confirm the LCI M5s can easily be driven as a daily driver.

      I just got a m550. I dont see why I need a m5. I rarely push pedal all the way.

      You are right, you can't push a M5 pedal (nor a M550) all the way down (at least not for long). However, when I do push the M5 pedal down; it brings a big smile to my face and it's worth every cent.
      Also, my M5 handles better than my previous M550 which, is to be expected.
      I disagree with a lot of TH-camrs that are saying that the M550 is a better value than a M5. Most of the people who comes to this conclusion only sees the differences in HP and 0-60 times and not the differences in the engines (N63 vs S63), underpinnings and other items.
      The M550 and M5 were designed for different people's driving priority (luxury vs track focus).
      Last, there is no value in a $80k+ or $100k+ car. If someone is looking for value; may I recommend a Honda Civic (which is a great car in its own right.
      i brought one for my daughter) ☺

      Visely sad, but really what you get depends on the market , cars in Eu are expensive where i live the m550i well build about 115000 euros the M5 comp 155000 and thats a big difference.

    I thought the same thing until I drove a non-Competition M5. If you have the money it is a no brainer. The M550i is amazing but the M5 is on another level and does not beat you up. If the M5 is just too much, get the 540i, it’s plenty fast and very economical.

    Oedered a 22, got a 23 in Adventurin red. Fantastic car. The only issues are that I eas hoping that the red would be brighter ( it's really maroon) and I hate,hate hate these effing run flat tires.
    BTW, if you get run flats definitely get the tire snd wheel protection package;you will need it.

      Agreed I wish they had a REAL red color, and the one you mentioned does look like a maroon, not a fan. I would always highly recommend the wheel and tire, esp if you have a vehicle with the m-sport package.

    Everyone seems to be in the majority the M550i is more fun and a great daily car over the M5. I have had both and the M5 is pleasure for the bystanders however the M550i is delightful for the driver! 😊

    M550i is a great deal. In 2007 I bought a 550i that was loaded to the bones except one or two options… the msrp on it was $80,295. Back then you didn’t even get an M5 style body kit. The 550i looked identical to all the 5 series. The only tell was the wheels that the 535i sport later got and the badge. I upgraded to a 2010 which was the lci e60 550i and that one finally had an M5 body kit. Oddly the e39 had the same thing but the last year of production 2003 540i sport models got an m5 style body kit.

    I had a M550 two years ago and this year upgraded before the Chip shortage for the 2022 M5 Competition. While the M550i is a great car, and I would recommend but I love the M5. It is a great daily driver here in Maryland with our crazy traffic. The seats are amazing also in the M5. The styling of the M5 looks better too. Great review however!!!

    Ultimately it depends on where you live and how much your backside is going to get ravaged by the insane taxes. In my country a m550i starts from ~130k, while an m5 starts from ~180k and add like ~15k more for the competition package. Add to that a few extra options and the price increases by 20k. So essentially the m550i will cost you ~150k and the m5 competition ~220k. 220k is basically 911 turbo s money in the US.

    Easier way to tell the difference between M550i from the 40i is that the 50 has no fogs

    Only reason why i would go for 540 over 550i is B58. Im afraid od reliability and possible costs down the road coz of hot V8

    I switched from a pre LCI m550 to an LCI m5 comp, and honestly for me it’s not even close. The m550 is fine, but the m5 is on a completely different level

      I will say the m550i has more consistent pops and bangs, the M5 also has less of them but it sounds more like fireworks going off when it does pop. LOL

    people say m550i is poor M5 or for poor people. The truth is people chose it over M5 because it's MORE COMFORTABLE. It's not a wheelbarrow like M5 or M3 ;D Personally, I would chose m550i with the most comfy setting (adaptive suspension)

      Great Point Kuba. Yes I can see how people would call it that, but honestly the M550i serves it's purpose perfectly. It's an amazing balanced car more so than the M5. Perfect for daily drives, and when you do want to have that fun, the M550i will still get the job done!

    So your reasoning with the wheels being bigger is a false narrative. I optioned my 21’ M550i with 19’s and All season tires since I live in NYC. You can option a 540i with the same 19’s as my vehicle comes with. Also, currently not only will you not a get a discount for an M550i, you’ll be hard pressed to find one! Dealers don’t have any units, which means there is 0 incentive to discount them

      M550i has had a ton of issues in their last generation. Many of those bugs were sorted out now. I would imagine that sales on the 50i engine will be going up soon!

    I chose the M5 over this one 2021. thank god I did if you want a true experience M5 all the way!! plus if you have money for m550 you have money for an m5 worth every penny car is sick and leave with your hands shaking every time your done driving it !

      In Australia we have bad roads and high car tax, m550i is the pick for comfort and price. $174,000 m550i vs $274,000 m5. M5 is way overpriced in Oz. My m550i is in production now. Can’t wait ;)

    this guy’s reasoning is trash. this video should’ve been titled “if you don’t wanna spend M5 money the M550i is a good choice” if you can afford an M5 there is no reason to look back at an M550i. just so nobody gets me wrong, the M550i is a beast of a car and a good price for what you’re getting but let’s be real people. the only draw back is the M5 (especially with the competition package) suspension is a bit more stiff for the track/canyon capability. it’s only slightly noticeable and you get a monster of an engine and several more perks. to be honest, the 2 shouldn’t even be compared to one another. they are in 2 different leagues
