  • Here is a good practice when adding salt to your water softener. This is how you break up and avoid a salt bridge.

    That is exactly what I need to know. Thank you for the help.

    Overloading the salt like you did almost guarantees formation of a salt bridge. Maximum fill should be 1/2 the tank.

      Correct. He needs to retitle the video, "How to add salt to your water softener and create a salt bridge". There was no evidence that he needed one bag, much less three.

      Entirely based on the climate you live in. I’ve not had a problem with a salt bridge in Arizona. My friend in Idaho has however. I top mine off once a year with no issues.

    • @ke0nc
      @ke0nc 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PilotJon Dry locales certainly have less issues. For humid locales or basements, simply keeping the salt above the water level is a great preventative. No loading salt up to the top.

      @@ke0nc I have no idea how to run these things. So I just add salt to the top of the water line in the tank?

    • @ke0nc
      @ke0nc 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kellytodalen6376 Anytime you happen to be by the softener, take a look in the brine tank. If you see that the water level is higher than the salt level, add a bag of salt. If it's not enough, add another. Eventually you will get an idea of how often salt needs to be added, and you won't have to watch it as closely.

    Supposed to add more salt if there’s water on top correct? Does adding all this salt make the water softer?

    Thanks for the video. We just bought a house with a water softener and I have like 6 days to go get some salt

    Does your tank (where the salt is at) usually have water in it? I just want to compare and make sure I installed mines correctly I added the 3 gallons of water like the manual said to.

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      every system is different. For mine you typically cannot see the water in the brine tank unless it is in a cycle.

    • @TheSkystrider
      @TheSkystrider 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way all of these work is you add salt once you see water. 3 gallons of water to start according to manual. I suspect he doesn't have enough water in his, in the video. I don't think it will work unless enough water is absorbing salt. I don't yet know if there ever comes a time when we need to add more water.

    • @roytsusui1761

      @@TheSkystrider it depends on the water softener model, basically the same principal.

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question- in Arizona, I'm able to fill it to the top each time. I think the fill level would matter with relative humidity really. if its really humid, I probably wouldnt go over 50% full

    How often do you have to add new salt in a water softener? I love that dog! ❤️🐾🐕

      @PilotJon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gage Johnson Marley is AMAZING!! He’s a cavalier King Charles. I am alone at my house and travel often so my water usage is very low. I can probably go a year easy but I check the usage and levels probably a few times a month out of habit and to make sure everything is working properly

      Thanks for the tips! I am a very big dog lover! I love German Shepherds and all other dog breeds! Dogs are awesome and it’s nice to have a companion! By the way, I received my Frigidaire Air Fry Range yesterday. I love the looks of it and I love the front controls. I haven’t air fried yet. I just used the oven once to warm up some dinner rolls but I can’t wait to explore it more! By the way, those little rubber strips above the door, the salesman told me a lot of people hate them and just pull them off and I pulled mine off and my door feels much more smooth! There is now just staples there and eventually I will remove them too but it’s not a problem because you can’t really see them. How do you like your Air Fry Range?

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gage Johnson oh you’re awesome! Yeah I will never have a different breed of dog if it’s my choice.. I like most but Marley is amazing! I still haven’t settled in and tried the air fry... sorry!!! I just never cook but I can’t have a kitchen without an oven. Let me know how yours goes? My daughter LOVES her air fryer

      Sound awesome! So far, everything has been great. I was a little worried about how loud the fans would be but there not very loud at all! Some people complained about the convection fan being noisy but mine isn’t. Especially when compared to my old oven which was very loud! I hope you have a great experience with yours!

    I have a question. I cant seen to find what goes into the softner tube. Is it a special liquid, and when is it added?

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. The only thing added is water and salt. Together they make "brine" super salty water- That is what eventually goes into the smaller tube. You usually add 1-2 gallons of clean water to the salt tank when installing and first start up.

    Hey Jon - I see you still are. using a 5. gallon bucket next to your softener. - any problems with it over flowing?? LMK asap please as I'm not close to a drain either- thanks Buddy!

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Prentice! I use the 5 gallon bucket for the overflow only. There is a pressure discharge that will empty gallons and gallons- so you’ll need to run a hose to a drain somehow. I ended up going straight through my wall and into the laundry room sink. It is a pressure line so a little elevation increase is ok- avoid it as much as possible. Thanks for watching!

    • @prenticelennon1510
      @prenticelennon1510 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much. I learned the hard way last night as I temporarily put the discharge hose into a sink and woke up to a flooded sink with water all over the floor. I'm glad you told me what to do - I'll run an extra long hose into the washing machine drain!

    Hi, do you know why my plumber would suggest i only add enough salt to the point where i still see some water? I know my water softening equipment looks different, possibly older than yours.

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah great question! water softeners work off of a siphon, you dont need a lot of water for it to work. whatever you start with in the tank, it will refill to. mine only needs about a gallon or two to function properly.

      It’s because the salt above the water point will become slightly wet and then harden and will create a bridge, this guy didn’t actually poke it hard enough, ours was filled to the top and had a bridge for over 6months before we realized it hadn’t gone down at all and I poked it and splash anyways it’s just easier to fill it frequently then have to smash a salt bridge ever week
