Thank you for explaining in the simplest terms. I bought a home with a water softener, & have read the instructions, plus watched countless videos, only to feel more confused. I stumbled onto your video, when asking a different question, & you've answered my questions...finally, someone who realizes everyone doesn't know the terms, when it comes to softeners!
Reminds me of a plumber joke..."Young rookie kid was starting his first job as a plumber and he asked the foreman for some advice on how to be a good plumber. The foreman looked at him and said "Well the best advice I can give you is to remember that payday is on Thursday and shi$ always runs downhill".
Pentair Fleck 5600 service manual: Lots of details about installation and how to repair but not a single word for the end user ! For example, when to add salt! Thanks for doing Pentair's job.
Thank you! Mine did the bridge thing you spoke of! It always looked filled but I scooped it out and sure enough 10 inch's in, it was all clay like and crystalized!!!! Thank you!
Good video! Please speak to the problem of "salt mushing" in the brine tank. I recently found this with my softener. Had to vacuum out the water, scoop out all sludge and remaining salt, clean the brine tank and prefill with some water and NEW salt, now regenerating properly again.
Interesting. You mentioned you never want to let the salt run out, and I confess I've _purposely_ done that sometimes because the water just gets annoyingly--sometimes dangerously--slippery! In the shower or when washing dishes it's an accident waiting to happen. Am I doing some kind of damage by letting the salt run out, either to my health (in terms of drinking the water) or to my equipment? Does that cause the chemicals in the other tank to be used up faster?
Ive had my salt tank for 20 years and it holds 320 # when its full. My whole experience is fill it to the brim and be done with it for about 2 months than check it. I have never experienced a salt bridge/block. Knock on wood, I guess Ive been lucky.
Don’t confuse a brine tank with the salt tank. Older models, there is a brine tank and a salt hopper / tank where the salt sits until it’s used during regeneration and flushed out the brine. Brine tanks have beads that take hardness out of water and salt cleans it out. If you have a separate tank for salt, you most certainly can fill to top
What if my softener doesn’t have water to start? Sorry just bought my house and noticed it’s empty so I filled it and nothing has moved. I stir it every few days to make sure it didn’t solidify.
If you have a water softener system like the one in the video, with twin softeners & a brine tank and no pre-filter, what else do you have to do to maintain it besides adding salt? It seems like the video, at the end, suggests there is nothing else you have to do as long as the system seems to continue to work, is that right?
I have a rheem and I filled it all the way for the first time on display u input what level the salt is at idk should I not do this normally 2 bags this time 4 bags?
What if brine well has standing water higher than the water in the brine tank? Do it just needs more salt or is there more I need to do? Thanks in advance.
My Morrison Extreme Series all in one filled with water about 12” above the salt. I didn’t know what to do, so I removed the water down to the salt level and added some more salt😮
I have a Fleck 5600 mechanical. My 33 inch brine tank is always 3/4 full of water. Salt is always below water. Could it be that my tank is filling with too much water?
If this is a new development, it could be that the internal stacks and seals are bad and not properly shutting down the brine fill sequence. If it's always done this, then it might be the brine fill sequence compared to the brine tank size that is making that happen, which would be perfectly fine. If it is something you are concerned about, it would be worth having a technician out to take a look at it.
@@proskillservices1196 I kinda messed up haven't been keeping up with the salt I have a small filtration system but now no water is coming out of the filtration pipe did I mess up the filter ?
I moved into a house with a softner system and bought one 40 lbs bag of Morton Pure and Natural crystals. They are smaller than the salt chunks in the video and seem to dissolve fast. Anyways, according to the bag, its says for a family of 4 add 3 bags every two months and family of 6 add 4 bags every two months. Thats a lot of lot and will be way above the water line.. am I missing something?
You are missing something. Don't read bags. Just use common sense. Much cheaper that way in the long run. And keep watching videos like these to help you.
I moved into a new place(In the country / well water) and was wondering how to fill the tank as well. The salt tank if fairly big, and had about 6 inches of water, with just a little salt.(It had some salt in it before I moved in) It needed about 2 bags of salt and covered the water level. The thing is with water softeners, isn't the water level supposed to be about half way, to 3/4 of the way to the top once you add the salt? I can't find a manual for the tank so I'm really confused on what to do. If feels like somethings wrong considering how little water it had in it to begin with. Hoping someone with experience can say if this is normal or not. Thanks
not exactly. The important thing I have experienced over the last 35 yrs of home ownership with softener tanks (am on my 3rd softner system)while using salt pellets is as follows… • always sift your pellets before adding them to the tank. why? because there is on average 1 - 2 pounds of fine salt dust in each 40 pound bag and this dust crystallizes into a hard cake layer or bridging. if not able to sift with a sifting jig, then i would painstakingly hand lift, slowly enough to allow the dust to fall back into the bag, handfuls at a time out of the bags when installing salt pellets. This greatly reduces the bridging that occurs. That fine dust loves to turn into a quasi sedimentary rock hard salt layer at the bottom of the tank. • once every 1-2 yrs allow you salt level inside your salt tank to fall to about only 20 percent capacity or less. Then, empty your little remaining salt onto a large heavy flat piece of corrugated carton outdoors somewhere safe (away from any landscaping) and allow it to dry thoroughly. You can reuse any pellets that are in this clean out’ by rinsing these with a garden hose if you wish. Or these can be up cycled as a salt lick fodder for wildlife, used for de-icing in Winter thick ice hazards or even used to kill the stumps of brush cuttings. Do not apply around anything green that you do not want to kill; the salt will continue to contaminate soils and kill gardening and landscaping for several seasons, following, so be careful in this up-cycle use to not kill anything you don’t want to die. • while you are at the task of cleaning your salt tank out, take time to clean your softner stainer screens and inlet fittings, “0” rings, etc. • so if you follow the above method, you can keep you salt tank filled between 50% & brim full without the worry of bridging in the shorter, 1-2 yr term.
Although It will loose you jobs coming and cleaning out the salt once a year from the salt bridge and the dead salt that ends up plunging up the regeneration process :-(
Hi. Is the water softener sound in this video a sign that I need to get a new unit or I can fix it (but how?) th-cam.com/video/AWP-StYtgO4/w-d-xo.html Thanks.
🤦🏻♂️ I wish someone would have told me not to fill the salt up to the top when I bought the system..........FIVE YEARS AGO! It’s worked fine until the water burst out the pipe inside the dry wall the other day. I hope they fixed it right. What a situation that was. 😕

Another Question, What happens if you're running low on salt and you see a little Light Brown ?
Do we just Ignore the Color and Refill the Salt or ?
Thanks for the Information.
I have a question, after filling up the two salt bags into the tank, should I do something else with the buttons?

Just bought a home with a well with aquasure softener. Now does this go for the diamond solar salts too? The smaller kind? Above the water?

Question. Do you know why I wouldn’t be getting water from my faucet??
He's absolutey right about the amount of salt to add and salt bridging. Never add too much salt.
Very helpful. Thanks !

What if brine well has standing water higher than the water in the brine tank? Do it just needs more salt or is there more I need to do? Thanks in advance.
Check your discharge hose. Make sure nothing is blocking it off or its frozen.
Is it a good idea to clean the sediment outta the bottom of the brine tanks every now and then?
It can clog things up inside, brine float etc..
Should there be a lid on the bottom of the brine tank

So what if your system ran out of salt, I have a new home and not sure but I think I’ve ran my system about a week without salt 🙈

how much salt is supposed to be in there anyway? half? 3/4?
