You need to attend or enroll in artistic gymnastics judging course..the 0.2 deduction come from her “leg separation” during her take off from the spring board..the rest is perfect! Judges were right😊
Maroneys vault deserves to be in a museum of some sort. It’s a true masterpiece of her dedication and talent that we likely won’t see again in some time. Yes, I think there are a lot of other great all-around gymnasts that vault well. But to me she’s one of the best vaulters that has ever competed on the US Olympic team.
I think the only one who will come close is going to be Simone Biles whenever she eventually sticks her current vault (I forget the name, I have to look it up). The one where she needed her coach on the landing mat the first few competitions she performed it.
my favorite part is how there's screaming and cheering when she's preparing and running, but when she blocks off the table there's just silence, and then the crowd literally ROARS.
I was literally sick to my stomach when she fell on her second vault, in the event finals. But still, how incredible is she to still win a silver medal, on vault, WITH A FALL??
+Irishman 88 Yes. It was a complete fluke. She knew it was a huge mistake. Izbasa was a very gracious winner, though. She knew she only won because Maroney fell.
+EdGringo78 I think she even acknowledged as much. it led to that "not inpressed" face that led to her getting a licture with Obama and becoming the darling on Instagram, so it worked out. Probably the best vaulter EVER honestly.
+Irishman 88 I couldn't agree more. She was just SO dominant, and I think the pressure may have gotten to her a little. I just hope the same doesn't happen to Simone Biles in the all around. She's in a similar situation.
I think this is also a classic case of don't count your chicks before they hatch. All it takes is a fall on the beam and a fall on the bars for Biles to lose her presumptive title.
"It can be so frustrating to watch gymnastics sometimes because it is so subjective and it involves so many opinions, but just sit back and watch, and when you see greatness...you will know it."
2010: 16.100 (junior) 2011: 16.100 2012: 16.233 2013: 16.000 It is so crazy to think that Mckayla has had the highest score on any apparatus in the WORLD, for the past 3 years! To me she's one of the best gymnasts of all time.
Besides It's not fair to compare the capability of scoring in any app, Vault is the app that gives the highest scores while floor always take away many deductions giving the lowest scores.
Mausolo M well, deductions are deductions so... Mckayla is perfect on vault. Gymnasts can be perfect on beam and floor too, they just happen to not be ;)
I know that "her toes are a little crossed" and maybe "she was a little unbalanced on the landing" but honestly in my opinion that shouldn't matter at that point. No female gymnast has EVER done that vault so well. And my thing is, watching Simone at trials recently, how did she only get ONE TENTH off (for that hop, which says the rest of her vault was perfect), when this vault is clearly better than Simone's and receives almost THREE? That's what's ridiculous to me. McKayla *might* have deserved a tenth, but most certainly not .267- no way. And p.s. I absolutely adore Simone and she's a beyond magnificent gymnast, best there's ever been, but I still think McKayla was a better vaulter, don't kill me for it.
Because US judges overscore at home competitions and International judges underscore in world competitions. For example, there is a "stick bonus" on vaults in US competitions but the stick bonus does not exist internationally...
+Elle Catalano that's still kinda missing my point though... In my opinion, McKayla's vault was still better, despite the technical mistakes. I think that McKayla should have gotten a better score because I don't think any female has ever truly done that vault better. I understand the technicalities, this is just my opinion
+Elle Catalano I agree, I don't think that it was perfect. Also considering that judges are also required to judge height and distance, it sucks that someone can get a better score because their legs were together the whole time when the other gymnast does a better vault. Judging is really one of the only down sides in gymnastics, it can almost never be completely fair 😕
robogymnast42 oh my fucking god I was thinking the exact same thing. Simone's vault was not nearly as perfect and she got the better score which I don't understand.
You can't compare the scores given at Worlds and US trials. Had Simone performed the same vault at Worlds, her score would not have been that high. In US completions they always give inflated scores. Secondly, McKayla's vault was undoubtedly amazing, but there were flaws, and hence the deductions. As she mounts the horse her legs are separated, her legs are slightly bent throughout her vault in the air, she crosses her feet a bit, AND she actually did not stick her landing! You could see how she was leaning forward and couldn't hold the position and had to take a step forward. So the deductions she received are fair enough.
The fact that now i know 9years later that Mckayla did THIS vault with a BROKEN FOOT!!! I can't even put into words the epitome of gymnastics that she showed the world. It's mindblowing!!!!!
Simone has an Olympic gold medal on vault, McKayla doesn’t; Simone has more World gold medals on vault than McKayla; and finally, Simone does harder vaults than McKayla did. So, Simone is clearly the better vaulter…
I've probably watched this vault two hundred or so times and I get chills every one! She gets so much height that she has so much time in the air, it's like she twists in slow motion! Truly an iconic piece of gymnastics right here.
This was a perfect vault....only in slow motion you might be able to spot errors, and you still can't pick it out. Very difficult vault even for a guy to do, and McKayla did it better than any guy, very impressive for sure
I think they compared it t Kihei uchimura once, and she was a foot and a half higher or something. It was crazy, especially considering I think the men start 10 cm (~4 inches) higher.
Even with the greatness we are witnessing with Simone Biles today, I still think this is one of the most outstanding, graceful, powerful, unique vaulters to ever live. And in particular this vault! She was SOOOO freaking robbed on this. She should have been a perfect 16.5 on this vault.
Those judges made a big mistake. That should have been a perfect vault. Her legs were straight and her feet were pointed the whole time; she got more than enough height for the vault; and she landed perfectly. That should have been a perfect vault.
mariah xo She didn't stick the landing, she clearly steps out of it immediately after landing but tries to squeeze a fake early salute between landing and stepping. But yeah, it is a bloody beautiful vault.
dwayne6320 Sticking the landing requires that the gymnast hold their footing for at least a couple seconds to show they could hold it indefinitely. She saluted immediately upon landing and stepped in less than 1 second. That is NOT a stuck landing. (And I think you meant "stood". Stud is a totally different word.)
+nathaliexlr8 In slomo it looks like she is still moving because its so slow. In real time she is standing solid. If this is a fake stick, then what is a real stick. Come on
Mandy Denise She immediately stepped out of her landing even in real time. It's obvious her body was tilting forward so if she were to hold it a second longer she would've lost her balance. The point of a stick is to hold it before stepping out to show that you have indeed found balance and that you can hold it indefinitely.
2022 and still watching. I remember seeing this live and my mouth dropped like get it girl. This set the tone for the rest of the night her vault right here.
My girl she trained since she was little for this and she nailed it literally. This is greatness, my girl is a legend. I get chills every time I see this no matter how many times I have seen it. Much love Mckayla ❤️
The first time it bothered me,she just shoved right through her. You can see on Aly's face that she was (a) kind of used to it but (b) annoyed. The second time you saw her say sorry,so that wasn't a big deal, but the first time it was very rude. She may be a coach but she shouldn't just push through her and not apologize.
Feet apart during round-off, toes crossed mid-flight, didn't quite land on the centre line and didn't quite hold the landing. No disrespect intended to Miss Maroney - this is a very, very, good vault - it was the highest scoring women's vault of the 2012 Olympics and deservedly so - but it wasn't perfect, and so didn't get a perfect score. The judges were correct.
Is there anyone in history that received a perfect score with this new scoring system? it seems no matter what they will always put room for error, even on something as perfect as this
+tubechiq88 - Not that I'm aware of...one of the main reasons they changed the scoring system was to avoid the possibility of perfect scores because it could almost always be higher or legs could be straighter, etc - at least in the eyes of the judges. I'd be shocked if we ever see a perfect score in elite gymnastics ever again.
+Lindsey Ruiz I miss the 10 scoring system, but hate how they were giving 10s out left and right, even with hops on the landing or "cowboyed" legs in a flip. I think they started giving out all of these 10s with Nadia in 1976 and it continued until about the 1992 Olympics, then they finally started to make it a bit harder to earn a 10. The 1988 and 1992 Olympics were just insane. Like if you got less than a 9.9 that was it, you were out of the running. Kind of like how college gymnastics still is now.
I remember watching this live, so exciting and i honestly thought she would get the 16.5, but now rewatching it you can see that the landing wasnt completely stuck, she was falling forward and the judges may have counted a .1 step forward when she saluted
Yep, she couldn't quite hold the landing and stepped forward into the salute to try to cover it. However judges are quite familiar with 'stickalutes,' as they're nicknamed, and so took the 0.1 off accordingly. She also wasn't quite on the centre line; you can see in the Japanese tv stations coverage, which was filmed from directly overhead, that she's a few inches to the side.
I agree, she's "absolute state-of-the-art" as no one in the world vaults quite like she does. But the judges "were so wrong?" Do they or does anyone not see that she crossed her toes and that she didn't land in the middle? Wow.
+nathaliexlr8 Thats why there ARE actually a few little deductions. Dont make it look like this is a sloppy vault. No one does not cross their toes. You are being dumb.
Mandy Denise When was I making this look like a sloppy vault? It seems like you only read the second half of my comment and let the first half fly over your head. Yes, this is one of the best vaults I've ever seen, but I'm just commenting on Tim's obnoxiously biased remarks. And of course I know no one doesn't cross their toes; it's the best and easier way not to have a leg separation, and some even cross their legs. And no, she didn't land perfectly in the middle; you can't really tell in this video, but I've seen in another video (perhaps the BBC one? I don't remember) that at a different angle, you can see she lands right next to the middle in the slow-mo. "You are being dumb." WOW what an insult. *slow claps* Perhaps you need to come up with less dumb insults.
I'd be curious to see a panel of judges assembled to judge vaults through the years on video. They could watch and rewatch them, in full speed and in slow motion, and compile their top 10 vaults of all time based upon this.
She set the highest standard for every gymnast man or woman who try vault. This should be in the history books and shown to every Olympic gymnast around the world how it’s supposed to be done. Unrealllll!!!! Such a proud American when I see our team compete!!! We’ve got such badass women💪🏻💪🏻
I would have loved for Makayla to try for Rio. I think it would have been fun to watch her and Simone push each other on this event. Simone is the best vaulter now - especially now that she has the Biles vault, and she's been training a double pike. But at this time, no one was better than Makayla.
You wanna know what these judges thought about her? Someone zoomed all way in and took a gif. 31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m822dn9TAU1qa3az2.gif and here we have people thinking they are really clever on pointing out her mistake. well seems she was good enough to make the judges gape like they just saw santa claus on a rainbowfarting unicorn
Komova's amanar was pretty. Mustafina couldn't do it because of an acl tear she had doing that vault. Maria Paseka wasn't even good at the amanar at this time, she just was able to land it. I'm sure USA thought "shit" after the Russians completed their bars routines which were on the level of the US Amanars. It came down to beam and floor.
To think that these girls were at the peak of that moment and were being sexually abused by an Olympic doctor is unconscionable. Jordyn, Aly, Mac, Gaby. You all are brave souls and we are tremendously proud of you for coming forward with your survivor's story.
It's a perfect vault. Not the only one in the history of gymnastics, yet perfect, and perfect routines should not be compared to each other, but simply admired.
stunning. just absolutely perfect and out of this world amazing. this makes the ef all the more sad :( nevertheless, this is some kind of gymnastics history.
After hearing McKayla’s testimony on how Martha treated her and the blatant disregard to her health and threatened to kick her off the team but yet is cheering like crazy after she lands this vault. Granted McKayla deserved it but it just bothers me that Martha is two-faced like that. Support your athletes in their best and worst times.
Biles is an amazing gymnast. No one can deny that. However, you all do realize that McKayla has the highest score on vault in the history of the Olympics, right? Go ahead, look it up. I will wait right here

+Mandy Denise And she did land perfectly in the middle. The deductions are for the toes and the leg seperation as she goes for the table.
0:30 Oh, I just re-watched this and you can see here she didn't land in the middle.
+nathaliexlr8 your wrong SHE LANDED THAT DEAD IN THE MIDDLE 👍
2 perfections:She and your presentation.
I'd be curious to see a panel of judges assembled to judge vaults through the years on video. They could watch and rewatch them, in full speed and in slow motion, and compile their top 10 vaults of all time based upon this.
Amazing! The deduction most probably came from not sticking for long enough and the minor split legs when she went on the vault
Wow I love watching the landing every time over and over
She set the highest standard for every gymnast man or woman who try vault. This should be in the history books and shown to every Olympic gymnast around the world how it’s supposed to be done. Unrealllll!!!! Such a proud American when I see our team compete!!! We’ve got such badass women💪🏻💪🏻
THE BEST AMANAR IN OLYMPIC HISTORY
I love watching her vault. She's beautiful both inside and out.
this was a time where the judges could have given that perfect score! i will never understand why they didn't.
It is 2020 and this vault still beings me to tears. Unreal
greatest woman vaulter ever.
Second greatest
It’s 2024, right before the Paris Olympics, and I’m still in awe over this PERFECT vault.
OMG She was on Bones! Episode 11 of Season 9. Spark in the Park!
Gives me chills every time I watch it
I would have loved for Makayla to try for Rio. I think it would have been fun to watch her and Simone push each other on this event. Simone is the best vaulter now - especially now that she has the Biles vault, and she's been training a double pike. But at this time, no one was better than Makayla.
Rio was McKayla's plan. Unfortunately, injuries and other health issues got in the way of that.
Still brings tears to me eyes!!
Nothing will come close to this
i never get tired of watching this
You wanna know what these judges thought about her? Someone zoomed all way in and took a gif. 31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m822dn9TAU1qa3az2.gif
and here we have people thinking they are really clever on pointing out her mistake. well seems she was good enough to make the judges gape like they just saw santa claus on a rainbowfarting unicorn
hahaha the opposite of #notimpressed!
OMG I SAW THAT😂😂😂
+Jeran Xii hahahaha NICE love it xD
still get chills when I watch this.
iconic
Best vault in Olympic history.
Flawless vault
MY GOD, this was AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
the russian girls are like ohh sh*t!!
I keep on replaying the "OH MY GOD!" Idk why but it satisfies me
To think that these girls were at the peak of that moment and were being sexually abused by an Olympic doctor is unconscionable. Jordyn, Aly, Mac, Gaby. You all are brave souls and we are tremendously proud of you for coming forward with your survivor's story.
Don't forget about Kyla!
It's a perfect vault. Not the only one in the history of gymnastics, yet perfect, and perfect routines should not be compared to each other, but simply admired.
I can do that, hold my beer
stunning. just absolutely perfect and out of this world amazing. this makes the ef all the more sad :( nevertheless, this is some kind of gymnastics history.
I will wait right here
look at the judge in the back when she lands😂
Still amazes me everytime i watch!!
How is that not a perfect vault? Can somebody explain that to me?
Her legs weren't together when she first hit the table (understandable, but judges are arse holes) and she wasn't dead center either..
I get goosebumps every time I watch this
Shows how its impossible now to get a perfect 10 in the vault in the olympics.
You know it's good when Marta Karolyi is that excited
She is beautiful
