    🌟 About this video:
    Did you ever smell a fragrance on someone and think "wow!" only to buy it yourself and spray it on excitedly to just then realise that it doesn't smell anywhere near as good on you?
    Well Dr Claire is back 👩‍💻 and this perfume science video had been brewing for a while. 😂 I've always wondered what are the reasons that the same fragrance can smell just so different on someone else's skin. I kept watching people talk about "skin chemistry" and I thought to myself, what does that actually mean? 🤔 From my research, it's a bit of a clunky, unhelpful, general term, but I've tried to break it down and explain what would probably be more accurately termed "skin physics".
    Of course, fragrance is a sensory experience, so are these differences a reality or just your perceived experience? Or are they something as basic as you not using a perfume in the same way as someone else? How much difference can all of this actually make to how a perfume smells?
    Here I discuss 20 different reasons why a perfume may smell slightly different on one person compared with another. These reasons can individually contribute small effects that can add up to bigger differences that can be noticeable.
    So have you experienced differences in how a fragrance smells on you and someone else? Do you own a friend's signature scent you just can't wear? Which of these 20 reasons do you think makes the biggest impact on how different a fragrance can smell? Do you think perfumes actually smell the same on different people?

    The points made herein are critically important not only for detecting health conditions in loved ones, but also to understand how and why fragrances can smell soooo different from person to person and from phase to phase of the fragrance. Well done, Dr. Smith! 👍👍👍💖💖💖

      Thanks Veronica 😊 I think this one was pretty self indulgent, it was me asking and answering my own questions about fragrance. And Parkinson's disease is incredibly close to my heart as my grandmother had it for a very long time. Early diagnosis through smell will be helpful in preserving function for longer.

    Many moons ago I was a "perfume girl" at Macy's. My job included spritzing customers with the latest masterpiece of perfumery as they stepped off the escalator. Inevitability someone would recoil in horror and say, "Yuck! That smells terrible!" We were taught to respond with "Perhaps it does not suit Madam's chemistry" thereby taking blame off the perfume and placing blame solely on the customer's problematic chemistry. All with Madam being none the wiser.
    Also, a little correction if I may. Sweat doesn't make skin more acidic. Skin does not have a neutral ph. Skin is slightly acidic with a mean ph of 5. Sweat has a mean ph of roughly 6. So, closer to neutral on the ph scale than skin.
    Thank you for another enjoyable video! Cheers!

    Claire: I am taken aback by the knowledge, research, writing, editing and thoroughly exhaustive inquiry into these issues that we’ve all wondered about but never taken the time to understand and share. Your channel is unique in all of our fragrance community because of the endless hours you spend to bring these topics to us using language we can understand. I don’t think I’m able to quite express my high opinion of your content. I guess “Holy sh*t! I’ve always wondered about this, but all the reading in the world wouldn’t have helped me to understand it the way you’ve presented it in this short and wonderful video!” will have to do. Back in october, I sprayed ariana grande’s cloud on my skin after seeing a friend using it. I hated the way it smelled on my skin at the time, but then sprayed it on my skin yesterday and I liked how it smelled on my skin
    It really goes to show how much my environment, mood, diet and water intake impacted how the perfume smells on my skin. I’m in a safe place with an abundance of food, both of which have increased my mood and I’m eating more fruit, drinking more water, exercising more which are all things I wasn’t doing while living with my mum as being in poverty and being in a dysfunctional home made me have a depressed mood, got anxious more often and had to skip meals and go hungry because there wasn’t enough money to make food last the month

    • @dr.claire.perfume

    I love these scent science videos! This may be a bit different from the subject of the video, but I suffer from chronic migraines and I've noticed this affects my sense of smell immensely. Some days I will be obsessed with a perfume, and other days the same perfume will be extremely nauseating. I've also noticed that traditional "skin scents" are actually quite strong to me, and a lot of times "beast mode" fragrances are usually way too strong and overwhelming. It's very difficult as someone who has recently become a perfume lover!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Yes, I can see that must be difficult. I used to get headaches (not migraines) from certain fragrances, I found spraying them away from my face, so places like behind my knees on my wrists rather than on my chest or neck sometimes helped with that, but you do sound like you are probably very sensitive to fragrance so that might not help. I wonder if there are particular aromachemicals that you have sensitivity to?

      Hi there, I'm a fellow perfume lover / chronic migraine sufferer too. I know migraines are very individual but I just thought I'd share in case it's helpful. For me I think it's the Patchouli note or possibly rose as I've had to declutter these perfumes for triggering particularly nasty migraines: la nuit tresor, Si edp and intense, eau Capitale, Coromandel...Sadly Coco Madamoiselle is also on the chopping block! These perfumes never used to cause pain before covid, but that virus made my migraines much worse unfortunately. I hope you are able to notice a pattern so that you can find some beautiful perfumes that work for you 😊 It is tough when you love scent!

    The amount of time you put into this video! 😮Utterly fascinating (esp the Parkinsonism + t shirt). I love it when you say “sexy time”😂😂 Also, the ONLY TWO times in my life when I hated perfumey scented things was when pregnant. And my husband said I smelled terrible when I had infants (was nursing and didn’t want to wear anything scented…even deodorants) . But my babies were always snuggling with me; I obviously exuded a scent they recognized even if repulsive to others. 🤣❤️

      I had been curious about what people mean by skin chemistry for a while because to me it was a bit of a fast and loose term 🧐 it's made to sound more complicated and like more of a black box than it is.
      I love the Parkinson's disease story. My grandmother had that for 25 years and early pre symptomatic diagnosis will only help towards preserving more function for longer.
      Well I've no experience of children but yes I guess those natural smells are important for bonding. Sounds like it worked. 😊

      When my kids were little and still taking naps, I sometimes would put off showering after working out until I had finally gotten them to sleep, because the smellier I was, the sooner they calmed down and fell asleep. I know most people would find that gross, but I got to a point where I didn't care if what I was doing was considered gross if it helped my kids get the sleep they need. And getting them to sleep faster meant I had less time fighting them over sleeping, and more time to play with them. Win/win!

The effect of this has been made abundantly clear since COVID, but even before then, I believe it has an impact. Another thought is that one or more of the 20 reasons you mention could be working in concert to impact perception of the scent. Thanks for your video! This was awesome as always! I’m always ready to learn something new! I am so glad you mentioned the scent in Vaseline!!!! I remember trying it when I watched a TH-camrs tip to make scent last, I hate Vaseline I hate the scent and texture lol even the scented baby Vaseline gets me nauseous 🥴 you are incredible so many great points here, I’m curious do you spray perfume on neck or chest just curious on your thoughts, I recently watched a Spanish TH-camr who researched why not to spray on certain body parts was very informative but reminded me of you ☺️🤗

      Sheesh yes! Vaseline is icky 😝
      Ooh good question, I am aware of the alcohol content of fragrance and the risks with sun exposure and also the risk of premature skin aging due to the constant dehydration as a result of alcohol exposure to skin, but I do tend to either spray the back of my neck, my chest, my wrist and / or clothing depending on what I'm doing. I am more careful where I spray if it's summer, but I don't tend to worry about it too much, I even spray my hair sometimes. I should probably look into it and learn a bit more about it all! What about you?Thanks for watching ❤️

    Hello Dr. Claire. I absolutely loved this episode. I’ve been interested in this topic for years. It started with me trying to figure out why grass triggered my allergies at home but didn’t when I lived in another state. (Who knew there were so many varieties?) Then my interest peaked after I got married and learned how chemical in mothballs could trigger a reaction (anemia) in my husband’s red blood cells. He has a blood deficiency known as G6PD and there are still doctors that aren’t familiar with it. Suffice it to say my natural curiosity went into overdrive so I’ve always wanted to know how our sense of smell and body chemistry works. Thanks so much for sharing.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh that is really interesting, I didn't know about the mothballs. He must have to be careful, I know there are a few different things that can trigger it. I work with people who work on fructokinase deficiency, but not G6PD. And for sure with the different grass species! I guess that's partly why people with allergies eat local honeys to try to suppress the allergies. Thanks for watching and I'm really happy that you enjoyed the video 😊

    Thank you for sending the link for this. This is exactly what I was thinking about and though logically it does make sense we smell different naturally I do get annoyed when any dislike of a fragrance is chalked up to “skin chemistry” solely. Granted for ease of communication we use simple phrases like that instead of saying “you may not like it on yourself because you have a negative or positive association with the fragrance and oily skin and the weather is humid”. Haha!

    Another fantastic educational video! I do wonder how much our personal like or dislike of someone affects how we react to the perfume they are wearing. Ages ago I had a friend whom I admired a lot and her perfume though it wasn't expensive or popular (in fact the reviews it gets aren't all that spectacular) forever brings positive pleasant memories and enjoyment of the scent. On the other hand, there is someone I dislike as a person who wears very expensive popular fragrances as her signature scents and sprays them generously on herself, and to me they smell like a designer perfume mixed with BO. I am sure it's purely psychological.

      @@dr.claire.perfume I believe I may have reason number 21: People who smoke. There are some perfumes that smell really good on people who smoke. This was the case with one of my co-workers many years ago where her signature scent was Philosophy Amazing Grace. I used to always tell her how wonderfully she smelled and I set out to go to the store and try it on my skin with the intention to buy it. Well, the magic wasn't there. The fragrance did NOT smell like it smelled on her, with that sweetness and how it lingered with those special wafts of warm goodness. On me it fell completely flat and the scent was unrecognizable and plain out uninteresting and boring. Also, one of my grandmothers smoked and drank lots of coffee. Her signature scent was Charlie Blue. It went wonderful with her skin chemistry.

    Hello Claire,
    this was an excellent and informative video! There really are a huge number of reasons fragrances can smell different to various people. I live in a dry, cold climate and have dry skin (fragrances don't seem to last very well here). That might explain why I love ambers and wood and spicy notes so much. I don't shy away from citrus, but they are poor performers on my skin. Cilantro does smell and taste soapy to me, but I have learned to enjoy it. Cumin, coriander, onion, Garlic and dairy do seem to come out through the skin after eating them. I wonder how long the effects from the food we consume last in our body odour smell? I was a super fussy eater as a kid as everything had a strong smell and taste to me. I love exploring scent and taste as an adult though! Thanks for your video! - Jenn

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think with the fussy eating, at least around 2, there are clear evolutionary reasons for that. Like dislike of green veg is because we evolved with toxic plants and that bitterness in green veg is a warning sign for them potentially being toxic. Children who were sensitive to that and didn't eat bitter tasting foods were far more likely to survive.
      i actually have no idea how long our skin scent is affected by what we eat, I guess it would again depend on the half life and excretion of the compounds that cause the smells which would in turn be dependent on climate and what else you are eating. Everything is so complicated 🤣 thanks for watching 😘

    What an enlightening video -this topic and your lecture style is really captivating. My frag journey really only began in earnest with me seeking-out reviews & buying multiple frags this year (v prev only keeping/using 1-2 frags). I’ve noticed that at the beginning of the year and as the weather warmed, 1 or 2 sprays was potent enough for almost any of my frags, but as Fall approached and now winter, I’m spraying at least double that and my pref has def swayed toward more base-heavy perfumes with cold (-10+ to 25F) weather, high-altitude, zero-low humidity = much dryer skin. In fact, I’ve gone as far as to separate my collection into ‘summer/spring’ & ‘fall/winter’ trays which happened naturally as the year progressed - and totally jibes with the insight you’ve so generously given here. Thanks much for helping me/us learn more about olfactory science, adding thought provoking tid-bits - all keeping this lovely journey super interesting & satisfying😘👌

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's really interesting. I guess at such high altitudes everything is more extreme and so you are choosing fragrances and spraying them to reflect those conditions. I think wearing a greater variety of fragrances makes you like more but love less if you understand what I mean. You become pickier in a way, so maybe this is also reflecting your greater scent experience.
      Thank you so much for all your support, I love making perfume science videos and I'm so happy when people enjoy them! ❤️

    I had two examples in my 20's of this. One with armani code. I had a "friend" asking me what i was wearing, she liked it, she bought it, and then.... Oh my, it was like another perfume on her. It smelled bad on her... She thought i was lying when i gave her my perfume name, and she didint spoke to me ever again!!! Like... DAng. Then.... some years later, in my 30's, with la vie et belle, well... she's a lovely one, isn't she? Yeah, but on me it smells like a candy shop, in a very VERY bad way... On my mother and sister, that perfume rocks!!

      Wow, losing a friend over a fragrance is extreme isn't it?! But yeah I can understand if it smelt really bad on her then she might have thought you weren't telling the truth. I really like Armani code but I also don't think it smells as good on my as it does on my friend. Lveb has been reformulated and they've turned down the patchouli so it does smell a bit different and even sweeter now. I guess it's one that can be a little overwhelming too cos it's quite strong, if it doesn't suit you, I expect it can be choking. Thanks for watching ❤️

    What an interesting video. The first perfume I ever bought was Loulou by Cacharel and I chose it because I liked the way it smelled on a friend of mine. I wasn't disappointed. It smelled pretty similar on me. What saddens me though is that I very quickly become anosmic to all my fragrances. I can smell them when I spray them and that's about it. It didn't use to be like that when I was younger so maybe it has to do with age and different levels of hormones. I haven't heard before that people with oily skin are more suited to light floral and citrus fragrances. Too bad I don't particularly like them😢

      I think with oily skin, it's only a matter of personal preference, I think that is only the general thinking, not something to go by, go by your nose and what you enjoy! 😊 I understand the anosmia thing. I get it with woody and musky fragrances sometimes. I just stop being able to smell them but other people tell me that they can smell them on me.
      Interestingly, I just got a sample of some vintage Loulou but I didn't try it yet! I will try it. I remember my mum having it in the 90s 😊

    So strange. After my husband passed away a cashier in the grocery store noticed that I was shopping alone for weeks on end. So she asked me what happened to my husband. When I told her he passed away, she said: “I am so sorry for your loss, but not surprised. He smelled of death for a while.” He actually died of hospital borne infections after a splenectomy, and the cause of the enlarged spleen could never be diagnosed. But it shows what people pick up just by the smell of people, granted he never smelled different to my own nose. But maybe I slowly got used to his odor of death, whatever that means.

    I know I'm a year late to this awesome video, but it makes total sense! My eye-opening experience with scent variation was the following; two of my girlfriends came around the other night (early fall in NZ, so brisk), and they were curious about my new Burberry Her Elixir perfume, so I sprayed both their wrists and my own, waited a minute, and then sniffed... they did not like it on them, complaining that it smelled a bit sharp, sour and too woody! I smelled their wrists and it did indeed smell sharp, sour-milk like and the sandalwood, instead of making the fragrance creamy and grounded, smelled like musky cedar on their wrists! When they smelled mine they couldn't believe that the same perfume could smell so different! Their feedback was that it smelled gorgeous and EXACTLY like a strawberry milkshake; quite berry-sweet and a tad lactonic/creamy on me! My mind was blown, the same perfume, the same application, the same amount of time for drydown and under exactly the same conditions smelled similar on them but completely different on me (I have dry skin and they have normal to oily skin for reference)... wow!

    Hi, Claire. A little time has gone by, and excuse me but I am not going to review all your reasons right now. I don’t think you mentioned this. Another reason I want to add is that if either person applied a different fragrance to their clothing or hair, the fragrance may linger and contribute to the scent of the more recent fragrance applied. I have Covid now and am very grateful that so far my sense of smell seems fine. :) Very informative. Thanks so much!

    I think it can be mostly hormonal diffrences, genetic make-up, whether we take any medications, and even things like locality where we live. For example, the air smells diffrently in different countries. It all depends on the quality of soil, air salinity, chemicals in the oxigen and soil that ultimately permeat us via food air and water.

      Yes, having spoken to a few people going through the menopause, I definitely think hormonal changes have huge effect on our perception of how things smell. I just tested YSL Libre edt at Sephora, I was interested in the edt because it has an element of freshness compared to the edp. I sprayed my arm and a blotter, on the blotter I can distinctly smell that freshness, on my skin it smells like straight up bubble gum. This was fascinating Claire and made me understand a lot of things about my experience with scent especially regarding mood and emotions. I'm very sensitive to scents, especially when I'm feeling anxious, and can easily be overwhelmed by smells.
    Once when I was hospitalised with my mood disorder, I had to ask the cleaning staff to refrain from using cleaning products in my room because they smelled overwhelmingly strong to me. I was also repulsed by the smell of the therapist using a dry wipe marker in group sessions. As soon as they took the lid off it gave me a headache and made me feel nauseous.
    So is it my brain overreacting to certain smells that it might perceive as dangerous?

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is fascinating and totally understandable. If fragrance can make you feel better then I'm sure it can certainly make you feel worse.

    The c word changed my sense of smell pretty drastically. It took weeks just to get my sense of smell back, and when it started coming back, many things didn’t smell right/the same anymore. Perfume was one thing that was a total head scratcher. My sense of smell seems mostly healed now (some things still don’t smell the same), and I feel like I can smell more notes in fragrance now. I smell many things I was never able to smell before. It’s really bizarre. There really are so many things affecting sense of smell.
    I never thought skin played a role in fragrance until I tried the Commodity Paper line. All 3 smelled faintly like alcohol and a hint of something (not sure what since it was so faint) on a tester strip. I sprayed one on my hand and was completely shocked that I could actually smell something completely different. That convinced me that skin totally plays a role in how something smells.
    Thanks for the info. 😊

  • @katjack2780

    This may be a kind of "sideways" comment, but I had been wondering if there were genetic factors that affected how a person might perceive a particular scent. I started thinking about this watching one of Veronica Says' videos where she was talking about smelling "Joy," and finding it very repulsive, comparing it to some urine patches in the subway. I think this might have been due to one of the lighter white floral/green type scents in the perfume. Is there a gene that could cause this perception of a particular smell?
    It's not a great analogy, but I've read that there is a gene that supposedly causes some people to taste cilantro as being "soapy," and so inedible, while others just taste a green herb.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure there are! When you look at the coding parts of DNA, the bits that code for proteins, smell receptor genes are amongst the most diverse of all groups of genes. Some people have certain smell receptors and others don't, some people have multiple copies of the same gene, some don't, also each gene has tiny changes in it which can mean that the smell receptor can function better or worse or just differently, so the variation in how people smell scents is HUGE!
      Also there have been particular receptors identified for particular genes, e.g. with asparagus eating and urine, only some people can smell that smell. And also there are difference in how people perceive the taste as in coriander as you highlight, some people taste it as something delicious others as soap, that is also genetic. 🥰

How many other fragrances people have experienced makes a huge difference to how they judge something.
