The TVR speed 12 deserved a video of its own , being the pinnacle of TVR madness it was ridiculously powerful and had an outrageous aesthetic,
(Especially without the rear wing) a pure beast, and my favorite by far.

And in keeping with TVR tradition, being too insane was its only reason for not being made into more units. Never change, TVR...

I think the Nissan has the classic ripping-canvas sound of a racing V12.

Have seen a Matra F1 V12 run at a test day in the UK, it was ear bleedingly loud! They also used that engine in a sports prototype GT car.
My favourite here though is the Detroit 12v149, what an engine!

      It's even a 70 degree v12. Which is extremely odd. Most v12's are 60, 120, or 180 degrees.

I bought a “twin 6 “ like the first engine in the video, a couple of years ago , when I saw it on market place. I honestly never heard of one before and I’m a dyed in the wool car guy. It is so rare of a motor that I had to have it. Drove around 200 miles to get it. I have never tried to start it because of time availability so it was good to hear one running. Thanks for the video from an old man in Oklahoma

I know Johnny Parsons (Indy car legend) son, and he was telling me his Dad built a V12 2 stroke (!) Indy car engine, and actually built an entire car based around the engine. Apperently USAC deemed it illegal just as it was getting ready for practice/qualifying for the month of May back in late 60's or early 70s. He says the engine is out there somewhere, in a museum perhaps? It would be great to find it and learn a few things about it

I was in the stand opposite the Audi pits when it did that. Seeing them come out of tight corner was something I'll never forget. One year they were overtaking a few petrol LMP1s up the start-finish straight, fast cars, but the pugs just walked by them.
As for the Corvettes, not particularly quick, but usually won due to reliability and just plodding on relentlessly.
Before the revised pit exit they have now, I saw a 911 coming up the straight towards the bridge, a Panoz roadster left the pit lane and was round the bend and under the bridge before the 911 was braking for the corner. That was about 99, that was when I decided I was an LMP kinda guy. Audi came along and won everything until the pugs saved us from boredom, Halcyon days.

Don't worry about including the 180 degree V12. Because dynamically they're about the same. That's also why we see such a wide variety of bank angles with 12 cylinder engines.
As British Daimler branded their version of the Jaguar XJ12 the "double six" no doubt because it's a more correct description in many ways.

The 12v-149 blocks and cranks were bolted together as I have built over 20 of them and they were a good engine for their time. Most of them in the mining trucks got close to 18,000 hours before overhaul.

That's not a bullet hole it's just a hole in the body for old school brakes, handbrake I think. Lever was taken out in later model years but they didn't spend the money to retool their factories so the hole stayed in the body. I've seen a few levers like that in 1950s> trucks, so I'm kinda guessing at what it rlly is... but I know for a fact it's not a bullet hole lol

Don't forget, even a naturally aspirated two stroke Detroit needs the blower to even run. Air is blown through perforations in the cylinder when the piston uncovers them at bottom dead center.

  • @thethirdman225

3:03 RPM comes up at about 4,300 which I suspect is a bit low, even for a Diesel. The Audi R15s were revving at about 5,500. I may have made a mistake and the basic equation I used is a rough ballpark figure at best.

Yes. It's about the design of the crankshaft. In a true boxer design the pistons move counterwise in opposing sides. In a flat/180° V12 they don't.

The Detroit 149 did not have welded blocks. They were bolted together. The crankshafts were one-piece. I used to work in the plant where they were built, in Indianapolis in the early '80's. The blocks came in either V6 or V8 castings, then were bolted together to make V12's or V16's early on. The V8 and V20 came later on. I always wished they would have made a V14 by bolting together a V6 and V8 block.

V12's sound like inline-6's but eat twice the gas and are way heavier than any V8~
The Mercedes flat-12 that you talk about is indeed nomenclatured properly. A 180 degree V12 is also correctly called a flat-12, but in this particular instance it is NOT a "boxer", since the pistons opposite to each other share one crankshaft throw and move WITH each other, left and right. In a "boxer" horizontally opposed engine, each piston has its own throw, and the pistons are always either moving towards each other or away from each other. The flat-12 is the only non-boxer horizontally opposed engine, since it alone can cancel the first order vibrations.

  • @chrisbaker2903
    @chrisbaker2903 7 ปีที่แล้ว

About the "flat" V-12, Hey! It's just a 180 degree V-12. That counts. Right? One thing also caught my attention, that Detroit Diesel was in fact turbocharged and it, unlike a lot of the engines shown, fired right up. That 11.5 liter monster at the beginning put out maybe a bit more hp and torque maybe less, I don't remember what the numbers were you quoted, than my parents 1959 Mercury with it's 383 variant of the 430 Lincoln engine, rated at 220hp at 4400 rpm and 480 lb/ft of torque at 2200. I really thought I was reving the heck out of it until I put in a tach and found it shifting at 4000 rpm. 55 in first, 95 in second, I don't know in 3rd... LOL Kids. I'm lucky to have survived. With 2.73 gears you don't need an overdrive. 2,000 at 65 mph. Ok, I went back and looked and it wasn't as close as I thought. Sorry. Actually it puts out about the same power and torque as my 5.9 liter Cummins.

  • @v12tommy
    @v12tommy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

No need for apologies on the flat 12. While a boxer flat 12 is possible, every one that I know of is just a V12 with a 180 degree vee angle. Same crankshaft and everything. So the flat 12 listed, is in fact, a V12. Even the Porsche 917, who's V12 engine was an evolution of Porsche's earlier 8 cylinder boxer engine, had a traditional V12 crankshaft fitted.

    8:24 I have a few SERIOUS questions
1 Can this engine have an aspiration?
2 Where can I get one of these engines?
3 Does the header company Hooker have any header manifolds for this engine?
4 Can I fit this in my S10?
5 Am I a dumbass for asking these questions?
    *ANSWER THEM ALL*

The Mercedes M291 is a flat 12 but that means it could either be a boxer like Porsche used or a 180degree V as used by Ferrari.
Even though Ferrari called the 365 and 512 BerlinettaBoxer they never built a true boxer engine.

As far as I know the Speed Twelve was intended as a race car, but before it was able to race the class regulations changed and it had no place to go.

It was actually more powerful as an intended road car because endurance racing regulations meant engine intake restrictors. Why Peter Wheeler just didn’t fit traction control to tame the car a bit, I’ll never understand. But he was sensible compared to the Russian dickhead that bought TVR.

a flat 12 cylinder is really just a v12 with 180 degree cylinder angle, you don't need to apologise, if the crankcase was different as well then it would've been a boxer 12 ;)

Visio Racer, The blowers on all V series Detroit Diesels are Not recessed in the block, they sit in the V between the banks, and even if they have Turbo chargers they still have blowers because they are what scavenges the cylinders, in the video the piping coming off the Turbo's are going into the top of the blower.

NA-normally aspirated does not mean it has a supercharger fitted...
Normally aspirated means the engine sucks it's air by itself.
