    Fun fact, the Cadillac V16 was actually two inline 8 motors mated together. That's why each one has its own carb, fuel pump, etc. The only thing they share is a crankshaft. My source is the 1938 Cadillac Series 90 V16 limousine we have forsale at work and the 1939 Cadillac Series 90 V16 limousine we just sold. Another one was that the Ford/Mercury Flathead V8 was an absolute marvel in its time. It made huge power compared to the other cars on the road. It was so impressive, that Clyde Barrow (between robberies) wrote a personal letter to Henry Ford complimenting his wonderful motor. The Flathead V8 is no power maker but they were the first motor people started digging into and making faster. Back in the mid-late 1940's, when Booneville and racing was really exploding, the chances of a car not being powered by a Ford or Mercury Flathead V8 were almost none existent. I personally credit the Ford/Mercury Flathead V8 as the father to our modern racing scene.

      @throw-fz4br 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Out of every car we have had at work (hundred of classic cars,) we have had absolutely zero issues with Ford/Mercury Flathead V8's, spare for dead batteries and the fuel pump failing on the '39 Ford DeLuxe Roadster. They all run perfectly smooth (carbs are a wee gummed up so you can't nail the throttle.) The three speed manual transmissions are insanely lovely as well. The easiest shifting I've ever felt. Much nicer that say, the 1954 Aston Martin DB2, or other sports cars we have. Something about Ford and Mercury in the 1930's and 1940's was spot on.

      Yep..! The police had to buy new Ford V8, to keep up with the criminal duo Bonnie&Clyde. Also, it was the preferred motor for moonshine drivers. They needed a fast car to outrun the law. Ahh....wish I could have been back then, must have been a great time.

    Hmm if you want to see something crazy go for the Napier Sabre Engine, a H-24 (yep 24 cylinders) aero engine, with 37 litres displacement, early versions produced 2200 hp, later versions up to 3500 hp and the final prototypes up to 4000 hp.
    As for the Cummins, yeah nice, but there are some even madder engines on locos.....
    Just look at the EMD 645 series......... it could come as a V6,V8,V12,V16,V20 and with displacements of between 84 and 211 litres....that makes the cummins look almost puny. ;)

    The Judd V10 is one of the best sounding engine ever. I've heard it in person at Le Mans and only the 6.0 V12 Lola Aston Martin can sound nearly as better. It's got so much torque too. It almost beat the mighty Audis in 2005 and 2006 with Pescarolo.
    I hope Judd will built more V10s in the future for the LMP1 Privater's teams.
    Got to admit the Cosworth V8 engine sound glorious too.

    The Ford flathead you give specs for is not the standard car flathead. The 5.5L (337) was only used in the '48 - '51 2.5 ton trucks and the '49 - '51 Lincoln as a replacement for the V-12. The largest used in the Ford cars was the 239 with 95HP and 170 lb-ft of torque up to 110HP the last year. The 255 was used in Mercury cars from '48 to '52 with 110HP and 200 lb-ft of torque up to 125HP the last year.

    Ever heard of the Isetta engines? One piston connected by two shafts to a double cylinder (which is almost two cylinders) in a two stroke engine.

    I just liked up what opposed cylinders are for the tank engine and omg that's so cool

    • @GPNeve
      @GPNeve 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you think that is cool, you should have a look at the:
      Napier Deltic Diesel engines
      Its a triple - opposed-piston valveless, supercharged uniflow scavenged, two-stroke Diesel engine
      I know its a lot of words, but if you check it on wikipedia, theres a diagram that will explain it at once ;-)

    • @joshbobst1629
      @joshbobst1629 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, the Deltic is a one of a kind beast. Recently the idea is making a comeback in aviation diesel engines, specifically because it has such a high power to weight ratio.

    8:05 I'll be damned if that's not the rear lights of an old Audi 80, build from the mid 80's to the 90's.
    At 10:47 you can see two pistons complete with rod, hanging on the wall. Just in case one or two of them should break during sailing with the Emma Mærsk.
    Btw.. Burmeister& Wain (B&W) used to deliver all diesel engines to the Lindøværft where the Emma Mærsk was build. They were the first one in the world to introduce diesel engines in ships. They got assistance and bought patent rights from good old Rudolf Diesel himself, the father of all diesel engines.
