JW I've recently passed my 2391-52 and I just wanted to thank you as all your videos have really helped me to get through!! I've been a commercial spark for over 20 years but had no real clue about the how electricity is actually distributed throughout the the country and understand it!! You are a god send my friend. I'm doing my level 3 after a few years hiatus from the field and was really struggling before I watched your videos. For some reason I really understand topics better when you explain them compared to my lecturer who just wizz's through everything at lightning speed and gets annoyed when I ask a question.

Hi John, great thanks. In functional testing I add, all switches set to OFF, everything is OFF! There's always a two way switch somewhere where there was a 50/50 chance!

Hi John, I was looking at a wholesaler's catalogue the other day and it occurred to me that the number of socket outlets that have added functions such as USB charging etc now far outweigh standard power outlets these days (at least they did in this volume).😵
My thinking, with this in mind is that the order of testing would surely need to reflect the installation.
I'm thinking specifically that accessories with sensitive components need to be removed during IR testing, therefore, in a ring circuit containing a number of outlets with USBs it would seem to make sense to do the IR test first with them disconnected, then connect them up and carry out procedure for continuity tests.
Am I missing something?
BTW, I'm a firm believer that a socket outlet should be just that and nothing else, but we are where we are 😒

Regarding Final Circuits in the On site Guide -
I have picked a few circuits that are common to most domestic properties, noted the maximum cable length suggested, then calculated the voltage drop based upon the stated length. The results I am getting are way over the max voltage drop allowed. For example:
Lighting circuit 6A RCD, ref method C with 1.5/1.0 cable - the book states 90 meters BUT
90 meters of 1.5/1.0 on a 6amp breaker with a loss of 24ma per meter = 15.66v loss.
What am I doing wrong here?

For most circuits including lighting, the load is not all at the end - it is distributed along the cable so the voltage drop reduces reduced as you move away from the supply end.

Thank you for the response.
I think my confusion is that if I installed a 90m lighting circuit in 1.5 twin and earth as per the OSG max circuit length my calculations would indicate a voltage drop higher than than the 3% allowed by the regs.
The same problem seems to appear with other examples that I have tried regarding max cable lengths in the OSG.
It still feels like I'm missing something. ...

Hi JW. Thanks for the great videos. Can you advise why Zs on ring circuit supplying socket outlets with 32A type B Mcb, measured at 3 ohms is acceptable if additional protection is provided by 30ma rcd? I thought the max Zs for the circuit should be 1.10 ohms. Thanks

I've only just seen this video and am surprised there is no Earth/Neutral continuity/impedance test? Or have I got this wrong?
I'm just about to do my AM2 and I'm unsure which is my last test before I put the board cover back on and power up. Do I do PFC put my cover back on power up and then straight into Ze - Phase sequence and RCD to finish off?

So I don't actually do a polarity dead test, is it part of continuity. Because as you do R1+R2 for radials you are confirming polarity yes? And for ring finals as you do end to ends, r1+rn and r1+r2 you are confirming polarity yes? Would you just check the polarity box after doing so? And for live polarity is that done at the start of live testing and is it done with the main switch on or off? I'm guessing off but just trying to clear all my misconceptions. Thanks John!!
R1+R2 confirms polarity as well, so not necessary to do it separately.
Polarity of the supply is done with the main switch off, at the incoming terminals (which will be live).

Hi Mr. John. Its great to learn things you share. One suggestion though.. while speaking (mostly when your face is visible) please speak without extreme highs and lows! Can't hear you properly in low volume and in high volume it becomes too uncomfortable!

Considering what you can actually see in the UK, am still waiting for the word “ visual “ on a test sheet.
The results of a machine are not the complete answer. Even when it passes this does not show the installation is complete or right.
Quite surprised to see that there is no item on your list along the lines of "visual inspection". I can imagine a scenario where an installation has produced perfect test results but where the standard of workanship has been poor (e.g. exposed copper wire at terminations, cables poorly routed, fittings poorly/dangerously sited etc. etc.) I think this should be included under the "system dead" heading.
That would come under condition reports and not installation certificates as installation certifcates are almost always for new installs where a visual should not be needed if you installed it correctly
Well thats my whole point -"if" you installed it correctly!
If you have installed it yourself, you already know how it was installed. If checking other people's work then inspection is required but this is a separate process from the testing.

What will be the recommendation for plastic consumer with regards to amendment 3 metallic consumer units when doing a periodic inspection.
The report would state something like 'plastic consumer unit does not comply with 421.1.201'.
EICRs (previously periodic inspection reports) are not a place to recommend anything, they are just a report on the facts.
If the client wants recommendations for improvements so that the installation complies with BS7671. those should be provided as a separate document.
John Ward the coding when carrying out eicr is the recommedation for the installation.

is it a reg that you have to go through each individual circuit and get your r1+r2, then go back to start and do Ir on each, or can you complete the 4 dead tests on a circuit then move on to the next circuit and do the 4 tests on that and so on?
No - the only requirement is that the tests are done in the correct order for each circuit.
If there are multiple circuits, it doesn't matter if you do all the tests on one circuit first, or one test on all the circuits, or any combination. All depends on what is most convenient at the time.

It doesn't do phase sequence but that is only required for 3 phase installations.
It doesn't have an earth electrode test either, but you can use the loop impedance test for earth electrodes in many situations.

Can anyone advise on installing a window roller shutter that comes with a small cable size of 1mm or perhaps 0.75 mm . Does this have to be put on the lighting circuit ? Can you put a plug on it and wire a socket to the lighting circuit and simply plug it in ? I have 10 Amp RCBO on lighting circuit. I cannot find info on this anywhere. Thanks
Lighting circuit, or another circuit, or connected via a plug. All acceptable.
@@jwflame But could the 0.75 mm cable be on a power circuit . Power circuit is 2.5 mm. ?? The smaller 0.75 mm cable only good for 6 amps would not have circuit breaker protection at 10 amps . Also if the roller motor got stuck it might draw higher amps ? Its not like a light bulb which has a max current draw. Please explain. I am totally confused by this. Thanks
What tests would you do before changing a consumer unit?
Ideally all of them, but as an absolute minimum insulation resistance for all circuits (otherwise a fault could result in the new RCDs not even switching on), protective conductor continuity, and polarity.

Hi john how would you do live tests on an economy 7 board during the day?
Either don't do the live tests, or if it's really essential wait until the power is on (early morning is useful for that as most are on until 7am). However once all of the dead tests are done, you have already confirmed it's safe to use, there isn't a huge amount to be gained from live tests other than testing an RCD, which often wouldn't be fitted to E7 circuits anyway.
