Yeah, the relationship between Watson and Friday was easily the best aspect of the film. But they just had to throw it all away after the end credits. -_-
about the after credit : "Watson sealed The Notes inside his mind using Alexei's technique of the entrancing music and opium. The director confirmed that Watson was not turned into a corpse, he is still a regular human being. This process causes him to lose all memory of the 1 year journey and supposedly, of Friday as well. (We can't be too sure bc the movie doesn't follow the beginning of the book, only the ending is the same, and when Watson meets Friday for the first time in the book, he is already a corpse and only knew him for a year) The scene is supposed to be a transitioning scene, to show the end of the corpse world and the start of the world of Sherlock Holmes. Friday gained a soul through a strain from his inspection of The Notes in the Oosato chemicals laboratory. Friday and Watson part ways. (Presumably in the movie, Friday, for some reason, leaves Watson, but in the book, by the time Friday gained a consciousness, Watson had already left.) 4 years later, Watson meets Sherlock Holmes and the story continues as thus. Friday continues watching over Watson in the hopes that someday they will be able to meet and speak again."
arigathankyouuu! I just finished the film and the ending is not confusing me but the change of skin tones bothered me. So I looked up an ending explanation since I can't afford to read it nor do I know what site to read it from. Then I found you. your explanation.
The post credit scene just- absolutely destroyed it all for me. It was the equivalent of shredding a masterfully done movie into a blender of an unnecessary and whack conclusion . S P O I L E R S He went through all that goddamn trouble to entirely resurrect Friday just to hop onto another person and have fun with him and leave Friday to stare at him from a rooftop like the ending of some fucking 2000's superhero movie. Haha nope. I bet the creators were just like "So, I think leaving it to an ambiguous ending isn't smart enough- I know! How about we just throw in Sherlock fucking Holmes and turn Irene Adler into a mother fucking android! That's what smart people want to see today, right? Awesome plot twists?"
The Empire of Corpses is set in 1878 and acts as an unofficial and obviously non-canon sequel to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and strangely, as a prequel to Sherlock Holmes. Since it isn't official, it plays around with the setting a bit
@@adrianmangiliman3935 Yeah, the sequel thing, it's really genius, the prequel part, it's kinda stupid. I really don't see how on Earth they saw it as a good idea, It just doesn't makes sense!
But hey, I want to reply to this comment, someone said on Reddit that the reason Watson is going around with Holmes leaving Friday behind, it's because despite the name, that isn't Watson anymore, Watson died in the actual end of the story, killed himself to go pursue Friday in the afterlife. The Friday that speaks and appears after the credits, and throughout the whole movie is a new entity, which through information, became sentient.
I know this is a response to a very old comment, but the original author of the story, who went by Project:Itoh died of cancer in 2009 before he finished writing the story for Empire of Corpses, so it sat unfinished for a number of years before it was picked up and finished by co-author To Enjo who…didn’t share the same literary ideals as the original author and rushed the ending plot in both the novel and when advising on the movie.

I personally understood exactly what was happening, and watched it more than once. so much symbolism in this movie, which actually helps tie it all together since there is little to no exposition. it's a mess, until you organize it.

I just bought the dub. I really liked it. I seem to have gotten the gist of what Friday and Watson really were and it kinda comes off a little Evangelion-y about perception, reality, and "restarting". Of course it wasn't the next Ghost in the Shell or End of Evangelion but it was pretty damn good. The final third of the movie was a confusing mindfuck and the eyeball-meltingly gorgeous visuals made it even harder to concentrate on the dialogue lol but that just gives it rewatch value as GiTS and EoE did. Very happy with my purchase and see myself giving it many more viewings in the future as well as some friends/family recommendations. For once, good job Studio WIT!
If anything makes the movie for me, it's the style and world that it takes place in. Very Bloodborne-esque, with all the bio-Victorian aspects, the small, intricate devices and the way the locations look and feel. Since that's one of my favorite games of all time, I may be a tad biased, but still, was a joy to watch, even if I have zero idea what was going on in the last half-hour of the film.
I loved everything about this movie and followed it pretty easily. I would have loved if it was a series but that's because I'm greedy and want more XD
For me, I was totally on board with the story up until roughly the last 15 minutes, where everything starts to fall apart. After the conflict between the main protagonist and main antagonist is resolved, it went back to being pretty good again. It was just the conflict's resolution that was a confusing and jumbled mess. Oh... and the end credit sequence. That was dog shit.
5:57 Those are called "breasts". They tend to grow on most women naturally, and some former "men" with the help of estrogen pills. I'm honestly surprised that you're confused by the sight of them. They're not all that uncommon. Then again, you struggled to follow the fairly straightforward plot of this movie, so I guess I shouldn't overestimate you.
I know im late but what ever I saw this movie and loved it. I don't get why people are confused isn't it obvious. They all want the power of bring the dead back to life with a soul. They were all searching for it, well those who wanted to recreate what victor had created. I wasn't lost at all. i guess i can now see why some where lost but i wasn't. I enjoy movies like this that make the viewer think about whats going on. I enjoy watching a movie/show and trying to figure out whats going on as i watch.
i have a vague understanding but i still would say it wasnt well executed, plot wise. right when japan happened is when it started to show. M wanted everyone dead cause it would end suffering, so he got the corpses to attack and then most people were corpses. So : 1)explain to me why those people came back after they were corpses. 2) is the secret to bringing the dead to life a mass sacrifice? 3) why did the two Russian guys at the beginning decide to become corpses? if corpses dont have a soul what difference does it make if they get necro-ware implanted in them? they just turned their bodies to tools or are they saying they did have a soul in them after their deaths? 4) so certain high frequency sound can control the corpses? like safe words or whatever? why is this only something only a few can do? only some staffs can do it and a corpse automaton? 5)what were the crystal that appear? is this supposed to be some occult stuff? 6) didnt the main character already get the confirmation of a soul in his friend when he tapped the pen on his nose? so he isnt going to stop till he bring him back? how do we and they know for sure the corpses arent in excruciating pain and just want to die? it is very interesting to think of the economics and politics and even religion of a world like this. like with planned obsolescence of our technology you would have nearly an infinite supply of corpses so long as there are people to demand it cause you cant have one without the other and the corpses would probably fall apart in a few months if not sooner. Actually do these things eat, are modifications done to them to make them somehow stronger? how long do they last before they fall apart?
@@joeandrew8752 I know its been a week since you wanted your questions answered. I didn't forget i just wanted to make time to watch the movie again since its been a while since i last scene the movie. But i still have yet to find room to watch the movie again. Ill answer some of your questions from the top of my head. 1.
LOL i answered these from the bottom to the top (Starting with 6 to 1.) So in 2. i said that the ones who are killed are now dead, The ones who came back to life (The civilians) were in the process of dying but had their souls removed so their bodies just lied their soullessly. The corpse are dead so they didn't have their souls removed and placed back nor did they come back to life. The spell that was used during the ending only seeked for living humans to take their souls so that the old man could reborn his beloved wife. 2. No, also going to assume your talking about the final parts of the movie where the dead are walking every where killing off everyone. So you see during that time the people that died, well died. Those who were behind killed meaning in the process of dying had their souls removed from them. So their bodies were just lying there, no soul in side just a soulless body. Not in control of anything, think of it as an object just lying on the floor. The reason they weren't dead because like i said they had their souls removed and when the spell had broken they had their souls placed back in their bodies. Which is why they are not dead. But the dead who are dead are dead same with the corpse who are controlled with the device. They are dead and well the spell didn't take their soul but the ones who are still alive. 3. I'm going to assume your talking about Nikolai and Alexei. Well Alexei was talking to Watson about how evil it is to continue such research so he demonstrated this by killing Nikolai and making him into a walking corpse. Not only did Alexei did this to Nikolai but to his brother as well and the other town folks you had seen. Alexei was crazy about finding out the secrets to bringing the dead alive. So he experimented on several people which meant he had to kill those who he tested on. Alexei became a corpse because he already knows how cruel it is to kill someone just to do research, so the only way for him to prove to Watson just how inhuman such research could be. He decided to become a corpse him self. He was the only one to decide to become a corpse himself, Alexei inject Nikolai with a code that give him the order to inject himself (Alexei) so he would become a walking corpse. Also don't remember too much if Alexei was aware that he was on a assassination list which could be another reason why he did this. 4. They are controlled by a device and the device can be overwriting with high frequency sounds. The old man was able to do it because he found the journal that had the notes to play such sounds. 5. That could be the most logical explanation. During that scene the spell had been broken, so the punishment for breaking such spell released crystals which can kill those who are around. 6. Yes the taping pen scene did tell us that the soul is in fact still there just locked within the body. Im going to assume the writers went with the theory saying the soul is still in the human body until the human body has decade into nothing. Correct Watson will not stop till he brings his friend back from the dead. Well for the last question that really isn't told all that is known is that they have died already and well they are just controlled by a device. Think about like zombie ants. The ants don't feel pain because they had died and are just being controlled by a fungus. Information such as knowing if they eat and what not isn't told. But what is clear is that the dead that are controlled with the device were turned into walking corpse shortly after the decaying stage of the human . So let say that they would last longer then a human would without food because well they don't need food to live since they aren't alive but controlled. Which is why many of them are skinny to the bones. Now lets put some logic into this question. They will rot and fall apart because well everything in life will one day come to an end. well research did research on the corpse implanting new technology to them so the ones that are strange and have strange behaviors from the others could have been the ones that scientist implanted new technology to the corpses. Sorry this took a while for me to replay again i wasn't ignoring you. Just looking for time to re-watch the movie but still couldn't. And if you need me to clarify on something ill try my best next time.
Joe Andrew sorry it took a while again. Glad it helped you, many review channels didn't try to look that deep in to the movie. Because it was just too much info to handle all at once in such a short time

I spent half the movie interested in the relationship between Watson and Friday and the other half hoping something good would come out of the movie. In the end, I felt disappointment and wishing there was more. If they would have dropped the references and focused on the core story I think this would have been a 8/10 movie.
I feel like if Empire of Corpses absolutely wanted to put every storyline in, it would have been even more benefitual if it was an episodic series, or as you put it, cut some story elements out. The world is very interesting, one that I would love to explore more of.
After watching this review (which was very good!), I was really curious about this movie but when I got to see it, I was disappointed. The story felt really rushed and unexplored at some points, even though the atmosphere and the general idea were really cool. I think it would have been better if put as an anime, giving the story the time it needs. Anyway, will the original book be published outside japan?
I’m just as confused but from the minor info I managed to gather from others is that by the end Watson did not turn to a corpse he just used the russian engineer’s method to store the note’s info inside his brain so that no one else discovers it (maybe?) So he ends up losing memory of the one year he spent together with friday, haldy (orsmth), and that bodyguard. They end up watching over Watson, who forgot about them, in hopes he would one day remember them (I guess) Friday obtained a soul through a strain while they were in Japan getting the notes, but was unstable (Idk y honestly) and as to how it stabilized by the end, well, I’m just guessing here: Remember when Watson held friday’s hand while he was transferring the notes? And then while talking and losing consciousness Friday squeezed his hand? I’m guessing that’s when it stabilized. Now if u ask me y at the time I honestly dk but I think it was also a strain due to the weird crystals coming out of the notes? I think so at least. Also while credits were playing Friday asks himself if he had rlly obtained consciousness or not, and if he had then when. So I’m guessing that they left it up to us. Lets not forget all the Sherlock references thou, but if u ask me they were almost meaningless, only there to add smth like lore maybe? I found it useless tbh but all in all was a nice ride if u try to understand it Sorry for all the text but hope it helps.
@@xVadRay yeaa definitely! The animation was beautiful, absolutely stunning. Story could have been sooo much more than that but I guess this is what happens when u only get one movie with limited time.
I loved the atmosphere the movie built up. I liked the way everything was built up, even if they built up too many without actually concluding much of it. Of course the movie was average in many ways. And the story, well it for sure had it's flops. Especially towards the end. But overall i found it simply a cool idea more then anything. With one of the scenes sticking with me as it actually terrifies me to think of the pain and suffering that person went through in showing him "what continuing" was going to get him. As much as i want to love this movie, it's just average.
I had a sinking feeling the story couldn't live up to the amazing visuals and I was right. Simply put, too much was thrown in my face to really be able to enjoy or understand the film. Still, I vastly enjoyed the beautiful steampunk element which is one of my favorite genre's and all the references from literature became a sort of game to me to see how many I could recognize. Worth watching once if you are a steampunk/literature fan.
It may have been the hype that made it out to be a little disappointing. Though i mostly agree with what you say in your review. Definitely that 'we must save the world' aspect kinda made it all a little... boring. I personally really liked the film mostly because of the relationship showed between Friday and Watson -- the sences with those two were my favourite as well.
Oh, how I wanted to love this movie, but instead after watching it I found myself even hating it. It raised so many questions and important questions about life and existence, the meaning of it all, and they didn't have the balls to address it! No, they just threw in some fantasy bullshit in the end and called it a day. But I'm actually grateful because I had to search so many literature about necromancy, and what is a soul and how it all relates to our bodies and our personality. What makes us human. So, after all that, this anime IS terrible but it inspired to find something new, something important, which I would never do without seeing it. Now, it's almost nostalgia.
ikr!!! the fantasy parts made no sense at all maybe there is some connection between it all you'd understand if you knew the source material but I DID NOT and for me personally it was a weird cut from an interesting story with questions about the form and existence of the soul to... people controlling zombies via weird blue / green shock waves they magically create with magical.. shoes? a staff? or is it a magical ability a person just has..?? I don't know, I did not understand anything of it and it just felt so random like a fever dream

@@passantsalama5100, no, no, you've got a point there. Watson's missing memories actually explains some of the plot holes in the end scene. So thank you :3
My view on the movie is likely skewed due to my love for the worlds behind the story. That said, it needed more time. Their journey and the grand finale could easily have spanned three movies and have included a balance of plenty lovely world building and story. Other than that, I felt rather sick after the stunt Karamazov pulled. I'm not sure if that's a good thing...
You are all looking at this movie from an Americanized view. We like simple and tight storytelling. This is Japanese anime based on Japanese Manga. They have a completely different stylized view.
Can someone tell me if the NOVEL this film was adapted from, was in terms of story the same as the film in both premise and impact? Is the book significantly different enough to be worth reading?
The start of the novel is really good but the last part is a bit confusion because Itoh (the original author) dieu from cancer and the stroy was left untouched for some times but the second writer didn't know what Itoh wanted for the end so he made it more vague but it could answer some of your questions that couldn't be answered with the movie

i wish i saw this before i bought it- its premise seemed like ' this could be a unique find' but left me with action induced eye strain and a huge 'whats all this green shit' at the end. the constant impending death scenes to miraculous resets like a kid ramming toy cars together. and what a sick end that just seemed so perverse to what watson promised. the world was just a discussing nightmare that you would not want to see propagated as a franchise- imagine freinds/family being used as corpse slaves.
This is the typical of anime. production crunch and bad pacing lead to a squandering of a great premise and execution for a movie, hopefully japan can look into other models for making animation that don't lead to as much time mismanagement
This anime is confusing af. Too much nonsense shenanigans. Every villains/antagonists in this movie has confusing ambitions/goals. Add to it with post credits scenes totally unnecessary & probably ruined everything. The first act showed a lot of promises but it's all fall apart in Japan end part, like wtf is going on here ...
Agree! At first, I thought I knew what the One's agenda really was, until he did something else during the climax of the film with him mentioning something about his bride. From that moment on, I was like,"Wait what? I thought your goal was to.. Wth" About the bride thing, I don't know if it was carelessness on my part for not paying enough attention to the story or the story just didn't reveal to the audience enough. Either way, I really found it hard to follow the story, especially during the final battle, as I was busy trying to find the reasons behind the actions that the villains took due to the implicit ambitions that they had.
When i first saw her i knew something about her was up. Then as i started to pay more attention to her. it all made sense. The scene that gave it away was when she said she wanted a soul, she wanted to feel emotions. I knew she wasn't human. Offtopic I also thought about something else. I had a college class back in highschool called philosophy of death This had me thinking because in a lecture there was a talk about the soul. The soul is unknown and well by many not even a thing. Well when i was watching the movie and pay attention to Hadary Lilith (The robot) i kept wondering what is a soul. (Because of the philosophy of death class ) I also kept on telling my self she already has a soul because she is able to feel emotions towards others and how she feels. She kept on talking about how she wanted to be able to feel those emotions even though she felt it by the tone of her voice. But that also brought up another talk because in one of the lectures from the class, One lecture talks about how 'If a human is programmed to have feelings does it count as a soul and what not. And it just made me think about lots of stuff. Sorry that i had to release all this on you. lol
Honestly, what the fuck even was the second half? So much shit was just...happening...without any rhyme or reason. I just don't understand how you can introduce all of these plot points and not answer 80% of them.

Kudos! I'd love to see more anime reviews from this channel. This was very enjoyable! Keep up the good work.

+GGWP Four...did youtube start subscribing people to random channels the same way it deletes subscribers? >_>
Awesome review. Please do more of this. It was very professional and well reasoned.
I know im late but what ever
I saw this movie and loved it.
So :
1)explain to me why those people came back after they were corpses.
1.
LOL i answered these from the bottom to the top (Starting with 6 to 1.)
So in 2. i said that the ones who are killed are now dead, The ones who came back to life (The civilians) were in the process of dying but had their souls removed so their bodies just lied their soullessly.
Also sorry if my sentence structure isn't the best. i was never the smartest kid in school but still managed to graduate with a GPA of 3.75
Schools just want students to follow instructions, teaching isn't like it use to be, school want students who can follow directions instead of students who want to find themselves in the word. Just simply following directions is all anyone needs in school. I really didn't learn anything back in school
Sorry for the side track. But i hope this helped a bit. And if you need me to clarify on something ill try my best next time.
@@Alex-vz2jz no this explains it pretty well, thanks.
Joe Andrew sorry it took a while again.
Glad it helped you,
many review channels didn't try to look that deep in to the movie. Because it was just too much info to handle all at once in such a short time
@@Alex-vz2jz As a person who love this movie and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (another convoluted mess of the best kind that feel like a better version of a philosophy book) I have to say that I'm glad that people like you even exist.
Also agree about the school part.
Can someone PLEASE explain the ending to me? ^^'
I’m just as confused but from the minor info I managed to gather from others is that by the end Watson did not turn to a corpse he just used the russian engineer’s method to store the note’s info inside his brain so that no one else discovers it (maybe?)
So he ends up losing memory of the one year he spent together with friday, haldy (orsmth), and that bodyguard. They end up watching over Watson, who forgot about them, in hopes he would one day remember them (I guess)
Friday obtained a soul through a strain while they were in Japan getting the notes, but was unstable (Idk y honestly) and as to how it stabilized by the end, well, I’m just guessing here:
Remember when Watson held friday’s hand while he was transferring the notes? And then while talking and losing consciousness Friday squeezed his hand? I’m guessing that’s when it stabilized. Now if u ask me y at the time I honestly dk but I think it was also a strain due to the weird crystals coming out of the notes? I think so at least.
Also while credits were playing Friday asks himself if he had rlly obtained consciousness or not, and if he had then when. So I’m guessing that they left it up to us.
Lets not forget all the Sherlock references thou, but if u ask me they were almost meaningless, only there to add smth like lore maybe? I found it useless tbh but all in all was a nice ride if u try to understand it
Sorry for all the text but hope it helps.
@@passantsalama5100 What you say makes sense. This movie was a mess
So much potential wasted
This might be word for word what I thought of the movie
Does anyone know what is even going in the ending fight scene.
It was a fking mess, what were even those green lights
I had a sinking feeling the story couldn't live up to the amazing visuals and I was right. Simply put, too much was thrown in my face to really be able to enjoy or understand the film. Still, I vastly enjoyed the beautiful steampunk element which is one of my favorite genre's and all the references from literature became a sort of game to me to see how many I could recognize. Worth watching once if you are a steampunk/literature fan.
3:42 whats the name of the ost that plays here?
Now, it's almost nostalgia.
ikr!!! the fantasy parts made no sense at all
maybe there is some connection between it all you'd understand if you knew the source material but I DID NOT and for me personally it was a weird cut from an interesting story with questions about the form and existence of the soul to... people controlling zombies via weird blue / green shock waves they magically create with magical.. shoes? a staff? or is it a magical ability a person just has..?? I don't know, I did not understand anything of it and it just felt so random like a fever dream
@@prisle , agree! Also wtf was in the end where Watson found his Sherlock (I suppose) and Friday was looking at them from the rooftop with still dead eyes?? I swear those famous names only made it all complicated even more xD

@@passantsalama5100, no, no, you've got a point there. Watson's missing memories actually explains some of the plot holes in the end scene. So thank you :3
could someone explain to me the post crédit scene?
My view on the movie is likely skewed due to my love for the worlds behind the story. That said, it needed more time. Their journey and the grand finale could easily have spanned three movies and have included a balance of plenty lovely world building and story.
Other than that, I felt rather sick after the stunt Karamazov pulled. I'm not sure if that's a good thing...
Were can we watch this???
You are all looking at this movie from an Americanized view. We like simple and tight storytelling. This is Japanese anime based on Japanese Manga. They have a completely different stylized view.
So basically it's Guilty Crown v2?
I thought it was pretty good, if a bit convoluted.
I want more!!!!!! This can't be finished will there be a part 2!!!???
I wish it was a TV show
Can someone tell me if the NOVEL this film was adapted from, was in terms of story the same as the film in both premise and impact? Is the book significantly different enough to be worth reading?
The start of the novel is really good but the last part is a bit confusion because Itoh (the original author) dieu from cancer and the stroy was left untouched for some times but the second writer didn't know what Itoh wanted for the end so he made it more vague but it could answer some of your questions that couldn't be answered with the movie

Awesome review.
Eu quero ver.
This movie is unrecommendable to people who are expecting a well written story based on such supposed rich genres. I'd recommend this to dull girls who likes to see pretty boys , tolerant enough who dont mind spending an hour to themselves think "what this story's all about" only to find out this movie gives you more questions than answers, would make a fun game to see who wouldn't get annoyed
I think you couldn't really grasp it, I strongly recommend you read "Animation & Animism" by Thomas Lamarre
I Think this anime is fantastic for movie. 👌🏽 I enjoyed it greatly, I think the narrator is trying to give people his understanding of the anime and not allowing people to see it for themselves. It's not as bad or as lacking in a lot of the areas that he's talking about. The anime is fantastic! 💥🎉
this is really good and I love your voice.
CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME THE FUCKING ENDING?!?!? WHY DIDN'T WATSON BECOME A CORPSE?! AND HOW DID HE RESURRECT FRIDAY??!?
Review is on point. I would say that even the first half hour was a lot to take - I constantly felt like I was missing something because of how fast it moved and how much it mentioned. Fell apart as a movie, and the characters seem okay, but they don't interact like humans...
It would've been better as a tv show series
It like a frankenstein/Sherlock Homes/historical fanfiction on acid.

Good now I dont have to wait for demo to review this, also awsome review needs more cage though...

I thought your voice was a seiyuu's
i would give it..7 out of 10. also because it's all fantasty.
i wish i saw this before i bought it- its premise seemed like ' this could be a unique find' but left me with action induced eye strain and a huge 'whats all this green shit' at the end. the constant impending death scenes to miraculous resets like a kid ramming toy cars together. and what a sick end that just seemed so perverse to what watson promised. the world was just a discussing nightmare that you would not want to see propagated as a franchise- imagine freinds/family being used as corpse slaves.
nicely done
nice video m8.
I really enjoyed this reveiw! it
had a vsauce 3 vibe
Отлично, теперь я зная что посмотреть на выходных
I saw that anime, it was an absolute fucking mess!
Me when i see Hadaly's metal arm
DAFUQ ANDROIDS
When i first saw her i knew something about her was up. Then as i started to pay more attention to her. it all made sense. The scene that gave it away was when she said she wanted a soul, she wanted to feel emotions. I knew she wasn't human.
Offtopic
I also thought about something else.
I had a college class back in highschool called philosophy of death
This had me thinking because in a lecture there was a talk about the soul.
The soul is unknown and well by many not even a thing.
Well when i was watching the movie and pay attention to Hadary Lilith (The robot)
i kept wondering what is a soul.
Sorry that i had to release all this on you. lol
@@Alex-vz2jz yea too bad the anime is a rollercoaster wreck if they gave in more time to build up hadaly it would have been awesome
