The fractured politics of a browning America

  • The US is getting more diverse. As more Americans realize this new future, it is changing how cultural and political divides take shape.

    We live in an America where television programs, commercials, and movies are trying to represent a browner country; where Despacito, a Spanish-language song, tops the Billboard charts and where NFL players kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality. We live in an America where politicians on the right and left appeal to voters, with explicit references to race.
    And researchers are now able to pinpoint how these indirect and direct are shifting political ideology.

      You would think if religious beliefs actually played into the white conservative understanding of these shifts they would be a welcomed. Catholic Mexicans and Muslim Middle Easterners share many social conservative values on abortion, homosexuality and even women’s roles in society and the home. But it’s strictly about race. The whole premise of the shift is about race, white Americans aren’t losing the majority just because of immigration, they are losing it because of how they understand race. No black American marries a white American and has white children, they are now black. Same goes for any other race. Whites are going away because of how our system defines race.

      Sooo... I'm a first generation US born from a family of south american immigrants (legal). Everywhere I go people look and treat me as "white". My first, middle, and last name are Spanish. Our ancestry (23&me) goes back to Spain (Iberia), making me European descent, but "Hispanic". This video discusses a growing "Hispanic" population as the "browning" of America, reducing the percent of whites. So does that mean I'm white? Am I brown? Which side of this am I on? Are European descendants from Spain not white? There's a lot I don't understand about videos and lenses like these. I'm told I'm white but also that I'm browning America for being hispanic... am I not white?

      Luís Filipe Andrade I’m not sure most people want universal healthcare. Has there been polling on this? I feel like most Americans would like it once it was implemented and benefit from it. But right now, it’s very scary to many because people see it as “communism”.
      And the stuff I’m talking about it true. Like 70 or more years ago when many other developed nations were implementing universal healthcare, it was on the table for the US. And it was stopped by racism by the way. It’s historical fact. I’m not playing “the race card”.

    • @enzodimasi8248
      @enzodimasi8248 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luís Filipe Andrade That’s good, in my opinion. If Bernie Sanders had won the Democratic nomination in either 2016 or 2020, we’d probably already have it or be getting it this year (because polling has shown that Bernie Sanders sweeps Trump in most scenarios). If Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or someone of her likeness runs in 2024, then we might have a chance, but a millennial Latina radical is probably less palatable to moderates than Sanders. However, she would definitely mobilize young voters and in 4 years there will be even more Gen Zers voting than today.
      But, if Biden wins and his presidency goes generally well, I’m guessing that we may see a Harris-Buttigieg ticket for 2024.

The same arguments people had back then we are having today but because today most immigrants are of a different race anti-Americans like to add race to the argument to stop any debate or questions. We should have an immigration moratorium and let those 60 million immigrants that have come here since the 1965 immigration Act assimilate and not be pressured by a constant flow of new arrivals creating a second homeland for them.

    Hello there.
    While you go through this comment section and see comments that will inevitably upset you no matter where on the political spectrum you are, i just wanna at least give you something positive out of all of this.
    The fact that we have people of differing political views is not at all an issue, but a sign that America is still a free place. So, instead of being angry at the other party, take a sec to appreciate them, as it's our differing views that keep us from simply turning into a one party oppressive state.
    Hope i could make your day just a little bit better.

    • @seabb
      @seabb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I’m all for positivity and respecting others opinions and all that, but I gotta say right now the political climate is that of rage and anger at all opposing sides. Everyone has different experiences so everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I feel like hatred and frustration at the other side does not make a net positive effect on the world. Best case scenario, one day in the distant future when we’re all tired of hurling insults, we can sit down, have a rational discussion and come to a compromise that makes everyone happy. Maybe I sound like “unamerican”, but I’d prefer individual opinions with an overall like-minded goal, over dozens of sides fighting and breeding hatred towards each other for the slightest differences.
      We are all people, and though we may have differing cultures and beliefs, it does not warrant hurting others to further your own ideals.

    I’m Mexican legally in the US and I completely understand, heck I don’t want to live near my Mexican neighbors, they’re a mess. And it’s not about being racist is just most migrants come from lower strata and with that comes lots of lack of education, crime problems, welfare consumption, etc.. so I completely get it. I know I will get hate from illegals or legal Latinos but it’s the truth. Not all are like this but a great majority. If Latinos we became self sufficient and the new generations hard working instead of popping out babies and living out of the state, I’m pretty sure the attitudes would be much different. Oh and stop being loud. I mean it’s not racism I see how whites live ok with educated Indians and do not fear them. They’re dark. It’s all about education and respect. If we Latinos want to be respected we should offer the same.

      Fernando All thats not gonna matter once white Americans hit that 49% minority mark. They are gonna shift attitude no matter the class of person because at that point they will realize that they have become a minority in the nation that they founded and that was spawned from their white colonial settlement in North America and will begin to feel like they are losing their nation. Yes, white Americans feel inside it’s their nation because it came from them and they were it’s supermajority for all of its history. Their attitudes will change and this will lead to a future civil war as the become aggressive over it.

      @idon'tevenknowanymore The problem is that some people think there is a whole agenda and white people are actively being replaced as part of this agenda. There is no grand scheme to replace white people. White people are simply not having enough babies to replace the people that are dying.
      Its no ones fault that white people are choosing not to have babies. More and more white women are choosing to have one or two children at most. Some white women choose to remain childless. Compare that to Hispanics who have lots of kids. Over time, the white population will fall and the Hispanic population will increase due to the disparity in birth rates. Its just basic logic.
