- So today Craig is going to look at political ideology in America. We're going to focus on liberals and conservatives and talk about the influencers of both of these viewpoints. Now, it's important to remember that political ideologies don't always perfectly correspond with political parties, and this correspondence becomes less and less likely over time. So, sure we can say that Democrats tend to be liberal and Republicans tend to be conservative, but we're not going to be talking about political parties in this episode. It's also important to note, that there are going to be a lot of generalizations here, as most peoples' ideologies fall on a spectrum, but we're going to try our best crosses fingers to summarize the most commonly held viewpoints for each of these positions as they are used pretty frequently in discussions of American politics.

I wish he actually bothered addressing the authoritarian/libertarian divide as well, instead of continuing to push the "left right political line" concept further.
+Kain Yusanagi yea me too. Most young people (like me) don't really understand the economic difference between left and right (for example: who's fault is the recession in 2008), but it's lot easier to understand the difference between authoritarianism and libertarianism.

Fun fact: the terms right and left cane from the French Revolution. When deciding what government the French people should have, the conservatives were seated on the right, the liberals were sitting on the left
I know no one cares, but I just want to say that when I have kids, I don't want them to adopt their political ideology based on mine, regardless of it's for or against mine. I want my kids and my grandkids to arrive at their own conclusions. And I also want to create a family atmosphere, where we can talk about our political views regardless if they clash or not.
That's sad to hear because kids are such open minds that teachers will take advantage and brainwash them for you. It might be a liberal teacher or conservative. For example, I would definitely take advantage. Think of the saying, if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.
@ng da you don't need to bring in your political views to teach right from wrong, though these concepts might be rooted in and/or correlate with political views. I believe, that kids should be trained in formal logic and critical thinking and be exposed to as much philosophy, literature and history as possible. That will make them capable of synthesising their own political, economical, social and moral views.
I admire that highly. Still provide an unbiased perspective on politics religion on society etc. so that they may come to a conclusion when they’re able to comprehend the world around them. Educating them would help them understand I believe and by creating an environment of communication as you suggest would allow for that to be nurtured and further develop.
Not me, the only reason I can see for having kids is for them to help bring to fruition my manifesto instead of it just being me, alone, scribbling it on to a cave wall with a piece of charcoal.
No, my way of thinking is logical so I want my kids to be logical thinkers as well therefore they will most likely follow my political views. It will make for less stressful holiday dinner when they get older

Daniel .DeRuyter Yeah I actually liked this one, I was expecting it to be like most videos where it’s really obviously biased but this was quite factual and tried to be fair to both sides and not have a bias when explaining it, I actually liked quite well how he explained my ideology, and that is extremely rare from most sources claiming to be unbiased.

In terms of the whole fact-thing, I'm quite annoyed by the comment about liberalism and progressivism. I understand the head-itchingly stupid, ideologically illiterate definitions of liberalism and conservatism because it's meant to be about american politics. But considering that "progressive" is probably a more historically accurate label than "liberal" (If nothing else, at least it actually means the opposite of conservatism), so the comment about liberals re-branding as progressives is kinda strange.

The problem of equality is if everyone was equal then there would basically be no point in living since if one person becomes better than another than it ruins the whole idea of equality. Liberty is where you start in the same position and branch off depending on the choices you make.

Personally, I'm centre right, I can see both sides but I lean more towards conservative. I totally agree with you, why don't they create a center wing political party that has views everyone can at least respect. Or create a new version of the Democratic and Republican party.

Tristan McCoy It’s unbelievable. In the US you’re either right or left, Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative. This two party political system basically polarizes the population and discourages free thinking.
“Oh, I’m a Republican therefore I must agree with all Republicans on topics X, Y, and Z.”
The point is, people can disagree with both liberals and conservatives. It’s called independent thinking.
In Australia, we have many political parties but media (Rupert Murdoch) makes sure that only two are ever given a chance at winning. Actually these days it's completely biased towards one party, which is our equivalent of the Republican party, which is ironically called the Liberal Party.

In Europe "Liberal" means economic liberal, and is generally considered centrist or centre-right. They support unregulated free economies while also being liberal in social issues. So similar to American Libertarians, but not as crazy, and more grounded in their ideology. The Left-wing in Europe is known as "Social Democracy". They grew from the laboyur movement and support labour unions, and today they support Government programs to address issues, regulation of the Capitalist economy and are generally Progressive in social issues.

In Britain we have the Liberal Democrats, and whilst the Liberal party before the merger were considered on the economic right, a 'brand' of Liberalism emerged called Social Liberalism. These believe in social liberty, but economic regulation in favour of personal and consumer rights. The Liberal Democrats sit both sides of the economic spectrum, but since Tim Farron took over as leader, it's fair to say we're a centre-left party now. So I identify as a Liberal, and am on the left of the economic spectrum, but I wouldn't identify as a Liberal in the American sense.

Europe has different kinds of left and right-wing too. There are plenty of religious rightwingers, pure socialists (not to be confused with social democrats), green parties, anti-immigration parties, labor parties, and many more. There is a high diversity of political parties compared to the US.
+OneManArmy Same case in Australia where our far left party is The Greens, centre-left the Labour Party (American Liberal) as well as minor parties on that side like the Liberal Democrats and with the right of center being held by the Coalition which is a consortium of the Liberal Party and the National Democrats. We also have/had the party Palmer United Party but no one really knows what the fuck they stand for as it essentially fell apart after it won a balance of 6 seats out of 33 in the Senate (essentially holding the balance of power votes).
And our election system is very different to the American version, i believe most EU and the UK have a similar preferential system to that used here in Aus

That's why the Liberals in Germany (the FDP) are considered a centre party. Some of them are more on the left, others more on the right, but they all share the same core values.

To start you have 'Anarcho-Capitalists', these "Libertarians" are more _extreme_ if you will than Moderate Right-Wing Libertarians such as Rand Paul. And far more "radical" than 'Fiscal Conservatives' .
On the "left" you have an ample amount of "Libertarians", like for example: "Libertarian Marxists", "Anarcho-Communist", "Anarcho-Syndicalist" and "Libertarian Socialists". Similar to those on the "right" these individuals desire an enfeeble government, and/or total abolition of the state. All of these people are described as "Ultra-Left", "Radicals" or "Revolutionaries".
Now if I omitted some labels I do apologize, and if I was ostensibly unfair to either "right" or the "left" I apologize.
P.S: I personally view Nazism as 'Ultra-Right-wing', Hitler described Nazism as "syncretic". Clearly Socialism is universally associated with the "Left", however within the context of Nazism, Socialism was relegated . Nazi Germany did not attempt to implement Socialism, Hitler and his inner circle coupled with the Capitalists, domestically and abroad. So if anything Hitler, though opposing Capitalism himself, could be described as left-wing economically, but socially his was very much an 'Ultra-Rightist'.
And his social views had a preponderance within his regime.
P.S (2): Also radicalism and extremism isn't appalling in it of itself, some ideas that may be produced from these _extremists_ leanings may work, they just happen to be out of the mainstream. That goes for the "left" and the "right".
P.S (3): Also regarding the "Left" libertarians some of the labels are often conflated and arguably they could be reasonably done so. But they do have their unique quarks and distinctions.

This comment will be a little biased (as I am left-leaning) but I think that one of the reasons people tend to dislike conservatives is because they come off as self-centered people that entrust god with everything and don't really care to listen and analyze other people's ideals.
In order to achieve equality we can't ignore that there are such differences. We need to realize these disparities exist and try to work together in order to fix them. We can't ignore the differences between black and white people, between men and women and between LGBT members and straight people. We need to acknowledge these differences and do everything we can to make sure everyone can live the life they wish and that they aren't discriminated for it.
That is why we aren't going anywhere with either communism or fascism. We need to find a good balance to make things work.
I know it is easier said then done, but we need to start small and grow from there.

A fear of govorment is rational, but the way to make sure that it doesnt happen isnt trusting agropolies to make decision that efect everyone (witch was the best point against full govorment control of the economy, a thing no liberal agrees with), its making a govorment that represent the people.

In my experience, Orthodox (most religious) Jews and Israeli Jews tent to be more conservative, while conservative (between religious and secular) and reform (secular) Jews tend to me more liberal. Ben Shapiro is Modern Orthodox, while the majority of American Jews are reform or conservative. This is not always true, but in most cases I’d say it is.
This whole video just told me that i agree with some of both liberal and conservative sides...

+MrJethroha Parties got fucked up by money, virtually all political parties are actually liberal and have no interest in reducing their size or spending. However, government parties that claim to be conservative tend to put out campaigns that appeal to conservatives and pay lip service to conservative views, even though they have no intention of actually putting them in place. Of course, dishonesty exists on openly liberal parties too, as Obama has proven quite eloquently.
We have more then two parties. It's just that we only ever vote for the two because all other parties are made up of extremists from the left and right.

You can have markets without capitalism, you can have markets without the state, you can have capitalism without the state, you could have a strong state and heavy capitalism, you could have capitalism intertwined with the state!
That's not even to get into the social aspects of different positions

What? social democracy doesn't think that capitalism is destructive and that control should be as much as possible lmao, That would be democratic socialism at least, social democracy adapts capitalism to a mixed, more "human" system. The difference between a liberal (not the american conservative definition) and a social democrat is that the first says that the market is better at solving problems and should be regulated by the state when necessary, and the second says that the state is better at solving problems and should be liberalized(?) when necessary, its the two sides of the same coin at the center of the political spectrum.

Liberty/Freedom is the most important value. Others being Life, and Property. 'Equality' is possible because of such values.
I respect your opinion and value your contribution to making the world a better place, and acknowledge that you desire to see the country be the best it could be. However, I disagree. Without some form of equality of opportunity, true Freedom is impossible, as our circumstances can artificially restrict our choices.

I know a lot of student's watching this to answer their module.
One important thing is that the term "liberal" is used in a very different way outside the US discourse. For example being liberal here in Sweden means that you are center-right and not particularly pro big govermment.
Libertarianism: Fiscally conservative, and socially not giving a damn.
And economically liberal ;) fiscal refers only to government spending.
Owlblocks David Libertarians are economically conservative as well. They are against regulations against businesses and are for flat tax despite individual income.
That's called economic liberalism. Liberal = free. Fiscally conservative (government doesn't spend liberally) and economically and socially liberal (laisses faire for both).
Owlblocks David Libertarians are for small government overall. Less spending, less tax, less power. Which gives the people power. Socially they lean liberals, except pro guns, but economically they are conservative. Because we want less tax and regulation.
Less taxation and regulation is economic liberalism. I don't think you understand what liberalism is.

+SirVolcy Because you have to limit freedom to create equality. Some people don't want a bunch of people with guns telling them what to do and how to think and what is right and wrong. True freedom is the freedom to succeed or fail on your own merit. Conservatives don't blame people when they fail, they blame themselves and try again. Liberals blame other people, and cry about how life isn't fair, so they get the guys with guns to force everyone to value them. That's not freedom, that's state slavery. If everyone is equal, everyone is poor. See the USSR, China, any other far left nation, etc.

When liberals talk about equality, what usually is meant is equality of opportunity, socially, and under the law. We clearly do not have that. I do admit that some legislation is misguided in an attempt to fix this, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything. If a person fails on their own merit, they failed on their own merit. Everyone knows that life isn't fair. However the big issue with conservative boot strap theory is that they forget that some people don't have boots in the first place.

As someone who's dipped into a bit of political science before, I have issue with how Americentric this video is. Liberalism in general means supporting individual freedoms and largely being against government control over it's peoples (think classical/social liberals), and conservatism in general means being supportive or protective of older traditions and values.
Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to me either. A liberal is supposed to be someone who's open to new ideas while a conservative is supposed to be someone who's more into keeping traditional values. I guess both sides kind of adopted which one suited them the most. Calling a right-winger a Republican and a left-winger a Democrat isn't technically right but whatever, it's 2019 I guess lol
It's weird in America because here our founding values are Liberalism, and thus are, in a way, the older traditions and values now for our society. We have a trend of very slowly increasing government control throughout our existence, and the more we increase government control, the more we risk pushing away from classic Liberalism, making classical liberals react conservatively against increases of power. This is not to say that all conservatives are classic liberals or that people in the modern day left cannot be classical liberals, simply that as we move towards more government, where classical Liberalism falls on the range of common ideologies shifts more and more to the conservative side since Liberalism is our old traditional ideology in America.
The entire series is about American government, it's Americentric by definition. If you saw the Party Systems video, you'd know the Gilded Age and the Great Depression kinda together inform the progressive/liberal movement in America - good government reforms, the trend towards protection of rights of minorities and civil liberties, the capability of government to alleviate poverty and direct the rebuilding of society.
Conservatism, at least on the social side, is much as you say, though a majority of self-identified conservatives since the Nixon Era have been reactionary authoritarians who support the curtailing of freedom and the crushing of dissent.
There is a difference between a liberal and a leftists...liberals support liberty and free speech while leftists support censorship however the term liberal is often used interchangeable with progressive/leftist.
Modern conservatives are not about conserving the status quo as much as they are about conserving our countries foundational conservative values as life, liberty, free speech and limited government
True liberals and constitutional conservatives have a lot in common but with different approaches to various issues

I was a far left liberal socialist for years. It was the liberals who convinced me to become a Republican. How?
If I point to peer reviewed statistics by the Justice Department showing that blacks aren't being targeted by the police... I'm racist. If I mention that it is possible for a black person to be racist against a white person, I'm racist. If I question flawed studies promoted by the left and want to have an intelligent discussion on them, I'm racist. If I believe in racial equality, I'm racist. If I say I have black friends, clearly, I'm racist. What it means to be democrat or liberal is *NOT* the same thing as it was in JFK's time. yeah, there is a very strong authoritarian left currently present - i like to think of them as McFeminists or McLiberals. they're the ones that call Bernie Sanders, a guy who himself calls himself a feminist, a sexist and racist. they hide behind their own hack idea of feminism and liberal and blindly call those that disagree with them as sexist or bigot - such as calling *all* trump voters sexist and racist without wanting to understand why they voted for him and not wanting to understand why hillary was such a flawed candidate.

I would encourage you to look more into what Republicans honestly stand for.
The problem with saying that conservatives' core value is liberty is that liberty conflicts with their adherence to and enforcement of traditional values. I would say that libertarians are really the people who value liberty above all else, whereas conservatives are halfway between tradition and liberty.

I feel like an opportunity was missed to mention the di-axised political spectrum, since Libertarianism was mentioned, and the opposite side being Statism (however I am a bit biased as I'm a libertarian myself). Though, to be frank, not many people openly profess a statist viewpoint because it's been thrown around as a slur by many politicians of today, but there is a growing amount of support for libertarian candidates, like for example Ron Paul, and it would have been nice to at least see some recognition for that, but given that there have been two main viewpoints so far, it's forgiveable.

One thing Europeans should know when watching American political videos. They don't use the political terms in the correct way, they have made their own versions for it. Liberal in the US means progressive left leaning politics, it don't actually have anything to do with liberalism at all.

I identify as liberal however I also have many conservative ideals. I do support family, tradition, morals, even religion. I am against the form of conservatism which manifests as white american nationalism, war mongering and so forth. Those conservatives are an embarrassment. I do believe in multiculturalism and support negotiating peace with other nations, only relying on military force should there be a clear and imminent threat to this country. Stay out of conflicts which don't concern us. I believe that for a healthy society we need to embrace our home but also be prepared to reform it, should something not work properly.
Something interesting is where you draw the line between what global matters concern a particular country in our heavily globalised society.

I respect my mother and father and have a close relationship with both, however, our political ideals are basically the opposite.
How fascinating and very educational to know more of which party I belong to. Watching this video also brings a sense of nostalgia of PBS shows (not to mention SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK) I’ve watched growing up in the 80’s and 90’s like: READING RAINBOW, NOVA, WISHBONE and SQUARE ONE. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

In the Philippines, Liberal means mostly social freedom and is sometimes linked with communism due to its position on the centre-left.

That was pretty helpful and unbiased, thanks. I was searching for a broader comparison of political ideologies and terms, where they came from, and perhaps how the words have been morphed into what they mean today in American politics (as explained well in this video). For example, people generally refer to “libertarian” as the specific thing the libertarian party supports, which is actually right -libertarianism, however there is also left-libertarianism which is kind of a more radical version of democratic socialism. Unfortunately, most videos are geared towards conservative/republican vs liberal/democrat however in the US today these are two positions that are not far away from each other on a grid (not a line) that’s extends very far in every direction. Both Democrats and Republicans (in practice) fall into the right-authoritarian quadrant, there is pretty much no representation of left, or libertarian, values in our government, even though much of the country would support these ideas. This is why our voter turnout is so low and everyone has lost faith in the current two party system.
It sucks how these two pre-packaged worldviews are the only two options we're allowed to have.
I was a classic left-leaning college student. Then I got hurt and spent 2 years recovering. When I returned, it was like almost everyone had a new set of values: Feminism wasn’t about having the same opportunities, it was about having perfectly half and half genders in every profession-bonus points for transgender people.
I was in favor of free speech and a proportional tax system. But when I returned, people wanted “hate speech” restricted, and “hate speech” includes anything you disagree with. So speech isn’t free. And proportional taxes were actually insufficient, and the wealthy need more taxes than that.
What happened? I used to be left-leaning, but now I’m right of center! I didn’t change my beliefs, I don’t think!
Abby C - the social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt, does a good job articulating the leftward shift of societies over time. You might wanna TH-cam him.
IMO the so-called progressives are deluded and misguided. You describe their commitment to equality of outcome superseding equality of opportunity. You also refer to third-wave feminism. These facets of the modern leftist ideology are in actuality quite regressive and detrimental to western society. It’s like we’ve learned nothing from the past and are doomed to repeat this endless cycle of human evolution and destruction over and over.

Hell yeah. I'm surprised how well (most) of the people responded, and how unbiased this video was. As a mostly conservative I really don't trust media to accurately portray my believe. actually have to do a lot of s*** through what I believe in. most people believe that since I'm a conservative I believe that all gays should have no rights and then there should be no government intervention with in economics. I just looked at what I'm replying to and I realize that this comment has no relevancy.
