MASSIVE Fabric Stash Organization! 15 years of hoarded sewing supplies ...

  • My stash was well beyond embarrassing. Not just the amount of fabric and projects I've accumulated in 15 years of sewing, but the stacks of bins just filled with fabric with absolutely no organization.
I needed to clear out the back room that my stash has been hoarded in for the past four years and I decided it was time to actually organize it instead of just move the mess.
I documented the process on TikTok and we have pulled all the videos together here so you can see me transform my fabric hoard from a flaming dumpster fire to a beautifully organized stash where I can see everything at a glance and actually use what I have.

Instead of the cost of the alligator clips ... go to your local dollar store and buy some bobby pins. They are coated and won't rust and a heck of a lot cheaper than the a-clips.

Great idea! Just make sure they don't rust... Ask me how I know about that!

When I've done this in the past two things will happen. I will go down memory lane and fawn over those favorite cherished fabrics. Or I will think to myself what in the heck possessed me to spend good money on this ugly fabric. All those now ugly fabrics turn into practice blocks or practice quilting sandwiches. And no more saving the pretty fabrics. Nobody can see them folded up. I put them in my quilts. Because there will always be more pretty fabric to buy!!!

This video was sooo narrow, with so much wasted space on either side 😢

Did you tell where you got these bins and their dimensions? If you did, I missed it, and I would like to know.

Stephanie, you definitely inspired me. I ordered the comic boards from you and the alligator clips from your link. May I ask the size of your three white bookshelves? Thank-you So much.

I watched your video long ago on folding fabric and using the Target Y-weave baskets and still use that method. I also use the project bins, but then don't know what is in each one and they seem to take up a lot of room. I got reusable labels, but haven't got them on the bins yet. Lately I've been putting the separate projects in plastic zipper bags and then putting the bags in the Y-weave baskets. I've been able to find things easier that way. Maybe I shouldn't have so many future projects, but when you like it you have to buy it, don't you? Your shelves look very nice and organized.

@Stephanie In response to this comment -- Do you find these new bins are more compact and space friendly than the Target Y-weave baskets you used to use? I totally understand the dust-free benefits but I was wondering if you found it was a better use of space too.

What I love about them is that they stack. The Y-Weave doesn't allow you to do that, so you either need very short shelves, or you have wasted space. Also with the clear bins allow you to see everything from the side as well, which is nice. We still use the Y-Weave bins for all of our remnants, but I like these better for my personal stash.

Will you ever use some of the fabric that you’ve had for a long time?

I make about 15 quilts a year, but they’re almost all for work. My kids are small and I do most of the running around after them, so I think my personal projects will be on the back burner until they are a bit older. Then I can dip into it more.

Honestly, it’s because our sales are way down. I get it. The first thing people cut when budgets get tight are subscriptions, so our Stashin’ with Stephanie fat quarter club is way down compared to a year ago. I came from an industry where people were cut to make the budget work, and I refuse to do that, so we’re going with smaller space to save money.
