- We have played The Lord of the Rings tabletop game for many years now, having only recently started playing 40k in 10th edition, its been very interesting seeing how the game systems differ. Today we discuss those differences, which is better? How could they learn from each other? Lets discuss.

Its MESBG all the way.
40k is fine and the lore is amazing but MESBG is just top bloody tier.
S TIERRRRRRRR
We agree! Didn't realise so many others did too 😅 though I'm glad they both exist 😁
As a player of both, its MESBG and it's not even close
MESBG no competition
To be honest, the wound chart for MESBG is basically the same as the system in 40k but just written down. equal STR and DEF is always a 4, if the difference is 1 or 2 you need a 5, for a diff of 3 it's a 6 and so on. Different numbers but the same basic idea
Thats good, a 6 over a 4 is a 2+ in 40k, not needing a 7 for a 6 instead, something else must be different in the lotr gsme, 40k used to be upto 10 strength max or "destroyer" weapons.
What is it in the lotr game? Never played it unfortunately
As a few others have said on here, lifelong fan of both. Fact is Middle Earth SBG is a MUCH better game. Main proof is the core rules have never truly changed for one. Lore wise im not touching that one but i know where i will go there and back again for.
Adding savings throws to MESBG is a terrible idea imo, rolling more dice and rerolls just lengthen the game. Fate is great attribute it does what it needs to do to separate big heroes.
Fate, might and banner re reolls exist for a reason already. Anything else is not needed i so agree.
To even compare the 2 is silly.
MESBG is the superior game and rules set.
I do love 40K tho, but my god is MESBG just the better game.
Why is it silly to compare them? They're both tabletop games produced by the same company? Makes perfect sense to compare them.😅
@@HistoryoftheAges you can compare them 100%.
But they are just such drastically different games. it's like comparing apples and oranges.
Both are great in their own right, but one is drastically better than the other (I play and love both)
One being better than the other doesn't mean comparing them is silly haha. I love both as well. So it was fun to discuss how they could both learn from one another 😊
You didn't discuss price. Middle-earth is much cheaper to get into and start playing standard point games!
Yeah good point!
But to do the full collection and dedicated terrain (which ive spent a lifetime doing it feels and am only part way there) is SUPER expensive. 40k can br collected very, very well compared to that strangely.
The way it was explained to me, Armor Saves were just built into an MESBG model’s Defence.
The move and charge concept, is much different when using a gun vs using archery.
Correct on defence stat. It represents a warriors overall ability to protect themselves. Armour adds +1 to the stat, hvy armour +2 and shields do a bit more too. Certian melee strikes have different effects too nowadays.
Hard disagree with the save roll for mesbg. That would severely unbalance the game, increase how long games take and it defeats the point of the strength vs Defence chart. Imgine how long it would take if a Horde army all had to roll extra dice for the save, plus if the save was a 4 up then it would mean 50% of the units survive. Time to break would increase significantly.
Yeah on reflection I've since changed my mind on this. You're absolutely right
In MESBG you must see a portion of models body, equipment and weapons do not count and can't be targeted, you can't target them if you can only see a spear or sword or banner, you can only target them if you see an entre body part like head, arm, leg or torso, seeing only a foot or hand doesn't count either
VERY happy to see new vids on this channel. Please keep them coming!!
😁😁 we are planning lots! 😊
As a fellow store owner when building your tables you are better off going more narative and cool rather than tournament.
We did that, but so many local players said they weren't interested unless it was tournament legal terrain. Must be a big competitive scene around here. Either way, we have both now lol
@@HistoryoftheAges Yep cater to the paying customer! Sometimes the tournament players are the opposite of that 😂
Best way to play it full stop. Some form of relaxed game with good company. Tounaments can work but are so easy to ruin at same time. 400pts gets you Sauron at the end of the day...
I play both, and god, MESBG blows 40k out of the water. Even before the absolute crap that 10th is.
It's more thematic, there's more interaction between players at every point, there's more tactical depth, the balance is *chef's kiss* and it actually rewards tactical play, unlike 40k where the strategy mostly comes down to list building and shooting the biggest thing.
I've always enjoyed middle earth more than 40k that said pre end times I thought fantasy was a bit than middle earth and though I think it's to early to call old world might also be a tiny bit better . But I would still recommend middle earth over fantasy because it's so much cheaper like not even close
MESBG player that recently dipped their toes into 40k. I prefer MESBG but the set amount of turns and dynamic turn based objectives of 40k do have some appeal where you can do something else than just kill eachother. Its hard to implement for MESBG due to the much lower movement.
Very true! Very similar to our opinion I guess 😊
Play on tabletop channel did a battle at helms deep with some custom rules for large scale battle and seemed great 👌
Yeah that was a very cool video!
Strange how the comments seem to favour MESBG much more than the comparative size of the two gaming communities would suggest. I also prefer MESBG - maybe algorithms are showing this to more MESBG fans?
MESBG is the best. The wound chart is actually pretty simple.
Middle earth all the way! I tried both still doing mesbg
I think you can better compare mesbg with some of the better designed spin off games like Kill Team. But yea, modern 40k is dogsh*t in comparison (I play both)
I would say mesbg is much closer to 40k than kill team
For me MESBG is the better rule set for me as all the rule are clear and make sense with no messy writing that cause a rule to be able to be read different ways. plus 40K rules and books are spread all over the places or are outdated so quickly really hard tell what rule to use or rule have written is wrong now because been change in some document but they didn't update another source that has the original rule.
Also involving wounding system between two system yes 40K ones lot easier to remember but for 8th & 9th edition it cause Vehicle to pretty much be made of paper because different between Toughness and Strength but this was fix in 10th mostly with unbound Toughness and nerfing number weapons. if you introduces it to MESBG it would break the game as current S & D would not work as creatures with D higher enough that need 6 into 4 would just be 6 now. This would allow weight of dices from range or melee be able take out large threats that take big chunk of armies points much more easier as only way make up for this would give more wounds, armour save or feel no pains this bloating time to play and having remake whole interaction of the game. it also make low strength weapon feel weird as either going hit the 6 needed to wound earlier compare to currently or be just as effect as other higher more common Strength that run into the need 6 moment. example would common strength of bow being 2 or 3 appending on faction to would need 6 at Defences 4 this would suddenly make number of armies a lot tougher to kill with them where 2 just good as a strength 3 bow moment you hit defence 6 meaning any unit that has Defences 7 and higher would mean nothing now to those common strength in the game. so in the end it mess with a lot with MESBG system
Sorry for large paragraph just want make point about some of the trouble with 40K wounding system that they brought over from side game as does make it simpler but took 3 addition to get vehicle working as removed 7th and older face and armour rating plus made some weapon fill lost there place in the game as other were just one take as other had no reason to be used now. I do still play 40K and have found 10th has been more fun with friend as more causal and we had trouble with all Stratagems older 8th & 9th as over 20 per faction with quite few that just were gotcha moments. i do get whole new system rush and new stuff coming out always seem fun but I have gotten tired as seem like every other week game has change drastic in points or how whole rules work or abilities. there really no easy provided way to keep up with game workshop unless spending all time on there site and checking all the time. but glad enjoying 40K and all.
Also, the MESBG lore is better.
The lore doesn't really come in to play in this convo as Middle Earth earth lore was not made by GW. 40k is their original IP.
@@HistoryoftheAges Yes, but I find MESBG more enjoyable because of the lore.
"Warhammer 40k vs Middle Earth Strategy, which do you prefer?"
D&D. I prefer D&D.
Well, now that's a completely different game 😅
Neither. Fantasy is back, baby!
Overall I play both and prefer MESBG
But wtf what is going on with deployment in MESBG is bad imo, I dont get why they are enemy cavalry spawning next to my archers and such
40k have deep strike but it make somewhat sense and it can be played around
MESBG easy
AoS > Necromunda > Warcry > Kill Team > 40k
Never seen anybody be more wrong
The games aren't really comparable.
They are fundamentally targeting different players, collectors, painters etc.
40k as a game system... Is terrible.
It's clunky, not respecting of your time and a host of other issues.
MESBG is stable.
The scale thing, MESBG is true 28mm scale. That's what it's meant to look like. 40k is filled with these big, blob models that are just a nightmare.
There's no competition. 40k is inferior in every way
Of course they are comparable. They are tabletop games made by the same company 😅 but yeah you’re right… when compared, MESBG is clearly a better system
@@HistoryoftheAges okay yes they are comparable... But it's comparing hand gliders to parachutes. They slow you down... That's the similarities. They don't look the same, they don't have the same function. You interact with them differently.
