What or how should I run irrigation/drip tubing from a splitter at my hose bib to a raised planter and potted tree? This system will have to be trenched under the pavers I am having installed for my back patio? Should I run white pVC?

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The last time I installed under a sidewalk, I ran PVC inside a bigger ABS pipe. That way if I had problems, I could pull it through or replace it. But after 12 years, still no problems. So yes, I ran pvc. But I'm not an expert on plumbing. Also, for the raised planter, watch this video. th-cam.com/video/77z_UisxYxM/w-d-xo.html

You gave great advise as to the do's and don'ts along with comparing different ways to set it up. I'll likely play a little with it over the season to find what works best for me.

Wow, I have watched several months of these videos, most from commercial and professionals, however, I was still unsure or afraid to tackle this because they made it seen so complexed. Please note:
Place your filter immediately after the back-flow presenter (2nd in line in this assembly). This catches any debris before it enters any of the other components attached down stream. This is especially important to do BEFORE the pressure reducer where any debris can plug-up and actually end-up reducing the PSI below the targeted PSI and restricting MORE water-flow/rate than you had intended.
    Hope this helps !
Great video - esp. like when you mention that there are a "million" ways to build your system - that is right on !

I have a large implementation, multiple zones in every direction around my property. I rarely plumb two areas the same way. Each setup requires some uniqueness based on water availability, physical layout, and what is being grown. For an instructional video, the depth is very good.

yes PVC leaches out known carcinogens and hormone disruptors like phthalates, BPA or BPS; that is why it is not recommended for drinking water or to water vegetable gardens; alternatives are lead free brass fittings, plastics made from recycle codes 2,4 and 5 and hoses made from polyurethane

Generally, it is suggested that the pressure regulator come after the filter, since the filter will have a pressure drop across it that varies with total flow and any filter screen sediment. That just give a more consistent pressure delivered. Also, for many of the vacuum breakers the manufacturer says that they are not rated for continuous pressure or they will fail prematurely. If that is true for the one in use, place it downstream of the timer (or just shut off the faucet every time when done watering).
Thanks for the video -- so clear and every second full of info.

Excellent instructions and explanations. I was glad to see you added the onscreen mention of placing the pressure reducer before the timer. I had a more expensive programmable timer that cracked after one season because it was first in line from the faucet. All that constant pressure took its toll. I didn't catch if you said what state you are gardening in, but my experience here in Texas is that the emitters attached to 1/4 lines can blow off the hose barbs when the temperature gets way up. I used small wire to act as hose clamps before giving up on that method entirely. Your emitters in 1/2" line is much better. DIG makes a product called Dripline where the emitters are part of the hose, but again it is 1/4" line and that softens up a lot in the heat. I would still wire clamp them at the barbs. Covering the lines with mulch will also keep the joints and lines a little cooler, and help conserve water. Thanks for a great video.

Hey first off great tips on setting up an irrigation system. My garden has a really cheap drip running through very little of the garden. I didn't think it was going to work, but by covering the soil with wood chips and bark the water didn't evaporate and the water seems to spread to the entire garden. So I ended up covering about 2 square feet for every 1 foot of pipe and it worked great and saved me LOTS of time from watering the garden with a hose.

I use the 1/4 inch tubing, but will try the flag emitters after watching your video. One thing I do that is helpful when working with any drip tubing - 1/2 inch or 1/2 - I bring a thermos of hot water to put the end of the tube in for about 15 seconds and then any tubing will connect to an adapter or connector with ease.

Recommend your filter is the first thing to keep dirt and gunk from getting in your timer and pressure regulator (keep em clean, they last longer). I'm not sure if the timer would be affected by putting the pressure regulator before it, it may affect the run times, but if not would keep the pressure regular for it too, smother operation and longer lasting. Great info, thank you.

This will be perfect for to beat Heat this summer for my watermelon hills. Watermelons need so much water I don't want to have to think about it I can set it and forget it. Thank you for such a detailed video. Cant wait to customize to my garden. After watching i think id like this through out the rest of my garden.

Really well done! Good sound and video; very clear. It needs to be as long as it is; the systems have a lot of parts and many possible configurations. I have read the instructions a dozen times for drip and there is nothing like seeing a system being set up. I am emboldened to put my system(s) together this week.Thank you for taking the time to make this video available to us all.

Thank you so much for your extensive detail on your drip project. Planning on setting up drip for next year. I particularly like the rigid pvc feed underground to the beds. You have given me much to think about for the project.

Thanks again for your helpful training. I purchased most of the items shown in your video today. I know amazon loves me and the shipping people not as fond with their new work load increase. I said hey more job security the carrier complained about the weight. Anyhow just works better to order than driving to a store sometimes it wasn’t always like this back in the day was more driving and work on the consumer. Anyways I even purchased the grapevine arbor to go with my grape and other citrus trees 🌲. Well I’m good at the present just waiting on 10 foot ladder to finish installing harbor freight greenhouse. Thanks again for the tips~

ow my god sir.. you're amazing.. now I have understood how this dripping system works.. I still need to study the water pressure, amount of water requirement, the pump water discharge requirement.. the calculations..

I'm not the creator of the video, but I just bought everything he shows here at Home Depot. There's an aisle for "Irrigation" and everything except the PVC and the Y-splitter were there. PVC was in the next aisle over and the splitter was in the garden department. My advice: put the system he describes in the very beginning of the video together while you're at the store. I ended up needing an extra connector between the timer and the pressure regulator.

Great info. You convinced me to go this route. I’m designing my first drip system for raised beds, mulched flower beds, and fruit trees. Thanks 😊🙏👍. Gonna start with my raised beds to get the hang of it.

Thanks for the vid. I'm starting a garden of vegetables for the first time and I appreciate all the help I can get, but I found yours especially useful, so thanks. One thing that irritates me though is that I didn't watch this before I already purchased my 1/4" drip system! Oh well, guess I'll upgrade.

Thanks for info. I had 1/2 inch line run underground by a sprinkler company It has been in ground since 1985 and that part is fine.No filter, wish they would have put one in. I don't think I can get one in the box for the zone without digging the box out & I don't think it will fit. Laser drip lines were run in areas & pinned down, they will run 16 ft.each, You are right about dirt or bugs and cleaning them.

This was such an awesome video!
I am putting in a drip irrigation system for the first time this year and was really stumped as to how to run it back to my garden which is at the end of my lot.
The PVC pipe idea I'll definitely be doing.
Thanks for breaking it down and demystifying it all!
