The Bloody Espinosas: Rocky Mountain Killers

- When Felipe Espinosa and his younger brother Vivian were feeling bloody, the bodies were sure to follow. And in the spring and summer of 1863, there was certainly no shortage of bodies. Some victims were shot at long distances while others were casualties of more close-in work with blade or axe. And most were mutilated; beheaded, disemboweled, desecrated, or otherwise molested. After several failed attempts, the U.S. Army finally hired half-breed mountain man Tom Tobin to hunt down Felipe Espinosa. Tobin had been out west since he was a 14-year-old and had a unique set of skills that made him invaluable when it came to being a manhunter. Who were the Bloody Espinosa brothers? What caused their murderous tirade? Who was Tom Tobin and was he successful? My name’s Josh and your listening to the Wild West Extravaganza!

Don’t sell yourself short. You’re a natural story teller with a decent sense of humor
Josh is like the well-read smoke circle friend who always knows all the details that you don't about all your favorite history subjects. A kinda smooth cross between George Carlin and Louis L'amour. In my humble opinion.
@@0taintedlove433 he can spin a yarn and make it interesting.
@@0taintedlove433 exactly
Man, I'm 55 and would have paid anything for a history teacher like you back in the 80's
Isn't that the truth thankfully for me my grandpappy was a great storyteller and a history buff, although not as skilled as this young feller is.
I'm 78 and when I was a kid way back in the day I used to love to listen to stories from guys who fought in the Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Korean Wars. Those old dudes kept me enthralled with their stories. Now that I'm the grandfather of seven grandkids the little bastards don't want to hear a word I have to say. They're all too damn busy playing on their smartphones!
I agree 💯
@@catholiccrusader5328 I know how you feel. Go to visit my kids and grandkids they will all be on their phones. I get up quickly, slip out the door and they don't know I'm gone for an hour!
@@catholiccrusader5328 I would love to hear any stories you feel like telling. 78years should give plenty of material
The world could really use a few more Tom Tobin's right now
Tom Tobin was a fascinating character. A legend in his own lifetime and one of the all time great frontiersman of the old west. The espinosas stood absolutely no chance with this guy on their case.
They killed not because they were mindlis killers but because they were angry
"Every monster was a man first." I spent a great amount of time in far remote Australia. I understand why they couldnt just become farmers. I still have a hard time sleeping in a room and getting up for organised work and regimented routines. Great video again. 👍
Keep it up, Josh! You're doing a great job! We love the podcast!
Thanks man
Got The Crew Listening To This On A Granite Job. They Love it Keep It Up Man!
I will agree you are the best storyteller about the Wild West characters and Legends.
As a young girl the Wild Wild West was always my favorite Saturday afternoon movies. As a young adult would watch him late night TV.
But now, I get to learn the truth about them all from someone like you. 👍 Yee-haw
Haha thanks
Kit Carson was my grandmother's 5th cousin. Her name was Pliny Mabel Carson. I'm a big fan of all your stuff
Wow, that's pretty cool
Kit Carson is a ancestor on my mom's side.
Excellent episode, its fascinating to me to think that stuff like this was going out west while the Civil War war was occurring in the east.
I always appreciate your take on history thanks for allowing me to listen looking forward to the next one have a great day
Thanks for listening!
Congratulations on your 50th episode! I loved the swap and think that you both did great! Definitely got me listening to his podcast.
Thanks Cory
Always have listened just because of your delivery plus of course your accuracy and knowledge
It's much appreciated
Awesome! Keep up the great work! Best podcast going...it ain’t even close!!
The history of New Mexico is violent and bloody, from the first encounters of Europeans and Native Americans, the Tiguex War, Pueblo Revolt, Lincoln County War, too many to list.
Young man, I do enjoy your podcasts for the lively way you tell them and your unbiased approach. Do keep up the good work.
Thank you, Larry
Nice job Josh , very interesting, educational and professional working class entertainment…..
Another great history lesson on an unknown character. Great stuff.
Whip it!
Whip it good... 🤣
The cool thing about being a late comer to your show is that I don't have to wait until the next episode... I've a ton of your study, and stand-up, to enjoy!
Peace to your house, brother... And if you ever make it over to So. Cal way I've got an ice cold TRADER JOSE with your name on it (also available at a Trader Joe's near you 😁)!
Stay frosty, Josh 😎🤙
Boom!
You good sir are an accomplished story teller!
I would love to see an episode on Pierre-Jean De Smet. He was a priest who went west. He lived with natives. He was influential on Tom Tobin and Kit Carson becoming Catholic.
My 2nd great grandfather was Kit Carson's nephew and came west to work for Kit in the 1860s. He knew Tom Tobin who told him how they'd fire an old rifle quickly in case of Indian attack. Basically a notched circle of leather that they'd put a rifle balls held by wax...sort of an antique speed loader. Also showed him old buffalo trails near Timpas, CO. Tom Tobin's daughter married Kit Carson's son William. One night Tom and William were drinking and got into a fight over Williams treatment of Toms daughter. Surprisingly William got the better of Tom, hitting him in the head with a hammer and shooting him. Tom survived and oddly they remained friends afterward. I read somewhere where a son of Tobin was accidentally killed during the tracking of an escaped prisoner. During the search, Tobin's son was crossing a bridge when others in the posse mistook him for the escaped criminal, shooting him dead.
That's cool!
@WildWestExtravaganza unless you's crossing the damn bridge! LOLOLOL
Keep it up man you're doing a great job 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I am a direct descendent of the Bloody Espinosa's and live in Denver
Your ancestors are heroes!!! Be proud of your heritage no matter what others say
Eres matón tambien?
I am too and live 5 hours from Denver. Small world.
We’re related probably lol Felipe is my grandfather

Josh - Like the new YT handle. You deserve more subscribers … hope the more descriptive name helps. Keep up the great narratives.
Great story..The Hawken...Fud gun of it's day.....How do you accidentally throw away not one but two heads ? Thanks for pointing out the Harpe Bros. ...Were they REALLY related to the Earps I wonder..
Love Bloody Beaver too --(that sounds wrong ) esp since my mother said stay away from bloody beavers...didn't say it quite that way though.
Another great podcast. Thanks for mentioning me in the shout outs. Can't wait for the Chief Joseph episode. Can't remember if I already asked you but I watched a wild west documentary that mentioned a gang called The Rufus Buck Gang. Would you be interested in do a podcast video on them? I don't know much about them myself.
Another great podcast.
A lot of old cowboys used their old cap and ball revolvers until the late 1800's.
Very true. A revolver was a prize possession.
I just want to say that I love your work!
Ah thank you!
The ONLY channel I give a hang about
Thank you!
Hey👋 Josh, I'm new here. I love voice, side comments, and how you tell a story. Keep it up. 👏😊🤗

I'm back! This one is going to be one of my favorite late night episodes.
Another grate history lesson by the Silver Tonged Kid. OUTLAW UP and keep up the great work. It can't be easy holding down a job and doing all this research. So hats off and drinks up at the Outlaw Saloon in San Antonio for the most badass story telling Sumbitch Josh.
👍 that going blind comment had me choking on my coffee good show.
What happened to Bloody Beaver was it too Raw? Just an idea do one on Cullen Baker the man who was supposed to been the first to use the fast Draw
Still the same podcast. I just wanted a name that actually reflected on the content so more people could find it. Cullen Baker is most definitely on the list!
Outstanding!
Thank you!
My god girl that is a colt dragoon, It’ll sure do the job, that is if you can find a fence post to rest it on while you take game
At first I didn't care for your style, but you've grown on me ! I now feel like we're friends, I'm an old man in south western Arizona, 20 miles north of Sonoyta Mexico, there's a fellow about 50 yrs named Tobin lol
I love the 23 and 1 guy loves the wild west characters. Yhaaaa
If you can source this amount of information on the Espinosa Brothers, I'd like to see you try your hand at Three-Fingered Jack.
I wonder if Tom Tobin was at least a partial inspiration for Gus McCrae from Lonesome Dove. His skill with a rifle and the night time fireside ambush leaving his unwanted backup behind plus some other less delicate aspects reminded a lot of Gus.
Alright! More new content. I caught the host swap the other day. Good segment. But I do prefer my Beaver Bloody!
Throw down a towel!😆😆😆😆 That's why I'm here. That $h*t right tgere!😆😆😆👍
What happened to all of the enthusiasm, saying ‘The Wild West Extravaganza’ in the intro?
Awesome!!
Tom Tobin's buckskins are in the museum in my hometown. Alamosa, CO.
Very cool
Good job !!
The history given in your documentaries is great but would just another dull uneventful transfer of information if not for your colorful comedic yet factual commentary. But anyway, yeah, pretty sure you are the reason people be listening to! Peace
Thanks man
Thanks. This was very interesting.
Thank you Jenny
You rock thank you !!!
I know its not Old West but two interesting figures from early America are George Rodgers Clark (Williams older brother) and Simon Kenton. Both of their stories are worth looking into if you run out of gunslingers and outlaws. Another interesting set of names is "Radisson and Grosiellers(?)", the two French dudes that were the first white men to paddle around the upper Mississippi and the Great Lakes.
Grasshoppers through a sage bush that's a neat one I haven't heard that one. I have heard some westerners say he could track a fire ant through a cornfield.
I'm directly related to Thomas Tate Tobin, his rifle and revolver are on display at a museum in Cody Wyoming, they where donated by my great grandfather
Very cool!
Much love from mississippi
Hello Mississippi
Yall keep up the good work
Crazy to think all those people the Espinosa's killed, how helpless they felt at the hands of those crazy killers, just for one man to snuff them out in a matter of seconds, like it was just another casual hunting trip for him.
Spent some time in my youth climbing in the Sangre de Cristo range. Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle my favourites. Kit Carson Mtn also in that range.
Very cool. Hope to go there one day.
An aging old-man principle worth keeping in mind for self respect for all ages.
" Maybe I ain't as good as I once was in time but can still be as good 'once', as I ever was. "
Yea, and still don't need no stink'n pills! LOLOLOL!!!
Not sure how I've watched this one more than once and didn't comment for the algorithm. My bad.
Flagellation like that sounds like the Benedictine monk in the Roman Catholic in “The Da Vinci Code”
New information. Never heard of him. Mighty entertainin'. Thanks. And you don't have to apologize for bein' a Texan. I'll forgive ya.
Consider that what Espinoza actually said to Tobin when he asked "Do you know who I am?" was "Brujo", which in Spanish means "Sorcerer"....mebbe Demon come to claim his "Due". Given the "Sick Feck's" vaguely religious inclinations, this would make sense, no? Assuming that Tobin wasn't Fluent in Spanish & heard him clearly, of course
Good Stuff
After you told how they describe him after the that 9:39 whit that smile i tought about maybe the first Joker in history
Hmm, that looks like a double barrel rifle.
I grew up in the slv just east of Antonio in a little town called Mesita... I've heard this story since I was a kid
I haven't been there but I've seen a lot of pictures of the Antonio area and it seems really beautiful. Especially when everything is green.
@@WildWestExtravaganza it's not green very often... At least it wasn't when I was living in the area
@@justinbarbee5917 all I know about that area is what I've seen on youtube haha. I'm assuming those videos were filmed on very irrigated ranches.
You obviously mean Scottish bagpipes bro lol great pod cast
love the podcast i listen to them at work and have listened to everyone of them i think one on the real outlaw josey whales would be really cool his name was bill smith
I like your plain spoken style!
"A head weighs less than a body."
Good job bud
The snail trail warning lol get a towel
I'm ready....I've donned my 'Smartass Cap', and I'm RTR!
Good play on words
Just refreshing my memory since alot of characters are in different videos. Still love the bugle.
That 600 actually Sounds like Not Enough!
A lot of missed history here
William hale and the killers of the flower moon would be a good one for u to do. They made a movie with de Niro and decaprio and Jesse plemons. Easy on the okies please
Felipe is my great great great grandfather
Philippe didn't want his brother's arm as a Keepsake he was just hungry after all that running and hiding
Flatulence….😂 that never stops being funny. Ever.
They saw their father killed with an axe to the head, mother and sisters raped when they were small. This story told to me by my grandfather told to him by his father who lived in arroyo hondo and later in herfano valley in colorado during the time line
The Espinosas by all right went on a defending spree 🎉
Can you all imagine how hard life was back then? I doubt that there are very many men living today who if were somehow transported back in time would be mentally and physically tough enough to survive more than a year living as those old mountain men did.
It would take quite an adjustment
Fun fact Thomas Tate is a ancestor on my mom's side. And The Bloddy Espinozas are ancestors on my dad's side.
He was a great grandfather and the Espinozas were great cousins. I have a weird family history
@@MommaKy3 I'll bet Family Reunions were a Real Hoot, back in the day

ESPINOSA 4 LIFE...
Felipe is my 3rd grand uncle
I'm interested to hear any family stories you might have
@@WildWestExtravaganza I don’t have any stories just my cousin has a family tree and he had mentioned we are related to him.
Very cool!
Not to be confused with self flatulation
So it's not like if Tobin killed Felipe face to face. He snuck in the cover of night and shot unarmed Felipe and Jose.
Nothing special about that man.
Josh-From a marketing perspective the porn/sex references will probably limit your audience. It does not bother me, but if you want more subscribers and likes, just a perspective.
Pretty sure thats a 10 gage double barrel.
For the record - I know one "part" Irish guy who has something in common with the Colt Army Model.
Ah yeah! New BB....ahem.... I mean ... WWE.
Now everyone is a Felipe descendant 😂😂😂
It's called vendettas. Not revenge.
Sorry
@@WildWestExtravaganza oh little brother. I didn't mean it in a mean manner.
If you killed all I ever loved , I would have a vendetta. If you stole my cow , Revenge is mine said the lord. Big difference. Just trying to educate. I enjoy listening to you.
I have great uncles and great grandfather that was in the Texas rangers. As I am a third generation Texan. Carry on with your education of the masses. And if I comment it's done in a like manner.
