  • Choosing the right tempo for your excerpts during trumpet auditions is incredibly important. If you steer too far from what a committee expects, it can really hurt your chances of advancing. This is because committees will assume you don't haven't listened to the excerpts and don't really know what you are doing.     How would you approach something like the Leonore off-stage solos where there is an accelerando?

      If you didn't have much familiarity with it, I suppose you could listen to a bunch of recordings to get a general idea of an appropriate tempo with this method. But, once you get the idea of the excerpt, playing with rubato is fine. If you chose to play it at a slower tempo, you could keep it strict for that, if you were looking to solidify some production related goals.
