You are correct on how much time you should spend on exercises or music .I appreciate that ypu are kind enough to give trumpet players this great advice .
Ryan is a great coach, and teacher, I have learned a lot from him. I come from the same is from a different angle but trying to make the same point. This is an issue in coaching sports by coaches and players alike. Your told to do things just for the sake of doing, without any goal in mind or just for the sake of getting getting better...this generalized goal means nothing, and us not a real goal. And Ryan mentions this... So every exercise has a specific goal, the more specific the better, be critical. More fluid in my scales, better articulation of my scales, K tonguing, add metronome to these goals. The more specific the goal, the better the feedback and you begin to see what is getting better means. Just a different way of making the same point.
