- Do you need a matte box for your camera setup? Aside from matte boxes being REALLY COOL.... what do they actually do?
SmallRig's Modular Matte Box system aims to level up how matte boxes are used and, if you ask me, it's worth it.

Do the adapter rings in this set have threaded to screw-in a circular VND filter?
Ive resisted and made my own over the years, and really only for specific lenses. However these new ones are pretty sexy!
I am lost. How did you buy a three tray system instead of a one tray system? It looks like it comes with only one tray and you can purchase two additional trays.
Oh I just bought two addl trays with the kit when I was ordering it.
Hey Nick. Great video. Can you use a CPL filter with this system as well and if so where would it fit in? Thanks mate.
Yes, absolutely you just need to add more filter trays.
Great video, Nick. *Thank you* 💥
My pleasure!
Much appreciated!
Thanks
I wanted to get this, but for my MFT system it's too large, wish they made a smaller model with 68 mm diameter.
Awesome video thank you!
I've seen these but they're still unavailable to buy... I'm looking for a light mattebox that I can stack more than 2 trays for 4x5.65... have you seen any equivalent to this one?
Tilta has great options
Why not mention the actual name? SmallRig Revo-Arcane
What are your thoughts on the variable ND? I’ve heard it’s got some design problems without being hard to rotate.
Also would you know if the variable ND works flipped around without vignetting (so the gear adjustment is in a better location on your left hand instead of right side)
Seems to work either way. It is a bit stiff, though.
Hi Nick, great video. I have a question about the matte box and my existing VND filters. I use Canon RF lenses, and have a significant investment in my VND filters that fit my lenses (screw on). Can you confirm that the adapter rings would screw on to my lens, and then my existing VND would then screw on the adapter ring? And if I use an 82mm adapter, then my 82mm VND would screw on to that adapter ring? Keep up the great and informative videos!
Jus took a look and all of the step up rings that adapt to the matte box have threading on them so you should be good to add your own screw on filters.
Proprietary bs is the biggest reason I haven't jumped on the polar pro system. What I've wondered with the smallrig one though, can it be mounted by 15mm rods
Yes and that’s actually my preferred method. It gives the lens support, too. Love using the 15mm support. It comes with the matte box.
Hey Nick, great video! I'm wondering if the VND can be used in other 4x5 mattebox systems? Like is it as big as 2x filter trays and could be used in any mattebox or is it proprietary to smallrigs system? Thanks!
Also, can the empty filter trays be used with other matteboxes as well?
It’s based off of standardized 4x5.65 sizing so… I guess it should fit into two frame matte boxes. The only thing to consider is that some matte boxes have individual frames per tray slot and there may be a small separating piece in between each slot so try to use one that doesn’t have that.
@@imnickfriend Got it. Is the thickness roughly the same as 2 filter trays? Or would there be potential for light to leak in between that and say a 3rd tray? Thanks.
