      My always-on filter is the Tiffen Black Satin 1. Compared to the Black Pro-Mist, it has a subtler and more natural-looking highlight bloom and contrast reduction and does a great job softening fine details like wrinkles. To me, the Black Pro-Mist is more of an “effect” (an amazing one!), and the Black Satin just makes footage and photos look more (here come the buzzwords) “filmic” and “organic” without being too obvious.

    • @JeremyHalterman
      @JeremyHalterman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makestuffmike The 1/8 and 1/4 are the most popular strengths. The 1/2 is a _lot_ of effect, so if you went with that you’d probably still want a 1/4 for times when you don’t want it to take over the shot. So... both 🤪

    Mark you're great! ♥ Can I add a filter on another one without adapters if they have the same size, for instance 77mm? so I’d like to put a black mist on a 77mm diameter lens and then a nd+cpl filter on the black mist. Without holder or adapter can I?
    Thank you for explaning I really appreciated! ☺ I have a question for you, thank you in advance for answring... I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.

    Romanticising film with the explanation "digital is just ones and zeroes" is misleading and unhelpful.
    Film is as unnatural as digital (or as natural)
    You cannot just shoot film and experience it right there as you would a real life event, the film has to be processed and then saved onto more film (or some other medium like vhs or a digital copy) and then has to be projected.
    Does film look good? Yes. Is it better than digital? Objectively, no. I have heard many many professional cinematographers say that digital sensors are superior to film as they reproduce more details that were present in the scene, they are also cleaner and easier to work with. Is film bad? Environmentally, yea; but otherwise no. Everyone has gotten used to film, everyone feels comfortable with film and that's why it's still used in movies today. Everyone loves the blooming and grain cuz they have gotten used to it, they look cool in some situations but, just because you have blooming on film, doesn't automatically make it better (for eg: I don't see grain at night, I don't like grainy film, it looks like crap and pulls me out of the story especially if it's a "realistic" film or docu)
    If you still think film is clearly more natural looking than digital... Maybe do some research on human biases, and how our eyes see light (spoiler alert, very similar to digital sensor). Those are 2 different topics, not one big topic. If nothing, atleast you'll learn something new.
    Have a nice day/night
    Cheers 😊

    • @TheSpecterRanger
      @TheSpecterRanger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Film is objectively better in certain ways. Film has no compression, and doesn’t crush whites or blacks. The way that film emulsions captures an image versus digital photo pixels are significantly different. The light curve on film is more natural. Digital sensors use algorithms to adjust how the pixels detect different levels of light to simulate a natural looking curve. Film captures a frame in a single continuous time frame, while digital sensors temporally pixelate the information. By their very nature, film captures light in a more “natural” way. That doesn’t mean it is indistinguishable from your eye’s vision, but that isn’t what people claim when they say it looks natural. Cinematographers use digital because of it is more convenient by an order of magnitude. The “detail” is higher in digital only if you are comparing it to a film with grain size larger than the pixels. Accessible 4k cameras will be more detailed than an accessible 16mm camera image. But that is not the fault of the nature of film, because you could shoot with 35mm or 70mm, but those are significantly more restrictive in terms of cost and ease of use. If you are strictly talking about image quality, comparing clarity is futile because in both mediums they are only limited by the specific equipment. Compare 35mm film to 480p digital and tell me which “reproduces more details that were present in the scene.” Objectively, film is better than digital in many ways; even more so than I mentioned. Practically, digital is extremely lower cost and quick, which means that is is objectively better in different categories. They’re different, and to say that one is better than the other is more of a statement about what your own personal priorities are rather than an absolute objective observation (or a projection of your learned priorities through authority figures that you listen to and value). Do some research on human biases and that should clear things up for you. Cheers 🥂😄

    Basecamp seems to be really nice tool, but it's also very expensive. I'd say it's rather targeted for commercial shooters. And this blue and gold moprhic filter just makes me laugh. You do not use anamorphic lenses to get the flares but to squeeze more of the surroundings into the footage with the same focal length. So maybe you can use it once or twice, but I would never buy them.

    Deakins hates filters.
    I've heard though the Smoque filter can imitate haze on the set. Have you tried?

      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have, it will never give you "beamage" so that's my only gripe. Check out my video on haze

    Hey Mark, thanks for your channel and this brilliant content. Question: How do you use those ND filters with mate box and everything in documentary situation where the light changes all the time and nothing is predictable?? Variable ND's, although not as good in terms of quality, at least offer this flexibility... But I was wondering if you were really using this more "cinema / fiction" set-up on doc shoots too..

      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ND filters in the polar pro matte Box are variable also. You can spin them to adjust the ratio

  • @aaronsambeyfilm
    @aaronsambeyfilm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What do you use for square ND filters? I shoot with a P6K and have been disappointed with a few brands.

    • @markbone
      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Currently I use the Polar pro VND for the most part in the basecamp but on the Alexa camera and such I'll use a LMB5 mattebox usually with Schneider 4 x 5 ND filters

    Definitely need to up my filter game.
    Just started playing with regular ND and polarizers. But I'd love some mist/bluemorphic/gold/warm filters.

    • @markbone
      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start with a polar pro mist or a 1/4 or 1/8 black satin

    Great info!! Is IRND better than Standard ND? Which one is better?

    • @markbone
      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think IR is only useful for certain sensors. it used to be a must for RED

    I totally concur! Filters are relevant and add a lot to the production esthetics. Where would you situate the optical low pass filter in cameras like the S1H in this discussion? Is it like a mist filter? Would you still add a mist filter in that case?

  • @makestuffmike

    Mark, will you often use a diffusion/mist filter along with vintage glass or is it usually on newer sharper glass where you would use the filter?

    • @markbone
      @markbone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it all depends the lens, I find i don't need it as much on a 44-2 but definitely want it on Sony or Canon glass because it's sooo sharp

    • @markbone
      @markbone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this video I’m using polar pro which is proprietary but the Industry standard is a 4x5 filter tray

    Another perfectly interesting tutorial, thanks, but I would like to ask a question on another topic if possible, what disk space does it take to shoot and edit a 30 minute documentary for example in 4K, in a ratio of say 5 to 1 for the shots?
