    Nice!
    Expansion essentially just makes the quieter sounds quieter, and the loud sounds louder, - I've got a dbx 118 which I use for de-compressing breakbeats, so I can add my on processing, and it can help remove some of the reverb and ambience from a drum loop.

    • @RickyTinez
      @RickyTinez  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      aaahhhhh That's awesome to know! literally the opposite of compression haha. I guess "expansion" never made me think that. but i can see, or hear rather, it now!

    Hmm, 2hp gap for a stereo end of chain box. Annoying, and gets me thinking. Given it's so small, can't help feeling the Intellijel Outs is taking up more room than it needs to. You could swop that out for a Befaco Output v3, and gain 2hp and cue, while not losing anything significant. Then, with 4hp there's more useful stereo modules. WMD have a couple of interesting stereo 4hp moduesl. Their SCSL is 4hp stereo a DBX style overeasy compressor, with a limiter mode. From past experience, these sound so good on dynamic house drum machine driven music with 909s, Jomox type sounds. WMD SCLPL ('Scalpel') is a morphing stereo 5-band EQ designed for mixing or end of chain use. Or ADDAC have a simpler one-knob tilt EQ. Or, Happy Nerding FX Aid might be nice to have as master effects with it's possibly better reverb or a distortion with a dedicated dry/wet control.

    Great video! I am using a little 40HP case for the exact same purpose, stocked with Per4mer and a Disting MK4 on DJ filter, plus four of our North Coast Modular Collective Flint Fader modules for hands-on control. I use slim right-angle cables to make Per4mer’s buttons easier to reach, and that helps a bunch. Luigi and Tendrils cables make my controls much easier to get to in my performance cases.

    I'd give a passive output a try to get rid of that little buzz. The goal with Eurorack is turn it way down once you're outside of the power rails, that's how Doepfer designed it to save us all money with TS instead of TRS patch cables. Active outputs need to be very well designed to avoid the noise issue.
    Give something like a DIY (or second hand) Rip a try and see if that does it, plus I think you will appreciate the transformers in those.

  • @gapster77

    I didn’t really know about compression, this was very interesting.
    I realise listening to you using this setup that compression must be used in a lot of house music, and used prolifically in French House Music, the latter seems to use it a lot for bringing things up and down, in and out of the mix, and French House has really full punchy beats, and are typically very funky with intricate basslines, both of which must be frequently compressed I guess?

      Is the 404 compression comparable to this versio?

    • @EverettVinzant
      @EverettVinzant ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The advantage this has over a 404 is:
      You can do all the effects simultaneously in real time, where with a 404 you get one effect or 4 with the MKII.
      I swapped the overseer with a TipTop audio MODFX FSU, and I’m using an Endorphin.es S+M as my MIDI controller. I put it all in a Power Lunch from Synthrotek. This gave me the ability to add an Intellijel Steppy and ZeroScope. I now have an “SP404” with 16 effects I can do all at once, a step sequencer, and a Scope to see the audio from each channel (left and right). Having enough SP-404’s to do this would cost me about $4800 (assuming I bought them used at $300 each), or $2400 if I bought 4 MKII’s at $600 each…

    • @SLRPS
      @SLRPS ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it probably makes more sense if you are already a bit into modular to do something like this, but the little box he has set up maybe is closer to having 2 OTO fx boxes in function/quality so the price isn't that far off.. plus the little midi utility just saves you a bit of headache in a live set up.

    2:10 In this before & after comparison, there's no gain matching - the "after" is much louder - so of course it sounds better after you gain it up.
    5:26 the way you explain this, it's a little misleading. To paraphrase, you say: "It seems as if it's louder, but [I used compression and make-up gain to make it louder]." Except, the way you linked your explanation of compression and make-up gain with the 1st assertion "It seems... but..." implies that it only SEEMS louder... but that's misleading - it really IS louder, as you explained that the quieter frequencies are boosted, while the loud frequencies are first squashed, but then boosted back up.
    Having said that, I still think it's a valuable demo to get an idea how much loudness you can get vs the amount of distortion, and to hear what's the vibe of that system. If it's for mostly live use, viewers probably don't care as much about a level matched before & after comparison. The only issue I have is the words that implied the "after" example wasn't really louder, and that's really a suggestion to think about for future videos rather than asking to amend this one.

    I know, laptops might kill the vibe for some but having one with you with a decent 2x2 channel interface might bring you the same result for a lower price. Given you already own the laptop with the software.
    An iPad might also do the trick.

      it’s definitely not as attractive of an option and that’s honestly at least half of what modular and synth culture is about: selling us attractive shortcuts. I get there’s the portability aspect, fair, but how many are actually performing enough to justify it? When it comes to these sorts of functions in particular, just use a daw.

      @@johnhowell-sayers8152 I totally get that. I, personally hate making Music on a computer.
      But I would consider it as a „end of chain“ device sitting somewhere under the desk just doing its compression thing.
      For this usecase not even a monitor is required. Just „set and forget“.

    Anybody know what I mean by 'black bar audio'?....mastering until the audio file looks like a black bar? Hahhahahhaha. Take your favorite professionally produced songs and compare their images/profiles within a wave editor. It's interesting.

      The outer one appears to be more of a jacket. They actually have a portmanteau name and call them shackets.
