Dhaka artiste and researcher Ayreen Khan, who participated in the quota reforms protest which eventually, led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, says she is filled with hope for a new Bangladesh, devoid of violence. In this conversation with ThePrint Contributing Editor Deep Halder, Ayreen Khan says breaking of statues is unfortunate.

Don't forget that bengali muslims were at the forefront of creating Pakistan. Muzeebur Rehman too played active role under the leadership of Soharwardi. That experiment failed within no time and Bangladesh was created over the dead bodies of large number of people. Celebrations did not last even five years. Muzeeb was killed and army took over. Bangladesh remained poor till Seikh Haseena came. Whatever one can say about her, econy improved and Bangladesh gained prominence in the world. Let us see what happens now... As of now i will keep my fingers crossed.

We are a young nation, provided with lot of challenges but have intelligence enough to say 'No' to a dictator and move on. Being a hindu in Bangladesh I never felt free even in Hasina regime. Bangladesh has the minority issues just as any other developing countries. It is sad and pathetic but we are still fighting for a secular nation. However, we don't want secularism under a dictator either 🙃🙂. Please check the corruptions, hunam rights violation, torture and oppression, money laundering, riots and other propagandas hasina regime imposed for so many years. What will be next is uncertain, but we want to try to reform the nation and establish true democracy.

Her interview reminds me of Ukrainian journalists after the Euromaidan protests. We were fighting for our rights, but many ethnic Russians were killed, burned alive, and subjected to unspeakable violence, including women. Our protest was justified, but some individuals who supported us were involved in these atrocities. She mentioned that Sheikh Hasina didn't trust the judiciary system, even though the protests began when the judiciary revoked the government's decision to end the quota system. The Awami League's student wing and the government supported the protests against the court order. If Sheikh Hasina had overridden the court's order, she would have been called a dictator who disregards court orders for personal gain. They could have appealed to the Supreme Court, but the protests might have been politicized by other groups.

She represents less than one percent of the Bangladeshi public. In Bangladesh, atheist bloggers are killed in broad daylight without any public protest. Hatred towards other faiths is prevalent. There is no significant difference between Bangladesh, Pakistan, or their Indian counterparts, except for the governing parties. If Bangladesh were to have a ruling party supported by Jamat, it would likely follow Pakistan's trajectory. No country can achieve democracy or progress when religious preference outweighs development.
