1st Oh and check MSI GP68 prices here: geni.us/gp68 it actually went down another $100 since making this video. The Control 4K results at 16:11 are here, I accidentally showed the Cyberpunk graph again: jarrods.tech/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/difference-control-4k.png Update November 2023: It looks like the BIOS from October 31st E15M1IMS.30A might fix the fan noise bug we reported with the comment "Fixed the fan noise when applying Balanced and Silent mode in the User Scenario setting". Unfortunately we do not have the GP68 anymore to confirm this.
Honestly if the main issue is the screen I could see this being good for someone who wants one device to do work on the go and also game at home while connected to a 1440p monitor.
@@kiyoponnn then you wont have to worry about a bricked laptop due to being overheated. When you're gaming and the laptop is not always on max then you're playing roblox or minecraft. Most games will use graphic card on the laptop and more likely than not the graphics card will use between 120 and 150 watts depending on the laptop. For comparison, your laptop watt brick is rated for 200-250 watt. This means the graphics card itself is pushing the laptop to the limit. If your graphics card is throttling the fan then kiss the laptop goodbye in 2-3 years of abuse. Its planned obsolence from the manufacturer.
The FullHD screen makes sense for someone like me who has a laptop solely as desktop replacement connected to an external monitor. It's a waste of money to get the better screen. Not everybody buys laptops to use them on the go and their monitors as the main one. I like when laptop manufacturers provide options for lower specced monitors.
Same here. I've cooling pad setup and external monitor. I need good video outputs to connect. No one plays on laptop for real gaming. Screen is a waste of money.
I bought this laptop model in Japan but mine has a 2560x1600 resolution. Ive been having a good time with it especially upgrading from a RTX 2060 laptop.
I just bought mine and paired it with a Alienware AW2724DM QHD monitor and couldn't be happier. The only downsides are really the screen, which in fact is very cheap and not even supports HDR, and the 16 Gb of RAM which is not ideal to take the most advantage of the I9 processor. So I've also upgraded the RAM memory to 32 Gb and now my notebook is a beast! The webcam is also bad and have a weird shadowing around the bottom corners, which in my case look worse than what it is showed on the video. Performance wise, I have nothing to complain about, this laptop delivers in every game I've played so far and have been also great for photoshop and multitasking. The keyboard and audio drivers provided by Steelseries are amazing and offers tons of customization options. The audio quality is also incredibly good. PS.: It is incredibly hard to open this laptop, on top of that there is a case covering the RAM slots, which are also hard to open because you need to carefully bend back some metal pieces around it.
@@Tha-King-Arthur I think this is a Windows problem. Even after upgrading to 32 GB RAM, the percentage of memory utilisation when idle hasn't changed significantly. You shouldn't rely too much on the Windows resource monitor as Windows always allocates a certain percentage of the available memory on your computer.
@leaolln After a Windows restart while idle, the task manager is showing that my RAM memory is at 40%. When I opened another program, the memory went to 60-70%, and after a while, the program crashed due to the high RAM usage. So it crashed because I opened only one program. I have already made a few changes in the MSI software and Windows 11, but my RAM memory always starts at 40%. There are also so many processes running in the background; it's crazy. I'm going to return the laptop.
The good thing about having a high-tier GPU on a low (1080p-ish) resolution screen is that it has high FPS on it's native resolution, even without these modern GPU software features. So this model isn't as bad as it looks, especially since 40 series cards below 4080 have a voltage limit.
I can confirm this as I have been gaming on my Aorus 17H with 4080 and 360Hz 1080p screen 🎉 It's awesome. Just turn up everything to the max and never even worry about it
@@aaz1992 I bet that 360hz is still a bottleneck on your GPU's max FPS. And yes, you could even set all settings to max/on & it would still run over a hundred FPS. Fu-... @$%&?!!
I got it two days ago. Balanced fan mode works fine in my unit although temps are higher in balanced mode (both GPU an CPU in 80s range) so some undervolting is needed for quieter fans. Build quality is phenomenal. No cost cuts there. Performance is ridiculous. My MSI GP75 RTX 2070 is pulling 60fps in Witcher 3 on uber setting in Novigrad. This one does 180fps. As Jarrod said the weakest point is display. Comparing to my GP75 colors are noticably muter. While greens and blues aren't as vibrant they're ok. The worst are reds which are either orange or brownish but for this laptop you want external display anyway.
Now the review comes out. I bought this a couple weeks back, somewhat out of frustration as the alternative options I considered never seemed to come back in stock. This appeared to be a good deal regards specs and right on the edge of my budget. So far I have to say I’m pretty happy with it, I’m no hardcore gamer so I don’t really notice the whole issue with the screen resolution, it does what I need it to. If need be I’ll buy a monitor for it in time. It effortlessly plays games on ultra settings. The only real issue I have with it are the fans, they’re like jet engines but the computer stays cool and when playing with the headset I don’t hear them so it’s something easily remedied. Only time will tell if my thoughts on this laptop will change but for now it seems like a good deal for someone like me. A casual gamer who occasionally works away from home and wants something decent to bring along for the evening downtime.
Its now available with the i9-13980HX for £1899 (MSI Vector GP68 HX 13V) and has an advertised 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut on a 144hz 1080p panel. I have recently purchased the TUF A15 Ryzen 9 7940HS and RTX 4070 for £1,200 (an offer at the time) - I immediately upgraded the ram to 32GB and added a 4TB WB Black for editing - it works very well (there's a review of it on this channel) but I feel I may have missed the true bargain with 4080 13950HX MSI. The M.2 drive and additional 32GB kit has made the TUF a £1,500 unit. It is still a very good deal but the intel CPU and RTX 4080 would be masterful for editing, especially the i9 with Quick Sync. I'm on the cusp of buying the MSI in the hopes I'll be able sell the TUFF for £1,400 as it's price is £1300 during black Friday and will likely go up again.
I'am looking at getting a 3D scanner and as a result I need to upgrade my old laptop. It seems that most of the Laptops come with 8GB of video ram and anything with more seems to be alot more expensive. Then I came across this laptop, well very similar with some updated specs. The one I have seen is the MSI Vector GP68HX 13VH, which has a 13th gen i9 1380HX, 32GB Ram, 12GB 4080 GPU, 2TB SSD and the 2560x1600 240Hz 16" display.
The screen being 1200p is unfortunate since this has a 4080, but i would assume that whoever is interested in this is not gonna bring it outside a lot, so it's gonna be docked and hooked up to an external monitor anyways, and the $400 difference compared to the Legion is gonna be spent on a very nice 1440p gaming monitor
Also to add that the user might not use the laptop for any color accurate work when using its screen like I do with my laptop (still rocking with my dell 15 7577 gaming laptop)
Its not unfortunate or even noticeable, you have 180ish ppi on WQHD 16" and 140ppi on the 1920x1200 16" Display, I bet you if scaled to the same UI size none could tell them apart. Its absolute bonkers to think you need anything over 140ppi on a laptop.
@@wumso-ih1xq Put 188.61 ppi and 141.51 ppi next to each other, you will instantly notice the difference unless you don't want to do so. It's 33% more pixels. Turn on a game and the clarity difference is immense, I've tested this myself.
@@wumso-ih1xq you can easily tell the difference. I don't mind running x1200 on my x1600 if I must, but 1600 is absolutely superior even at 16". I'd prefer an 18" so I'm sure the difference is even more apparent.
Firstly you had me nearly choking at 4:17 . I also found this laptop to be literally the most difficult to get inside of any i have ever reviewed. no joke. the specs are a very strange pairing, but as you found. A 4080 is a 4080. i just suggested a lot of people could even use this as a desktop replacement at the low price
I am likely going to use this to replace my desktop 10900k 5.1 ghz ddr4000 cl16 rx 6900 xt undervolt 254W. Performance almost identical but power draw is halved on the laptop and has dlss 3.5 support. Problem is I gotta sell this 550W under undervolted GPU load desktop
@@johnkeii Went on newegg to test the power requirement of the desktop you mentioned. It require 800-899 watt power supply. At idle desktop CPU alone is 51.1 watt at idle and 283 watt under normal load. If you undervolt the 10900k it will be at or below 1.4v and 125 watt (normal undervolt) to 225 watt (turbo undervolt) The AMD Rtx 6900 xt draws 300 watt under load (GPU undervolting is usually not recommended) This means under normal load its close to 600 watt with (cpu + gpu approx power draw only) and over 550 undervolted ( cpu + gpu approx power draw only) Undervolting difference would you at MOST be drawing 51.1--225 watt instead of up to 51.1-283 watt (not undervolting)
Great to know it’s okay to dock the laptop with the lid closed. Love the amount of detail your videos cover! One question though before I go ahead and do it, I’ve read people saying closing the lid could put the screen too close to heat and cause damage… would you say that’s something to worry about?
FINALLY, i was thinking of buying this and use it as a desktop replacement 90% of the time. It was $1699 on sale a week ago, $300 less than other 4080 laptops, guess the lower tier screen and 16GB ram played a factor there. THANK YOU for the review!! Edit: I want to point out that i have been using a 1060 laptop connected to a 1440p display for 7 years now. Replacing that laptop with this would be amazing! edit 2: just got it for 1600$ WITH tax! Newegg has it on sale for 1599 and i got an MSI student discount lol
Its still probably a better screen that what most people are used to. And at that size and refresh rate no one will notice if they are using a Monitor that's color calibrated, like the Asus creators monitors.
@@chrisbullock6477 i know, my old laptop has a 1080p 60hz screen, and the colors are just bad when compared to the monitor. But when i use the laptop normally for any day to day tasks, that does not matter at all. I'll gladly take the lower res screen lol , if i keep this laptop for another 8 years, ill be able to play the latest AAA games from 2030 at native 1080p with no issues XD I just hope the sale comes back on during BF, or better sales come from other laptops. The 12900H concerns me a little bit as it has 2 fewer P cores, which might factor in later on as games get more optimised for 8 core workloads. But i doubt it'll be a huuuge difference anyway.
I bought a gp68 several months ago. In China,you can get a 13700hx +4080 version with a 2560×1600 240hz screen at about 1800 dollars.The screen can reach 500nit and has 100%srgb.really a good mechine
looking back at this review, this is honestly the best option for me. - high performance - lots of displayport-friendly usb type -c ports (in the back where they belong) - excellent price. I really dont care about the screen being 1080p... i ACTUALLY PREFER it this way. Most of the gaming anyone who has money to buy one of these expensive laptops will be doing is docked anyways. THe few occasions we will undock this for on-the-go, its for regular browsing and youtube watching. None-of which requires higher than 1080p. I never really understood the purpose of high-res laptop displays, its just stupid imo. I much rather have 1080p high refresh and KNOW my powerfull laptop will ALWAYS give me max performance on ANY GAME no MATTER WHAT, nO MATTER the settings. If I want to push it further, i'll just dock it. which this seems to be perfect for. the most important things for me when purchasing a laptop you covered - screen hinge ( is it good? is it sturdy? does it wobble when typing?) - build quality (is it well built? will it stand the test of time, being in a backpack carried around? or will it crack and break?) - cooling ( anyone who buys this will most likely dock it, and for the price, this should be your main machine, does it maintain temps? or does it throttle? ) - touchpad ( is it CENTERED??? or is it awkwardly and uncomfortably p-laced on the left-hand side like lenovo's horrible mess?) - keyboard ( is it comfortable? do the keys offer enough resistance that you wont accidentally duoble type a letter?) - built-in software (is msi's software stable? does it ACTUALLY WORK? or is it a horrible unusable mess like gigabye's control center?) Something I would like to see you do more is, show people how a laptop would function while docked, to an ultrawide. Show docked performance while gaming, and connected to an external display. And please include ultrawide testing, no one really cares about old-school granny 16:9 , we want 21:9 please. 3440x1440 is where it's at. Thanks!
I went with the 16" Legion pro 5i RTX 4070 laptop for $1009, it was open box excellent at Best Buy and appeared brand new, plastic still on the screen, etc., the difference is $700-$1000 to the 4080 laptops. Runs everything I throw at it on my Ultrawide QHD 34" monitor. For the difference in price, I can just buy a new laptop with the savings in a couple of years if futureproofing was a concern.
Remember with the 4070 you only have 8gb Vram. And that is already becoming a problem. Plus the 4080 is like 40% faster in most games and 12gb vram will be sufficient for those PS6 NextXbox generation of games
Very nice. I just got this a couple weeks ago. I use an external monitor when I need. The fan IS bugged though. Do you have any info on how to go about fixing this?
Did MSI fix the issue where the fans always run when the GPU is active? I found this laptop with the better processor and monitor for 1,700 and I'm about to buy it as long as fans aren't going crazy. Thanks a lot
You will want to put this laptop up on an elevated platform that is permeable and able to draw air through.. as this will allow the fans to move more air through the laptop, and Temps should not get any hotter than 75 degrees Celsius.. if you dont use an elevated platform, you can see the temps ho as high as 85 degrees celsius with thermal throttling.
What a strange feeling watching this from my Vector with 1600p screen picked up 3 weeks ago. 😁 Got tempted by the thought of playing Starfield @ 60fps (loudly)along with Cyberpunk , so this became my very 1st gaming pc after owning a Series X and PS5. The value is great and I´m very satisfied with it. Only negative might be the weight , this thing is HHEEAAVVYY!! 😂
Coming from a GT60 from 2013 with a GTX780M. Now passes 10 years a anniversary. I have eyes on this one that is the successor. Thank you for that test because it's well hidden in MSI store France you have hard Time finding it ! Maybe it was too interesting for the consumer ? I didn't know there was this one ! But "deals" in France is at least 2500€ so still expensive but the GT 77 is the true sucessor with ease of access and upgrading. but it's at least 1000€ more of this one for same spec. Although better screen with calibrated dolby 1000 nits and excellent color coverage. Cherry mx low profile keyboard and overall better performance
Bought the refreshed model MSI vector 17 with i9 13980hx and 4080 performance is top notch and to my surprise the monitor has been also been upgraded to 1080p 100% srgb the only "downside" are the aggressive fans but at the same time the temperatures are amazing especially after undervolting the CPU -120 -100 -100 whilst at the same overclocked the GPU +255 core for a total of 2700-2715mhz and +1000 memory for a total of 10000 memory clock 🎉
Make sure to put it on the open bottom stand while gaming. The air intakes on the bottom are completely blocked when it stands on the table and it sounds like a leafblower.
My laptop is the MSI Raider GE76 12UE-with a i9-12900h+16gb DDR5 4800hz Ram+RTX3060....it was on sale at Costco and for 1080p gaming its great...I do regret not getting a laptop with better gpu
EDIT:Fan noise control issue is fixed in their October BIOS. I have QHD model of this laptop. Regarding the fan speed not following the balanced/silent preset in MSI Center bug, this issue only happens in later bios firmware; No problem with my stock or slightly older bios. I brought this issue to their customer service and they said they made it this way to prevent the laptop from being overheated ... That made me wish I could still refund the laptop but can't.
Yeah. I think the spec, the screen and the keyboard are great. Only noise and the temperature are the issue. The noise becomes an issue for me because I live with roommate. The noise is tolerable with headphones. Temperature in the middle is a little much in balanced mode
@@abdullahp7986normal cooling pad didn't help much. There is no manual fan control in the MSI center, except the extreme mode control but the new firmware completely ignore the preset and mode. In old firm, extreme mode max at 5 to 6k rpm, balanced at 3k and silent ... I forgot? But yeah.

hey @Jarrod'sTech even have a question, I'm really unsure which laptop I should get. the MSI vector GP68HX or the MSI Raider GE68HX, which one do you recommend?

I recently purchased the GP68 Vector with 4080 12GB ram and 13950hx which is selling in the US for $2100.00. It has the same average screen. I upgraded ram to 32 GB and a 990 pro ssd. I run an external monitor and laptop cooler. I did an under volt and get sustained 32500 cinebench r23. Quite a screamer. I was, however, not able to get any xmp ram over 5600 MT. I was able to increase sodium voltage to about 2.75-2.95 to get CL 34. Btw, my bios is version “7” and I don’t seem to have the fan issue. There is the newer bios “9” which does seem to have extra noisy fan. I heard the workaround is to use manual fan curves. For this MSI skew mentioned in Jarod’s video the 175 w graphics is great and the price point 1700 (US) allows a future ram and monitor upgrade to get excellent performance at a reasonable cost.
Hey! So you are running 5600 MHz CL34? I’m planning to upgrade the 16GB to 64GB and was wondering which kit to choose. However I have the 12900HX that Jarrod tested. Do you think it would be able to run 5600 CL40 memory? Thanks :)
@@lazartfilmproductions7387 apologies I just saw this. Kingston fury ram. Somewhat pricy but well made and long lasting. I seem to recall an intel spec on the motherboard that limits the 32GB sticks (you’d have two of these so 64GB) to 5200 MT. You’d probably have to manually OC the ram (increase your voltage offsets). I’d bet you could get CL36 at 5200 MT which would be a nice balance between total ram size and reduced latency. I initially went with 64GB and “downgraded” to 32 GB to get more speed out of the ram. I do occasionally game and I don’t do as much video editing as I once did. If I was more of a full time editor I would probably switch back to 64GB. I hope this helps.
@@adamsmv2512 yes, IETs. About 85 bucks. Has a drum type fan and nice pads to seal up your laptop. This cooler works best with bottom air intake laptops. Voltage offsets are Performance cores: -145, Efficiency cores: -117, Ring: -91. Cinebench R23 multi core stock is 28477, with under volt, cooler and ram OC (32GB CL 34, 5600 MT) is 32500-33704. About 13-15% overall boost.
Even has Thunderbolt 4 and a built in audio DAC...very nice. Considering what you get like forward thinking 2.5Gb Ethernet port and thunderbolt 4 for nice creator type monitors and the extra video memory with the 4080 I can live with the older cpu and 4800mhz max speed memory which is probably cheaper anyway if you want to max it out with 64gigs which probably would net you 13th gen performance with 16gigs. I'll be looking at this an the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
3:22 I do find that the extended case going over the back ports, offers better damage control for the wires being hit and bent and it's better for the ports themselves just my experience. b

Love your content! Will you be reviewing the hp omen 17 for this year? I decided to buy an rtx 4080 laptop and the omen seemed much more affordable than other options
Highly discourage the Omen brand, customer support is awful and repairability is awful too. I only bought the 15 for the sleek looks and that was the worst decision
Nice catch Jarrod. Although I found an Omen 17 with a 4080 on eBay sold by a retailer “Antonline“ going for $1729 as well. I naturally prefer 17”3 screens so the Omen’s my preferred choice. Helping me out here would be really, really appreciated, Ive had no help so far & I think that’s a great price for a 4080.
just curious why you prefer 17? I can't ever go back to 16:9 aspect ratio. 16:10 is just so much better imo. I bought my antonline legion 5 pro and it went fine. I did try to take advantage of their return policy. After I threatened a charge back, they complied. Basically, they give you a bit of crap, but if you push back they will (must) honor it. Reddit doesn't really like antonline tho, and says its a scummy seller.

Antonline typically have the best prices, however, they have a reputation for sending out used or faulty devices and refusing to refund them. Opening that shell just give me PTSD of opening my L5P 3070Ti before they change it, I bet MSI did that now just to stop people from opening up, it just doesnt make any sense that they didnt before.
In all honesty there are probably plenty of people that use a high end range gpu laptop as a desktop replacement with an external monitor, keyboard, mouse etc... so there is actually plenty where to cheap out on to provide a value product. You don´t necessarily need a high refresh rate hdr screen when you at best browse the web or do some research/office work on the go. I would even go as far to say that a lot of high end laptops are overengineered/overloaded/overequipped for how they are mostly used. Not saying this IS necessarily bad but when you have a brand offering you a lower price point by cutting some corners you don´t care about anyways then i´d say they are very welcome. And in regards to cpu/gpu combo, the rtx 4080 laptop version is a bit faster then the rtx 4060 desktop version? So it makes quite sense to use some older cpu options (if available) to cut costs, you are gpu bottlenecked anyways.
I bought the MSI Vector 17 inch, i9-14900HX, 32GB DDR5 5600 Mhz, RTX 4070 8GB, 2560x1600, 240Hz. And this really is a great laptop. The 4080/4090 GPUs are really not necessary and are just a waste of money. Unless you want an even hotter laptop and 10 FPS more.
I have heard it has some problems with heat. Is it really the case? and people are changing the thermal paste it comes with because the one it is shipped with is poor. I am choosing between it and the Lenovo V7I PRO 4080. it is a bit more expensive so is it worth the difference? I dont care about monitor quality and the RAM I can upgrade later
@@amgadtawfik7534 you did great, I think Lenovo is the most reliable brand for laptops in this range. I end up calling the warranty and they will pick up the Pc tomorrow, I hope they'll fix it. If don't I'll buy a thermal paste and do it myself😂. Sad enough I passed the time to ask for refund.
I'm in the same situation, after 9 months the laptop shuts down due to high temperature, it's still under warranty, I sent it to the brand, I'm waiting. If there is no response after 30 days, the store will give me a new laptop.
I'm confused between Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 ( 13500hx+4060+qhd 16inch) ans tuf a15 (7940hs+4060+15.6"qhd) Can you please tell me which one should i go for?
Might consider trading in my old MSI for a new one if I can. Old one still works like a charm, but it'd be cool to try new computers or even brands now and again.
i think the QHD+ variant only exists on paper, just as the 4090 option. They probably just had it on specs ("up to QHD and 4090") to confuse and trick buyers. On the other hand, the QHD+ option seems to be standard for the 17.3" GP78HX.

The Control 4K results at 16:11 are here, I accidentally showed the Cyberpunk graph again: jarrods.tech/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/difference-control-4k.png
Update November 2023: It looks like the BIOS from October 31st E15M1IMS.30A might fix the fan noise bug we reported with the comment "Fixed the fan noise when applying Balanced and Silent mode in the User Scenario setting". Unfortunately we do not have the GP68 anymore to confirm this.

Honestly if the main issue is the screen I could see this being good for someone who wants one device to do work on the go and also game at home while connected to a 1440p monitor.
yup
Just bought this and that's exactly what I intend to do
another issue is the fans always being on max during gaming regardless of cpu and gpu temperatures
I mean in that case, why not spend a little more to get a Legion or Scar?
The 17 inch version?
@@marianadm4320 No I have the 16 inch.
@@marianadm4320 probably 18. Most "even number" inches are 16:10 aspect ratio (such as 2560x1600), and "odd number" inch monitors are 16:9.
@@marianadm4320nah, the asian version all have 1600p screen, the Chinese version in specific even got upgrated to 13700
Exactly what I'm about to do
Jarrod I can't believe the timing. I was going to buy this exact same laptop and have been searching proper TH-cam review for last 2 days.
Did you also suffer from the fact that the RAM memory already took up 40% while the laptop was idle?
Just turn up everything to the max and never even worry about it
@@aaz1992
I bet that 360hz is still a bottleneck on your GPU's max FPS.
And yes, you could even set all settings to max/on & it would still run over a hundred FPS. Fu-... @$%&?!!
@@Unknown0YT0 in games like Counter Strike 2, yes. In almost all other cases, it's hard to reach 360fps with max settings lol
1080p screen on a 4080 GPU is absolute donkey tier e-waste.
@SuperFlawless2010 ya but I also enjoy my 4K 120Hz TV and 1440p 240Hz external monitor
The worst are reds which are either orange or brownish but for this laptop you want external display anyway.
try a game that came out recently
I bought the same laptop, did you undervolt through BIOS or something else, and did it help a lot?
Any update? Have you experienced any problems?
Have firmware updates fixed the fan issue?
you still like it?
I got my ROG Strix G18 with a 4080 and 13980HX for $2200 about a month ago. Zero issues. Runs like a champ.
Nice!
$2200 you from USA?? Here in Europe, that laptop cost $3000
@@ASS_ault Yeah, we have like $600 VAT=value added to goods and services
I would certainly hope so for that price.
How much ram and storage?
I'm on the cusp of buying the MSI in the hopes I'll be able sell the TUFF for £1,400 as it's price is £1300 during black Friday and will likely go up again.
even then the msi not worth it
In Germany this thing costs 2299 Euro. We're being so ripped off. 😅
Something, something that included taxes 😂
The first 4080-class laptop to make me reconsider getting over the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i and new Legion Pro 5 AMD/4070 version laptops.
But the Legion 7 has 16 GB more RAM (32)… I think if the MSI has the same RAM it would be nearly the same and you have a better screen ?
@@johnkeii
Went on newegg to test the power requirement of the desktop you mentioned. It require 800-899 watt power supply.
At idle desktop CPU alone is 51.1 watt at idle and 283 watt under normal load.
If you undervolt the 10900k it will be at or below 1.4v and 125 watt (normal undervolt) to 225 watt (turbo undervolt)
The AMD Rtx 6900 xt draws 300 watt under load (GPU undervolting is usually not recommended)
This means under normal load its close to 600 watt with (cpu + gpu approx power draw only) and over 550 undervolted ( cpu + gpu approx power draw only)
Undervolting difference would you at MOST be drawing 51.1--225 watt instead of up to 51.1-283 watt (not undervolting)
The thermals on this are awesome! Pretty good laptop if you're using a good external monitor.
Great to know it’s okay to dock the laptop with the lid closed. Love the amount of detail your videos cover! One question though before I go ahead and do it, I’ve read people saying closing the lid could put the screen too close to heat and cause damage… would you say that’s something to worry about?
Not that I know of. I haven't heard of anyone experiencing issues like that.
I'll gladly take the lower res screen lol , if i keep this laptop for another 8 years, ill be able to play the latest AAA games from 2030 at native 1080p with no issues XD
I just hope the sale comes back on during BF, or better sales come from other laptops. The 12900H concerns me a little bit as it has 2 fewer P cores, which might factor in later on as games get more optimised for 8 core workloads. But i doubt it'll be a huuuge difference anyway.

looking back at this review,
this is honestly the best option for me.
- high performance
- lots of displayport-friendly usb type -c ports (in the back where they belong)
- excellent price.
If I want to push it further, i'll just dock it. which this seems to be perfect for.
the most important things for me when purchasing a laptop you covered
- screen hinge ( is it good? is it sturdy? does it wobble when typing?)
- build quality (is it well built? will it stand the test of time, being in a backpack carried around? or will it crack and break?)
- cooling ( anyone who buys this will most likely dock it, and for the price, this should be your main machine, does it maintain temps? or does it throttle? )
- touchpad ( is it CENTERED??? or is it awkwardly and uncomfortably p-laced on the left-hand side like lenovo's horrible mess?)
- keyboard ( is it comfortable? do the keys offer enough resistance that you wont accidentally duoble type a letter?)
- built-in software (is msi's software stable? does it ACTUALLY WORK? or is it a horrible unusable mess like gigabye's control center?)
Something I would like to see you do more is, show people how a laptop would function while docked, to an ultrawide.
I just paid $1599 for the 4080 and open box was $1440. Never settle for less than you're satisfied with. Good choice saving money with open box

I have this exact laptop. I can confirm that the fan issue has been fixed on the latest BIOS update. The fan speeds are how it should be.

Thanks :)
There seem to be a 9a ans 9c bios version that supposedly fixes the fan noise.I wish someone could confirm.
What cooler you using and does it help? Do you happen to know how much volt offset you used as well. Thanks in advance!
Kalau mau d jual second an nya kabar2in ya bang 🙏🏻
Where did you buy ? I can't find in "toko ijo" and "toko jingga"
Layarnya gimana bro?1440p? Bagus kah?
Rencana gw mau beli juga sih bro
The puget systems benchmark for Davinci Resolve isn't the whole story. The real test is a Blackmagic raw speed test, you should include that
I tried buying the lenovo on B&H but they cancel my order and wanted me to wire them money instead. Seemed kinda shady.
the down side is just screen. its really worth money considering legion and all normal 4080 is almost double it price. i mean why not.
None of these laptops are listed at $1700 on your own links. They list for $2100 currently.
I think this review was uploaded a little late, can confirm this GP68HX was listed at 1699 at newegg a couple of weeks ago when i bought it!
Nice catch Jarrod. Although I found an Omen 17 with a 4080 on eBay sold by a retailer “Antonline“ going for $1729 as well. I naturally prefer 17”3 screens so the Omen’s my preferred choice. I actually replied to your last post on your website (the counter strike) asking about the legibility of that seller, but you probably hadn’t seen it yet :)
Anyone else, who has any experience with Antonline? Helping me out here would be really, really appreciated, Ive had no help so far & I think that’s a great price for a 4080.
just curious why you prefer 17? I can't ever go back to 16:9 aspect ratio. 16:10 is just so much better imo. I bought my antonline legion 5 pro and it went fine. I did try to take advantage of their return policy. After I threatened a charge back, they complied. Basically, they give you a bit of crap, but if you push back they will (must) honor it. Reddit doesn't really like antonline tho, and says its a scummy seller.
@@boblablaw4857 Thank you! Feels great to *finally* get a response from someone who finally got from them, because I saw a lot of mixed reviews on reddit. Hoping for something nice on black friday.
Why I prefer 17”? No reason, I like big screens & I don’t have the workspace at the moment/budget to get an external screen, as I move a lot with my laptop anyway( I do many more career/data functions other than gaming. Game much less these days even)
Does antonline only take orders online(no pun intended)? Or you can head down to their store to buy as well? Thanks a lot, again
Antonline typically have the best prices, however, they have a reputation for sending out used or faulty devices and refusing to refund them. We don't list any of their deals on our site, even if they have the best prices. I would definitely check the negative feedback on Ebay before making the decision.
@@JarrodsTechJust saw this, bless man! Think I’m gonna have to make a a hard one here
Can you do a monthly video regarding "the best cheapest good gaming laptop" series every month with three price ranges low-650USD, 1150 USD, 1800USD. Thanks.
You can find GP68 with 2560x1600p 240Hz screen in msi store in fact.
I have this laptop with the 2560x1600p 240Hz screen and for me it looks a little bit dark but I connect it to a 1080p monitor for CS2 and other competitive games and for me is awesome.
Where did you find a model with these specs?

I enjoy your reviews, I think they’re well structured and covers pretty much everything
Just one request if you can write the weight in Kilograms next to the weight in pounds that would be perfect 🙏🏻
Divide by 2.2 bud.
The scale is in kilograms and you can read it directly
WONDERFUL, I mainly connect to my 1440p monitor, and when travel, just compromise for few days.
The review I’ve been waiting for
Do you know why these gaming laptops with high refresh rate needed to turn off then on to switch from 120 to 60hz and vice versa? While phone can have dynamic refresh rate without needing to turn display off and on.
I picked this thingy up for 1399 on super sale
I remember opening my friend good ol' ROG with GTX 950, that's just how it is too over there, prying keyboard deck at top.
Some plastic cards (ATM, point card, etc) can do the job too, but yeah Guitar pick seems the easy choice here.
Ended up getting an asus g18, can’t wait to try it out compared to the 3060 and
I5-10400f inside my desktop.
I bought this laptop a couple of weeks back, i was really impressed with the performance.
Do you have problems with temperatures while playing and your PC turn off?
oohhhh my laptop is on jarodd finaly he can tell what good of a purchase i made or not .... havent finish watching it
yay its a good purchase ... i think
11:56 doesn't make anysense a resolution higher than FHD at a 16 inches screen, for comparison, take a UHD 42 inches screen, it has less PPI than the 16 inches FHD screen
Opening that shell just give me PTSD of opening my L5P 3070Ti before they change it, I bet MSI did that now just to stop people from opening up, it just doesnt make any sense that they didnt before.
my laptop after 11 years just died , it’s so weird and confusing to research for a new one after all these years, and everything is so expensive 🤦♂️
costs the same price the tuf dash f15 did in 2021 this is a steal
well done, a really good review. i can see this model flying off the shelves for its awesome 4080 value
What an amazingly deep and useful review! Nice!
Glad you liked it!
Hese laptops are meant to be connected to tvs an monitors, the screen is for the moments you aren't near one.
Damn, that's half of what I just paid for my Clevo, with a 4090.
2500 euros. Anywhere to find laptops sold in Europe for great prices?
I have heard it has some problems with heat. Is it really the case? and people are changing the thermal paste it comes with because the one it is shipped with is poor. I am choosing between it and the Lenovo V7I PRO 4080. it is a bit more expensive so is it worth the difference? I dont care about monitor quality and the RAM I can upgrade later
Mine heat alot, some games even turn off the Pc due to thermal throttling, I'm calling the the store I buyed for a repair
@@quagmiire Thank you I went for the Lenovo V7 instead
@@amgadtawfik7534 you did great, I think Lenovo is the most reliable brand for laptops in this range.
I end up calling the warranty and they will pick up the Pc tomorrow, I hope they'll fix it.
If don't I'll buy a thermal paste and do it myself😂.
Sad enough I passed the time to ask for refund.
@@quagmiire sorry for that. Hope they did fix it by now.
I'm in the same situation, after 9 months the laptop shuts down due to high temperature, it's still under warranty, I sent it to the brand, I'm waiting. If there is no response after 30 days, the store will give me a new laptop.
Will I not have Gsync even when using external monitor that supports it?
In the video, Jarrod says that G-Sync is supported over HDMI on his LG B9 TV.
Gsync also supported using the mini display port... as it works with my aw3423dwf perfectly.
I'm confused between Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 ( 13500hx+4060+qhd 16inch) ans tuf a15 (7940hs+4060+15.6"qhd)
Can you please tell me which one should i go for?
Could you please make a comparison video (Idle, CPU, GPU, Normal TH-cam, Office use): The gaming laptops with best thermals?
Your video contributed to me purchasing one. Thanks
Thankyou jarrod you dont know how happy iam
Might consider trading in my old MSI for a new one if I can.
Old one still works like a charm, but it'd be cool to try new computers or even brands now and again.
Did you lift the laptop back on the thermal tests without the cooling pad?
Hey Jarrod, is Dell/Alienware sending you the Alienware m18 AMD Advantage laptop announced yesterday?
🤷♀️Hopefully, but I don't know yet.
i think the QHD+ variant only exists on paper, just as the 4090 option. They probably just had it on specs ("up to QHD and 4090") to confuse and trick buyers.
On the other hand, the QHD+ option seems to be standard for the 17.3" GP78HX.
nah it does exist on the asia market i got one actually
Ye, in fact, the qhd version is the only one available here in indonesia
