    Getting ready to rig up kayaks with Grandson and myself. Can see the sense and logic of this rig. Glad I found it among all the straight line rigs.

    I am glad to see the right way to place your anchor line that is much safer. When I put my zip tie link I don’t take me up all the way. This Little bit of slack is very helpful. In saltwater fishing you either move fast or go swimming.

    Great safety advice! Very good point regarding the zip tie. Most people don't realize how strong the heavy duty ones are and that you would never be able to break it. This is a similar set-up to the "Columbia River" anchor systems used on fishing boats such as my 20' aluminum. You have to know what your doing. People die on that river (Columbia) every year; sometimes because they don't know how to release a stuck anchor properly. Same rules apply to kayaks. Thanks.

    I wish I had seen this before. I was in a pretty fast moving river and my anchor line came loose from the front where I had it attached. I was tied in the middle, so it turned me and I went swimming. Thankfully I had just bought a high quality PFD. I spent 15 minutes trying to bust my zip tie, but couldn't get the right angle and had to cut the line. Definitely going to use your system, and stay out of the river with an anchor.

      When things go sideways in current they go sideways fast. Glad to hear it all worked out. Be safe this season and good luck on the water!

  • @UcranianoUKR

    That's a good tip. You can probably simplify it by just leaving some slack in the line and just making a loop to which you zip tie the anchor. This way you don't need the extra length of rope, you can still use a swivel if you want, but you won't be able attach the chain

  • @dennisowens9501
    @dennisowens9501 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No zip tie needed just take a piece of rope and tie to each eye in your anchor with some slack in the rope . Use a swivel clip on your anchor line and clip to the rope tied to your anchor. Now if you get your anchor hung just back up pull your anchor backwards and the anchor pulls out backwards. This works for the grappling hook anchor shown in the video. No popping wire ties and never lost an anchor. I just tie a double half hitch on each eyelet. Works Great!!! Also safer in a kayak!!!

    Hey Denny: All kayak anglers should heed your advice on this. How to un-stick an anchor is a skill that needs to be practised and mastered. What I evolved to instead of zip ties is literally two ropes with the bottom one deliberately one foot longer. Works amazingly well. But I have never seen anyone else do it or recommend it. Go figure.

    • @FloatFishAdventure
      @FloatFishAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting - How do you get the anchor to pull the crown from the long rope when you're hung up?

  • @timadams3975
    @timadams3975 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for the info.. I'm gonna add a swivel to mine now. I like using the half inch velcro straps instead of a zip tie. One fast short hard jerk will break them loose and you can use them again.

    • @HeyStripes
      @HeyStripes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      this seems like a great tip. How well does the velcro handle being wet over an extended period of time? How often do you need to replace the velcro strips?

    • @timadams3975
      @timadams3975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HeyStripes I've used the same one for a year. I always check to make sure it's tight before I drop the anchor. They should last for a long time. The ones I use came with a electrical terminal wiring kit. They are easier to get to come undone than the small zip ties. Some of the small zip ties would be almost impossible to break if you was on a kayak.

    The best anchor video out there. I'm new to kayaking, and I'm going to setup my anchor like yours. Makes sense. Do you think you could make a video on the right and safest way to rig the anchor to the kayak? I've seen a lot of guys rig theirs directly to the ring on the anchor trolly and have no method to quickly jettison the anchor in case of a problem.

      Anyplace that sells horse supplies will have panic snaps. They can be easily released under tension. I place the panic snap in line about a foot from the trolly. The anchor line has a foam float so I can recover it.

    Lost an anchor the other day in a panic. So I'm searching for tips. There are a couple of great tips here that are not mentioned in many other sources. I see the value in having slack between the bottom and top of the anchor. And about the strength of ~30 lbs- I used 50lb mono line and that was way too much. I was due for a better anchor but I won't loose the next one to a rookie mistake.

    I really wish i would have seen your video before my first kayak fishing trip last week! I hadn't been on a kayak in years, and never one with an anchor! Long story short,it came down to my (thankfully) very level-headed boyfriend insisting to just cut the line before we had a real crisis. You really don't realize how much you're tipping when you are pulling on the line! Neither of us could pop it without sending one of us into the water. Thanks for the tip! I think I'll be adding a float to the line too,just in case i need to detach fast. I somehow ended up scary close to some trees! Yikes

    Anchor trolleys are great for lakes, not so much in rivers with decent current. In the time you have to pull the anchor you must move the trolley to within reach (the side of the yak). If the anchor is hung up at all you are now pulling against a set anchor from the side of your kayak. Just food for thought. I anchor off the bow or stern only in rivers.

    • @FloatFishAdventure
      @FloatFishAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rarely ever even bring an anchor river fishing and I always advise newcomers against it. I do use my trollies a lot in rivers for clipping off to brush piles and stickups though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    to much extra hardware. I run line up and make a half loop and ziptie the line to that loop (thru achor eyelet) so you have 3 peice of line zipties together. when you yank it slays the 3 apart which pops the tie. and yes light duty ties

    I wonder how well it would work to tie a slide rope to both points of the anchor and attached to that with a ring to your anchor rope. That way if you paddle back ahead of your anchor and pulled on it the slide ring would slide the other direction and pull it free.

    • @FloatFishAdventure
      @FloatFishAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen a couple of people mention that. It's worth experimenting with I think.

  • @MrOzzy281
    @MrOzzy281 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best technique I've seen and use is a line from one end of the anchor to the other. Attach this line a D clip which also attaches to your anchor line. The D clip can slide freely from one end of the anchor to the other. If you get stuck you paddle up tide/wind so that you pull from the other end of the anchor.

    What about adding a shackle by the flukes and attaching a chain from there to the swivel then the ziptie and your standard rope with a float? That way if you have to drop the anchor you can use a magnet to come back and help retrieve it. Great design i will be using this design for my setup, maybe with my mods, Thanks for the vid.

    You say all this like you came up with the zip tie idea. Im not sure who first thought of it but it definitely is basic common knowledge unless you dont like your anchor. In fact when I bought my anchor for my kayak it came with a swivel, D-ring for the base, zip ties and a pre tied 18" paracord line.

    The knot you tied on the bottom of the anchor (opposite the swivel) doesn’t look like it would hold very well and you will loose the anchor? If not where do you tie the actual rope for your anchor at or does it slide back and forth between the top and bottom?

    • @FloatFishAdventure

    What size anchor do you usually run on fast moving water?

    • @FloatFishAdventure
      @FloatFishAdventure  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. Tethering your kayak to the river bottom in swift current is unreasonably dangerous in my opinion. I never anchor in those conditions. Instead I use a brush clip, bank-anchor or stake-out pole. The when, where and how about anchoring is a larger topic and probably deserves a follow up video of it's own. I wanted to keep this one focused just on rigging the anchor. The anchor I use when I do use one is a 3 lb grapple.

  • @Gkitchens1

    A small string or piece of copper wire will give much easier than a zip tie.... Or a few bread ties even. No risking tipping your boat to get the anchor back.

    • @FloatFishAdventure
      @FloatFishAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Copper wire doesn't sound like a bad idea at all! I've found that the zip ties are no issue as long as you're using light duty ones and they're not zipped down tight. I agree though, that most people don't realize just how strong they are. A standard medium duty zip tie cinched up tight is almost impossible to break.

      polypropylene floats and doesn't wear very well. I'm sure it would work but there would be better polyester or nylon options that would be easier to manage and last longer.

    Great info... Would you prefer a 1.5 lb or 3 lb anchor for a 12 ft sit-on-top?

    Ok, first of all let me say that your hair is freaking tight in this vid Bro. Damn son. Seriously, what is the product? I like what I use but I'm always looking for other good stuff. Don't think I didn't notice that you had a haircut in this vid because I'm an observant man. Now the anchor. I like your concept. I fish in some different types of water but concept is same. I will say this, I have downsized my cable tie to a smaller one than you use. They are amazingly strong when trying to break.

      You're not the first alpha male to be reduced to envy by this mane of mine! You're right about those ties being strong. And the reality is that the tensile strength can very from what they say on the package. Always good to do a little testing to be sure you get what's going to work for you.

    Hey brother, only question i have for you is how often do you use the chain add on? I see a good handful of people who don't use a chain at all and then I see an equal amount that use the chain all the way down the shaft of the anchor at all times.

      The chain is cumbersome, it's added weight to carry around, and it can be noisy, so I always have it with my gear in the truck but I don't bring it out on the water unless I think I'm going to need it. Generally speaking, the shallower the lake, the less the need for the chain, but that need increases as the windspeed does. The purpose of the chain is to keep the anchor lying flat so it stays dug into the bottom. Deeper water, or roller waves, causes the anchor to tend to want to lift up and pop free, so the added weight of the chain offsets that. Most of my lake fishing is in water 20' or less. I use the chain maybe 25-33% of the time that I'm anchoring. That's why I like being able to take it off when I don't need it. I sort of rambled on a bit here didn't I...

    What’s better to use in saltwater brass or stainless steel swivel and clips?

      Saltwater is outside my area of expertise. My guess is that either would be fine as long as you rinse them off with fresh water after your outings.

    dont tie the zip tie tight all the way.. i like to leave a little bit of slack so there is bit of play on the ring. it will pop the zip tie easier.
